When they had to trick him into losing his soul to bring out Angelus, they created a dream sequence in which he got everything that he had ever wanted: acceptance from Connor, an apology from Wesley, unfracturing the gang, being the hero that saved the day, consummating his love for Cordy. It needed to be actually perfect in order to break the curse.
