Classic Moments From The BBC's Radio Football Archive
Presented by Sir Trevor Brooking
Taken from free cassette tape with first issue of Goal magazine in 1995
I myself being a football fan of 4 years and an aspiring sports broadcast, specifically a commentator, am glad that I've stumbled upon this gem!
Peter Jones, the best commentator ever, his words painted a picture, if you couldn't be there, closing your eyes and listening to his commentary was the next best thing.
Your comment on Peter Jones is spot on. The best then and has never been bettered.
Peter Jones's commentary almost brings a tear to me eye.
Listening to the football on the radio, you just wanted to be at the game. It brought this big envious feeling of everyone going mental at the ground. Always loved it.
Great Memories of a truly great sport, Peter Jones without doubt greatest ever commentator on BBC sadly no one has ever come close with the exception of Alan Green who really can animate most games, thanks for same commentary & yes British Football is the best.
Oh, so remember Peter Jones, those late 70's/80's commentaries on a Saturday afternoon when I was a kid when they commentated on the 2nd half of a First Division match, with one commentator doing the first 22.5 mins and the change over to the second commentator, which was nearly always Jones.
TheUTubeTeamSucks yeah, I remember those Saturdays listening to BBC radio 2, so well sniff, sniff... the mid week broadcasts too on radio 2 had a real catchy theme tune that I have been searching for...
Peter Jones was simply the best. Left us far too early.
Peter Jones from Swansea the master! Never beaten or come close to, taken from us to soon. RIP the king of commentary. Alan Green can only hope one day to be half as good
Interesting to hear Brian Moore, a man you’d normally associate with ITV, during his BBC radio days in the 60’s.
Peter Johns outstanding. Hugh Johns outstanding itv commentator.
I had this tape and I have been trying to find it again for years since my wife threw it out with the rest of my tapes - so thanks for posting it. But the B seed is in my opinion the most motivational bit of commentary and music mixing in history; it is awesome. I would have your babies if you could upload the B side :-)
Peter Jones' commentary of the 81 FA Cup Final especially the Ricky Villa goal. Also loved Bryon Butler commentary too.
Thanks so much for uploading this! Loved hearing all of these snippets. Does anyone have any clips from more recent world cups from 5 live? I know England's performances weren't superlative but would still love to relive some games with the commentary I remember. Mike Ingham very much missed now he's gone.
Shame sammy mac goal against arsenal in the 1979 fa cup was not included peter jones legendary commentry
Rob Hawthorne Commentating on a Paul Gascoigne goal 1991 FA Cup Semi final 4:55 at Wembley
Jones.arnfield..co commentators brooking,etc..
Loved radio commentary radio 5 in the 80s..no live games on sky ..highlight of my evening was england qualifiers and league games(now premiership)..two commentators per game..each sharing each half..
@exorcist1998 the Rricky Villa commentary is indeed brilliant
2:36 Alan Green on BBC Radio 2 Good Goal Call of Gary Lineker 1986
I have just uploaded recordings of the 1979 and 1980 FA Cup finals. Both feature Alan Parry and Peter Jones doing commentary.
Jon Champion Commentary on here 4:19
Rob Hawthorne Brilliant goal call on Jurgen Klinsmann 2:27
King Trevor !
I don't care about not having Sky or BT. The pictures are simply better on the radio. Even Robbie Savage has his moments.
Rob Hawthorne Radio 5 Live commentating on Shearer goal from 1994/1995 Season 1:05
rob hawthorne the sky commentator is on here as well
Wasn't Ron Jones in there somewhere ? The former 5 Live commentator ?
Everton victory over spurs in 95 was the best.the toffee boys took over the semi final.london media are still crying

I had this tape, I would love to get the music track. I used to play it over and over in the car, until it got eaten!! Would love to know where I could buy it or download it.
Not sure if you've found this out but it did appear as a b-side to a Lighning seeds record in 1996 or 1997! can't remember which one though!
60's to the 80's are best, when many games were not on tv. 90's + yawwwn

Where was the commentary for Peter Withe's winner for Villa against Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup Final, eh BBC...?!!! The ONLY British team to have won the European Cup ,up to that point NOT mentioned........shocking ,BBC........shocking!!
Now I wonder why is it that I smell Manure United in this very typical reply , if ye have not got anything constructive then just keep it to yourself, Re Alan Green could be worse (assuming) LIVERPOOL are his favorites could be the manure.
Well sorry to disappoint. The reference is to those shell suited, bubble hair cutted, plastic treble boys from the wrong end of the Lancs road and their winning ways with other peoples property. And Alan Green was and is and will continue to be a twat as long as he openly supports them whilst commentating. Give me that true voice of radio commentary Peter Jones everytime. Sane, passionate reporting, enthusing his love of the game without any prejudice. Brilliant.
rob hawthorne the sky commentator is on here as well
