I remember going to his Santa Ana dojo to check it out, and there was steam coming out the back door. I knew instantly this was the place I needed to go to for my Karate journey.

When I was a kid, I trained under Sensei Demura in the early 80's at his dojo in Santa Ana, CA. He was patient, kind, and a constant source of encouragement. I recall how his voice would resound off the walls of the dojo like thunder, and how fierce his kiai was. I recall how when we practiced holding our side-kicks in a stationary position while bracing ourselves against a wall, Sensei would walk by us sharply striking a shinai against the floormats and demanding that we raise our kicks high. While the sound of the shinai was intimidating, he never struck anyone with it, and it inspired some of us to get our kicks higher. While family finances got in the way of me continuing to train under him, I am grateful for the time that I was able to train under him, and credit him with helping to instill in me greater a love of martial arts which eventually led me to the Takamatsu-Den arts in 1993.
Domo arigato gozaimasu, Sensei. May your ancestors and your gods embrace you.

@@thedojomartialarts , while many are aware of Sensei Demura's contribution to the Karate Kid movies, he's had numerous film credits over the years, including his role as Shihan Dai in "Ninja" (2009), a member of the Yakuza in "Rising Sun" (1993), the Hyena Man in "The Island of Dr Moreau" (1977), and a bit-part in "The Bad News Bears Go to Japan" (1978).

I to am saddened to hear about the passing of this great martial artist and even more an extraordinary human being. Who inspired many and made us all wanting to learn about the martial arts. Rather it be by his books, videos and seminars. And while a great many of us were not his students we all regarded and considered him as our sensei. Regardless of what martial arts discipline we studied. We held him in high esteem he was also a leader in self defense as well as competition. He's taught so many and too many to count. And he will be missed and his memory will live on. Through his students, black belts and instructors. He will always remain an inspiration for years to come. Rest In Peace Sensei we will miss you.

I was a long-time student of Sensei Demura. He taught me from my 5th birthday until my 23rd birthday. I visited with him about a year before he died. He was so frail, but still the same gentle soul. Moving out of town I lost touch with Sensei and was shocked and extremely saddened to hear that he passed. This is an incredible loss to the martial arts community and, indeed, to the world at large. His words during my classes echo in my head, even to this day. There is barely a week that goes by where I don't hear some piece of his wisdom guide me. He was a life-long teacher, and his teachings have lasted a lifetime. I write this with tears in my eyes. Sensei was like a second father to SO many... including me. Rest in peace, Sensei - you've more than earned it. 😞

I wish I had trained under him, I used to see him in Black Belt magazines in the 1970s. I also learned the shitoryu style, and later gojuryu. Thanks for bringing him up. I never knew he was doing Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid.

I still have a copy of Sensei Demura's nunchaku book that my father purchased long ago before I was born while he was practicing Judo in NY. Fast forward many years later, I still look and read his book not just learning but inspired to be as sharp practitioner as possible. He will be dearly missed. Fumio Demura is a legend for all times!!

Fumio passed away? That makes me really sad. I loved watching him in demonstrations perform his legendary front kick to someone's chin, where he just left his foot up there for a while before bringing it down. I never got tired of seeing that. 👍

Sho Kosugi was trained under Demura . You see Sho in those old footages. I always remembered him for his books and his weapons and movies. Fumio Demura truly is a pioneer and legend from the land of the rising sun. Wish I could have met him and other famous martial arts masters, grandmasters who moved on from this physical world..
