Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
Beatles songs never get old, even the ones that are definitely "of their time."
u meant "timeless"
@@formula2tom225beat me to it by two years
"I sit and meanwhile back in Penny Lane..."
The line rolls over into the next verse.
Penny Lane was a street near where John & Paul grew up in Liverpool. All the things they sing about are still there. The bank, the Barber shop, The shelter in the middle of a roundabout. It's still a thrill to walk around that area knowing the impact it had on popular culture. I love it.
One of my favorite Beatles songs - just a lovely beat and imagery that paints a real picture of the happenings.
This is one of their songs that I never get tired of listening to, as a Lad Born and Bred in Liverpool, I live about a Mile from Penny Lane and about two miles from Strawberry Fields 🎵🎵
The variety of music just makes their growth that much more special.
Always been one of my favorite Beatles songs. Just a fun and uplifting song.
A “Mac” refers to a raincoat, specifically the MacIntosh raincoat.
Such a beautiful and fun song I don't know how anybody can't feel good after listening to this song or any Beatles song for that matter.......AMAZING!!
Definitely in my happy songs playlist! That horn! A favorite of mine to sing.
"There beneath the blue suburban skies I sit, and meanwhile back...(to the events taking place at Penny Lane)."
I LOVE that you're reacting to this song ❤
My younger brother LOVES the " oldies' and loves this song so.. he would ALWAYS say if I ever have a daughter her name will be Penny! Well..is first born was a beautiful baby girl and the named her Penny. Not Penny Lane but Penny Anne 😄🌸💓
Just another beautiful song by the greatest band ever.
I could see that you were a bit shocked by being instantly injected into a whole new world - the second that the song began - well thats what any good 'art' can do - welcome to a whole new world!
I like a lot that song from the Beatles. It's quite naive (in a nice way) , easy going, happy, simple. We need such things sometimes.
The lads continued to shatter sonic barriers, this time introducing the piccolo trumpet to their many fans. David Mason's now-famous solo is the absolute pinnacle of a spectacular recording.
The sights & sounds that he experienced on Penny Lane are in my eyes & in my ears
So many colorful textures in this one .
The flutes & the Piccolo Trumpet / horns give layered brilliance .
Hard to be anything but optimistic hearing this one ...
The unusual trumpet used in Penny Lane is the piccolo trumpet used in baroque classical music. Paul McCartney had seen a performance one of Bachs Brandenburg concertoes on television and heard the trumpet. He then asked their producer about it, George Martin was a classically trained musician, and he brought in the famous classical trumpeter David Mason to do the solo on Penny Lane. The performer is on RUclips describing his experience working with the Beatles. He received the musicians scale wage for doing the solo! I think it was 27 English pounds in 1967.
Penny Lane is a street where the John and Paul changed busses to downtown Liverpool. George’s dad worked for the bus service and this was his hub. Most of the locations in the song are still in the area. I have been to the area when friends visit to show them the street.
John and Paul wrote complimenting songs about their childhood in Liverpool - John "Strawberry Fields Forever" and Paul "Penny Lane" - Paul's is very much a love letter of memories.
The Beatles are from Liverpool and they were re-visiting that part of Liverpool where Penny Lane was (It's even on the front of the bus) and walking around their own people :)
You should look up James Corden and his carpool karaoke with Paul McCartney they did when he was in London. They visit Penny Lane and the barber shop and other places in Beatles' songs. It was real fun to watch.
Penny Lane is in Liverpool . not London .
I know. He was doing his show from London but met with Paul McCartney in Liverpool.
As a teenager one of my solo pass times was to walk into town and window shop the stores and car dealerships there and back and if I still had more time stop at the Library. Thank god for simpler times.
WAS ON PENNY LANE TODAY GREETINGS FROM LIVERPOOL
I've been OBSESSED with the Beatles since I was four years old, and I would say, if I had to pick one song, 'Penny Lane' would be my absolute favourite!
For me it's the perfect Summer pop song.
You read the lyrics right, 'Meanwhile, back in in Penny Lane...'
Though you didn't actually whether you liked the song or not...x
The piccolo trumpet solo was inspired by Paul listening to Bach's Brandenburg Concerto. George Martin contacted the Royal Academy of Music and requested trumpet player David Mason to come in to add the solo section.
Amazing what changing one word does to the meaning, and sometimes no comma the same.
It's "...and meanwhile back.... in Penny Lane", etc 🙂
Penny Lane in Liverpool was part of Paul's (and John's) childhood and teenage years; all the places mentioned can still be seen today - you might like to check out 'Carpool Karaoke' featuring Paul McCartney some time. They drive along it and pop in on some of the shopkeepers and the barber, ending up with a surprise human jukebox/ sing-along at the pub. I think you'd enjoy it, it's a lot of fun with a lot of great music.
Now have a listen to John's tribute to Liverpool called 'Strawberry Fields Forever.' :)
it's KSO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you notice the quick down-stair-step harmonic progression in the first part of the verse? So much fun and unusual. This was a very well-constructed piece of music. And that piccolo trumpet was played so beautifully. But I miss the lyrics about angst and lost love ... NOT. It's refreshing to hear lyrics about ANYTHING else. Great song, just great. Love you, KSO!
Penny Lane is an actual place that The Beatles were familiar with.
BTW people these day might not know what a "mac" is.... (And the banker never wears a mac in the pouring rain) .. That is short for "Macintosh" which is an older type of raincoat. .
The name has a 'K' in it, 'Mackintosh' and was established in Scotland in 1824, the first manufacturer to successfully produce waterproof clothing. The company is still going.
As in the famous Bonzo Dog exchange:
"Have you got a light, Mac?"
"No. But I've got a dark brown overcoat".
And meanwhile back means “And back to the story”.
Love your reactions!
Keep them coming
Phenomenal amount of things going on musically that you would not hear in other pop songs when this was released in 1966.
Love it! The tooting horns part influenced the horns in Michael Buble's Haven't Met You Yet, and Paul apparently likes it! And I love the way you don't interrupt songs ♥️🇨🇦
Have you listened to The Rutles? A homage and satire of the Beatles and the British Invasion, their songs are really good. Neil Innes had written the music out of a love of the Fab Four, and was friends with George Harrison. I think of them as alternate universe Beatles. There's even a counterpart to Penny Lane, Doubleback Alley.
It's like I sit. And meanwhile back....verses go into eeach other cleverly I might add. Love you K.S.O.!! Keep up the Beatles rampage. I just am realizing how amazing and DIFFERENT each song is!
Lovely memories here. For a guy with a cute toothy gap try:- Dragon, "April sun in Cuba." The lead singer is Marc Hunter, sadly passed away, great New Zealand singer.
And on the flipside, Strawberry Fields Forever✌🏼♥️
One of the first Beatles single to not make it to number one (backed with 'Strawberry Fields Forever')...and one of the best things they ever wrote.
"and meanwhile back ... at penny lane" the word "back" signals the beginning of the next verse. it applies to what comes after it, and not what came before it.
"penny lane" is a very paul mccartney song. the most musical of the beatles, he liked to introduce new sounds to rock'n'roll, like the fluting notes of the piccolo trumpet over the end of the song. john's flipside to this tune was "strawberry fields." if you haven't heard it yet, you should. both songs were named for places that actually exist (or existed) in liverpool, where the boys were born and grew up. lovely stuff. ☺
Best part for me is the very ending. 😀🎶
A fire engine is mentioned. The fire station was about 800 yards away from the Penny Lane junction, on Mather Avenue. I lived about 200 yards away from the 'shelter in the middle of the roundabout' from 1975 to 1987. And by the way, DON'T ask for an explanation of the line: 'four of fish and finger pie'!
This one and Eleanor Rigby are my favorites by them.
Eleanor Rigby and Nowhere Man are the ones for me!
My all-time favorite Beatles song. I defy anyone to listen and not be in a good mood!
Brilliant, I have listened to this song hundreds of times & have only just realized that everyone comes in for a haircut..
or a shave
"And The Banker Never Wears A Mac" = Raincoat
song-accompanying videos (in those far-off days) meant little ... something for the eyes to do while the ears were about their work. It would be another decade before they became integral to the song experience (Queen)
I've always thought there would be a handful of songs and movies that would be celebrated a hundred years after their release. This is one of those, definitely. But my supposed quantity is way off... now I think there maybe hundreds of songs and a lot more films that will make their 100 year anniversary with new fans discovering them, prolonging them into ?? 200 year old works ?? I think so.
There is a line of sexual innuendo in Penny Lane. When Paul got stuck on the third verse, he called in John to help him finish the song. That’s when the line “four of fish and finger pie” entered the picture (most likely via John). According to multiple sources, it’s a term teenagers use for a certain type of sexual foreplay.
“Women would never dare say it, except to themselves,” Paul said in Anthology. “Most people wouldn’t hear it, but ‘finger pie’ is a nice little joke for the Liverpool lads who like a bit of smut.” As for the “four of fish,” that was a reference to the price of a small portion of fish and chips.
My favourite Beatles song.
If you enjoy music with well written lyrics you should look up some Split Enz -Crowded House. "I hope I never" and "I've been locked out" . The new Zealand brothers Neil and Tim Finn behind the bands where exceptional
I can hardly see the video. Great song! 💕
Childhood memories
Yeah it's amazing Paul McCartney heard a piccolo trumpet and he asked George Martin if we could get anybody so he got someone from an orchestra and then they also put in a piccolo flute itsfunneh there's a rare version of the Penny Lane where the piccolo trumpet place and another lick just like the one at the very end except in a lower key at the resolve chord it is funny I think there was a bit where the somehow the horse got scared and knocked over Ringo's drums it's pretty hilarious this is another Powerhouse single I mean you had Strawberry Fields on one side and it had Penny Lane on the other side you almost can't call either side a B-side just like with Hey Jude and then you got Revolution on the other side it's like how much legendary music can you fit on a small piece of Wax I remember when I was a lot younger and I heard this song and it just I don't know what it is like changed my whole consciousness like it expanded its somehow and brought it to a different place I've never been I mean you might not believe me but I swear it's true I love that line where the nurse thinks she's in a play but she is anyway it's just like Shakespeare said the whole world's a stage alright girl that was a great reaction
There is a form of literature in which the author depicts a milieu. In this sort of writing there is no plot, no message, no consequential action. The author is only focused on creating a vivid scene in the imagination of the audience. The "and meanwhile, back" is about thinking of a Liverpool street the authors knew, as it was when they were very young, around the late Forties. They are painting a picture of a memory.
K.S.O, One song you may find interesting to react to is "Russians" by Sting. It came out in 1985 and is now, unfortunately, more revelant than ever
In context It should read "and meanwhile back in Penny Lane" this or the other thing is happening.
I was only on Penny Lane last week 💕😅
And meanwhile back .....IN PENNY LANE !!!
You would love “Blackbird” by the Beatles if you like this❤️
Aww, I wanted to hear what you thought of the song! 🙂
I wonder if Sincerely has seen Paul with James Corden in carpool karaoke where they drive around Penny Lane
So glad you are back!
Give Eleanor Rigby a listen.
Eleanor Rigby is like a whole life in 2 minutes and 8 seconds!
@@jamesalexander5623 My freshman English Literature in college (whom I had a crush on) actually had us look at this song.
The animated video is great too
Please take a listen and react to Robbie Williams singing Angels live at Knebworth The crowd is huge and he is at his peak. An amazing performer.. If you think Queens crowds a big take a look at Robbie Williams at Knebworth.
One of many great early Beatle songs
Hope all is well ✋
It wasn’t “early”.
And on the reverse side…………Strawberry Fields Forever.
Best Double A Side of All Time!
Please take a listen and react to Robbie Williams singing Angels live at Knebworth The crowd is huge
I love your reactions. ❤
I am not sure of the exact number but there are something like seven key changes in "Penny Lane".
I would like to visit at least in my dreams^*^......!
I haven't been on here in along time. You look beautiful as always. It's nice to be back
❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘
Just so you know: every Beatles song is better than anything else. Anything. Even all their covers of Chuck Berry, Motown and rockabilly. Try "Here, There, and Everywhere".
Haven't seen you in awhile my hunni, nice to see you again.
You too my Hunni!!
It was my bank and barber shop.
"And meanwhile back in Penny Lane"
John Lennon walked the streets of Liverpool and they just stare, he walked the streets of New York and they shot him.
John Lennon on a white steed, lol
Penny Lane is Paul's favorite place in London.
It's in Liverpool, not London
one of my favorite places from childhood memories too...love this song but honestly it just makes me miss my younger years so much.
Tickets just went on sale this morning for Paul's new world tour.
Liverpool
@@DavidGigg Thankyou. I misfired on that. Bring a Beatles crazy all my life I shouldn't have made such a mistake. Thanks again @, DavifGigg

Meanwhile back in Penny Lane...
If you want to hear another brilliant, catchy song based on this one, check out Elliott Smith's "Baby Britain." The title itself is a reference to "Penny Lane."
Here's Paul McCartney 2018 visiting "Penny Lane" (at 2 Min, 15 sec.) at the "James Corden Carpool Show": ruclips.net/video/QjvzCTqkBDQ/видео.html
By the way, a welcome back to John Lennon!
With Beatles songs it isn't over til its over there is a surprise at the end of this song that wasn't included in the video too bad
I was an adult by the time i realized Penny Lane is a place and not a woman

Listen to Working Class Hero 👍💕
The 60s were the best and worst decade at the same time.
That video is a real distraction from the song, which is made up almost entirely of visual images.
You Should Do a Reaction Video of Roy Orbison's Song PRETTY WOMAN 😉😉 Which Would Describe the Beautiful K. S. O. BEAUTIFULLY ❕
the short film isnt good. distracts from a great song.
You're right. It's just a home movie. You'd think they could've hired a better filmmaker to illustrate such a great song.
One of the great Beatles songs of all time. You should have listened more closely to it instead of watching the video. Reaction score: lame.
Feel free to feed your beast elsewhere. Manners score: ILL-BRED
