I won't lie to you, for me it seems that those swings simply won't cut anything. HOWEVER, it is a really clever thing to use the strings in order to prevent the kama from falling off or to use the swings to scare an opponent.

@@kbanghart Not about sharpness mate. The deal is about angle. The hardest part of using blades is doing an arc motion with no deviations which i believe in the case of swinging kusasigama would be nealy impossible to.

are you sure that kamas have their origins from farming tools? I have learned and researched that the most Kobudo- Weapons have a various origin from southeast Asia, China directly for the use of combat..for instance the sai would have been used by chinese policeman in the Fujian and Guangdong province for capturing people...maybe the eku (Oar) is simply a tool from fisherman?

Yes, the kobudo weapons were made to be weapons, but probably these weapons were inspired by farming tools or everyday objects, like the oar.
The link between farming and war is seen in other times and cultures too; a European peasant called to fight during the Middle Ages would've had little more that some farming implement, sometimes specifically modified, to fight with. During WWI, they took inspiration from agriculture's tracked tractors to build the first tanks; etc.
So, the kobudo weapons are probably a little bit of both; some are clearly weapons and weapons only, others seem to have been at least inspired by everyday tools.
