Just received my book. Growing up we didn't grow a garden we did fields of okra, beans, potatoes, corn, etc. One year daddy came home with 500 tomato plants and yep we were on our knees planting every one of them. Here's to say we or our neighbors never went hungry.
My Grandmother and Mother always said to NEVER plant in the garden until after Mother's Day (2nd week in May - we are in zone 6b). I always wonder if it was because of the zone recommendations or it was because they wanted that last holiday before all the hard work started. It has always worked for me 😉
It’s probably because even if you are past your last frost date, your soil isn’t warm enough for warm weather crops. That’s how it is for us here in my zone 6b. The tomatoes just shiver if you don’t wait.
@@hazelbellefarm476 exactly! When I lived in Vermont memorial day weekend was “get’r all done’ for the planting. It took me years to figure out Florida growing. So happy to finally have figured it out. Now if only I could get out of “corporate BS” and garden for a living I would be a happy old lady! 🤣
I just received my book today. It is wonderful - informative, organized, and beautifully photographed/illustrated. Such an encouragement for new gardeners and a reminder to experienced gardeners that you don’t need huge property to yield an abundance of food. Congratulations, Jill, for birthing this book thru your dreams, hard work and commitment.
Congrats, Jill! I am so excited for you making your book a reality. Thank you for all you are going to bless by teaching us how to grow food & the lovely things too!
Even though I have gardened all my life you have great ideas!! You are right it’s a lifetime of learning. I love growing new and unusual things. Your charts are great! Happy gardening ❤️
This was me a week ago starting my garden completely from seed. I was positive i drowned half my seeds because I didn't realize how slow my containers were at getting water and added more. But I kept telling myself " things want to grow if I let them". AND THEY DID. I also planted double of everything I needed, just in case. so far, so good. it has to make it through the actual garden, But I have plants and can reassess when harvest time comes what worked and what didn't.
For those in cooler areas you can also try winter sowing. It's a great method & and hands-off approach. No special soils, lights needed. I definitely want to get going and until I can start indoors, I use it to scratch the itch
Just ordered the book! Excited for my new season and MUCH larger garden... Hoping to find some businesses looking for flowers and/or veggies. Excited! First off, have to rehab the house... huge job!
Thank you, thank you, for your knowledge, your enthusiasm and your ability to share your knowledge and experience. I am in Canada and have a much shorter growing season that you, but have gotten most of my seeds and seed starting supplies so I can get the needed head start. I love gardening and all the wonder that comes from the variety of growth available to any and all who chose to embark on the adventure. I thank God for putting you where you are and helping me find you..
Funny I stared my gardening journey in 2019, lol I did it with seeds and I was fascinated by it, now I keep growing from seeds 😅 I think I was lucky (but also not everything was 💯 😂) now I’m also learning to save seeds, and I’m still learning, thank you 😊
I already start seeds for more than 20 years. First year a few vegetables but since 10 years I start all my vegetables by seeds at home in a tiny greenhouse and I bring them as they are big enough to my allotment. Only leeks are troubling me so I hope I can learn more about that. Thank you for your video!
Just wanted to say congratulations on your new book! I just received mine in the mail and just getting started on reading. You are such an inspiration to so many and watching your family grow is so heart filling. Thanks again for bring sunshine into our day. Keep on growing 🪴💐🌷🥀🌺🌸🌼🌻 From Iowa zone 5
I love your videos Jill! You are the very first gardening channel I ever watched on YT! I started most of my garden from seed last year! We are moving this year so I am a bit emotional about the lack of certainty about this garden season!
Just made my seed starting schedule.!! Anticipating that this will keep me on track. No guess work when I’m in the mix of it all. I’ve already done the work thanks to you ❤
I love growing from seed. Just home garden and food for us two. I like to grow my own variety! I often start in egg cartons , small amount of seed growing mix and only on pot the ones that do well. 💕💕🌻🌻
Jill, does your book cover all of this? Examples of what to plant and when to plant it. What you end up transplanting, etc.? I love that you said that about your sunflowers, we planted sunflowers for the first time last year. It of course rained so much right after and for days that the different varieties mixed together. I believe it really stunted the growth because they didn’t have the space that they needed.
I would use good containers for myself that I can reuse year after year but that expense really cuts into profit if you’re growing to sell and need to give those to the customer who may just throw it away not realizing what it is.
So my question is when I decide to transplant my seedlings, I know I have to harden off, my plants seem to shrink or die back some. They normally end up doing well, but I sometimes wonder if I should start them outside from seed.
Used your seed starting method and went through my seeds and put sticky notes inside my containers. Realized I have too many to do it right so just clustered them and put it on top of all the others in each section. I need to get another container for just doing the method and keep the other for longterm storage.
I have such spring fever. We are even thinking of starting a large church garden. I supply the plants to my church family every year. Also, is there a way to buy a used side by side for your hubby? It would be so beneficial for your farm for both of you
I am having to find productive things to do to keep me out of the greenhouse a little longer (zone 7b here). I am itching to get my hands dirty and start some seeds.
Everything you say makes sense. The main reason I grow from seed is to get variety. Our small town may have half a dozen types of tomato plants (at a price) but really limited in types of lettuce, cucumbers etc and limited in how many different veges types they stock. Have you done, or are you doing a video on growing seedings after the germination? I can get seeds to germinate (even had success this year growing some native plants 10 year past the use by date) but struggle to get the seedlings to grow strong in the punnet before planting out. The plants in punnets in the shops are 3 times the size and ready to go once in the ground, but mine seem small and delicate. I am missing something between germination and planting out. Any advice?
The grow lights are key to making the seedlings strong. If you think about what makes the plants look so great at the box stores….they have the plants growing in lit, warm greenhouses, and they fertilize the plants. Thats what you are paying for - the care they gave the plant after it sprouted.
Thank you so much for this simple straight forward video! I have to ask because I never ask the garden experts but I live in Hawaii, same weather all year round. Iv looked up my zone but still don’t understand if that matters? Not a lot of videos on gardening in Hawaii or climates that are the same all year round. Advice on growing from seed could I start at anytime of the year?
What a blessing to be able to grow year round. You can start seeds year round. I would make sure you are growing things that are heat tolerant and will thrive in your climate
Any advice for how I can harden off seedlings if I am away from the house at work all day? This is the only thing stopping me from trying to start seeds inside to get a jump on the season.
Jill, I was so excited as I received your book! The only thing is that it has this blue (unremovable) strip of tape on the cover 😳? Did this happen to anyone else? I posted a picture of the cover in my community post to see if anyone else had this issue? www.youtube.com/@maritzarivera4009/community
