Will I still be able to catch up? A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons. Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback. Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use? A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length. The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training. Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style? A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all. The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have the Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing. 🗡Join the Online Iaido Training with Seki Sensei🗡 Sign Up Here (One Lesson FREE): www.patreon.com/sekisenseiiaidotraining Interested in taking Iaido lessons directly from the 8th Dan Iaido Master with 40 years of experience in Musō Shinden Ryu, Seki sensei? Thank you for the video. The Katas were interesting to see. I think the weak points of the kama must be rather frustrating for someone who is well used to Katana. Since they really don't have those. Lots of love from europe
Interestingly, in our Okinawan Karate Ryu-ha we also train Kobudo. Although we use somewhat shorter kama, the first technique shown (cross block, pull one down and hit with the other) it identical to the opening technique of the first kata we practice :)
Footwork is something that many people overlook in many sword and weapon styles, even Western ones. The ability to maneuver out of a poor position and into an advantageous one is just as important as how you wield the weapon.
When Seki Sensei begin to dual wielding sickle style, that always reminds me of Death from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, he even whistle that giving chills to Puss and audience with the goals that searching unfortunate souls of mortal, like Shinigami in Japanese mythology or Grim Reaper in Western beliefs
It's refreshing to see that in real life, weapons actually get used in the way they look like should be used. Kama are used for hooking, controlling the other weapon, and stabbing with an axe-like motion. It would be so much more interesting if they actually did this with sickle weapons in fiction. I hope artists, animators, and choreographers have been watching the videos with Seki Sensei and getting inspired.
These were explained very well, catching one's attention instantly. I found myself rewatching scenes again and again to wrap my head around how beautifully dangerous this was. Thank you!
Ah, double Kama is probably one of my favourite kobudo weapons styles. It’s just so fun to do kata with them and I have a pair for doing sparring with that I absolutely adore using against swordspeople. Great video as always!
That 100,000 subscribers goal is too easy with Shogo, Seki Sensei and his professional Uke (I keep forgetting his name)! So much fun to watch, and so informative. Now I just need to get some Kama, a Jō, chain balls, throwing knives and I'll be set! 😉😎
Yes. This channel has gone from a little over 80,000 to over 90,000 in a little more than a month. At this rate 100,000 will be achieved before winter. I believe Uke is named Sakura.
It's interesting how sickle fighting styles came aboht in both east and west, the sickle may be a simple farm tool, but it is still very deadly if used properly
Would love to see someone make a video comparing or even sparring with both Mair’s European Sickle style and the Kama and its respective techniques. I think it’s very interesting to see combat techniques for tools or improvised weapons of old. Great video, though!
This is absolutely amazing! Because I study a lot of Chinese and Thai martial arts and I love the fact that I can now learn and add Japanese styles into my styles as well!!
Such beauty and love. I wish I could come learn to flow with spirits of nature with you in person. I couldnt watch all of it before I had to maybe unwisely open my mouth. I could learn a proper form of connection with someone and restrain lethal force while holding its influence.
That is so cool, I have been using Kamas since I was very young, around 8/9. My first weapons that I got to getting a good grasp on, and have become my "favorite and specialty"" weapon. I have recently paused on using the kamas after around 10/11 years of using them to focus on Katana, I looked videos up on the XMA, to some of the 90s "Black Belt" DVDs from Century (Jimmy Pham, Tyler Weaver, and Mike Chaturantabut to name a few), and some Shinnich Chiba's (Kage No Gundan) with Hiroyuki Sanada using them in the 3rd or 4th season. Also having 2 instructors in my martial arts system that used them, 1 of them used standard kama, and the other used Rope (Flying) Kama. And in that same system we have a 4th degree black belt form that uses the Rope (Flying) Kama. Its kind of funny as to how this became "full circle". The Kamas I use are from Buki Yuushuu (Viper Kamas) and they have a dagger at the end. This video makes me want to pick them up again!
Si Yu'os Ma'ase - Thank You for making a record of Sensei - some may scoff at such presentations but many practitioners pass away without recording proper technique, philosophy and overall mindset of particular arts - although your art is specific, I would love to see such deliberate recordings of various martial arts, language, custom and philosophy as a record for future generations.
The Native American and Colonial frontiersmen developed a tomahawk and knife fighting technique, and the sickle movements are similar to some of the tomahawk movements, where you used the beard of the axe to trap or pin the attacker or weapon before countering with the other hand. In Japanese martial arts, are there any dissimilar 2 weapon techniques, where the user holds 2 different 1 handed weapons?
it would be a nice content a video asking kobudo master his opinion on two edged swords, like european longsword and its use, with differents cuts dynamics like the zwerchau, and if its possible a react to a fight of these :D

Hi Seki Sensei and Shogo thanks for showing this very interesting video which I have shared. The sickle is a weapon that I am learning as well as katana. Great drills you guys have to see it in application of what we do in Okinawan Kobudo with the same weapon very parallel to each other. The Jigen Ryu system has it to I think and there is is also the kusarigama in some other ryuha.
I love this stuff…but will people ever learn…the swordsman will never reach his opponent as he’s outta range when he strikes…it’s same in all martial arts now…we’ve lost realism we always attack short…making it easier to defend
I'd be curious to see techniques where a kama is paired with wakizashi, or maybe tanto. Could perhaps do similar techniques to tomahawk and knife or perhaps more appropriately(size wise) seax and bearded axe, albeit with a lot more hooking.
Wonderful information. Thank you for sharing. I am curious as to what sensei would say about the possibility of of the katana slicing through the handle during the X blocking motion.
If you want to be a great martial artist, learn how to dance, especially ballet. Are there any dual kama kata where you hold one sickle in an unorthodox or reverse grip? Are there any kata where you shift your hand on the weapon and "choke up" on the kama, holding the handle closer to the blade?

The symbolism and brutality of this weapon is beautiful.
What's the symbolism

So my question is, how intentional is this? Did very few stories from the Nara period survive?

Increasingly so, as 'During the Edo period' has become a meme. Amongst this new wave English Speaking Japanese content creators.
Furthermore. Much of what Seki-Sensei has taught us in his videos and superb demonstrations.
