I just bought a brand new M3 manual. Hmmm. Part of the decision, or at least in the back of my mind I was thinking they might do this and the manual would probably keep it's residual or maybe even appreciate I don't know.

The fines are making them highly uncompetitive, and are strangling them.

I think BMW have a strong brand and are doing pretty well with their EV fleet. The 4 series being an example of a EV that is selling pretty well for them. They also have a loyal fan base, and are the cars of choice for fleet cars in a lot of Europe and the UK.
I feel like BMW is really gonna regret making the M3/4 all electric. These cars are known for pure messing about doing donuts, sliding around, cutting up and track performance because they're the best M cars for performance. But an all electric M3/4 would be an absolute BOAT and boring to drive, I don't care what copium their plug supplies them with but it won't be the same at all.
They will have 2 versions. An ICE and an EV based on the neue klass. And likely will continue with the S58 on the ICE version but likely in hybrid form.
I have a feeling based on the age/time of filming of this video that BMW was originally preparing to offer only an EV M3/M4. The market has changed along with consumer sentiment and demand since then. I predict BMW will pivot a bit (like many other automakers are doing) by offering both hybrid (mild, HEV, PHEV) and EV options. I think BMW will still sell the EV version but as like an Mi3 or i3M. They will also sell an M3 hybrid along side it. I think due to the somewhat recent market change and limited development time a hybrid M3 will be a slightly updated S58 (likely with port injection added w/some minor updates to support electrification) running on lower boost/making less power (like the S68) married up with a motor to give it a bit more power than the G80. They'll do the minimum to meet EU emission regulations.

Honestly, I'd still doubt we've seen the last of the ice m cars. I can see a line of Ev Ms, but i don't think they'd make that change so quickly. I don't want anything more modern than what i already have, so it won't really affect me.

The interesting part of these decisions is that they are going completely against their own DNA and handling philosophy. BMW was never like Lotus but they did pride themselves on having vehicles that were great to drive that were very well balanced. We saw the M5 tip the scales like a behemoth pig. They are offsetting this by just throwing HP at it but all the consumables will take a hit like brakes, tires, etc. and the handling will also take a significant hit with the added weight, there are no tricks here, there are only so many ways to solve for this. There will also be increasing ownership costs due to the additional complexities of a hybrid powertrain. Personally, i'm all for evolution but the weight penalties for current battery tech and electrification is not adding a ton of value.
