Storm’s Coming! Riding it Out at Anchor | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 47

- Storms are scary on a boat. Your entire home rocks around like a whirly-gig, and you’re never quite sure if it’s going to stay put, or go careening off and crash into rocks, land, or another boat! Up until now, we’ve been securely tied to a dock whenever a storm has hit. This is our first time at anchor. 😳
Hope you enjoy!

I absolutely love the music in this episode.
Only halfway in and you guys did the right thing !!! At anchor in big winds and you can't leave, more scope is always the answer. Of course, keeping other boats in proximity. BRAVO !!
11:30 look at that bird!! I just love nature!
I hope you guys stick with it, because you guys are fun to watch! Soo much of what you experience right now is brand new and both your reactions to things make me smile!
Another great episode! When the storm was brewing I kept thinking the dinghy should be aboard or at least the outboard but then I saw the panels on the foredeck and understood. Glad she didn’t flip. ❤️⛵️
We make a lot of trade-offs while living in such tight quarters.
Some serious wide eyed expressions Lauren. Excitement jumped from the screen. Tension filled the air. Fun video. Thanks.
When you can smile and laugh through stuff like this, you know you're going to make it!
At 6:54 the look you give each other says it all for me! Everytime you feel overwhelmed just replay this one moment in your mind, what you're doing is worth it all 🙌🏻
I grew up on the lakes in Texas. On lake Texoma which is quite large for a Texas lake we would get storms that produced 6 ft waves in high winds, sometimes gusts to 50-70 mph. Since I had been on a boat so much as a kid with my dad ( who feared nothing) I was never afraid on the water no matter what. Even had a tornado cross the lake while we were on the boat. At night! The only thing that made me a little nervous was the hail because it got almost baseball size and was falling almost horizontal. we were able to get out of the hail by beaching on a small island and getting under a concrete picnic table bumdled in sleeping bags for padding. It was actually kind of fun. 😃
You two are fantastic. Such good vibes from you and apart from a few bumps (stainless steel fabricators) you're always happy and that's inspirational. Happiness should always be the goal.
One place we really liked near where you are was Fort Myers Beach mooring field. It was about $320 or so a month when we were there, and had on demand pump out, a dinghy dock, showers, and a bus trolley that could get you around really cheap. Very protected, too. And, lots of cool beach bars within dinghy distance. Enjoying your videos!
I follow a bunch of live aboard sailors. Honestly . . . I love you two. The newness and innocents is so much fun and refreshing. You two are truly a pleasure. God has blessed you.
Lauren cannot do without her...COFFEE! Fair winds to you both...
Go as big as you can on the alternator ! In the end it will last longer. And and end up being cheaper.
Yes, what Charles Marik said. Also, don't forget, you'll rarely (maybe never) get the full rated output. It's going to be on the engine, so the heat will be a factor that reduces the output. Also, the output curve is important to know. So at your typical revs while motoring you won't get full output, not even close. Have you looked at RC's MarineHowTo.com website? He has some great info on choosing and installing an alternator. I got the Balmar Series 6 120amp just recently. It's a great piece of equipment. I thought that you guys had already done an alternator replacement?
Love your videos!
Can’t live without “ grandkids”
And it’s all about the “coffee”!
If you're worried about belts, check out the Accu-Link Adjustable Link V Belt system. Grab a box of that and don't worry needing a belt.
Glad to see the bottom was clean lol
As you informed us about how you are able to finance your lifestyle, it makes me appreciate what hard work and a do-it-yourself attitude can do.
I am proud and happy that your time in Chi Town was Not the end of your journey. Now you are true Blue Water Sailors and facing one of many storms that await you. Never fear stay together and remain with the boat Rule #1. Love following you on RUclips.
Lauren=straight hotness
Kirk= poor mans Dirk Nowitzki starter kit.
Both enjoyable in this vlog. Very entertaining y'all.
I got a great laugh out of your "As Seen On TV Commercial".
Can't live without fresh ground organic coffee ! ♡
Good job bringing the oars. I learned after a few incidents to never leave the oars at home and never trust an outboard.
You two have such great spirits. God speed good sailors.
Thank you!
I thought those scenes looked very familiar, your around Captiva Island! I am from Cape Coral. It is really nice out there! Pretty good fishing too! I could have motored out and said howdy !!
Those squalls are nothing, they come and go! Some drop so much rain you can’t see 30 yards ahead. We just pull over and wait. If a bridge is around we get behind it.
Man you picked tough place at low tide, it’s shallow out there!
WHEN WALKING IN DIRTY WATER ALWAYS SLIDE YOUR FEET ACROSS THE BOTTOM. IT GIVES STING RAYS A CHANCE TO RUN, SO YOU DON’T GET STUNG!!
I TAKE THE GRAND KIDS TO THE SAME LITTLE ISLAND YOU WERE ON THE END.
Having grown up in australia n hawaii,. I have been wearing sarongs for years
Love Captiva and The Mucky Duck. That whole area is great. We did St. Pete, Longboat, Venice, Captiva, then back up the coast on a Spring Break sail in 2021. We also have our racer slipped at Lighthouse Landing on Ky Lake (the mast-slappers are a real problem but I assure I’m not among them, lol). Binge watching this series has been very neat because I feel like there is so much commonly shared experiences although we’ve never met! Really love your way of presenting. So genuine. Not trying to make it Instagram-tabulous; just the real fun of cruising
It's just a squall boss! They come on yuh fast, and leave yuh fast!
Lions with a nice win today Kirk. Lets keep the wins coming
Still my favorite sailing vlog! You guys were my first now I’m watching over 20! The Wynns are my other, cannot believe you guys can do this life, you must be strong couples and good teammates.
Thanks Michael!
NO! I just did the giveaway but only now saw the deadline. Shucks. Oh well, hopefully there will be more in the future! I love the drone shots in this video! You guys are so talented and it's always a pleasure to watch your artful videos! Best,
Neal
The Bottom shot was the best shot
Dennis Breckner She has a nice ass!
Yea we know what Kirk was really watching and it wasn't on any screen LOL, I don't blame you Kirk lucky man.
I enjoy all y’all’s videos, and I agree Kirk you are a lucky man to be able to spend it with Lauren. Keep the videos coming you two.
You know guys, I get that you are giving her what you perceive is a complement, but some things are really better left unsaid. She is a human being, not just a piece of flesh.
I agree the bottom part is all clean
Clean....yes that was very CLEAN !
Lauren had a look of terror when the rain and hail storm hit.
Yes, I saw it too. That was panic mode. 😮
A big thumbs great video 👌 glad to see all happy and having fun
I look forward to your videos every week. Thank you :)
Standard afternoon Florida storm, come in hard and fast and leave just as quick!
Had to laugh when Kirk said “Dope” little picnic island.
If storms are coming wrap that jib tighter and put some tension on both sheets to stop it unwrapping!
You guys are awesome to watch. I love how authentic you are with your everyday life. I have now added sailing to my bucket list.
So cool to hear Paul!
Lauren can't live without her coffee.
🤘👍✌your friend
Ocean will teach you even more love.
RAIN?
Time to take a NATURE SHOWER!
LOL
You caught your first fish, and you don't what it is? Kirk, I can tell you what it is - it's small! :) Webhead USA
Lol yes it was small. A baitfish of some sort.
Great Video! I especially liked those fantastic views! My father has a motorhome on Sanibel all winter long, one of these days I will get lucky enough to get time off work to go and visit him.
Zaphoid Beeblebrox!!! Loved Doug Adans (R.I.P.). Even had the "Hitchiker" game on Commodore sixty four
I enjoyed the infomercial shtick with the blue screen and three easy payments. Thanks for another great one.
😆
nice to see you guys are back at it! Cheers
Great to finally see your video of our area, Sanibel and Captiva. The Green Flash was never worth the wait, which we did just like you two. Mucky Duck is way better, especially being right on the beach!! We’re you able to stop anywhere in Ft Myers beach? Halfway down the island is a great restaurant called Flippers. It’s on the water/bay at Big Carlos Pass, a draw bridge. Go in under the bridge, it’s the third building on the right at Lovers Key Resort. TJ from Ft Myers.
Cayo Costa is a great place.
You seem to weather the storms well. Good video. Take care.
wow, at 7:44 you both looked great, you prove that you "clean up" nicely! Good for you, that has to be every once in a while. Lucky man.
Funny i just discovered you chanel i use to live on z dock right by the boat yard where they lift your boat out for repairs and bottom jobs have fun and enjoy your trip. Dave
Love this channel!!
Love this episode ! I think the price on the man skirts is pretty high but I can see there value ! LOL !
Lol, can’t put a price on a cool breeze where it counts!
When you guys make it to the Keys DM us for anything! We live here on our boat with our three kids and puppy!
I miss the restaurant that used to be where the Green Flash is now. It was called Timmy's Nook, and had a killer grouper sandwich, and the old Florida charm that keeps getting bulldozed over. Love your videos, I've been following since you were shopping around for boats. Also fun to watch you cruise my local cruising grounds.
I love the Hitchhikers Guide reference.
Looks dry below. Not every boat would be so fortunate. Thanks for all of the great videos. I'm especially interested in this part of Florida.
...as a bone. Love that about our boat.
I missed where you were saling, but figured out it s Ft Myers FL. Just south of where I live. Sail safe!
Yup we were just north of Fort Myers in this episode.
Ahh,,, Captiva. Been going to SanCap since the early '60's!
Shirt design is cool, good job on that.
I saw that picture and I was like WHOA!! she cut her hair, GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then I watched the video and was like AWWW DAMN!!!
Lady looks like a dude?
That was your paparazzi there at the end.
lol!
Might be time for a South Pacific run for the winter
One day... My dream is to sail under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. -L
We have done pretty well on limited time and exposure on Airbnb without legitimate captain service... we'll have all our ducks in a row next year.
We work together as a team. It warms my heart to see you working together as a team. Silly comment maybe.
I have been drinking coffee longer than you guys have been alive. I don't do the Starbucks thing or other "coffee shop" coffees. I drink Folgers classic. So I ALWAYS have enough tucked away somewhere to get a can. I truly can't do without coffee.
Lauren loves her coffee. My flying habit is my budget killer.
Man I wear a sarong in the tropics like all the time. Especially after a dive or surf. Ya man you figured out the key to great airflow.
It is amazing! I've always been jealous of girls wearing skirts on a hot day. I'm on the hunt for less frilly sarongs now. -K
if you make it to Ft Myers Beach check out Matanzas on the bay for a great place to eat .
Red fish pass area is very shallow and narrow. Been there hundreds of times
Your videos always make me laugh which is a great thing thank you looking forward to seeing more guys
Good to hear Brad, thank you for sharing!
Love the skirt idea!
Forget the tshirts, sell the man-skirt. The mock tv ad was a nice touch to the story.
Glad to see your finely talking about changing you alternator. This should have been done when you put on more batteries.
It should have but we didn’t have the budget or the time and we were banking on having all our solar up and not needing it.
'You watchin where we're goin?'
'Ya.'
#noreally
very good video, shows what cruising is all about...loved it
Thanks, Patrick!
"You watchin where you're goin?" Uh, nope, that is not what I'm looking at.
Yep, at 11:33, that's how you end up running into day markers, LOL.
GAWD DAMN! I know I didn't win that tee shirt - I want a Sailing Soulianis man sarong! PS - been rockin the sarong on the farm since 2000 - they kick ass in the hay field whist baking in the sun on a tractor.
👍 I’m on the hunt. Ill figure out where to get some made.
Sorry, I was chuckling about the constant work, calls/emails. The reason being this is exactly how my wife and I vacation.
Awesome video guys
Cheers!
I can't live without coffee and so it is always in our budget
At the height of today's PC culture I'm going to buck convention and say thank you for the fabulous 'ass shot'. I very much approve. Congrats to you both.
Great way to clean the salt off the boat ….But you said that …)))
best barbeque weather ;)
Y'all be careful with that sun. One thing that happened to me was the back of my hands blistered from steering, had to use a pair of socks. I enjoy your videos. Fair seas guys ❤⛵👍
Yikes! That sounds painful.
Well, I'm 61 now and that happened 40 years ago, hard to believe. Skin and cancer doctor has taken a couple precancerous spots off. Oh, I'm a red head so it's the price us red heads pay. That was some storm glad y'all rode it out ok.
That was some fun,the storm got a bit hectic there for a while.Just thinking about your retractable centreboard. Was it still down when you were in the shallows in the ICW?Great to see you two happy and having fun, there must be a good balance of work and play, and it's working for you👍🙂
We did not have the CB down on the ICW. We don't use it all that often to be honest.
Hey guys, been following you since you left Chicago but first time to comment. Hate to tell you but that was no storm. When I was actively sailing, we called it a squall. You'll know when you get into a real storm. Hope you have the opportunity to deal with a bunch more of these before you encounter the real thing. Each one is a mini learning experience to get you ready for the real thing. You're doing great but I wonder if you're not over-thinking your power issues. I've done as much as three weeks cruising, docking once a week for fuel, provisions and shore power on an engine battery and a house battery and never felt like power was a problem. I had no solar whatsoever but one 100-watt panel ought to keep your computers, phones, etc., charged. We had no problem keeping the two batteries changed with short engine runs. Had a friend who cruised three years in the Caribbean and S. America on two batteries. In all of their stories, they never mentioned power problems. Good luck!!!
RE: the storm, sure it's not a 'storm' by beaufort scale, it was a frontal system, but it was still exciting! RE: the power. Our alternator was not putting out more than 10-15 amps, so our only charge source was solar. But there is no way that a single house battery would power even our computer usage, let alone, our instruments, lights etc. Not to mention we have fridge, not just an icebox. Had our alternator been charging at an appropriate rate we would have been fine charging while underway. But our goal is never to run the engine just to charge the batteries and so far we've managed to do that.
@@SailingSoulianis Interesting. I don't remember what kind of amperage we were getting from our alternator but we did have a portable refrigerator/freezer. Recently, I did build a solar generator to power our home fridge/freezer using two batteries and two 100-watt monocrystalline solar panels. Had a chance to try it out for real during Hurricane Michael last year, It generated enough 120-volt power to operate the fridge, my smart TV and my desk-top computer and still keep the generator batteries charged...so long as it was in full noonday sun. Unfortunately, we have lots of trees and clouds. Even with me moving the panels every 30 minutes to an hour, I couldn't get enough efficiency to run the fridge alone. It had no problem keeping up with the TV and computer and charging batteries, phones, walkie talkies, radios, flashlights, etc., when the TV and computer were not being used. We wound up taking some our frozen stuff to our neighbors who had a real generator. So...clearly I'm no expert on solar and I realize you guys are heavily dependent on your computers but with four(6) solar panels and four? batteries, it seems like way more than enough to meet your needs. Also you have a lot more power-hungry sophisticated electronics than we did. All we had was VHF radio and a loran. In any case, I hope you get it worked out. I enjoy your videos enormously. Makes me dream about getting back into but at 82 all I'm gonna do is watch you guys and reminisce (sp). And, when you're sailing, remember to foot to the headers. Never knew what that meant (and still don't) but an old salt passed it on to me when I was racing dinks in the early 70s. Thought it sounded good, so I'm passing it along to you.
Best video quality
Nice video, good to see your ground tackle performing. I couldn't tell in the video but it looks like you are passing the outboard between the boat and dinghy without a lease on it. It's best for it to be leashed to the boat or dinghy at all times. Having it leashed can also foil or slow down an outboard theft.
Great idea. We will figure out a system to do exactly that.
I just love watching your videos! And I'll be happy to buy a shirt to support your adventures. I just keep getting a recording of Kirk... lol, from the commercial.
lol
Another great video guys! Keep up the great work!
Thanks Marc!
beautiful Captiva. Same experience at Greenflash - Mucky Duck clearly being the better choice!
Hahaha loved the tv commercial 😂
😆
Lol mono hull owners always look like a meerkat troop lol peeking out from their hole to watch all the boats during a storm ⛈ 👀 😂
Haha, I never thought of that, but what a perfect description! -K
Great job on the Fine Print, I could barely read it. :D
That slow blink though. Where's it gone, honey? It was your winning formula. Oh well, whatever came next, eh?
Hiding from the storm.into this life were born hiden from the storm
You sure had lots of shots and editing rolled into one video, thanks!
When youre on the east coast the cliche "red skies in morning sailor take warning - red skies at night, sailors delight" is totally true. Until black clouds roll in. Then it's "HOLY CRAP WE NEED TO FRESHEN UP THE DITCH BAG!"
Lol
