Back in summer of 2010 I was 400 miles away from home, back in my childhood home town. My dad had died in 2008 and mom in winter 2010. I was emptying the house to get it sold, spending my Summer holiday having to go through all their stuff and all my memories, trying to make up what to save and what to let go for good. It was a three story house and it took me a week to be done. In the otherwise empty livingroom I kept the TV and soundsystem intact, so I could kick back in the evenings for a bit. Close by was a record store where I found London Calling Blu-ray disc and got it for my last evening in the house. I was pretty sure nothing could get my out of the mental rut I had buried myself into during that week, but lo and behold - round about the end of this song I smiled for the first time in what must have been weeks. This gig helped me forget where I was for a moment, but now it helps me to remember. And all of these songs... well they’re here for us forever, right?

I remember buying the DVD of the concert and seeing that Johnny 99 is on the setlist. Knowing the song only from "Nebraska" I figured it would be a little acoustic number as in the original version.
Then they started playing THIS VERSION and I nearly fell off my couch when I recognized the lyrics. A minute later I was dancing wildly :-)
The background singers doing the train sound is SO fantastic, and the false ending followed by the re-start with Bruce pointing at the viewer ("Who? ME? Alright, Boss!") and inviting the viewer onto the stage may well be the best thing I've ever seen in a live music video.
To this day I love this version of the song like few other, and I'm happy that maybe some people who hadn't known it can now discover the greatness of Johnny 99 live in Hyde Park.
