@@may-rg7yk Avoid taking them for more than 6-8 weeks. Buy a wedge pillow and sleep on that instead of your normal pillow. Long term may be several years. It can be addictive as people become overly dependent on them .
25 year old male diagnosed with a hiatal hernia about 6 years ago. I was on ppi for years and it pretty much destroyed my digestive system through malabsorption and it caused inflammation due to causing random bouts sometimes back to back of either diarrhea or constipation. I tried getting off them one time and I burnt a hole in my esophagus but now I'm discovering how crucial your diet is to stomach acid. Eat clean and eat fiber, stay away from sugar and fried foods, have salmon, veggies and some meat once a week. Do not consume superfluous food only eat based on utility. I've been off ppi for a week or so now and my whole digestive system is out of wack but clearly returning to normal. On ppi I would use the bathroom multiple times a day...now without it and a proper diet I use the toilet once every two or three days and I pass full stool as opposed to diarrhea or skinny shards. Ppi has also caused me to have excruciating hemorrhoids due to how difficult it is to pass broken stool or diarrhea for weeks on end. As I dont overuse my bowels all day and I eat to supplement my intestinal health I have easier bowel movements that are even healing my hemmrhoids. I took ppi for a stomach hernia but I know others have actual chronic reflux that is not dependent on an anatomical problem but I urge everyone to explore their diet before giving in to a lifelong ppi subscription. It's not worth it...many anti acid medications are criminally undocumented in how they cause cascading effects in your body and I have seen three gastro doctors none of which have actually explained all the side effects and in fact downplayed them as coming from erroneous studies.
What's stopping you from getting surgery for your hernia? I have never been able to find a diet that successfully stopped my reflux and am stuck on ppis and unfortunately having issues like yours as well. Surgery seems to be my only option. I've decided to pursue the linx surgery as well.
I heard that people with these conditions really have hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid, and not too much). Taking PPIs and assuming because you have too much acid with testing for it us like shooting yourself in the foot. I started taking HCL tablets from Standard Process, and it help my digestion and reflux.
@@pinkoceanflower3045 Well if he has a hiatal hernia the sphincter is potentially impaired making it so it can't contain things from the stomach. If he really had low acid then acid reflux wouldn't be an issue.
I was diagnosed with gastritis and just given pantoprazole and sent home. I'm on omeprazole 2 months later, trying to wean off them. The doctor gave me no guidance or warning, and I feel like it's done me more harm than good. I've never had stomach aches or pains before my diagnosis, now I do.
I'm 42 and have just come off my PPI after 9 years. I'm two weeks in. Along with adjusting my diet to remove as much sugar as possible and taking one dose of magnesium indigestion liquid before bed and I've never felt better in years. I would wake up and immediately feel discomfort in my stomach on ppi. Then throughout the day I just didn't feel right and I became determined to get off them and fix the route of the problem if I could. It does annoy me though my GP would be happy to give me them indefinitely and almost all of my family and friends, especially the men, take PPI long term.
When my GP told me that I would need to stay on PPI for the rest of my life...first I got a new doctor...my new doctor, an osteopathic practitioner, told me to go on a dairy and gluten free diet. After just a few weeks on the new diet I was off the meds ! Find out WHY you have reflux before you take meds longterm ! Without acid in your stomach to extract the nutrients from your foods you will become deficient and develop all sorts of ailments.
You always have acid in your stomach, even when on a PPI and H2 antagonist. Please don't go throwing around medical advice unless you're a doctor, and then if you are please cite your sources. In this day and age there are more average to bad doctors practicing and altogether too much pseudo-medical science.
Daniel, you are absulately wrong in your view about this drug. You rely on your doctor who does not know the ABC of medicine. Just learn to shut UP for future comments.
@@danielfronc4304Thank you for your response. I've just started on a PPI and feel SO much better. Cough gone, pain from reflux gone, fear gone. Touch wood, no problems yet.
I’ve been on them for years and when I’ve tried to get off, my stomach is churning acid and I get diarrhea. Now I had a gallbladder attack last week. Thank you for all this info! If only every doctor was as informed.
@@mariannameyer4719 just started yesterday. Whenever I've missed a dose I can tell right away. I opened up the capsule and literally removed only about 10 beads. I had NO idea I wasn't supposed to take these long term and daily.
I’ve been back and forth to the doctors for stomach issues since 2009. Had my gallbladder removed. The reflux was terrible. Come to find out after many tests later, barium swallow, gastric emptying etc, I have severe GERD with LPR, and gastroparesis. Life has been utter hell. My entire life revolves around my reflux.
I had horrible issues, and I ended up getting the "Nissen Fundoplication" surgery, and hernia repair.. I have not had a single issue since.. There are a few things that you have to get used to, like being unable to vomit, burp, avoidance of certain foods... BUT, the procedure was a life saver. No more medications, pain, heartburn, reflux... I have an amazing surgeon who I still see for checkups, but no more issues!
@@GottaSayIt I wondered the same but I ve heard that The Linx can erode and cause gagging and more refluxing . Ive seen some people just keep gagging with it since theres something around their esophagus . Im not sure if I would want a foriegn object in my body unless it was really needed . Its more tempting because they can remove it and you can vomit n burp apparently . Not sure if you can have it if you have a hiatal hernia depending on the size of it .

Lifestyle change is the only way to get off PPI’s. Eliminate sugar, high fat, coffee, tea, citrus, spicy, chocolate, mints, alcohol and tobacco. Exercise, resistance and cardio 5 days a week with intermittent fasting (18-6) small meals (2 per day) lose weight (BMI near or below 25.) I was diagnosed with Barretts. Took 40 mg nexium for 15 years. Luckily, Barrett’s went away but breaking from the PPI is tricky. First go to the 20 mg OTC, for several months. Then get a pill splitter and cut the 20 tablets in half. Take 10 mg a day for several months and supplement with a 150 mg. Zantac before bed. Then take the 10 mg every other day for at least 2 months (with the nighttime Zantac.) monitor yourself along the way. You might have to stay at a level longer. Then stop the nexium, continue the Zantac. If so far so good, drop the Zantac to 75 mg at night. That’s where I am at and I will stay there. If I have a late or larger than normal dinner, I revert to the 150 Zantac for that night. One other tip. Get 4” “bed lifts” for the head of your bed (extra pillows won’t do it.) That slight elevation will help keep stomach acid from rising up as you sleep. Good luck to you. Any questions I’ll be glad to help.

Oh wow....you have literally just solved my medical mystery. I know I have allergies and I know I have GERD, but I couldn’t pinpoint what is making me completely miserable. I have recently been diagnosed with “asthma”, GERD, recurrent pneumonia, I have chronic coughing and throat clearing, chronic post nasal drip....I know I have respiratory reflux now!! Thank you sir!! Also I’m at University of KY as a nurse, so it was cool to hear of that article!
So his conclusion is to have the surgery, otherwise it won’t get fixed. That’s depressing. I had a CT scan chest for dry chronic cough and my pulmonologist said I have lung scarring, it was six month ago. I asked if it’s chronic and the doc said no idea to answer because it was my first ct and nothing to compare. Now I’m so scared when I follow up I’m six month and the scarring grow it’s called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Worse than cancer because there’s no surgery to cure and prognosis is worse than cancer. Reflux can cause that according to Dr Smith and it’s convincing
@@gina933 I have had multiple CT scans and multiple episodes of pneumonia. I think I have finally figured out my problem- I have a gluten intolerance, possible celiac (would need to have an endoscopy to know for sure). It causes all of my symptoms, when I stopped gluten I am getting better.

This video is old but is the most informative and real honesty video i have seen to date on reflux! When he said there was a link with heart arrhythmia and low magnesium due to the PPI, the penny dropped for me! I have been on the PPI between 1-2 years but have recently been diagnosed with heart arrhythmia. Couldn't understand where it came from as no history of heart problems in family. Tried operation to treat but could not treat it and have been advised that it is quite common for it to return, even after a successful surgical procedure to treat. Now I'm on 2 sets of different meds to treat the arrhythmia and may need more if the current meds not manage it? My reflux problem had slowly gotten worse to the point that it came up my throat constantly through the day, leaving a fowl green taste at back of mouth and started to change my voice and irrigate it. Hugely anxious about coming off the PPI (in case of severe rebound) and how to go about it? I've gone and seen a specialist, and have had the camera placed down throat in to my stomach. He couldn't give any explanation for my reflux problems and would only dismiss my concerns about being on PPI long term. Wish there was a specialist near me with the same professional care, honesty and understanding as the specialist in this video!
Great information! I just ran out of Rabeprazole Sodium 20 mg after being on the medication for a year. I was contemplating renewal. I will not renew and follow the advice of Dr Smith. My husband has Barrett’s Esophagus and I will be having him watch this important video. Thank you so much!
My dr prescribed this for me and even increased my dosage in the last 4 years. I recently weaned myself off. I used Oil of Oregano. Black seed oil and CABBAGE JUICE that I juice fresh. I am going great !!! My joint pain is almost completely gone ! This took me a month. 2 weeks To taper off and 2 weeks to heal the stomach and rebuild the mucus lining. I am happy I am off this
Thank Dr. Smith for explaining in detail about reflux. This has been most hopeful, as I had reflux for the last several years and only recently began taking PPI medication in the last couple of weeks, which has reduced my symptoms. I will check further in correcting reflux issues.
15 years on PPIs and I developed low B12 and elevated homocysteine that caused blood clots in my legs that traveled to my lungs twice before Covid in April 2017 and Sept 2018. On Eliquis for life now with minor permanent lung damage. Got a sluggish gallbladder removed in March 2021 that made reflux even worse, possibly due to alkaline bile reflux. Got a hiatal hernia repair and a Nissen Fundoplication May 2022. Reflux med dose cut in half. Now take B12 supplements. I also developed ostopenia low bone density at 54 due to poor calcium absorption.
Thank you for all the information. I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus Probably over 12 years ago. I was started on Nexium. Then acifex. Omeprazole. Then time released Dexalant. I’ve been on proton pump inhibitor‘s for over 12 years. I’m 63 years old and I recently within the last year fractured my L3 spine. I was in heavy construction/pipefitter. I have an endoscopy every year and my G.I. doctor says no cancerous cells. And that I’m OK. I also heard it causes kidney disease/Alzheimer’s/throat cancer. I take supplements every day. Calcium/magnesium/vitamin B/vitamin B12. I also take folic acid because I found an article online that said Ppi’s plus folic acid cure it. I seem to be tolerating the PPIs. But now after watching your video I’m scared out of my mind. Every time I see my G.I. doctor he doesn’t really fill me in on any other treatment other than a endoscopy and PPIs.
I am in the same situation. Aged 68 and diagnosed with Barretts syndrome two years ago (no sign of cancer yet) and have been on PPI 40mg twice a day. It is really a situation of being between a rock and a hard place. I wonder what optons are available...the lesser of two evils perhaps?
I was diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus 4 years ago and I’m with both of you feeling scared. I am on Protronix for 4 years. My cousin had Barrett’s and my neighbor and both haves passed from esophagus cancer!!! What do we do??? We know we’re not misdiagnosed so I have the wedge pillow but if I don’t take PPIs … I would have horrible acid reflux. Should we try to IF? My doctors say I have to stay on PPI for life, too!!!

I had been taking PPIs for about 3 years on a daily basis before I decided to go for laparoscopic fundoplication (Toupet method). The surgery was a great success and I have been off PPIs for more than 2 years now. I can luckily eat everything. At any rate, I did some tests about a week ago, and they showed that I have quite low vitamin/mineral levels (A, B, D, iron, selenium, Omega 3, magnesium, to name a few). Most of these deficiencies were attributed by the doctor to the long term use of PPIs in the past.
If you dont mind me asking, what sort of tests revealed your low levels? Reason I ask is that many things dont show as low in bloodwork but are still low in body. Thanks.
@@mikeinpcola5543 I don't mind you asking at all. In that specific instance, I was talking about a basic blood test. Furthermore, I could recommend you to consider a comprehensive stool test.
Happy that you had such success with the operation! I have just had the exact same operation done, (also the Toupet) 3 weeks ago, and I wonder, if you had any problem with reflux after the surgery? I'm currently doing a "cold turkey" from the PPI, but man do I have stomach burn 😬
@SorenTheKjeldsen Greetings, Soren! I did not encounter any traces of reflux symptoms subsequent to the surgery. During the initial span of three to four weeks, my dietary regimen predominantly comprised nourishing soups and blended vegetables. However, within the initial six months after the surgical procedure, I did encounter a particular predicament, namely flatulence. I must admit, it was a rather vexing situation at first. Nonetheless, the occurrence of flatulence began to gradually diminish and eventually fully subsided.
Alright thank you for the answer! Maybe I should just give it time though - I have been taking PPI for 8 years straight, so it will probably take some time to get completely out of the body. Enjoy the weekend 😃
Many don’t realize too how much the Mind/Body plays a role in acid issues. Like the “butterflies” in your stomach before something nerving - doesn’t mean you need medication, or an Endoscope Test. PSTD, Trauma unresolved can really mess up a body. Especially the ANS, CNS
some of the side effects of hyperacidity is also some of these things you mentioned: anxiety, feeling of doom, nervousness as it irritates the vegas nerve. THEN when you come off PPI's you can have some of these same feelings again either from the addiction to the medication or the re-acidification of your stomach which is not as strong due to missing natural lining.
I have been taking this Omeprazole for eight years. The doctor never mentioned these side effects to me until I had had enough of diarrhoea and cramps. Called the doctor who said to stop taking it immediately. Useless bunch of clowns.
I've been using PPIs for over 15 years. I found out I developed a B12 deficiency, have arrhythmia and now a leaky heart valve. Every time I express concern to my doctor about being on PPIs, he tells me that I will probably have throat cancer if I stop taking them. I've tried to wean myself from them but, almost instantly, my GERT starts back up. Looking for a way to get off this medication.

I had no plans of taking a synthetic reflux medication again. I will never take another Synthetic Statin. I can barely tolerate what Synthetic Medications I take and I have a long list that no practioners want to put in my medical records that I tried in Namebrand, their Generic and some were prescribed again in their Generics even though I tell them I cannot tolerate them. Bless you for being such a great physician 🙏
You’ve been listing my circle of specialists as if you were talking about me. So frustrating! I had the nissum fundoplication lathroscopically 20 years ago and was fine. Now huge amounts of thick mucus and froggy voice.
I've got to say that having GERD and a Hiatus Hernia for over 10 years, this Dr explained things better than any Specialist I have seen. Currently, my systems have been worse than ever, tightness and discomfort in my chest and back. Also, it is hard to swallow. My last endoscopy showed a 3 cm Sliding Hiatus Hernia (this was 2 years ago). The Linux system sounds great but I don't think the NHS in the UK offers this which is shut a shame. Has anyone else had this procedure done? If so, what are your thoughts?
The NHS is not going to be doing anything for anything from now on. I had to pay for my prostate operation because it was going to be 2 years before seeing anybody about it. The drug Tamsulosin was the cause of my GERD I have an incompetent sphincter that allows stomach acid to burn the hell out of my oesophagus, PPI for 6 weeks and see how it goes then I want to see about surgery again it needs private payment.
@@akwasiasare3456 I paid over £2000 for tests and they show no GERD but the Hiatus Hernia is there and it is trapping the Vagus nerve when I eat and then work. This causes direct pain and if I persist trying to carry, walk or lift the reaction cause vomiting I managed to pull the stomach down whilst deep breath out and it went off, but came back as soon as anything was eaten and the stomach had contents. I need the hiatus between the cru to be repaired and no linx as there is actually no acid coming up at all during the 24hr acid test. What worries me now is that they will not just do the repair without the linx as it is too cheap without having one done. The NHS will NOT do a simple repair as it is not worth doing to an older man so am expecting a bill of £10000 privately.

You aren't the first to mention that ppi's are being handed out like candy, even for people who dont need them. I was given some at the ER when i had black stool one day in case of an ulcer (rightfully so) but then I had an egd done. They found a little inflammation and the very beginning of barrett's esophagus and of course wanted me on a ppi forever. I'm a large guy. 6'3" and 346 pounds who doesn't exercise and has a poor diet and I argued that if i changed those things, wouldnt i improve my disposition? But they want to push the ppi anyway despite already having a low chance that the barrett's esophagus will progress. So why should i take something that has notable side effects (it was giving me abdominal cramps) when i can just make life changes. Anyway, rant over. :D
spot on! -Great presentation that needs to be more widely circulated and listened to - I know this video is dated 2016 - though still so *very* relevant

I've had GERD for like 3 months then my throat and chest started giving me nighmare feeling they are so tight, nausea, and frequent heat of body. i visited doctor he checked me and said( your throat is damaged from GERD) he gave me (Lansoprazole and Clathrithromycin) to treat it in 10 days, i took them for 15 days now they are finished. i feel much better BUT not totally, i still feel the symptoms. should i see my doctor again or renew my medications ?
I’ve been prescribed a PPI for 14 years! Only recently did I learn they’re for short term use. I’ve tried so many times to get off them by weaning down and every time it fails. And it was likely a weak LES from pregnancy that caused the GERD. And that’s fixable. There’s no reason for me to be on these meds. But nobody ever decided to figure out the cause of the GERD. I’m so sick from these meds. IBS, SIBO, malabsorption, iron deficiency, etc.
I am with you sane here . Actually today I read a medical journals from two doctors and these damn PPI’s actually weaken, the LES the PPI remove the acid out of your stomach. You need that acid and acid in your stomach to fight off infections and a whole host of other things. I don’t know how I’m gonna do, but I’m gonna try to wean myself off I have an endoscopic this Monday, January 15, 2024. Stay informed. Its a billion $$ dollar industry. By taking PPI long-term, you’re trading that in for IBS .
People also need to be advised that GERD can be a sign that they may have sleep apnea. Sleep apnoea creates which can pull acid up from the oesophagus into the throat…
I’m 36. Been on omeprazole for 5 yrs straight. I have lo b12 inflamed joints. Great addition to my search for information. My goal is to improve my gut health in order to get get off cholesterol and reflux drugs. I am on omeprazole for Barrett’s. My confusion is over the issue of too little stomach acid causing reflux. If that’ s so, why are antacids, PPIs etc, needed to reduce acid? I understand that there are 2 issues around acid - the PH in the gut and the corresponding leak into the esophagus due to a faulty valve. Does a a lower PH in the gut help the valve stay closed, therefore eliminating the reflux? Thanks for any clarification. BTW, I have been using ACV and lemon juice to lower PH. Not sure if that’s appropriate for my situation. Am getting an upper GI next month.
Take 1 tablespoons ofapple cider vinegar to one 16oz. Bottle of water. Tale a probiotic and dgl. Do this for a week then stop taking your ppi. Continue the above for as long as needed
This is such a great video and I wish I had seen it sooner. I am currently 24 years old and I have been on Omeprazole 40mg a day for about 6 years now and only recently realized my difficulties breathing were caused by my acid reflux after countless doctors visits and years of frustration and confusion. I even had a period where doctors thought I had asthma as well. Better eating/diet habits have helped but it seems that I would need to be extremely strict with my diet in order to not have respiratory reflux. Not to mention any sort of exercise has become extremely difficult since my reflux seems to amp up during exercise and makes it hard for me to get a full breath. Because of all this, I am looking to get surgery, hopefully TIF esophageal fundiplication to be exact. Traditional fundiplications (Nissen) involve way too much mutilation and cutting for me to be comfortable with and have higher prevelance of side effects such as bloating/inability to throw up or burp and other methods such as the linx seem more inconsistent in effectiveness and have side effects such as difficulty swallowing. It is a hard decision to make since no option is perfect but I will hopefully be getting a TIF surgery soon after I take the necessary tests. My options at this point are to keep taking Omeprazole for the rest of my life and still deal with symptoms, have an extremely limited diet in order to prevent symptoms (ideally), or get a surgery and deal with whatever possible side effects they might cause if any and hopefully no longer have symptoms and no longer take PPIS. I am ready for this chapter of my life to be over.
Oooh wow! Sorry to hear you will be on PPI for the rest of your life. Be careful of getting brittle bones. Wish you were living next to me, we could eat healthier and exercise together.

I was just prescribed this medicine by a gastroenterologist. She wants me to take 20 mgs. for the rest of my life due to finding my biopsy indicated Barratt's Esophagus (non-dysplasia). I don't have any serious 'gerd' problems but came up positive for an at home color-guard test and have another colonoscopy/endoscopy scheduled for 5/21/24. I don't think I want to take Omeprazole for the rest of my life. What are the risks if I don't take it?

How would you suggest weaning a 6 month old off of a PPI with silent reflux? Currently is dairy free and egg free due to allergies..would I just decrease amount over time? He’s sick every two weeks and I had a feeling it was due to the meds.
25 years I have been on them, they turn off stomach acid, then stomach makes more acid cells. If you try and stop you get double acid in stomach which is agony.

A doctor who speaks TRUTH!
How long did you take them for? Is 2 weeks enough to have this happen?

Hi I wanted to ask what are u taking for ur pain?? I can share some info about it
The most truthful, informative words I've ever heard coming out of a human beings mouth.
I am considering this surgery. But if you can’t vomit, what would happen if you got the flu or food poisoning?
@@GottaSayIt I wondered the same but I ve heard that The Linx can erode and cause gagging and more refluxing . Ive seen some people just keep gagging with it since theres something around their esophagus . Im not sure if I would want a foriegn object in my body unless it was really needed . Its more tempting because they can remove it and you can vomit n burp apparently . Not sure if you can have it if you have a hiatal hernia depending on the size of it .
How many years passed since ur fundoplication?

I have been taking Omeprozole and other PPi`s for 20 years also. I have stopped and am taking Zantac 150 mg per day.
You need to GET OFF of them immediately...

Now I’m so scared when I follow up I’m six month and the scarring grow it’s called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Worse than cancer because there’s no surgery to cure and prognosis is worse than cancer. Reflux can cause that according to Dr Smith and it’s convincing

Excellent video and very informative.

I managed to pull the stomach down whilst deep breath out and it went off, but came back as soon as anything was eaten and the stomach had contents. I need the hiatus between the cru to be repaired and no linx as there is actually no acid coming up at all during the 24hr acid test. What worries me now is that they will not just do the repair without the linx as it is too cheap without having one done. The ulcer I was diagnosed with ( by GP partner) apparently is indigestion. I have not healed in 8 months but I have made improvements. I am chronically stressed. I told him it felt like a hole an now feels like a lump. I had H-pylori..They treat for 1 week and do not retest in the UK
You just described my experience with sinus issues, reflux and the runaround I've experienced.
I had lots of issues and side effects with PPI in the first 6 months, it made my digestive system and heartburn worse, i even got a c-diff infection... I had Nissen Fundopilcation on 3/5/21 and I am very happy with the results
If see a good Naturopathic Doctor.
@@pinkoceanflower3045 agree mate I am going for naturopath approach for this life taking disease .
@@pinkoceanflower3045 I went to one and didnt get better . They do the same thing but precribe a shit load of supplements . They take your money .
I have been taking PPL since 2013 and now' I am suffering from high blood pressure. I take b12 and D3 as oral supplimentary. I am good now. My doctor has told me to take pantoprazole livosulpride for life time. I am now 41 years old.
Wonderful video with great information. I think I can finally convince my husband to deal with his GERD.
Did 4 weeks and they made me feel much worse , gradually came off them. Changed my diet, lost weight ... feeling much better.

How are you now
Did you have dizziness too
I had horrific joint and muscle pain after 5 years with no warning from my doctor about side effects.
I quite one year ago, now back to normal and I am so glad . I feared I would be in a wheelchair it was so bad.
Did you had acid rebound after stopinj?
@@nikosulenta6973 some, but it gradually declined. It sometimes flares up after certain foods, but I'm not guzzling this poison everyday anymore.
That's the trick they tell you to take it and it's perfectly safe. It isn't. I think using it short-term is okay. Just don't keep taking it everyday.
@@Fendermanpaul i am 4 months off them but i still get reflux almost every. I was on them for a year. My doctor prescribed them but my GI specialist thinks i should get off them becuse i had minimal gerd in the first place. But my reflux is now much stronger then it was before i stared taking them. I hope that i can ever get back to normal. Do you think you can damage ability to produce normal acid for ever?
@@nikosulenta6973 don't suddenly stop them. I weaned off over 8 months. Very gradually.
Now I just take one 10mg. IF I need. You will get reflux etc. But you won't stop making acid. It takes time to repair and adjust.
Don't eat big meals, don't drink certain alcoholic drinks, I can't take beer. Just be sensible. Keep fit if you can. It'll improve over time.
We should all learn not to trust pill bottles and potions. Everything has a price, eventually.
@@Fendermanpaul I hoping this don’t happen to me because I just got them for 8 weeks because I have low vitamin d and taking vitamin d capsules
I believe it I’ve been on it for over a decade ! Took me months to completely get off it !
I took Omeprazole for 7 yrs. doctors gave it out like candy I do noticed now I had a hard time functioning and remembering things. I wish I knew this yrs ago
Sounds like my life except I’m not getting checked properly and just being told to take a bunch of medication that’s not helping.
Raising the head of my bed 8 inches so that I sleep with my head above my stomach helped my nighttime GERD.
I've been on these for nearly thirty years, is that considered long term😳 My doctors are crap....
Yes, that is most definitely considered long term. I've been on them for 13 years myself and I have started having a lot of bone issues. I also have high blood pressure and I'm only in my 20s. I am getting off of Omeprazole one way or another.
@@thetruth4580 I don't blame you....I've managed to cut down considerably and only take them now and then when I get reflux...I have a hiatus hernia which isn't helpful with the acid but I must say I thought I'd have acid problems but I don't....I'm thinking now that maybe I needn't have bern on them all these years...
So informative! I am currently suffering from SIBO, antral gastritis & a hiatal hernia.. I am trying to have my GI doc treat my hernia & all he does is order PPIs!!! Smh
Will try H2 before ppi if I can
Wish i could find a doc to help me. Been in ppis for 15 years.
PPI prescribed to keep acid down so ulcers can heal - was hoping this could be avoided and use cabbage aloe vera juice instead. Thoughts?
Yes it works celery cabbage juice or just eat them
Glad I see these I'm only 16 years old and I've been taking PPI for 3 days now
You aren't the first to mention that ppi's are being handed out like candy, even for people who dont need them.
thank you, you are very helpful and what you talk about resonates with me
Did u get a reply?
Samareh Boag no
spot on! -Great presentation that needs to be more widely circulated and listened to - I know this video is dated 2016 - though still so *very* relevant
was prescribed esomep for 30 days and still thinking about buying it
Thank you. What about the reversal of the Earth's Magnetic poles we're probably undergoing?
After an endoscopy I was diagnosed with Barrett’s but it was minor at this point I was put on ppi somac I’ve been on them 2 years doctors just tell me to keep taking it 40 mg per day how do I prevent Barrett’s worsening if I don’t take this medication
I've been on Omeprazole for almost 20 years now. :| I am determined to get off them now though!
I am right there with been on the for about 25 years
I've had GERD for like 3 months then my throat and chest started giving me nighmare feeling they are so tight, nausea, and frequent heat of body. i visited doctor he checked me and said( your throat is damaged from GERD) he gave me (Lansoprazole and Clathrithromycin) to treat it in 10 days, i took them for 15 days now they are finished. i feel much better BUT not totally, i still feel the symptoms. should i see my doctor again or renew my medications ?
Check out Dr John Bergman's RUclips channel.
Isn't it amazing how they have no side effects when they come out? Thanks
People also need to be advised that GERD can be a sign that they may have sleep apnea. Sleep apnoea creates which can pull acid up from the oesophagus into the throat…
I’m 36. Been on omeprazole for 5 yrs straight. I have lo b12 inflamed joints. Did a full body scan for Stanford pet/mri, they said I have arthritis and think I have fibromyalgia there seriously needs to be a fucking law suit. This should has ruined my life! I use to work 14 hr days never felt pain. Active my whole life
How can I see this Dr
I have GI problems
This was great! Could you do a video on functional dispepcia epigastric pain syndrome?
So knowledgeable. Great stuff. Definitely going to go to the doctor and get seen for this.
you can't get an mri with the links, and i heard they can slip.
I love this guy. Someone that finally makes sense...
Also, ginger and kiwi...all natural
I'm wondering the same thing...
Coxe Property Management and Leasing What is dgl?
@@lasetlivingstin7752 No the lower acid just burns you less, the acid still goes up on PPIs you just dont feel it.
Natural is better imo. I'm on a strict diet too.
Oooh wow! Sorry to hear you will be on PPI for the rest of your life. Be careful of getting brittle bones. Wish you were living next to me, we could eat healthier and exercise together.
Are you still suffering badly from GERD?
@@StacyBrown2 Unfortunately yes, its actually gotten worse in the past month and ive been taking even more Omeprazole. My plan was to move forward with surgery but i got side tracked. I need to learn more and take action.
@@oOTheMastaOo240 I'm also on pantoprazole 40 mg in a day since last two years....and I also want to get off from it 😪
thanks dr smith
I was just prescribed this medicine by a gastroenterologist. She wants me to take 20 mgs. for the rest of my life due to finding my biopsy indicated Barratt's Esophagus (non-dysplasia). I don't have any serious 'gerd' problems but came up positive for an at home color-guard test and have another colonoscopy/endoscopy scheduled for 5/21/24. I don't think I want to take Omeprazole for the rest of my life. What are the risks if I don't take it?
Thank you so much ..excellent explanation
thanks for sharing your knowledge
Ive been on a PPI for 17 years with a chronic condition as the result.. only now are they looking at the PPI as the origin of that chronic problem.
I’m struggling with lpr coughing all day my doctor won’t listen telling me to get of thee internet 😡 any advice it’s been bad the last 8months chronic cough can’t get air in as you say . Doctor sent me to ent they said acid in throat and all my doctor wants to do is give me ppi s I said what if I’m low on stomach acid he said no it’s to much acid o said I have more lpr he said what’s that 🙄
I’ve changed my diet to more alkaline .
Super informative video by a professional. Thank you for good clinical information. Never heard of the magnets, but RFA is picking up in many practices in different uses, cardiology, orthopedics, etc. Any thoughts on the new IBS SMART test developed at Cedars-Sinai in LA? Food is Medicine!
Yay a doctor that tells the truth!!!👏👏👏
