F model will hover around 2° nose high. If you don't touch the cyclic and pull straight up on the thrust, all 4 landing gear should come off the ground at the same time. I personally like to pick the nose up before the rest of the helicopter in the real thing. This one is a bit wonky because no LCT implementation yet.
Hey! very cool! I have a friend overseas who is a Chinook pilot. It's so cool getting general tips from him. You too! Super impressed w the Chinook and her pilots. Powerful assets for sure.
Can you explain what you mean by taking the power out? Is that the throttle or collective? If it’s the throttle what is the key binding for that? Really thankful for your time to make this video and look forward to hearing what you have to say in your future videos!
Once those overhead engine control levers are in flight you’ll not touch them during normal operations before shutting down the aircraft. Any reference to power in and out is the collective, which in the Chinook is referred to as the power lever. The position of the power lever. Aka collective determines what the FADECs do as far as controlling the output of the engines.

Many thanks! I'm merging your instructions in with Wag's quick startup, to get a more comprehensive QSU. Seems to be working great. Don't know what HOTAS setup you have. I have a Thrustmaster Warthog Throttle and Stick. The throttle has a slider unit (up and down) which I've assigned to the Steering Knob (up is left, down is right - feels kind of ergonomic to me, even if it is translating up and down, to left and right) and it works perfectly analog, so while I'm flying with a VR headset, I don't need to look down at the knob at all to know exactly how I've set the steering, and there's an indent of center which work perfect in DCS.

I love that we now have a real 47 pilot to show us things, like we have Casmo for the 58 and 64. Thank you, for doing this :) Could you make do a video on the AFCS and DAFS and explain, what they do? Also, I havent quite found out what the flight director is. Is it an autopilot?
really looking forward to your videos on the Chinook! I want to make some vids of my own, but know nothing in comparison to you. Thanks for all your tips and knowledge.
It's a lot of fun. The first thing I bound other than my axis was the rear door. In my first 5 minutes of flying it I sat the rear wheels on the edge of a small building and dropped the rear door. It kind of seems like another "everyone gets a participation ribbon" type of helo like DCS has been putting out lately. I know it's brand new and they'll change things. I think the fact that I've been flying the newer Oh-6 mod every night for the last 3 months kind of messed me up. I can't wait to learn more about this big beast.
I'm glad I'm not going crazy because it felt unstable to me. Good to know that it's because the "automagic" isn't implemented yet. I was not a pilot but I'm used to the UH-60 mod which has the SAS implemented.
Good to see another hooker. I started in A/5/159th in Washington, then moved to the 160th later on. I love the Chinook, it is a great platform. I was a fixed wing pilot for yeaaaaaaars before moving to the Army to fly helicopters. I was apprehensive at first but my unit flew Chinooks so there wasn't a "selection" for me due to that. It was just pass/fail flight school, and I did well at Rucker. I also had great crew chiefs and maintenance support in the units I was in. Especially in the 160th, those folks are so squared away it is not funny. I learned on the D model, but moved to the MH-47 platform (D, E and some G time...). I remember my dad telling me when I started "watch out for the PSAS failures, the damn thing will get squirrely on you quick!!". I flew the D without PSAS and it wasn't a big deal. I guess the older Chinooks had issues, though, because it was one of the few things he was terrified of. He was also amazed at the triple hook system we had compared to what he rocked in 'Nam. He had friends who flew the ACH-47 (Birth Control in particular). Good times...
@47Driver thank you brother, your content is awesome, and you have a very effective instructional tone and demeanor. Like you, I have a strong affinity for the Chinook and a deep appreciation for its design and mannerisms. When you stop and think about the winds coming off the rotors under full load it's amazing. At max gross, the winds are strong enough they are equal to a category 5 hurricane at over 150mph...
Man I wish I had a place to set up my setup, I took many of 47 flights in the Stan. She’s my favorite aircraft alongside the C130. I’m def interested to see what you think of it.
CH46e driver here! Thanks for the video that answered a lot of my concerns, especially about the AFCS. What are your thoughts about the pedal authority, I put in some left or right pedal and this things spins like a top ? Again thanks for the video, it answered a lot of my questions/concerns.
Thanks for this. I am confused by the trim ball. When it is out to the left I apply left pedal to bring the ball central, but it always increases the slip/ skid. I know my pedals are set correctly because they work correctly in the hover…..?
@47Driver Thanks for the videos, perfect . One question ... trimming. I don't think the up, down, left, right trim is working yet. So when you talk about trimming, can I assume you're referring to the Trimmer button and the Trimmer Reset button?
Like most of our community, I eagerly awaited the arrival of the ED CH-47F and was naturally disappointed when at the last minute and despite some obvious clues which, with hindsight should have prepared me, it’s release was delayed. No need for me to point out the obvious shortcomings of any company that spins up hopes and expectations and yes, misleads their customers with disinformation, lack of information and so on. We are where we are as they say. So the CH-47F finally graces us old fashioned kids, with its arrival. Yes there are some real positives about the ‘Hook’ but unfortunately any number of positives are overlooked in the face of a few negatives - that’s a fact. Anyway, I have watched quite a few vids on the ‘Hook’ and all I can say is that I must have a different install to everyone else. The most common phrase ‘easy to fly’ is absolutely not my experience. I know how to fly DCS choppers and this one is terrible. Yes I know about trimming (1st time I heard of it on the collective though, sorry ‘thrust’, depending on which ED content you watch and by the way, bind the Thrust Brake switch on the Thrust Control Lever grip to then depress, to move the Thrust Control Lever or collective across its axis - well makes no difference as the collective moves over the axis regardless. Furthermore and despite @BritishAvgeek telling us to make sure we bind a key to the Centering Device Release (CD REL) button to depress when moving the Cycliq over it’s axis, well that does not work either. For the Cycliq you actually need to bind the force trim function and that does work. By default the Cycliq Trim is set to Auto and the System Sel set to ‘Both’ but that makes absolutely no difference to the flight behaviour. So either take off in a rolling take-off or a hover, increase the thrust appropriately and tilt the nose down no more than 2 in on the Longitudinal Stick Position Indic and it flies ok, for a few seconds, then pitches violently up or down and you can be sure if you look at the trimmed position on the little trim overlay, the Cycliq has not moved. Ok, so provided I am high enough, it’s possible to recover using some violent stick movement; settle down, apply force trim then it‘s erratic behaviour will rinse repeat again within seconds or the engine just cuts out. Other aircraft I have purchased previously were not in the early days of EA other than the Apache and that was fine from day one. In my view the ‘it’s in EA’ card doesn’t fly here as it’s sadly lacking some basic flight control and for the life of me I can’t fathom why no one else is griping about this. Here’s another customer who will unfortunately no longer be enticed to pick up anything thats in EA and just released.
Tandem Rotor physics are no joke. This is the most complex flight model that DCS has taken on, I can assure you. The behavior you are experiencing is not abnormal behavior for a tandem rotor helicopter without the systems in place to make the aircraft stable, which are not yet modeled. I get the sentiment about EA, that's your prerogative. Thanks for watching!
I'm using a VKB Gladiator joystick and VKB throttle. Should I have the "thrust" so that back is min power and forward is max power? Given that I don't have proper helo controls, was wondering which is more authentic?
I used to fly with an airplane-style throttle quadrant as well. I would reverse the axis so for collective/thrust UP would pull aft, and vice versa. I found it very challenging to use, however.
@@47Driver Sorry, should have said thanks for the videos, very helpful thanks. Re the Xtrident version, I can't really judge the flight model but the internal and external modelling is pretty nice, plus I like steam gauges until I miss the glass cockpit ;) I love how they've added dynamic cargo to DCS.
I´ve seen in the CDU, that you can turn on Power for EGI1 & 2. Is that a needed step to get the Nav system aligned, or is it some sort of back up and the alignment is completely automatic in the CH47F?
EGIs are not modeled at the moment and are not powered on that way usually. They power on when you Initialize the System via the start page which will come later. INU alignment happens later in the run up and is automatic. Most of the time the INUs are manually enabled after they've aligned by the pilots but they will enable themselves immediately on takeoff if we ever forget. Thanks!
I'm wondering if you can tell me if I'm doing something wrong or if it's just how things are for everyone right now. I understand that as it stands now not all the flight control systems are implemented which makes flying the Chinook a bit more effort than it otherwise would in reality. You mention this in your video. In my case though, I can't help but feel i'm missing something because my chinook just will not behaving itself. Take off and landings are always rough for me until I get used to the aircraft but flying the hook in a straight line is exhausting right now. I set power, trim the aircraft out and within seconds the aircraft is trying to pitch up or nose dive in to the ground. I appreciate with helicopters you're generally always making small corrections but I feel like i'm wrestling with the thing for every second of air time. Yes the AFCS is on. Is it the same community wide or have I missed a trick?
Great vid and i love your laid back delivery! I was lucky enough to ride in the back of a Chinook a couple of times as a teenager in the air cadets... They picked us up from Wimbledon Common and wanged us around south London with the back door open. Fun times! Having a great time getting to learn it in DCS.... I have a question though. How does the hover thrust work in the real? it seems to settle into a hover pretty easily in DCS. Is there a detent on the thrust lever or is it somehow automatically controlled? Also, what's the difference between the thrust lever and a collective?
@GotSpaceGame thank you. No detent and it's not automatic, just pull the correct amount of power and she wants to fly! Thrust and collective are the same. Tandem rotor helicopters have other ways of changing blade pitch collectively, so we call our collective lever the thrust lever to avoid confusion. And because it sounds cooler.
@@47Driver awesome! I'd love to see you do a vid flying basic manoeuvres with the controls position indicator showing so that you can see what inputs you're giving. Also i'd love to see an explainer of the readouts on the VSD screen and how to manage the thrust properly in different stages of flight.
Hi I am running the 47 and I get random rudder issues. Is it the wind or is it a bug you think? Its almost like I am actually applying alot of right rudder while in flight. Really weird. New here. Great video, i'll have to watch it 20 times. Had my first flight last night and I found the backend keeps trying to over take me, is that to do with the AFC you was on about?
Great video, very informative! New subscriber here for sure. Quick question though: Ground power steering...I bound the knob to the slideraxis on my HOTAS Warthog, since it has a slight center detent so I can feel when it centered. But, it doesn't work. I mean, I can see the power steering knob move properly, but the helicopter doesn't turn. Any ideas?
@@JediMasterMok Really? It needs to be off while taxiing? That might explain things in my case, since I usually switch it on before I waddle out to runway 🤥
@@endl3ss008 That is my understanding. AFCS set to OFF for power steering taxi. AFCS set to ON for takeoff. I'm just as new to the Hook as you are though!
How is the feeling compared to the real deal? :D I think it feels very weird. (iam not a ch47 pilot tho especially if you fly sideways and turn on the spot...

@@pierscockey never called it the hook or heard it referred to as the hook
nice video, my best friends from next hanger down flew them, never did find the time to get a ride with them. FS was the last time i ever flew a helo. might try this module out... btw can you record in full screen like we would see in the game... tks bro...
I am recording in full-screen but I play on a 49" Ultrawide. I will be changing some settings for the next video so people without a huge ultrawide can watch comfortably. Thank you
I love that we now have a real 47 pilot to show us things, like we have Casmo for the 58 and 64. Thank you, for doing this :)
Could you make do a video on the AFCS and DAFS and explain, what they do? Also, I havent quite found out what the flight director is. Is it an autopilot?
@KNJensen I'll go more in depth on those systems in my next video. Thank you for the support!
@@47Driver Love it, thank you! :)
Heck yeah brotherrrr
really looking forward to your videos on the Chinook! I want to make some vids of my own, but know nothing in comparison to you. Thanks for all your tips and knowledge.
Glad I could be of service. Thanks for watching!
Love the video, great content.
Man i would love to become a chinook pilot
Awsome stuff brother! Whata machinery. Thanks.
Hey there. Pls do more. Subscribed.
I'm glad I'm not going crazy because it felt unstable to me. Good to know that it's because the "automagic" isn't implemented yet. I was not a pilot but I'm used to the UH-60 mod which has the SAS implemented.
Thank you and welcome to RUclips I guess. Looking forward to more content
This is amazing, thank you for stopping by and thank you for your service. The 160th is no joke.
Thanks for the knowledge, subbed!
I was playing with you yesterday in gray flag saw that x infil nice flying
cant wait for that "more in depth" conent.
Big thanks for this
Thanks can you show a video of your settings of keys?? :)
I can do that, yeah
CH46e driver here! Thanks for the video that answered a lot of my concerns, especially about the AFCS. What are your thoughts about the pedal authority, I put in some left or right pedal and this things spins like a top ? Again thanks for the video, it answered a lot of my questions/concerns.
Subbed man ! My dad flew 47's out fortrucker
Thanks, subscribed!
Great video!
Thank you!
Many thanks for sharing. Great video. Subscribed
Thanks for this. I am confused by the trim ball. When it is out to the left I apply left pedal to bring the ball central, but it always increases the slip/ skid. I know my pedals are set correctly because they work correctly in the hover…..?
I think the trim ball is bugged right now.
@47Driver
Thanks for the videos, perfect . One question ... trimming. I don't think the up, down, left, right trim is working yet. So when you talk about trimming, can I assume you're referring to the Trimmer button and the Trimmer Reset button?
Yes. AFCS Beep Trim is not yet modeled. Thank you!
Thanks for the vid. Greetings from Down Under. Cheers Red
Wide video format is completely unreadable.
Noted. Still new to all this and figuring out settings. I'll work on fixing this so people without ultrawide monitors don't have any issues. Thanks!
@@47Driveryeah best to make the vid to the wider audience (no pun intended 😂) keep it up mate 👍🏻

Yes I know about trimming (1st time I heard of it on the collective though, sorry ‘thrust’, depending on which ED content you watch and by the way, bind the Thrust Brake switch on the Thrust
Control Lever grip to then depress, to move the Thrust Control Lever or collective across its axis - well makes no difference as the collective moves over the axis regardless.
Any idea how many inches the Thrust lever moves up and down from ground detent to Max Thrust? Thanks for the videos!
Couldn't say honestly. Thank you!
What else can one do with this FM other than hover, take off, and landing?
And how does this compare to the one in msfs?
Great video. Thanks.
Thanks !
This worked for the xtrident CH47D for xplane as well (apart from the screens obviously) :)
Glad to hear it. I haven't tried that one but I've heard it's pretty good!
@@47Driver Sorry, should have said thanks for the videos, very helpful thanks. Re the Xtrident version, I can't really judge the flight model but the internal and external modelling is pretty nice, plus I like steam gauges until I miss the glass cockpit ;) I love how they've added dynamic cargo to DCS.
awesome thanks
Can this be flown effectively with a jotstick and throttle?
I´ve seen in the CDU, that you can turn on Power for EGI1 & 2. Is that a needed step to get the Nav system aligned, or is it some sort of back up and the alignment is completely automatic in the CH47F?
EGIs are not modeled at the moment and are not powered on that way usually. They power on when you Initialize the System via the start page which will come later. INU alignment happens later in the run up and is automatic. Most of the time the INUs are manually enabled after they've aligned by the pilots but they will enable themselves immediately on takeoff if we ever forget. Thanks!
@@47Driver okay good to know, thank you:)
Subscribed.
Thank you!
Would be better if you show how you tuned axis. It s very personal, but it would be start position for newby.
It's an issue with the flight model right now, I'm having similar issues in cruise flight. Just have to stay on top of the pitch.
I was thinking maybe engine revs too high but you are the professional lol. I was an 11B in the Army and 101st. I loved riding in the 47. Hopefully they bring in the UH 60 as well. Thx
Any Chance for you to show how you set up your bindings? Love your videos. New to DCS and flying helos. I am constantly crashing. I use VKB Gladiator NXT EVO Joysticks.
As this is becoming highly requested, yes. You can expect a video on this soon. Thank you!
@@47Driver Great, Because my bindings don't work that well.
You mentioned "previous" video. Is that the MSFS video?
Here from the PrickleyHedgeHog reference.
🤘🤘🤘🤘
New here. Great video, i'll have to watch it 20 times. Had my first flight last night and I found the backend keeps trying to over take me, is that to do with the AFC you was on about?
Make sure you AFCS is on. Take the AFCS SYS SEL switch on the canted console, below the center MFD, and turn it to both.
@@47Driver Thank you buddy, I love cargo running and helos.
Can anyone help me with setting the barometric altimeter? I can't figure out how to set it.
As of right now, seems to not be implemented.
Great video, very informative!
New subscriber here for sure.
Quick question though:
Ground power steering...I bound the knob to the slideraxis on my HOTAS Warthog, since it has a slight center detent so I can feel when it centered.
But, it doesn't work. I mean, I can see the power steering knob move properly, but the helicopter doesn't turn. Any ideas?
Confirm the swivels are in "steer"?
Switch is in steer. Still issues.
Make sure AFCS is set to OFF. Not sure if this is required, but it appears it is part of the procedure.
I would like to see the Cargo System
How is the feeling compared to the real deal? :D
I think it feels very weird. (iam not a ch47 pilot tho
especially if you fly sideways and turn on the spot...
Nothing beats the real deal lol. But this is fun I'm enjoying it so far. Just wait until the AFCS and like systems are fully fleshed out!
How do we turn of that mors code like beep . In a hot start there is this far, gone beep beep beep an I can't find it to kill it
Look on your CAP, center console where all radio volume adjustment knobs are. Bottom row has 4 knobs, make sure they're all pulled up not pushed in. You're likely hearing a VOR coming through the first pin.
@@47Driver it was as you said thank you
Can you tell me where the main rotor stopper is? To stop their rotation.
@@NightGameRus the CH-47F does not have a rotor brake.
@@47Driver Does this mean that prolonged rotation of the blades after the engine is turned off is a common occurrence for the Chinook?
@@NightGameRus Yes. They take quite a while to slow down on their own. Blades weigh about 350lbs a piece, lots of mass.
@@47Driver Thanks more for the explanation. After Apache, I looked at all the panels in search of a brake. Thanks, I'll know now.
What map and base are you flying out of on DCS?
