Hi J Jay, it may be related to methadone, it's hard to say without knowing your history. If the acid reflux is this bad I'd go back to see the doctor again. 40mg of Omeprazole would be a sensible increase.

Thank you for this excellent video. I am 65 years old and have been on these meds since 2005 have been on omeprazole also have been on Enbrel which is now Brenzys, 50 mg once weekly, sulfasalazine 500mg twice daily, omeprazole 20mg twice daily and Naproxen 500mg twice daily. I have told my family doctor and my rheumatologist that the omeprazole is not working. The acid reflux is getting worse. I was told by both Ease the dosage to two in the morning and two in the evening. The sulfasalazine was causing severe pain on my right side to the point when driving I had to pull over. The naproxen was doing the same. I have weened myself off the way I learnt from a doctor on RUclips. My rheumatologist was livid. I kept telling him about the pain and swelling on my right side, he told me it was all in my head and not to watch doctors on RUclips as they give false information. I told him the pain is not in my head it is on my right side. He said this after just looking at the swelling on my right side. He told me to increase the dosage oh all three pills. I asked him to try something else he told me that I am not a doctor and to stay off RUclips and google as they only provide false information. I told him the only false information I am getting is from him. It is so hard these days to find a good doctor.

I took this for 4 years due to severe acid reflux.
Once I twigged on I was drinking far to much, eating the wrong foods, was over weight and hadn't worked out for years. I decided to change, I only drank at weekends, started eating healthy with 1 cheat day per week and went steady with the chilli's, I started working out and lost weight, after 6 to 8 months I had no more painful acid reflux only bloating so I drink bicarbonate in water once every 3 days and it seems to do the trick.
A change in life style is paramount to get rid of omeprazole

Do not downplay the addictive effect of Omeprazole. My wife had such severe issues coming off of that stuff, constantly had severe heartburn and acid stomach. Halfing the dosage didn't help. She had to go cold turkey at some point. Basic Acid-Base balance tablets didn't help, but you know what did eventually? Drinking a small shot glass full of apple vinegar each morning. She's off those pills now and will be for good, hopefully. You are right, not enough people are informed about this. Even most doctors are clueless!! You really are the best, Dr. Sam Bailey.

I have been taking omeprazole for 26 years, after a peptic ulcer, and GERD. Initially I used to take one 20mg every day. As my symptoms declined, I reduced it and only took it when I felt discomfort. For the last 15+ years I have only been taking one tablet every 2-4 days, but sometimes I do not need it for over a week. My GP is comfortable with that.

The purpose of the stomach is to digest food, breakdown the proteins, carbohydrates, amino acids. Stomach acid is absolutely essential for creating a sterile environment against infections such as bacterial. Microbial and fungal infiltration to name just a few. The importance of good stomach acid is crucial if we are to experience good health and vitality. The lining of the stomach contains roughly 100 Trillion parietal cells which generate hydrochloric acid and pepsin. Anything that interferes with this essential process will result in (a) lowered resistance to infections, from a variety of sources, (b) multiple vitamin and mineral deficiencies, especially Vitamin B12, Iron, calcium, magnesium to name just a few, (c) a greater risk of intestinal parasites, (d), an increased risk of developing psychiatric disorders, depression. Anxiety, and a whole array of other neurological disorders, due to a deficiency of up to 13 neurotransmitters, some of the more well known being serratonin, and GABA, both of which are now becoming increasingly common, as despite the fact they they affect the brain and nervous system they are actually made in the stomach.
If we look at one form of bacteria, known as Helicobactor pylori or H/ Pylori, this gram negative bacteria is responsible for a whole array of medical conditions such as GERD, reflux esophagitis, and heartburn, resulting from the inflammation that it creates. This bacteria then locks on to the lining of the stomach and injects urease which in turn makes the stomach even more alkaline by neutralizing the stomach acid, and therefore its environment. However in my research based over 34 years, I have found that those patients with a PH above 3 - 3.5 are more likely to have H /Pylori, as this bacteria tends to favour a more alkaline environment, in addition when the PH of the stomach goes beyond those levels both the upper and lower esophageal sphincters will now fail to close properly resulting in GERD, reflux esophagitis, and heartburn, as even the smallest amount of acid is now able to rise through the now open sphincters and generate all the previously mentioned symptoms. So its never too much stomach acid that causes this devastation its actuality too LITTLE ! Which in turn brings me on to the subject of PPI's, as we can now clearly see that any medication that effectively lowers the pH of the stomach is destined to cause multiple vitamin and mineral and trace element deficiencies, a lowered ability to breakdown and absorb proteins and carbohydrates, a weakened immune system, resulting in a greater amount of bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasite infections, a greater risk of developing serious mental illness, depression, anxiety, and other neurological conditions, bone fractures and osteoporosis, fatal heart disease, chronic kidney disease and not least to Cancer !
It is self-evident therefore that taking any medication that effectively lowers the pH of the stomach is destined to cause all of the above conditions and more, when we prevent our stomach and digestive system from working, we stop our bodies and even our immune systems from working. So avoid these medications at all costs.

Good information. You may have missed some important side effects. I was given Omeprazole in 2017 for acid reflux. After a couple of weeks, I started having some of the side effects that you described. I spoke with my MD and was told not to worry because they will pass. Had diarrhea, slight stomach pain, headache etc. I drank lots of water balanced my meals with the help of my wife who is an RN. Nothing seemed to get better. In fact, they got worse over time. I started feeling like I had run a marathon in my sleep and woke up feeling I had 5 coats of chainmail on. No energy at all. My stomach ache got worse, my headaches never stopped, and in a matter of 6 months I went from 247 lbs down to 189lbs. I could not keep anything down, nothing I ate stayed down after the first 2 months, sometimes not even water. I always felt like I had been 10 rounds with Mike Tyson and then ran over by a train. My doctors could not find what was going on. I could not even work it got so bad. I was given an advise test which basically said I had systemic Lupus. I found out that the side of my family I never really knew had lots of history with autoimmune diseases. One uncle had 5 daughters that each had autoimmune diseases. An Aunt that was diagnosed with lupus in her late 50's and died from complications from it. What a shock. My doctors had done 3 colonoscopies and twice checked out my throat and stomach. { I forget what that one is called] Nothing was found. Meanwhile, I was getting worse and worse. In March of 2019 the pharmacy, I was getting the Omeprazole from asked me if I needed any counseling for any of my meds. I asked him if any of them caused the other meds to counter react to each other. I explained to him what I had been dealing with. So we checked them out and made sure. No, he said but would you like us to start putting all the info them in the bag with your meds. This will tell you the dose, side effects, and any info you might need. I said of course. As I stood there reading them all, about 6 different ones I get the shock of my life and an ahh haa moment. As I am reading the last one, which is the omeprazole, I realize that out of the dozen or so side effects I had about 10. One side effect said may cause Lupus! The next one said, may make Lupus symptoms worse! .Of course diarrhea, stomach upset, nausea, headache, etc. When I read this to the Dr. the next day she about had a cow! LOL. This was my MD. I also called my new Rheumatologist and told her. We all were very shocked because they were not even aware of these side effects. I stopped it cold turkey. It has been over a year since I stopped taking it and I am finally getting some of the weight back. I started feeling better about 2 months after stopping it. I still have systemic lupus and psoriatic arthritis but I am feeling way better since I stopped taking the Omeprazole. I have also moved back to Ga from Ca. and my new MD and Rheumatologist have both informed me that yes the omeprazole caused 90% of what was going on with me. Although I may have had lupus far longer than I ever knew the omeprazole brought it out worse. All I can say is WOW!!!!!

LOW stomach acid causes the upper sphincter to relax, allowing acid into the esophagus. Low acid symptoms are about the same as excess acid. Older people tend to have less acid, especially on low salt diets as your body needs the chloride in salt to make stomach acid.

I have had systemic lupus for nearly 27 years and was put on Prednisone to keep it in check. The Prednisone causes acid reflux, so I was put on Zantac for 10 years or so to control that. Then the warnings about long term use of Zantac caused my Nephrologist to switch me to Omeprazole, which I've been taking the last 17 years or so. The Lupus attacked my kidneys, which failed. My wife was a match and gave me a kidney 7 years ago. I'm still on the prednisone (for life) and still taking the Omeprazole daily for the reflux with no apparent side effects. Its a game changer.

Can you do1 or more videos on lymphedema & the treatment of it? Most medical people seem to believe that lymphedema is only seen in cancer patients. Nothing could be further from the truth. In my case, an injury that seriously damaged the soft tissue in my left leg at the age of 12 started the issue in that leg. Years later several abdominal surgeries and a parathyroid gland removal at the base of my neck over several years has caused the lymphedema to show up all over my body. For years I was misdiagnosed over and over again. I was told not to worry about it. I still struggle with the medical community to get proper treatment as again, this condition is apparently just not known well. I have gotten compression garments as treatment from my medical provider, but so much more is needed. Thank you for this video on omeprazole as I have taken 1 capsule, 2 x daily for more than 15 years. Prior to that I took Aciphex which worked very well. Because there has not been a generic available for Aciphex in the US and my provider wouldn't cover it, I switched to omeprazole.

I began taking Nexium 40 mg (1991) when I had ulcers in my esophagus (having first experienced GERD in high school) . Doctors kept me at that dosage until a study in Sweden indicated it may impede the absorption of calcium and result in bone fractures. After one endoscopy of my Barrett's esophagus (possible pre-cancerous condition), my doctor reduced the dosage to 20 mg based on that study and it worked just as well as 40. At age 72, I had an osteoporosis diagnosis which may have been related to many years of Nexium (now generic omeprazole). When I miss a dosage (rare), by lunchtime my stomach reminds me I missed a dose. The only other possible side effect I have noticed is a pain in the abdomen almost always a couple hours before awakening, just enough to disturb sleep, and it disappears as soon as I am upright. It occurs irregularly and may occur a few days in a row. I am now on Prolia for my bones and my last DEXA scan shows osteopenia, not as bad as osteoporosis. (Also walk 1 hour every day, lift light weights 3 days a week and take 1000 mg of calcium daily).
Omeprazole works for me and is necessary for me to avoid GERD every day.

I was prescribed this several years ago. I had some terrible stomach pain and was throwing up. Not all the time, but it was getting more regular. I also felt a lump in my stomach - more noticeable as I lie on my stomach when I sleep. Doc decided I had a hiatus hernia and prescribed Omeprazole without sending me for tests. The pain went and so did the symptoms. A few months later it came back - I'd not had a regular prescription so went back. Was sent for an endoscopy. Nothing wrong. A week later after the best night's sleep I ever had, I just passed by the hallway mirror and caught a glimpse of myself and saw an Oompa Loompa! Yes, I had jaundice. Went to a different doc, he said gallbladder. He couldn't understand why I hadn't been sent for an ultrasound or any tests - nope. He couldn't understand why I had an endoscopy apart from the other doc thinking perhaps it was an ulcer. Second doc sent me for an endoscopy immediately which confirmed gallstones. So I was prescribed a drug that was unnecessary without sending me for tests. Again treat symptoms but not the cause.

This gradually increased over the years and I thought it was just getting older.
However, when my legs developed severe pain down the outside along my TFL, I decided something was wrong.
I gradually stopped taking Omeprazole and miraculously, after a few months, all joint and muscle pains disappeared.

Keep a record of your food and drink including alcohol and any medication even over the counter meds such a Tylenol or other pain relievers. Lastly, a clean diet, abstaining from or at least limiting alcohol and pain meds. Exercise, fresh air and sunshine make such a difference and prayer if your inclined to do so. Good luck. Omeprazole works very well for the acid issue I've been having. Very informative. Yes reducing use in steps is very important to note because it's not usually mentioned on packaging. I stopped taking it after about 5 days due to no issues only to find myself needing relief after only 1 day not using. You absolutely must step it down. Once you are ready to skip a day, continue to take every other day for awhile then try taking every 3 days. I will say this is the best medication I have used in dealing with my acid only having to take 1 dose that fully covers my day. I have no peptic valve; eaten away by stress and acid. I would wake in the morning to acid eating away my back teeth with associated bone loss. Sleeping on an incline helped slightly. I’ve been on omeprazole 20mg as Losec now since it was invented, more than 3 decades with no apparent side effects. When I test wean off the horrible acid returns with terrible burning reflux. I’ve decided to continue with my daily dosage which I take each morning and I do supplement with magnesium and other vitamins.

I've been taking omeprazole for getting on 8 - 10 years. The benefits taking omeprazole far outweigh the side effects you describe of which I dont seem to get. I was taking ranitidine before omeprazole and would suffer with chronic heartburn, frequent indigestion generally uncomfortable. This was necessary I was told because of heart meds which included aspirin. I only had to look at a piece of garlic bread and I would looking for the McCleans tabs or Rennie. Now or since being on omeprazole I don't get any discomfort any more, can eat what I like, miracle pill. I have heard about risks being on omeprazole long term 10 years plus and have put this to my gp. He assured me that my benefits far outweigh the possible risks by not taking the tablet. Who am I to argue. I try maintain a balanced diet and on occasion go for more alkaline diet.

Dr. Sam, I am a new subscriber to your channel but what I have seen so far is highly
informative. I am one of those as my Pulmonologist describes it “that will live
long in spite of my Dr’s advice”. The reason for the comment was that I
insisted that even after a three-day stress test with media that showed my
heart to be just fine. I insisted that I needed a heart Cath done, he
reluctantly referred me to his cardiologist at a major hospital here in NY.
Well long story short they found a major artery on the front of my heart 75%
blocked and installed a stint. For the first 18 months after that I felt so
much better. I am a 74-year-old male with advanced COPD and thankfully my pulmonologist
is also my primary care physician.
I am the type of person that will only take medication that
I believe I actually need to take it. And will carefully discontinue them if I feel I
am better off without them. For instance, my first cardiologist prescribed
blood pressure meds for me and then never followed up to see if needed to continue
them. I got my own BP cuff and started regularly recording my BP and keeping a record.
Then slowly went off the BP meds when I realized that my BP was on average in
the normal range over several weeks. After going off the BP meds my BP remained in the normal range consistently.
so, when I visited my cardiologist and informed him of what I had done and showed him my records along
with all my pulse oximeter and heart rate data over that same period. He
rather sheepishly said that he dropped the ball on that one. OOOPS! WTH, that's not very professional IMHO.
So, my point is we ALL must be our own best advocate because
no one else knows our bodies the way we do.
Now as to the subject of this video. My Dr has me on Omeprazole
40mg daily for GERD symptoms. I would prefer not to take this drug if it is truly
not needed and I may try lowering the frequency gradually to see if I need
to continue it. And the same goes for the Atorvastatin I weaned myself off that
after my last quarterly pulmonologist visit that consisted of a drug review and
the normal vitals and meds as well as fasting blood. So, we will see this
next visit if I really need that drug as well.
I am on all the strongest COPD meds in combination and use
the course of antibiotics with prednisone when severe exacerbations occur. Which can
be as often as two or three times a month. Thankfully it's usually less than
once or twice every couple of months that require the use of the prednisone in conjunction
with the course of Amoxicillin. And I'm acutely aware of the potential problems associated with the prolonged use of prednisone and use it very sparingly
    .
Thank you for being so informative and your commonsense
    approach.
    Be safe and well
    P.S. I obviously suffer from wannabe writer's syndrome but I seriously doubt there's a medication for that.😉

I took it for one week and stopped. I have never felt so bad in my life. I could not eat, uncontrollable coughing, cold sweats, and more. The worse thing was that I had no energy and it took more than a month after stopping that I actually started to feel normal.

Loved the video. I've had reflux for years now and Omeprazole seems to keep it at bay. That's said, I'm concerned as to the long term effects as I'm on anticoagulants. On another note, can you offer your opinions as to the effectiveness of having to wear a face mask for stopping the spread of Covid?

Great video doc. I'm a 74 year old man, with a terrible history of bleeding stomach ulcers. About 15 years ago, after my first hospitalization, my doctor put me on omeprazole, 20mg twice a day. I've been on it ever since with no problems that I can attribute to the med. I did try to ween myself off of it some time ago with disastrous results. Your video has made me more confident in this therapy. Thanks again!

Love your relaxed presenting style and the way you explain potentially complex matters in an easy to comprehend way for the layperson to understand. I took Omeprazole 20mg for GERD for a few years but became concerned at suggestions long-term use may associated with dementia. I also started experiencing stomach cramps. Not having seen your video I just stopped taking the drug and did experience a resurgence of GERD for about a week, but the symptoms faded away and I’ve been off it for 6 months now and don’t feel the need to go back on it. Good to know I can take it occasionally again if I suffer a prolonged bout of heartburn. Your videos are excellent - thank you.
