      KCMO is literally the EASIEST airport I've EVER been too. Most airports you have to get there hours in advance. If my flight leaves at 5PM, I can get there at 3:45PM and still have time to go through security and check my bags. I've never had problems finding parking or a seat. Where did he get this info from lol

    • @7997martymar
      @7997martymar 5 лет назад +11

      Literally the only two things that suck about our airport is that it's sooooo far away from the hub of the metro area - and then if you're a tourist or between planes here for a minute and having to spend any amount of time while waiting on a flight, there's definitely a lack of amenities compared to other major airports. If you live here, though, and you're just getting on your plane or getting picked up after your flight, this airport is the best. You can get in and out sooooo damned fast it'll make your head spin.

    Most of the things on this list are totally inaccurate. I was born and raised in Chicagoland/Chicago and I moved down here 5 years ago. The people actually love how smooth and easy the airport is. The spring and fall are months long (plural) and are my favorite seasons here. Winter is so much more mild than Chicago and elsewhere. Crime is really actually low. This is a much safer place than most big cities. There’s so much outdoor stuff and fun stuff to do, that I wouldn’t trade this place for anywhere else in the country. It’s extremely affordable, that water bill stuff is over blown. He totally glosses over the fact that we are a Google Fiber city and have some of the best and most reasonably priced internet in the country (within city limits). They are building a brand new airport, expanding public transportation, and doing a ton to be more inclusive. We have an entire small business development council, along with funding from the Kaufman foundation to foster and grow small businesses. A days drive from the Rockies or Chicago or Dallas or Nashville. How can you beat that? I can go on and on about how great it is here. But on the other hand, maybe this video is a good thing. Don’t want the best kept secret in America getting out....🤔 🤫

    • @KS5040
      @KS5040 4 года назад +10

      @@pamsollars8940 Missouri is a mixture of the Midwest and South and has no nice high quality lakes like you commonly find in the northern Great Lakes region... Iowa is probably the only state that no one would ever debate it being 100% Midwest. Better people, ha ha that is quite subjective. KC people are pretty cliquey and closed off, most of them aren't too friendly to outsiders. Social culture is decades behind most other larger metro areas, people get married way too young, resulting in a horrible environment to meet single people if you are in your 20's or 30's... KC weather is also the worst of everything, with temperatures occasionally rising or falling more than 50 degrees in one day. Way too hot and humid in the summer, and spring far too short.

  • @timothyepotts
    @timothyepotts 5 лет назад +140

    I've traveled all over the world and KC has the BEST airport I've ever traveled trough! It may be a little outdated, but there is no other major city airport in the world (or at least any airport I've ever been to... and I've been to A LOT) where you can arrive at the airport, check your baggage, clear security and be at your gate in less then 20mins. Leaving the airport is even easier, If you didn't check a bag, you can deboard your flight and be leaving the airport in less then 3 minutes. Uber drivers are always waiting just outside the terminal. Even if you did check a bag though, baggage claim is never far away and is always right by an exit. Also, if you have any amount of a holdover, you can catch an Uber for a quick 8 min. drive south to Zona Rosa, where there is food, shopping and entertainment, and you don't have to worry about being back at the airport hours before your flight.
    The only people who complain about KC's airport are the people who never (or rarely) use it and the airlines. A new airport will only mean the cost of flights out of KC will go up (a lot), long wait times through security, long distances to travel to get to your gate, more (then it already is) expensive airport food, long baggage check lines, etc... The only advantage I can see from having a truly international airport is that you won't have to make a connection through one of the port cities for international flights.

There are great bars, breweries, restaurants, and the BEST BBQ in the country (Texas, Memphis, & Carolina don’t even compare). But the thing that stands out the most; The people & the hospitality. I have been to most of the continental United States & aside from Louisiana, I have never felt genuine human connection like you do here. Midwest hospitality is real & AMAZING! People actually listen to you & converse WITH you rather than speak TO you. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better environment to raise a family or settle down long term. Big city benefits, without many of the big city caveats. As always, life is what you make it, but I’m continually impressed with the quality of life KC has to offer. Lived in kcmo for three years in an upperclass suburb after living 50 years in Minnesota , North Dakota , Colorado, , here is my take , yes to spread out , yes to high crime ( personal experience) yes to no spring or fall , yes to hot muggy summers , yes to stuck in middle of nowhere , yes to welcoming people , yes of course no beaches, yes to ridiculous water bills, yes to high segreg, yes to rivalry , ( gets kinda stupid at times) , yes to nothing much to do if not a big sports fan , don’t know or care about dating , this guy is spot on with about everything he says , not trying to knock kc but this is exactly my experience here. For those of you who were born here and lived most of your lives here , you don’t see it , which is understandable, it truly feels like an island in the desert , yes good restaurants, but you can’t eat barbecue 7 days a week and lower level jobs don’t pay very well to be nice about it , why am I still here you may ask , quit frankly was tired of the -40 temps of northern Minnesota and the three month summers followed by 9 months of winter , also an employment opportunity that I had to investigate, but re-thinking my decision now.

      Kansas City has far too many complacent, apathetic, and risk adverse locals who hate any type of change. In a number of ways it is way more like the South than the Midwest, and that isn't a good thing. The horrid weather, unfriendly people, and the mostly low paying jobs are big negatives. You see, the low cost of living, low tax, and low wage model only goes so far. Infrastructure in Missouri is a big joke, and the low IQ people just made national news in the Lake of the Ozarks. Lakes in MN are far nicer!

    I use MCI quite frequently and I have to say it is one of my favorite airports. The wait time for security is little to none, and even on busy holidays it’s very quick and easy. Also plenty of seats in the waiting area.

    • @KS5040
      @KS5040 4 года назад +2

      The basic design of MCI was immediately OBSOLETE post 9/11 security standards. KC responded by putting band-aids on the problem, when in reality a new terminal should have been in the works right away. The basic lack of amenities in the secured area, restrooms that bordered on a developing 2nd/3rd world country in quality/quantity, outrageous prices for any food/drink, lack of charging stations, poor lighting, cramped conditions, and unfriendly TSA put quite the black mark on KC. Thank goodness enough locals got the memo and saw through the garbage heap and wanted to make progress before 10 other cities pass KC up in importance.

    To everyone triggered by this, let me point out that both the beginning and end of the video talk about how great KC is. As someone who has spent over three decades living in KC, I wanted to hit the 10 reasons not to live here in order:
    10: Water bills - I'm not sure about this one. I think perhaps this is a KCMO thing, and since I've never actually lived IN Kansas City, Missouri, it's never effected me. I've lived in Independence, Edwardsville, Liberty, Shawnee, and Merriam; I never felt like my water bills was high. Maybe I just take short showers?
    9: Isolated - Obviously, yes, this is a fact. If you don't think so, I guess you've just never considered that larger population centers(the coasts, the Chicago area) have a lot more cities and people in close proximity. This isn't an issue if you're not a beach or mountain person, of course, but it's a fair point.
    8: KCI - While I agree with that list that La Guardia is worse, KCI isn't great. I've flown a number of times, and when it's not busy, everything is fine. Sure, there's not a lot of food/shops/etc. that other airports have, but it's not bad. The issue is when it's busy, the small trio of terminals don't handle the extra bodies well. Yes, they're working on a new one. Yes, that, by itself, lends credence to the airport being... not great.
    7: Spread out/Public transit - Again, obviously. I can't imagine anyone living here who doesn't realize this, unless they've literally never been anywhere else and have no comparison. Unless you live in the heart of the city, the buses are a very poor method of getting around. The street car/trolley thing is cool, but super niche, and(again) doesn't help the majority of people who live in the 'burbs.
    6: Taxes - I think this is also a KCMO only thing, but I'm not sure. I know the 1% tax is, and only effects those who live and/or work in KCMO proper, which I haven't for a long time. I'm not sure about the sales tax, I just pay whatever pops up on the register... perhaps I'll pay more attention to it.
    5: Rivalry - I think this is a bit silly, but, then again, people are SUPER angry in this comment section so.... I know that people often have trouble wrapping their head around the fact the the KState vs KU vs MU thing is of zero interest to me, since everyone is sort of assumed to have a side. Also, the BBQ thing is a pretty big deal: don't get into a 'best BBQ in town' discussion unless you have a lot of time to kill.
    4: Segregation - Full disclosure: I'm a middle-class white guy, so it's hard for me to really understand this topic the way a person of color would. That said, when I graduated from Liberty HS, I think about 97-98% of my class was white, so.... yeah, I feel like those statistics are probably pretty accurate. Good to hear it's improving, at least.
    3: Weather - Seriously. If you don't think this is a valid point, I would start to doubt you live in KC. We complain about the weather, joke about the weather, and even take a sort of twisted PRIDE in how totally chaotic and shit our weather is. Summer IS often very hot and humid, winter IS often cold, dry, and windy. Hail, tornadoes, and ICE STORMS! They forgot to mention the ice storms we get every few years that knock out power in huge sections of the city. Fun! Yeah, the weather here sucks.
    2: Dating - I know I had poor luck dating, to the extent that it was easier to meet someone outside of KC than to meet someone I clicked with here. We've been married for a while, now, so I can't say whether it's any better/worse than it was back then, though.
    1: Crime - This is empirical data. Sure, there are subtleties to consider(like crime being largely confined to certain areas), but I've done research on this, myself, and found similar results. Chicago had a lower homicide rate, last time I checked.
    Over all, I don't think there was too much unfair shade in the video, and(once again) they started AND ended the video talking about how GREAT KC is.

    I'm from St. Louis (born and raised). I've been to Kansas City several times and have always had a wonderful time. The way i look at it is they're both great cities...Kansas City being more like a small version of Los Angeles, and St. Louis being more like a small version of New York City, seemingly to me, if we must compare cities. Please note, Mr. "From Here to There"...only boring people allow themselves to become bored, and only cynical people find things to complain about. I've been to many "great cities"....Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, etc...all have wonderful amenities and activities (just like Kansas City and St. Louis do, unless you're too lazy, or cynical or inept to look for them), and they all have their negative points, too...but I'm not gonna get on a soapbox (or make a RUclips video, yet) to complain about the negatives...we all have 'em...no city is perfect. Why can't you just stick to positive points instead of insulting people by trashing their cities, states, etc. instead of coming off like some kind of self centered know-it-all fool...???

    I moved here to KC, KS three years ago from Colorado. The people that love it here have likely never lived anywhere else. Here is my take on the points made in this video:
    All the pros: True
    10. Expensive water bills: Yes. My utility bill for my 2 bedroom apt is over twice what I ever payed in Colorado. (My utilities are combined into a single bill)
    9. It's isolated: Meh, well duh. You could make a similar argument for just about anywhere.
    8. The airport stinks: Not really. I fly back to CO to see family fairly often and always kinda liked the small airport. You have to park a long ways away in the economy parking for $7/day but a bus comes promptly to shuttle people back and forth. Yes, there does seem to be a lack of seating. The security checkout is awesome fast.
    7. It's really spread out: Yes, you better like driving. On the plus side, there isn't much traffic. Compared to Denver, the traffic is very light. But you will have to drive a lot. The public transit sucks or nonexistent. I tried to use the bus while my car was in the shop for a week. I was used public transit being very prompt, but I guess many parts of the country it's not. From my experience the bus schedule is more like a +/- 15min window. I missed the bus the last time I rode because I was 5 min early and I missed the bus by 10 mins. wft
    6. Hidden taxes: Yes. Sales tax is closer to 10% now. When I first moved here I thought the cashier had rang things up wrong. Sadly no.
    5. The MO-KS rivalry: Not really? Maybe because I'm not in high school, but I've only heard there was such a thing. Never seen or experienced it first hand.
    4. It's really segregated: I don't think so. Umm, hey Google... "KC area has been one of the most racially segregated in America. But not anymore", (KC Star 2019) OK, so likely it is still, but I never noticed or even thought of that.
    3. The weather: This is pretty accurate. Kind of sucks in general. It rains pretty often (or a lot compared to CO), which is fine with me. The humidity is on par with the east coast because the elevation is only about 900 feet. The winter is cold and stays cold, the summers are hot and stays hot and humid. It's predominately freezing cold or hot as hell mixed with rain and tornadoes.
    2. Bad for singles: Yes. I am single and this place is awful. I'm over 24, and as the video says, it's next to impossible to meet anyone at all. Been here almost three years and don't know a single person. Dating apps? after being stood up 4 times in a row, I gave up. Meet people through work? I've never even had lunch with an immediate coworker. When I suggested a team lunch they literally laughed at me. When I suggested/offered drinks after work, actually laughed at me. So, no I haven't made any friends or met people through work.
    1. crime: Yes. You can't turn on the news without hearing about a shooting. I never heard so many sirens in my life. I know that isn't a good judge, but still what the * is going on out there. Downtown KC closes down early, near dusk, due to the high crime after dark.

      Great detailed answers for the most part. It is very true that only the delusional KC homers think KC is a great place to live as it is painfully obvious they've never lived in nicer areas of the country that cost more, but have far more opportunities. KC locals are very complacent and apathetic for the most part. They hate any kind of change no matter what it is, and would rather stick with what they are comfortable with and know. The weather is constantly horrid, the people aren't friendly, and the economy there is not as good as the locals would have you believe.

      @@KS5040 This is so true. I love KC, but the locals are stubborn as hell and hate change and so KC changes little. People there still love that crappy airport for example. Thank god they are finally building a new terminal. But you can go there every ten years and see few differences. At least downtown is no longer a total craphole. It's not up to par with most mid sized cities, but it's way better than it was. KC has some great things about it, but it also lacks a lot, especially when it comes to recreation. I live on the east coast now which is much more my style, but KC will always be special.

    I have a son that lives there... As far as long drives, LOL. What big city isn't spread out.
    The traffic is the best I've seen for a big city. It has no fall or winter? Huh? Have you been down south... It's hot in the summer? Have you been down south? It's very cold in the winter? Huh? Have you been to Minnesota, Wisconsin?
    I've been to every major city in the U. S.... Kansas city is one of the cleanest cities I've been to... I will give you the obvious beaches, and being in the middle of the country...
    But there is a ton of things to do in KC besides sports...20 minutes from the city, your picking apples off the trees, farms everywhere, great breweries, great shooting ranges... Anyway, spend some times in these cities instead of just taking stats of the internet

    I don't understand why people are disliking the video. To my understanding he has a series based off of why not to live in a certain city. I like in KC and love it, it doesn't mean he can't talk about the negatives. Of course I'm playing devils advocate here but I believe that what he said was ok and I relate to the water bill crisis.

    I word of advice, which by the way has nothing to do with discrimination. I observe and base my opinions on the actions and behavior of an individual. I myself am of mixed race. Be very cautious with regards to who will be your neighbors. I am currently living near Indian computer engineering students. Ever since they moved in I have been having issues with my Wifi and computer network being hacked. Besides that, they like to save money and so they will fit about 4 people in a small 1 bedroom apartment. Which causes excessive noise at all hours. Additionally they like having phone conversations outside which usually tends to be in front of other tenants apartments which can cause a disturbance. When they use the laundry room they leave the clothes in the machines over night and do not clean up after themselves once they are done. Additionally, They are not very clean in general. Once a cat must have taken a dump near their front door and they never cleaned it up. This attacted flies in my home. It was a mess. By the way, generally speaking, they carry some kind of weird superiority complex. They think they are better than everyone, and they also think they should not have to pay for things. Don't be fooled if the seem nice. I'd play it safe because when you sign a lease you are going to be stuck.

    Oh good grief! Seriously ? I think the KC metro area is awesome! I moved here from the East Coast, NYC metro area on the NJ side, in Woodbridge Township (a nice place to live). Since then I have lived in Olathe Kansas which is in Johnson County KS, most of my adult life. AND >> I have to say, I am very happy that my children were born and raised here! The schools are excellent, there is a lot to do in the metro, people are FRIENDLY and the BBQ - you can't beat it! I have traveled the US from coast to coast so it's not like I haven't been anywhere. The airport has never bothered me. You can pull up to the curb, let someone out, they walk in and there is their gate! Much better than having to walk a mile, take a tram and so on just to get to your gate. Who cares that it's a 40 minute drive from most of the metro area just to get there. It's all open highway (Interstate). Many many people in the KC metro area have a strong faith in God and they are not ashamed to admit it. People are kind and generous here as well. I can go on and on but I will stop here. Oh one more thing, the only thing that bothers me about living here is that I miss the ocean. That's it!
