This is the great Eb major Prelude and Fugue - known in England as the 'St Anne' because of the resemblance of the fugue subject (15':51") to the hymn tune of that name. Latry is one superb Bach player, articulation, pedalwork and musicianship to die for!

I think this is a very fine reading of this incredible piece. The prelude as he plays it is muscular and full of robust energy. Dazzling! Then his entry into the fugue is quite magisterial, and then the power and energy re-enters and it just leaves the earth!
It's a very honest reading, to my mind, and has great musical integrity. Oh and this organ: I'm instantly compelled by the power and clarity of the sound. My thanks to the recording engineer, as well as Mr. Latry and of course the ever amazing JSB.

The mark of a musician who truly understands the soul of the pipe organ is one who understands how to work with the resonance of his space....too many organists keep playing at a pace unmatched to the resonance of the hall... The fading echo and silence are every bit a part of the performance as the bright fanfare...Without the silence, the fanfare becomes just noise !

    • @geuros
      @geuros 9 лет назад +6

+JOHN WEBSSTER no offence, Notre-Dame organ may be large, but that's when the list of good things about the organ ends. The organ is so devalved by many reconstructions and addittions and etc. that it has almost nothing common with the original Cavaillé-Coll. For instance, try to compare Notre-Dame organ and the organ of St. Sulpice. St. Sulpice is of similar size, but sounds technically like it sounded 150 years ago when Cavaillé-Coll finished it. And sounds great, unlike the grand orgue of Notre-Dame... It's a bit sad, but it's true

Ezt a prelúdiumot és fúgát Bach
    a Szentháromság tiszteletére komponálta.
    Szerkesztésében megmutatkozik
    a hármas tagoltság.
    Háromtémás fúgáját pedig,
    kifejezetten Szentháromság-fúgának is nevezik,
    mert három teljesen különböző fúga
    gyönyörűen szerkesztett harmóniája
    emeli fel a hallgató lelkét
    a Szentháromság dicsőítésének magaslatára.
Az Atyának, a Fiúnak és a Szentléleknek,
    - a Szentháromságnak, - fúgatémái,
    a mű végén,
    egybeolvadva zengi és hirdeti
    Isten dicsőítését.
    Az egyik legtökéletesebb előadás!!

A consummate master of the instrument who plays with uncommon elegance and great taste in registration, but his heart seems cold to me. M. Latry marches through this magnificent edifice of musical architecture the way Sherman must have marched through Georgia. I much prefer a more spacious, highly inflected interpretation with evidence of breathing between the phrases and greater awareness of the dramatic shifts in mood and character that appear with each definable section. The startlingly brisk pace of the third fugue may be a stunning exhibition of virtuosity, but it robs the piece of the awe-inspiring grandeur implicit in the music evoked so wonderfully by André Marchal and his great pupil Peter Hurford. This performance, Alas! is less about Bach than it is about the admirable M. Latry. A great performance of this great of all organ works, even so.
