- James Kottak (born December 26, 1962, Louisville, Kentucky) is an American drummer for the heavy metal band Scorpions, which he joined in 1996.
Prior to joining Scorpions, Kottak was a drummer for Nut House, Mister Charlie, Buster Brown, Montrose, Kingdom Come, Wild Horses, the McAuley Schenker Group, Warrant, and Ashba.

Again RIP. I remember seeing him play back in the late 80s. Can’t remember the band. They opened for the Scorpions. He was the only good thing in that band. Great groove. Sad that ultimately his demons played a part in his death. Nice guy as well.

When James auditioned for Kingdom Come, Lenny Wolfe said that unless John Bonham walks in the room, you've got the gig. James and the band took a lot of flack. Critics were saying they were a Zeppelin rip off. Check out their tune Get It On. James does a little solo at the end too! Always one of my favorite drummers. Love him to death.

James Kottak was a phenomenal drummer...and solid singer/songwriter too. Check out his album Krunk "Greatest Hits." Cool 90's record from him.

Man I seen Kingdom Come live in 1988 in Memphis TN, and they absolutely blew away a couple other bands who played and more established at the time. Kingdom Come opened the show actually, and sounded as if it was in the studio.
Also I might add the drummer hails from my home state too, Kentucky.

Well I don't know who you are and let's keep it that way...but yes I am friends with James AND Athena oh yeah and Matthias Jabs. As I sit here smiling with satisfaction that yes actually I do know them all, you can go onto Facebook or Twitter and ask. But he won't answer cuz there is nothing that he hates more but bullshit drama. But seriously try it. Oh and I help admin one of the largest Scorpions pages on Facebook, of which James is on and was part of our drummer contest and sent the winner a great prize package and we PM back and forth and I have been friends with Matthias for 8 years and the crazy stickman for that long too when I met them in Vegas 2007; Go onto the Greek Fan Club on FB, the French fan club, the Brazil fan club, etc and they know me and they know I know these guys.
