Wow, how time flies. Six years already since you live on the island! I remember watching your first video packing up in SA to move to Mauritius which did not feel too long ago. Take care you and your family.
First of all I hope you and your family are ok during the passage of Bilal. I was however wondering whether you could document this event and maybe let us know which area s of the island are least affected. Also what type of building structure seems to be mostly unaffected by this whether. I’m particularly interested to know these kind of things as I ‘m planning to move to Mauritius myself and in the region where I live there are no storms at all. I will pass by Mauritius myself during the first half of februari to investigate the island.
As ever a very informative VLOG, thanks so much! It would be great if someone could load a VLOG covering what hotels do when they are full of guests, that would help visitors….
thanks so much for in-time information so that I have some basic idea[even though I'm not there at present] of what it might be like when cyclones hit in Mauritius island.
I was in Mauritius during Cyclone Freddy... I booked into an apartment down in La Gaulette for Sunday thru to Wednesday (the cyclone hit Mauritius on the Monday). La Gaulette is in the South West and was well protected by the mountains of the Black River Gorges. It included a very short power failure. Tuesday, it was business as usual. In the following days, all round the Island, there was plenty of evidence that we had endured a bit of a blow. Who would have known that Freddy would have eventually become a record breaking cyclone, causing major loss of life throughout Mozambique and Malawi?
Very good info. From my personal experience a cyclone type 1, 2, or 3, is really not a big deal. Just a lot of clean up afterward. A class 4 is a different story. Out of curiosity, since most cyclones in Mauritius tend to hit east to west, have you noticed a difference in the damages on the east coast versus the west coast?
Thanks for the comment. Rainy days depends on the season. It’s September now and it has barely rained in weeks. January and February one would expect a bit of rain most days.
Sounds just like caribbean.... I avoid the months of july all the way to october when i visit caribbean because of hurricane season and tropical storms. Dominican Republic, puerto Rico and The Bahamas got hit quite badly last year by a hurricane.
Do u no how many volcanoes including inactive ones are in Mauritius? What about the minimum distance away from the sea you can live to avoid a cyclone?
Apparently there are over 20! Do google it (lots of info online). As the island is so small, when there’s a cyclone, most of the island (if not all) is affected.
Thanks Lucy - a lot of info in there which I think will be of use to those thinking of visiting or moving to Mauritius. I hope you and your family are safe and well. On the subject of electrical supply how stable is it and how long on average are the interruptions? Not necessarily during the cyclone season but in general?
Thanks for your comment. Sometimes there are interruptions for a day or so for maintenance. During cyclones, we once had 4 days of running a generator. Generally the supply is good here.
@@LucyLeheilleix That's actually better than my recent experiences in the UK. Had no power for 6 days after a storm and generally get several cuts of a minute or so a year.
hi , i am planning to go in january to Le Morne Mauritius , but i suppose its not a good idea for the cyclones and rain ! i am looking for sunny days can you help me with this , Lucy ? thanks Sergio
You are very charismatic and your way of presenting information is very disposing. Thank you for a lot of interesting and relevant information about Mauritius, I am very happy to have found your channel! I hope that soon I will be able to use your advice and experience in person :)
Good introduction of what to expect weather-wise in Mauritius. However , such an event isn't that bad as portrayed, it can be interesting. From a Mauritian in London . Thanks Lucy.
I used to stay in Réduit, Moka back in 2010. I can say that Mauritius is truely beautiful. Cyclones sweep the island and make the climate very fresh and healthy.
The worst thing about this time of year is how terribly the government deals with it. Mauritians are some of the most unlikable and difficult to deal with people I have ever dealt with
I had and continue to have the opposite experience. Maybe the world is as you see it. Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change.
I remembered 25 yrs ago when i was in Maurtius we Never had flood like that because there was a lots of space drains to water to go but Now they blocking every drains by building new tracks for trams and other stuff too. They're just Not developing But Destroying that Beautiful Paradise island of Mauritius. They keep cutting all fruits tree just to build buildings & houses they're not planting nothing the way they used too .peoples cannot live only in an island full of buildings But they Need food Too that what mordern peoples dont understand.♥️🇺🇸🦅🇲🇺🦤
Thank you so much, dear Lucy! I adore your crystal clear English. It’s a real pleasure to watch your channel! 👍🏻
Thanks so much!

Excellent video Lucy, you really do cover the whole process for cyclones well.
Thanks so much Richard. Much appreciated!
Well summarised.... love the way you've done this
Thanks very much. It’s an interesting time of the year 😜
Great video and info Lucy. Really well put together. Take care and best wishes.

Yeah Freddy has been crazy. So much destruction.

Thanks for your real-life practical preparation cyclone advice. So how many rainy days a month on average in Mauritius?

There for 8weeksmid oct to mid Dec, Only I day with slight drizzle. I must have been very lucky eh
There actually was a drought then. Lucky you had great weather.

Im going to visit Mauritius next week, do you think there will be even a few sunny days? Thanks for your videos and greetings from Germany 🇩🇪👍🏻
Here’s hoping 😀
I am looking forward to experience a cyclone one day.
It can be quite unsettling! It all really depends on the intensity.
@@LucyLeheilleix I believe you.
I’m arriving on Wednesday! What’s the chances I’ll find some sun? 😂
It's very hot and sunny on the coast, lots of rain inland past 24 hours..
hi , i am planning to go in january to Le Morne Mauritius , but i suppose its not a good idea for the cyclones and rain ! i am looking for sunny days can you help me with this , Lucy ? thanks Sergio
Hi Sergio. It’s an island so the weather changes a lot. I prefer April, but if you want heat and humidity, then come in summer 😎

We just get tornadoes. Oh yeah 9 degrees to Fahrenheit to 115. Weather ok.

Avoid the coconut palms during a storm.
Whats the longest power outage?
Actually had one yesterday for 3 hours. If hard hit by a cyclone, it can be for a day or more. It depends on the severity.
@@LucyLeheilleix have u considered getting solar and a inverter so even if power goes urs wont?
