Hyper Gliding in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

  • This video describes a technique in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe whereby you can achieve a greater range of mobility and speed than normal while in the gliding sections.
I've never seen an English-language video which documents any of this, so here we are.
TWD98 video referenced: • Reacting to Every Mari...
    ---
A few additional thoughts based on the comments:
    1. I have tried testing triple stacking motion glider + D-pad + stick, but I don't think this actually does anything. I think there is a limit at which it maxes out.
    2. AFAIK this is not the same as glider vectoring. My understanding of glider vectoring is that it refers to a quirk with how the forward and horizontal velocities are added when gliding, which results in diagonal motion being faster. That does not require motion or D-pad gliding to perform. The technique this video is describing is basically motion glider, but without needing to use motion, so I called it something else.
    3. I've seen it stated in a few places that the D-pad maps to gyro. While there may be some level of truth to this, there is also a distinction. Completing a race using primarily gyro controls will give you the wheel icon on the score screen, but driving solely using the the D-pad will not.
    ---
Here is also a related video from the Japanese community which was created several years back, but doesn't seem to touch on all of the GameCube controller (or gyro-less controller) stuff:

I have a wired pro controller that doesn't have a gyro sensor and can do motion glider much more easily. However, being a more competitive player, I find soft drifting much more difficult. I find holding the stick at a 45-degree angle when drifting causes you to turn much tighter due to the doubled handling on the ground. In order to charge mini turbos quicker and play better on the ground, it's definitely better to still only use motion controls in the air.
Edit: Now when playing online, I was able to find a clawing technique that allows me to use it anytime without having to switch my whole right hand to the other side during a glider.

From what I've experienced, having motion controls without the gyro sensor is actually better for drifts also. I noticed that doing normal left and right inputs more softly (no angles) is actually just as effective at charging MTs as hard inputs and softdrifting, my best guess is because of this 6:50. It also feels more consistent to drift this way than softdrfting because you won't have to worry about getting the proper angles all the time. I call it "fine-drifting"

The octagonal gate around the GameCube controller's joystick makes it extremely difficult to soft-drift, since the 45 degree notch is just outside the soft-drift range, and you're naturally inclined to go at that angle due to the notches. @@br4twurst007 this is also simply referred to as motion glider by the community, just another means of achieving it. This method of doing it has also been known since late 2020, much earlier than the video you linked, so it's far from new
