Do you remember we heard of Lady Lyanna Mormont from Stannis? When he asks Jon “do you know this wretched child?” And gives him the scroll that Lady Lyanna wrote “we know no king but the King in the North whose name is Stark” ❤️ Lady Lyanna is the BEST lol

    • @thedeejaeebee5babee
      @thedeejaeebee5babee 6 лет назад +8

I remember that moment!! Seemed like almost a throwaway but GoT is known for not throwing anything away, and I reacted a lot like Stannis - "dam, who TF said that?" It really stood out as some straight up G level defiance! Love how when Jon was about to "remind" her what the note said, she interrupted with, "I know what it said!" You KNOW she personally dictated that reply, and her advisors were like, "Dam straight, my lady."

    • @SelvesteSand
      @SelvesteSand 5 лет назад +10

@@thedeejaeebee5babee She didn't dictate it; she wrote it. Google the letter. Look at the uneven lines, the differently sized letters. The capital N in North is large enough, but is shaped like a small n, the rk in Stark are as big as capital letters. The g in King is of a fancy shape but not very gracefully drawn. Stark is embolded, and most notably, the comma is huge. That's a child's handwriting. And she even forgot to write a signature. If she had been dictating, the writer would have signed it formally in her name. Everything points to her having written it personally. :D

Tormund is a great example of GRRM's famous saying: "A villain is the hero of the other side." If true, the opposite is as well. For the Freefolk, Jon Snuuh, LC Mormont, Samwell, Edd, etc. = villains. Jorah once viewed Viserys & Daenerys as villains-in-training & King Robert as the hero. Jaime embodies this totally: his most heroic act labeled him a villain forever. GRRM was deeply ambivalent about Vietnam; his profound anti-war stance & the absurdity of who we consider a "hero" vs. "villain" colors all his works.
"Violence is a disease. You don't cure it by spreading it to more people."

    • @iloveyourunclebob
      @iloveyourunclebob 6 лет назад +10

Doesn't she say "I killed him", gets smacked, and keeps going because she knows it's a lie? When she says she hated him and gets smacked is when she fights it and says "it's not a lie, I hated him" and gets smacked again. Somewhere in there is when she also says "I'm glad he's dead" and gets another snack, furthering the proof that she's lying to herself about hating him. It ends with her saying "I'm not playing your stupid game anymore!" So, when she gets hit for saying that she kills him she does not argue about it because she knows it's a lie and knows she trying to lie. She fights getting smacked with the "I hated him" part because that was the lie she wanted to believe. That is the lie that really upsets her and keeps getting her smacked for. She does get hit for saying that she killed him, but that's not what she keeps getting smacked over, not what she's upset about, and not really relevant. The entire point of that scene was that she no longer hated the Hound, no matter how much she wants to. She finally accepts it and we see her demeanor change from the last time he's mentioned to when the waif says "tell me about the Hound" the next time she plays the game.
She's actually trying to play the game. When she says she killed the Hound, she is playing the game. Poorly, but playing. She knows she's lying, we know she's lying, Jaqen knows she's lying. She is attempting to play the game and get away with the lie. When she says she hated him, she's really just lying to herself and thinks it's the truth. They used Jaqen catching her on the killing him lie to show us, as an audience, Jaqen knows when she's telling the truth or not. When she gets smacked the next time, for saying that she hated the Hound, we know it's really a lie. That's literally the only reason that line is even in there. It is a way for writers to point you in the direction they want you to look without blatantly spelling it out for you.

Just for the backstory : The scene between Jaime Lannister and the Blackfish is kind of heartbreaking. When he was a kid, Jaime was a big fan of the Blackfish; following him everywhere. The Blackfish was a badass warrior. Jaime wanted to be like him. So, here we are, decades later, with the Blackfish saying "I wanted to get the measure of you (...) and I'm disappointed". It's terrible for Jaime.

I got that feeling from the acting in the scene, and I've never read the books and had no idea about the backstory. He seemed like his opinion was important to him, maybe, with his success and effort thus far he was trying to impress him, seeking a form of approval he never got the chance to get from Tywin.

Knowing this adds a bit more to Jaime's reaction when he asks that soldier to bring him the Blackfish, only to hear that he died fighting.
He's noticeably saddened, and learning that there's admiration there that goes so far back makes it more impactful.

I understand House Glover’s response to Jon & Sansa. It sucks, but I can understand how they feel from their POV.
I think this episodes title applies to several men/ppl in this episode, but I also think it applies to Rob & his legacy. Listening to the guy from House Glover speak about Rob & House Stark just shows how that one decision broke Rob’s connection with the north, not just the Frey’s. And right now, House Stark is broken. I hate that that is how Rob will be remembered and that most people in the north view House Stark as ‘dead’.
It made me feel sad for Jon & Sansa, for them to hear how ppl feel about/remember their brother and House Stark.

I liked Rob, but he was foolish to go back on his word and honor for a woman he barely met. His whole country was riding on his decisions, and he threw it all away. It seems to me that there is a lot of karma that goes on in this show with terms to honor. I personally think the Stark's string of bad luck started when Ned beheaded the guy in the beginning without a second's thought. To bad he didn't give that man a change like he did with Cersei.

This is why Stannis made his tempting offer basically, he needed a Stark to rally northern houses to his cause.

Episode titled "The Broken Man"? Have to post the "Broken Man" speech from the books, one of the best speeches ever, which isn't in the show. No plot spoilers (except for the speech). The character giving the speech is not in the show, but there are parallels between him and brother Ray (who is not in the books).
"Ser? My lady?" said Podrick. "Is a broken man an outlaw?"
    "More or less," Brienne answered.
Septon Meribald disagreed. "More less than more. There are many sorts of outlaws, just as there are many sorts of birds. A sandpiper and a sea eagle both have wings, but they are not the same. The singers love to sing of good men forced to go outside the law to fight some wicked lord, but most outlaws are more like this ravening Hound than they are the lightning lord. They are evil men, driven by greed, soured by malice, despising the gods and caring only for themselves. Broken men are more deserving of our pity, though they may be just as dangerous. Almost all are common-born, simple folk who had never been more than a mile from the house where they were born until the day some lord came round to take them off to war. Poorly shod and poorly clad, they march away beneath his banners, ofttimes with no better arms than a sickle or a sharpened hoe, or a maul they made themselves by lashing a stone to a stick with strips of hide. Brothers march with brothers, sons with fathers, friends with friends. They've heard the songs and stories, so they go off with eager hearts, dreaming of the wonders they will see, of the wealth and glory they will win. War seems a fine adventure, the greatest most of them will ever know.
"Then they get a taste of battle.
"For some, that one taste is enough to break them. Others go on for years, until they lose count of all the battles they have fought in, but even a man who has survived a hundred fights can break in his hundred-and-first. Brothers watch their brothers die, fathers lose their sons, friends see their friends trying to hold their entrails in after they've been gutted by an axe.
"They see the lord who led them there cut down, and some other lord shouts that they are his now. They take a wound, and when that's still half-healed they take another. There is never enough to eat, their shoes fall to pieces from the marching, their clothes are torn and rotting, and half of them are shitting in their breeches from drinking bad water.
"If they want new boots or a warmer cloak or maybe a rusted iron halfhelm, they need to take them from a corpse, and before long they are stealing from the living too, from the smallfolk whose lands they're fighting in, men very like the men they used to be. They slaughter their sheep and steal their chickens, and from there it's just a short step to carrying off their daughters too. And one day they look around and realize all their friends and kin are gone, that they are fighting beside strangers beneath a banner that they hardly recognize. They don't know where they are or how to get back home and the lord they're fighting for does not know their names, yet here he comes, shouting for them to form up, to make a line with their spears and scythes and sharpened hoes, to stand their ground. And the knights come down on them, faceless men clad all in steel, and the iron thunder of their charge seems to fill the world . . .
    "And the man breaks.
"He turns and runs, or crawls off afterward over the corpses of the slain, or steals away in the black of night, and he finds someplace to hide. All thought of home is gone by then, and kings and lords and gods mean less to him than a haunch of spoiled meat that will let him live another day, or a skin of bad wine that might drown his fear for a few hours. The broken man lives from day to day, from meal to meal, more beast than man. Lady Brienne is not wrong. In times like these, the traveler must beware of broken men, and fear them . . . but he should pity them as well."
When Meribald was finished a profound silence fell upon their little band. Brienne could hear the wind rustling through a clump of pussywillows, and farther off the faint cry of a loon. She could hear Dog panting softly as he loped along beside the septon and his donkey, tongue lolling from his mouth. The quiet stretched and stretched, until finally she said, "How old were you when they marched you off to war?"
"Why, no older than your boy," Meribald replied. "Too young for such, in truth, but my brothers were all going, and I would not be left behind. Willam said I could be his squire, though Will was no knight, only a potboy armed with a kitchen knife he'd stolen from the inn. He died upon the Stepstones, and never struck a blow. It was fever did for him, and for my brother Robin. Owen died from a mace that split his head apart, and his friend Jon Pox was hanged for rape."
"The War of the Ninepenny Kings?" asked Hyle Hunt.
"So they called it, though I never saw a king, nor earned a penny. It was a war, though. That it was."

I've always wondered if the actress was a test for Arya or if the test was really for the waif. Arya didn't do what she was told, but neither did the waif in this scene. Jaqen asked Arya if death only came for the wicked? However, he also told her the history of the Faceless Men. The first was a slave called no one and they started as vengeance against their slave owners. Seemingly, only killing the wicked or slaves that ASKED for death. The people that come to the house of black and white ASK for death (or their guardian does). So, who is really being tested here? Is it Arya and whether or not she'll go through with killing someone she doesn't see as wicked? Is it the waif? Is she really committed to the faceless men or will she just kill Arya, without question and the way she feels like doing it, because she's told to? Is it a test for both of them at the same time? I want answers.

I totally agree. I always thought the waif seemed too blood-thirsty and sociopathic to be what the Faceless Men are supposed to be. They don't torture their victims. They seem to kill quickly and cleanly. They don't enjoy it. It is simply their duty to the Many-faced God.

I'm like, but that's literally not what you just explained with the start of the faceless men. Like I get that purposes get twisted throughout the years, but it still seems really off from explaining the history to what you are now. You were like good assassins that took out bad people but now we're expected to believe that you're just taken out anyone for whatever reason? Is this some sort of test? Feels like a test.

Well the only adult female from Bear Island that we have seen was Maege Mormont, head of Bear Island. She's about Tormund's age (or was - she died fighting with Robb). And House Mormont is known in the books to be skinchangers.

I think you are right in that you will need extra days next week to get through the last 2 episodes of this season. Also, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions for shows to watch. Deadwood and Rome, both are HBO shows. The only problem is they both ended after being cancelled and so they feel like they didn't end how you want. However they both have great characters and stories. The guy who played Ray in this episode is a main character in Deadwood and he did an amazing job with his character. Just a couple of suggestions and definitely don't let the process run you down to the point of not enjoying doing the videos because I think you guys do great and it has been fun watching your reactions and knowing that is how I probably looked when I was watching the first time.

This episode really caused me problems. Sure, I know, fantasy show with dragons and zombies, I know. But it is IMPOSSIBLE for Arya to have survived that attack. Several deep stab wounds in the gut, one of them with the blade twisted in the wound? With the medical technology of the day? That alone is more than enough. Then she jumps into water that would have been filthier than anything we can imagine (forget ideas of a clean pre-industrial world, the water in a city would be rank) which would have infected her beyond any hope of recovery. No way she could have lived. It still bothers me, more than anything in all seasons of the show I think.

She didn't do it deliberately - it just happened - dare I say an 'accident' ? Yes, I do. Besides that, self defense is NOT killing innocents. Jon Snow and Arya both will defend themselves or their family; again this is not the murder of unknown/innocents. Jon Snow couldn't kill Ygritte in cold blood, he couldn't/wouldn't kill the horse breeder either. Arya couldn't/wouldn't kill Lady Crane etc. All this at a great cost to themselves. Yes I think it is because they were raised by Ned with a strong sense of fairness and justice. I also think it is an inherent part of their characters.

Arya isn't the terminator, she still has a shred of human decency left. The waif hates Arya, hence why she is dragging out the whole thing. She was never teaching her, it was pretty well-tormenting someone she didn't like.
Also, what did Sandor do as a child to warrant punishment? He's called the Hound but think of a beat dog who is sent out to attack people. He isn't really bad in his core, but it is what he was taught and made into. There is a shred of human decency in him still.
Lyanna Mormont is awesome! Absolutely love her!
Also, Jaime Lannister is one you can count as broken but have you noticed that Jamie, Sandor, Jon, and Theon are all broken in some way but they are on a redemption arc. It doesn't mean that they are going to alignment shift to lawful good but they have a chance to do the right thing.
Sansa was never taught the things that a noble lady in Westeros should have been taught by her mother. Margery was taught what power she has and how to use it, also she was taught critical thinking skills. Sansa, on the other hand, had to endure six bloody seasons of pain in order to learn those skills the hard way.
Margery is doing what she must to survive because she is at the mercy of a religious zealot and a husband who is a weakling. When Tyrion said that Westeros has had cruel rulers and idiot rulers he was not kidding because Joffrey and Cersei are a lot closer than you might think. Cersei is cruel and nowhere near as bright as she thinks, not to mention she didn't start murdering people when she offed Robert. (This isn't a spoiler was just deleted from the show and wont show up) The girl who went with Cersei to see the witch was her best friend and had asked if she would marry Jaime. The witch told her that no, she would not, and that she would die and that death was so close that she could smell its breath. Cersei pushed her down a well on the way back to Casterly Rock killing her so she wouldn't get with Jaime.
Joffrey was an evil seed from an evil tree and I am fairly certain that Myrcella and Tommen took after Jaime instead of their mother.
Anyhow, I understand what it is to be exhausted and unable to put out content. I for one look forward to your videos and love every minute. One thing about this series is that it only gets better the further along you go, see the both of you on Thursday!

Please, please, please do episode 9 in two parts?
The waif was told by Jaqen to not let Arya suffer. She disobeyed his order as well. Like Steven said, the waif could have gotten her in the heart or slit her throat, but she wanted to enjoy it as if following her own agenda.
She's a hypocrite, to me. She's so jealous of Jaqen's interest in Arya.
When the hound picked up the axe at the end, it seemed that he was back to his old self. But I think the lessons learned by Ray will help him decide what type of man he'll be. I think Arya could fit on that list of broken man. All those characters were questioning their paths and where to go. Like broken people often do.
Davos is Jon's Tyrion. Tormund is his Jorah, and Brienne is Greyworm.
Ghost is his house sigil come to life, who's also his guardian....with Red eyes.
Drogo is Dany's favorite house sigil guardian, and his coloring is Red. I never noticed it up until now about the sigil guardians both being of Red, and I've watched lots of reaction videos.
They don't call Lady Olenna the queen of thorns for nothing. She is sharp with that wit and tongue. Lol
I never knew I needed a Lady Lyanna Mormont in my life, until she appeared. She is fierce. Her and Arya could have been besties, if all hell didn't separate her from her homelands back in season 1. The actress who plays her blew me away. I was like "We need more screen time of her, please?" Just a badass, and she didn't look like she hit puberty yet. Lol
Alfie puts so much emotion into the most subtle gestures when he's Theon/ Reek. He's just so good.

Without the wig on, the actress character kind of looks like Arya's mom. I think that's one of the reasons why she couldn't go through with killing her.

This is the episode that makes the least sense of the entire series. Stabbed in the guts and fall into a canal -- bleed a little and walk away. Going AWOL from a guild of faceless assassins -- walk around the city in broad daylight with zero wariness of approaching strangers. Two guys with a bow and arrow -- slaughter like 30 people (why? and how? a bow and arrow does not work like a machine gun)

You want to know what I appreciate? It's knowing the schedule. IDGAF when it eventually comes out, but I'd like to know a blueprint. You gave us that, thank you. So many other channels are so lazy with their schedules. Yes, real life happens. Yes, editing takes work. Just tell us! And you did.
Protip: You may want to prepare multiple parts for 9 and 10. I've seen people try and do it in one take, and they usually suck. Great reaction, as always. Still disagree with you Steven on the nature of redemption, but that's still a discussion for another time. Keep on keeping on.

just a comment on your conversation after the episode about stab wounds. I didn't hear this from a doctor, but from a homicide detective....he said he'd rather be stabbed or shot in the chest than in the abdomen, because there's more chance of the bullet or knife not hitting a major organ in the chest than in the abdomen.

Also I believe there's an exceptionally high risk of infection from gut wounds. Especially after falling into that river, where people probably dump their sewage since this is a pre-modern plumbing society.

Beautiful reaction to the Hound's "cold opening" of this episode! Shoe runners recruited Sir Ian McShane (one of the best character actors of our time) for one episode, so sad. The Brotherhood without banners are a group of ex-soldiers who basically help the helpless. So why did those guys kill the entire group at the construction sire of the small sept? Lyanna Mormont is Jorah's neice and the granddaughter of Jeor Mormont (ex-Lord Commander of the watch). Who did Sansa write a letter to? I am also a book reader (Read every book twice) but you must be able to separate the book story from the show arc. Know that GRRM and the show producers (Dan & Dave) collaberate on every episode as we are well past the last book now. Looking forward to the rest of your postings...Thanks fr your work...TC
