      I find myself rooting for her about halfway through this season and I'm always like "wait, how did this happened?" I always love to hate Cersei, I enjoy a good bad guy. Not good as in a decent person. Joffrey was annoying and I wanted him dead, Cersei and Ramsey are the kind of bad guys you sort of want to stay around because they are entertaining. They are terrible people, but you know a story needs a "bad guy". It's kind of nice if that someone can also entertain you.
      With Cersei, I think it's kind of hard for me to criticize her because I have no idea what a world like that would make me become as a woman. I would hope that I would be a good person, but I look at Cersei and I could see myself very easily becoming that angry resentful person because of being a woman and being trapped in that world. Dany and Arya get this strange freedom, as much as you can call it that, but Sansa and Cersei always just seem to be pawns in other people's games. Cersei uses the faith militant as her way to get out of that but just ends up becoming a pawn in the high sparrow's game. She's really not as smart as she thinks she is lol. If Tyrion hadn't of killed Tywin, Cersei would have been forced to marry Loras. The only reason she didn't marry Loras is because of Tyrion. God that must piss her off.

      @Flexo actually He can be proud of her but still have the need to stay true and loyal to his religion and his order. She Did fail at her task, and she hadn't been doing what she was supposed to and proved that she couldn't let go of her past and all, so he Had to do Something, or else one of the other Faceless Men would have, so send the waif, but it was probably a test of his, just like everything else. If she passed (ie survived), then he might've felt his duty had been fulfilled and like a lot of others had said, the Many Faced God doesn't care so Arya killing the people on her list just provides more faces for his god. And also, it might've been a test for the waif too, as she had kinda shown that she Also couldn't really let things go and obsessive (in how much she seemed to hate Arya and all). That's my theory anyway :)

      The sparrows are fucking terrible at politics. If they played the long game, they could endlessly exploit the power and authority given to them by Cersei. But instead their first act is to IMPRISON THE QUEEN??? And what is their reasoning exactly for banning trial by combat? They seriously think Cersei is just going to throw herself upon their mercy? When you back someone into a corner, they tend to lash out in crazy ways.
      The sparrows were put in charge of basically the city, and possibly the kingdom, but instead of -- oh, I don't know -- looking after the poor and destitute, their priority suddenly becomes who the nobles are sleeping with??? Aside from being puritanical dickweeds, they annoy me for being so fucking stupid.

    • @invisigoth510
      @invisigoth510 5 лет назад +13

      zammmerjammer the sparrows were playing the long game: Cersei is the Queen mother, Tommon is the monarch. Their plan was to get Cersei out of the way so they could control Tommon. They just underestimated Cersei
      Religious zealots always want a theocracy & when given an inch will take that mile ASAP

    • @zammmerjammer
      @zammmerjammer 5 лет назад +5

      @@invisigoth510 But they HAD Cersei out of the way and they WERE controlling Tommen. She was effectively alienated from power and had no supporters either amongst the common people or the other nobles. Their real threat would have come from Margaery and I would definitely believe they were too stupid to see that coming. But what could have possibly given them the notion -- from everything said about her, from what Lancel had told them about her, and from their interactions with her -- that Cersei would simply roll over when backed into a corner? The Sparrows were colossally stupid and simply didn't know how to win gracefully.

    • @sam-psonsmith9951
      @sam-psonsmith9951 4 года назад +2

      @@zammmerjammer I agree with you, there was no reason to attack cersei, she was done basically. (Except for the mountain but that is still just one guy, even if strong, only one.)
      But i think they have backed themselves into a corner the moment they publicly shamed Cersei and told all the people about the upcoming trial.
      The people wanted to see how the new rulers dealt with the old sinful rulers.
      If they would have done things differently from the beginning they could have gone the "mercy" way.
      But instead they turned it into a projectile and started shooting. Now the people are all looking at them to see how the new justice deals with criminals.
      Sure cersei wasn't accused of crime but rather braking religious morals. But the people feared and hated her.
      The sparrows used that hatred, but once the stones started rolling they couldn't stop that any more.
      They HAD to deal with her somehow, and mercy was not an option. (maybe that was the plan after the trial, to show her mercy for tommens sake. After all she had no power any more.
      They would have never thought that she had the power to blow them all up.
      Now as to why they banned the trial by combat. This was the first big trial. Which would show how the new Justice works out.
      The city is watching, they can't allow her to be in control of the Trial by immediately demanding trial by combat.
      To claim that the Gods think of her as innocent because the Mountain won, after they publicly shamed her? They couldn't do that.
      So they publicly pronounced that Trial by Combat is no testimony to the will of the Gods.
      Otherwise the Gods clearly are on Cerseis side.

      Took me a couple watches to realize that. I had initially been kinda peeved that they had done another backslide for Jaime and have him return to being a dick again, but then once I realized I was super impressed. Shows both how much Jaime's grown, and how downright smart he really is. He's far out-performing Tyrion in strategy. ("Call it tactics, not strategy." I'm really not sure, tbh)
      I initially hated this episode altogether when it aired, but it's growing on me. Aside from the logical leaps in the Arya storyline, there's actually a lot of great scenes. And the foot chase is at least fun, even if Terminator Waif is super cringy.

    Jaime is hard core bluffing. He has a horrible reputation, and while he hates 'the game,' he is actually very smart and knows how it is played, so he uses his reputation to bully Edmure to yield the castle. Jaime won with minimal bloodshed, just as Brienne wanted him to. In my eyes, he did this for her, not for Cersai. Nikolai even said in an interview that wehen he tells her Oathkeeper is hers and hers alone, he in fact means his heart.

      Wow, I always interpreted when he said “it’s yours, it will always be yours”, he was saying “I’m yours, I will always be yours”.
      He still loves Cersei too, it’s hard to turn love off, it has to sour and deplete. But ideally Brienne is the kind of woman he should be with, someone as kick ass as he used to be, but who can appeal to his better nature too.
      Jamie would probably say, if forced, that he loves Brienne but is in love with Cersei.
      Meanwhile we pretty have known since late season one or early season two that Cersei doesn’t truly love Jamie as he was barely out on campaign and she had taken Lancel to her bed.
      Also, you know that those men are safe with Jamie by surrendering. Bolton would have accepted their surrender and then had them flayed.

    At the end when Arya said she was going home, JH had a little smile on his face. He seemed happy now that Arya says who she is and where she's going. Now that Arya said "I am Arya Stark of Winterfell and I am going home" the TV program officially finished off the books. Arya saying that finished her story line in book 5. Good reactions with the surprises, shocks, and worries. I enjoyed it a lot. I also enjoyed the live show last night. I am ready for episode 9 early next week. Enjoy the weekend.

      What? None of that happens in _A Dance of Dragons_ or _any_ of the books so far, for that matter. By the time of this episode, her TV story has already gone past the books, as well as truncating and significantly changing her story from the books.

      Sorry Ookamino, it did happen near the end of book 5. Arya's storyline in Bravos had come to an end with her saying she was going home to Winterfell. This episode spawned insane debate on various fandom sites: could Arya have survived her wounds? Even combat vets, docs, & surgeons weighed in. Answer: yes, it's possible. She had everything going for her: quick access to treatment, rest, nourishment, and most importantly, being young and very fit. My husband has been deployed 5X. He's seen people accomplish insane physical feats while gravely injured: lift heavy things/people, walk/run long distances, engage in combat. Young & strong people like Arya can take a lot of punishment and survive.
    In medieval times, someone like The Hound surviving a compound leg fracture AND managing to keep his entire leg is far less likely. But I love The Hound so I'll allow it. LOL

The drive to survive is freakishly strong.

      We don't know how long Arya rested. Could have been 1 day or 1 week. No clear indication.
      Khal Drogo didn't rest or maintain his dressing (in books) and in show, his poultice may have been sabotaged or poisoned from the outset. He was also twice Arya's age. Robb suffered multiple penetrative injuries, and like Hizdhar, Renly, Roose, & Tywin a puncture wound to the heart/lungs. Talisa was pregnant and therefore pumping double the blood volume; no chance she wouldn't bleed out. Barristan suffered multiple mortal wounds and was in his late 60's/early 70's. Jon Snow did succumb to his wounds, including one directly to his heart. He was left to die. Not sure why you include him here.
      All things being equal, is it likely that every person injured like Arya would survive & capably evade/defend like this? No, it's not likely. Is it possible? Yes. Particularly when the only other outcome is death.
      To check out the discussions of this that I mentioned, head on over to reddit. Many medical professionals/veterans weighed in on this episode with gruesome (yet incredible) accounts of persons surviving all manner of horrific injury. Many did so while facing daunting physical challenges.

      Stannis the grammar Nazi Well King Robert was old and severely obese. He was pretty much a few nice dinners away from a Heart attack. Both The mountain and Khal Drogo were poisoned. Jon Snow was stabbed all over his chest and stomach by a whole squad of people. Tywin was also old and shot by two arrows, which pretty much punctured his vital organs.. Robb Stark was shot by even more arrows. Talisa was stabbed in the stomach like 10 times and being highly pregnant, she definitely wasn't in the same good health as Arya. Most of those people also were pretty much left to die, while Arya got help quickly.

      Arya is no one because she can make and use faces. If she was not no one, faces are surely poison which made Arya blind since she used a face but was not yet a faceless man. In my opinion, Jaqen was Syrio and hired by Ned Stark to train Arya in sword play and should anything happen to him, give her the skills to become what she wanted most; a warrior. Jaqen did just that but gave her the gift of being a faceless man as well. It has made Arya one of the most dangerous people on the planet.

    Not a spoiler, but a thought common amongst fans; JH was always impressed/intrigued by Arya, but knew she needed help. Inviting her to become "no one" was really all about helping her discover who she truly is, to find her inner strength after all the bullshit she's been through, and to give her the tools she'll need to get her revenge on those who wronged her family (giving the MFG lives along the way), and to help her help others in the wars to come. So yes, that look and nod at the end, was him proud that she stayed true to herself, because that's who she needs to be.

      He realized what a monster Edmure saw him as and knew that Edmure would believe his threats. It the book scene, he thinks "Must you make me say it?" -- he's being forced to make a threat he doesn't want to make, and if the threat doesn't make Edmure surrender, he will have to carry it out, so instead of making more honourable sorts of threats and risking that Edmure would take his chances against them, Jaime knew he had to make the threat so horrible that it disgusted himself to even think it, eliminating any possibility that Edmure would force him to carry it out.

    Another Novel Note (Screw Spoilers): The show never touches on this, but Jamie's siege of Riverrun resulted in the death of his childhood hero, Brynden "Blackfish" Tully. When he was a child, Tywin Lannister was in talks with Hoster Tully to betroth Lysa to Jamie. Instead of spending the time to become acquainted with Lysa, Jamie spent his free time listening to the Blackfish's old war stories from the Fifth Blackfyre Rebellion (also called the War of the Ninepenny Kings).

      Zvi mur The nickname came after he got back from the War of the Ninepenny Kings. Catelyn remembers in A Game of Thrones, Chapter 34, that her father and uncle were arguing and Lord Hoster Tully called him "the black goat of the Tully flock." When Brynden countered that their sigil's a fish, Lord Hoster dubbed him Blackfish.
      The showrunners penned an audio segment for the DVD's extra features where the Blackfish detailed the name came much earlier than the books. He recalled it was immediately after the War of the Ninepenny Kings that his brother had betrothed him to the daughter of another lord. Having just earned his knighthood, the show's Blackfish claims that he wanted to remain a bachelor. He later realizes that had he gone through with the marriage, his family would have been able to provide Robert with one of Westeros's largest navies during the Rebellion. Since this flies directly against the material from the books, George R.R. Martin declared the whole lot non-canon to the books, but allowed they can remain canon for the show.

    I believe Jaime has always been honorable ever since he was a child. It is why he joined the Kingsguard at age 16, forfeiting all titles and land ownership. It enraged his father who didn’t understand why he would give up everything just to be a bodyguard. It is why he killed the Mad King, to save an entire city from burning alive. Ned and Robert only saw that he stabbed the king he was supposed to protect in the back, labeling him Kingslayer, not Savior of the City as he should have been. It is why he was mad when his men stabbed Ned in the leg. He wanted a fair, honorable fight. It is why he gave Brienne Oathkeeper, to keep his word to Catelyn Stark. The bad things he has done he did for his father after Tywin had rebuked him and played on his honor and obligation to defend his House. And for Cercei, whom he loves. He doesn’t want to love her, but he himself says we don’t get to choose whom we love. And even in carrying out her wishes he finds the least dishonorable way to do so, (pushing Bran out the window notwithstanding, he did that lest someone find out about him and Cercei and thus bring him and his House dishonor). How many times, when told to do some bad thing by Tywin or Cercei has he said “But I gave my word” or “I took an oath” or “I swore a vow” or “it is my duty”, only for them to say “Your duty is to your family and the continuation of your House. You are a Lannister. That is all that matters”. He has struggled between honor and loyalty and only chosen loyalty when to do otherwise would bring dishonor. Jaime does not need redemption. He needs to be free to make the choices he knows are right and to be recognized for the honorable man that he has always been. Only Brienne sees the honor in him and that is why they have the bond they do. But then, maybe I just see the good in people. What do I know. P&L. Dann.

    What Jamie did was extremely honorable imo. He took the castle without killing anyone but the Blackfish, and that's only because he wouldn't give up. His speech to Edmure was more of a "I can do this, but only if it's my only option" thing. His "threat" led to no casualties and a peaceful solution. Season 1 Jamie would've just thrown his army and resources at the problem in order to take Riverrun, causing the deaths of thousands. He needed to say what he said to avoid that. Plus I love the callback to pushing Bran out of the window... "The things we do for love."

Throughout her entire time there, he was pretty much like "ummm are you sure you want this?" and Arya stubbornly believed that she did until he asked her to kill a decent woman and it turns out that she could never be "No one" because she's still very attached to her family. Arya is fueled by revenge and it's less about becoming some cold-blooded assassin. Sucks that it took her this long to realize it but she's a Stark after all and there are plenty of other slow learners beloved on the show.

In a land full of men like Ned who start a war in order to keep their honor unharmed or men like Littlefinger who wants to be on top of everything crushing everyone below, Jaime is by far the only one who put the peace of the kingdom and the lives of people he does't even know above his own honor. He is not a hero or a entirely correct person, he almost killed a innocent child, but he is quite better then most of other characters, in my opinion.

      I agree completely. Jaime is the one who has been vilified most, yet the only one who has conducted himself correctly in what the Hospitaler in "Kingdom of Heaven" called RIGHT ACTION. Jaime has never felt he was entitled to anything. He loved his brother unconditionally and was torn between his sister's hatred of Tyrion. He has always been the man in the middle.

      Jaime may seem like a bad guy because he's not on the right side. He threatened a good guy, but to him Edmure is a bad guy. You can't expect Jaime to act like he's on the other side when he's never given anyone cause to think he would do that. He's still fighting for his sister, but not everyone who fights for Cersei is a bad person. Take a look at Dickon Tarly.

    I think Jaqen was totally void of caring what Arya did. Lady Crane life was paid for by that actress, she had to die either way. He also promised the dead god Arya because he sent the Waith to kill her. That promise’s payment was delivered by the life of the Waith. Arya has no debt to pay and Jaqen said that she would never be no one, I think the “finally a girl is no one” was a test to see if she would finally admit that she didn’t want to run away from hardship and she wanted to return to do her Arya Stark things.

  • @Stosszahlansatz
    @Stosszahlansatz 5 лет назад +12

    The Waif death paid for the one owed because Arya did not kill the actress. After that, Arya was basically free to go. I think Jaqen smirked because he liked Arya and was happy when Arya (by saying her name) was finally telling the truth. Before that, she was lying to Jaqen (until she got blind) and to herself (after she got blind).

    Jaime has to play the part of a Lannister to convince Edmure to surrender the castle. He’s still a good guy who’s forced to do horrible things. There was no way the siege would end up with no big losses which is why he has to commit to his “dishonorable” name to achieve an honorable end. And there was barely any casualty in the end (RIP Blackfish though).
    Also, he called the Freys’ bluff in front of Edmure previously and he knows that Edmure will believe his threats after that hook, line and sinker. He has to make his threats extremely believable to drive the point through. And yeah, Edmure is a wuss.
    Edit: I think Jaime is internally conflicted while talking to Edmure like “don’t make me say this dude” or “say shit for honor again and you’ll see how shitty i can be.” Or something, lol.

    The reason the Kindly Man (aka "Jaq'uen Hagar") allowed Arya to leave was because a life was owed to the Many-Faced God. They planned on it being Arya's life, but since Arya killed the Waif, the life was still paid. So there's no need to pursue Arya at this point.
    Ian McShane is *not* a fan of Game of Thrones, and didn't want the part, but they effectively backed a dump-truck full of money up to his door, told him he wasn't going to be playing a bad guy but rather one of the nicest guys the series had ever seen, and that he was going to get to ham it up as a corpse, and it convinced him to do one single episode. That's all he'd do. So that's why we got the awesomeness that is Ian McShane being one of the nicest, coolest guys in the series for one episode, followed by a shot of him hanging in mid-air with a purple face and his eyes all bulging and his tongue sticking out.
    I agree with you, Nikki. The man-bun? Not a thing. If you're planning on wearing a man-bun, you should ask yourself a simple question: Is my name Toshiro Mifune? If the answer is "no" then DO NOT WEAR A FREAKING MAN-BUN!

    This episode is a great example of what I was talking about in our earlier interaction. Jaime capturing Riverrun with almost no loss of blood seems like a dishonourable thing on the surface, but when you actually think about it, it’s a very clever act of command which kept his soldiers alive (which is something a commander always wants to do) and also kept the bulk of the enemy alive (a humane outcome) while securing his objective.
    Traditional SF/fantasy always wants fights to the death, heroic bravery etc, but in actual medieval warfare this was the kind of result everyone was actually looking for, and shows Jaime’s skill as a commander and strategist.
    This is why GoT is so damn clever it’s forcing you to look behind the obvious or the expected and to think about what is really going on. That is why it’s so damn good. It’s not just the mostly great cinematography, the rich characterisations (almost to the end) and the shocks along the way, it’s the constant ambiguity in the whole story and what occurs.
    Another example is the trial by combat situation. Trial by combat is absolutely the worst legal process ever invented. It was a ridiculous way of achieving justice, so on the surface its removal is actually a just, wise act of kingship on Tommen’s part. But the sparrows are dangerous religious fanatics (as much as I admire their lower class cred), though on the other hand, Cersei is totally amoral and the Mountain was a psychopath even before being Frankensteined…. So what is right in this case? Is there a right?
    Genius stuff

      parchment up again, as tight as one hand would allow, and handed it to Peck. “No,” he said. “Put

Jamie seen affected (is his problem, he cant escape the gravity of his family acts, and his own acts), by at the same time, he get a plan thank to that. "You say that we are awful? Ok, this awful Lannister have your baby, and will have the life of your men. An i am not a pathetic Frey. Choose well." Not matter if it's true or not. We know not. Jamie offer him a good deal, and didn't harm the Tully soldiers when they surrender. He even wanted to take Blackfish alive. A clean victory. Better than what his father or the Frey would have got. Jamie play the cart of the evil man everyone thinks he is. He is not. But the people believe. And in comparison with the Frey, he has some real authority. He play well, he made a credible threat, and got the most clean victory in Games of Thrones history. One man dead (and because he wanted to fight) to take a castle? I will say that Jamie did very good here.
