I would always have trouble with my seedlings not growing well in spite of a good potting mix as a beginner 5 years ago , when I came across your thumb packing that you show in almost all your seed starting videos and I realized there were so many air pockets that were not allowing the seedling roots to grab on to the soil and grow , thanks for this tip and for this video , a lot to learn if one is listening and watching carefully , and thank you for taking the time from your busy schedule to make these videos for newbies and gardeners in general.

I really enjoy your videos. Very informative and love seeing you actually planting and growing. I've never started seedlings indoors under grow lights before and actually just got back into gardening after many years. I planted a bunch of winter greens outdoors this fall and had problems with fungus gnats. I had not heard of using cinnamon until I saw this video. I googled it after seeing this and found that only Ceylon Cinnamon works for this application and not the normal common ground cinnamon. I see you are using the ground cinnamon. Have you found that it does work?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 лет назад

I actually found that it does work. That is what I use generally. If you can get the Ceylon at a fair price I would go with that. It is a bit harder to find. My guess is they both have anti-fungal. Boiling water in the starting mix helps kill fungus eggs.

You speak the truth about chemical fertilizer. My major is in Environmental science and the atoms that are in NPK in chemicals and organic are exactly the same atoms. In chemistry this follows the law of conservation which mean it cannot be created not destroyed. So a chemical fertilizer of NPK is the same element as NPK of organic. However, among other things that may be added to the chemical fertilizer but you can say the same about organic fertilizer.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

Always bothers me people think it is fake and poisonous. Now organic is best but a little chemical doesn't wreck everything.

overwatering plants inside is a big issue ive always had mostly cause of lack of airflow, you really gotta wait till the top dries out and then some it makes it kinda dificult, i feel like its just not meant to be lol thanks for the reassurement

great information thank you! I couldn't find the liquid with the ratio I wanted and had to settle on a 4 12 4. I was SO intent on doing the 1/4 strength that I wasn't thinking about what the actual strength was, so I diluted it. When I water, I just use what I diluted and it's fine. But for future use, is the 12 too much phosphorus for initial watering, or could I go ahead and use this 4 12 4 full strength?

Question, Gary. If the compost has dried out on seeds that haven't yet germinated or sprouted above 'ground' is it worth pursuing watering or just ditch them? I have a tray of beets that look dried out (forgot to water them yesterday) and they haven't sprouted yet. (I'm in the UK so different climate)

Hello, I have grown my thyme for a week. They haven't sprouted yet. I found green fungus growing on some soil in the morning. Could it be because the temperature is not high these days, so I wrapped them in a plastic bag and put them in the sun? At that time, I found that there was a lot of water vapor, some of them drip on the soil. I sprinkled cinnamon powder on the soil now. What should I do now? Could you please give me some advice? Thank you for your help ~

Green fungus is algae. Cover it with some starting mix. I wouldn't wrap them. Just be patient.

So for the last several years chive seeds have been problematic. Lots of people have said, including myself, that they arent germinating well.

I’ve successfully grown many herbs and vegetables following your advice but can’t start chives to save my life… do you have any tips? I’ve tried seeds from different vendors, I’ve tried keeping them warm with a heat pad, I’ve tried soaking them in water first, I’ve tried keeping them in the dark etc. no luck.

Chives were problematic for last several years. People complained. I think there were a lot of bad seeds. Only advice is dont leave the soil over statured and let it dry a bit between waterings. I find chives to be super easy but for 21, 22 and early 23, I could not get them to germinate.

One of the things I don't like about Miracle Grow is the added food dye they use to make the solution blue...I don't think that is good for plants or people

The colors in the processed ferts are often from the chemical reactions. Again, go mostly organic and you can find the same stuff as MG in other ferts and they have different colors and better companies. I go mostly organic. As all things in the world are chemicals. Good luck with your gardens.

Be careful with neem oil because it can cause burnt tips. Keep the plant in the shade until the neem oil dries down.

When the tops dries, in 1-3 days depend on the size of the plant, they should be watered.

Some people dilute urine. I will actually be using worm compost tea this year, diluted, for my seed starts. I like to try different things.

This comment o fertiliser is not for indoor plants but for out door ones. so many soil critters need to have carbs found in dead leaves and manure the grass in manure and such.
It is all hte same for the plant what fertiliser you put on but the soil does much better with sweet little worms turning it over and they eat carbs like we do so... put on lots of manure full of grass ibts or wood etc Do carbon farming.
It is not just worms either, who like carbs other soil organism like them to. Htere is or should be more creature in a spade of dsoil than mammal on the earth so they need food. Maybe they also give a lot of live energy that is somehow helpful to us.
