  • Over 10 inches of rainfall caused life-threatening flash flooding in New Orleans after a #tornado tore through Slidell, Louisiana, damaging the police station where we rode our Hurricane Katrina against our will. Tornadoes also were confirmed near New Roads, LA and in Mobile County, Alabama. The flash flood emergency swamped numerous vehicles around New Orleans. Here is the coverage from veteran storm chasers

      It does seem super dumb but the thing is & I’m a New Orleanian, you don’t know how quickly it can flood. Some areas are completely devoid of water & some areas become a lake.
      Also because it rains here SOOOO often & your Boss typically lives in a “high ground area” (non-flood zones) & made it to work, they somehow expect that YOU TOO live where & how THEY LIVE & expect your ass to make it to work.
      I work at a fancy hotel in the French Quarter. The French Quarter is THE PEARL of New Orleans, it’s heavily protected. As raggedy as the physical streets there are, and amazingly for that historic area being our “gem” they’re embarrassingly atrocious but the French Quarter, WILL NOT FLOOD, all of New Orleans could/would/will be allowed to flood if “need be” but the French Quarter will never flood.
      I was scheduled for a food & wine tasting at 10 am. I did not make it in. I already ruined my car in 2008 going TO WORK at a Marriott in the Warehouse District, turns out that if you drive through high water your car might just shoot a piston straight through your engine . I may or may not find myself written up in the next coming days for not having shown up for that tasting.

    Born and raised in New Orleans and still have family there. I don’t know why people still want to live in a city where they constantly have to replace things from disasters. This is just about every year down there with heavy flooding from rain.

    • @redlipstickmafia
      @redlipstickmafia 22 часа назад +1

      Because my family has lived here for over 100 years, my 90 year old parents live here, my grown kids, my grandchildren, etc. I'm a musician and my work is here. It's a culturally beautiful and significant city. Many cities have geographical difficulties and extreme weather issues, from being on earthquake faults like Los Angeles and San Francisco to being on tornado alley like the states of Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, etc. Much of the gulf coast gets flooding from time to time, in addition to the entire state of Florida, and some Atlantic coast cities as well, like Manhattan. What we need is a national investment into infrastructure that can accommodate weather issues in cities - like many European countries do - the Netherlands has an amazing system to protect against flooding. But the US spends all of our TAX DOLLARS on UNNECESSARY WARS OF EMPIRE.

    This is the route I take home from work everyday. Fortunately I was able to work from home yesterday. Unfortunately for these folks, the interstate lets out nearby and the exit was not closed in time to stop people from coming down this road and they got stuck as the water rose around them. The water was coming so fast that the drainage system couldn't keep up.

    I texted my daughter in law, thankfully she was working at home in Pearl River where the tornado went through then hit Slidell. New Orleans is literally a bowl, they cannot sustain water rising quickly. Those same issues every time!! One would think The Core of Engineering could come up with solutions by now. We visit every June, yiu can still see the affects of Hurricane Katrina.

      pennybenton5607 the Army Corps of Engineers does nothing. They just collect a bunch of money to over pay undeserving people to do nothing.
      The ACofE collects millions of dollars a year to fix the pollution problems of Lake O in Florida. Only those problems never get resolved. They just continue to collect more and more money yet the Caloosahatchee River is a toxic mess and people still eat the toxic blue crabs the remover from that glorified canal(I hope you are not a seafood lover those crabs are not safe to eat.too many chemicals. Brought to you by the wonderful people of DISNEY.😮😮😮. YEAH THEY BUILTT IN A WATER PURIFYING SWAMP, NOW ALL THE TOXIC MESS STARTS THERE AND CONTINUALLY GETS WORSE DOWNSTREAM.
      And here you are begging to give AC of E billions more in money every year.
      Do you know where money comes from?

    • @redlipstickmafia
      @redlipstickmafia 22 часа назад

      This isn't about the levees, it's about the Sewerage and Water Board pumps that need to empty flood water out. They don't work fast enough and it always seems like some of the pumps aren't working. As for the levees, there's a great book about what happened with the levees concerning Katrina - it's called "Words Whispered in Water: Why the Levees Broke in Hurricane Katrina," by Sandy Rosenthal. I have no idea if the levees are up to snuff now, but I'm thinking probably not. I lost everything in Katrina, 12 feet of water.
