You Never Knew the Bamboo Flute Was the Strongest Japanese Weapon

  • Komusō were monks of the Buddhist sect Fuke-shu who traveled Japan playing the Shakuhachi bamboo flute and gathering donations from people. These monks, by the way, were former samurai who lost their status for some reason and wanted to hide their faces and gather money. But there was a risk of being attacked by bandits while they were traveling. One theory says this is why the end of the Shakuhachi is bumpy, so the former samurai monks could use it as a weapon. But is fighting with a flute actually strong?
    So today, Seki sensei, the 22nd headmaster of Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu with 400 years of history, will try fighting with a Shakuhachi in various situations. Seki Sensei actually fell in love with this new weapon that he bought his own Shakuhachi after filming this video, so please watch this video until the end to find out what he likes about it so much.

    The Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu, of which Seki Sensei is the 22nd headmaster, was one of the most popular Ryuha styles during the Edo period. In our golden age, we had over 7,000 students nationwide. Today, we only have 100 students. Our dream is to revive the golden age of Asayama Ichiden Ryu while Seki Sensei is still the headmaster. And I found it interesting that the standard 1.8 shakuhachi was the length of a wakizashi. There is also an interesting observation that Wah Lum Kung-fu has a series of 'fatal flute' techniques - that flute is about the length of a shakuhachi. Also recall that the shakuhachi originated in China from which Japan absorbed so much of their culture.

    Seki Sensei reminds me of my japanese language teacher from university.
    He was a master of the naginata and sadly I've never been able to see his skills with it hah
    A suggestion for future videos:
    I know for better visibility and aesthetic you film the katas in a slow and clean way;
    Yet I would enjoy if you were able to add a 1 minute section to the videos where there is no given seme/uke status but rather a test-fight to actually see how practical the kata would be in a situation where you are unsure how the opponent acts.
    Really fastricnating to see your videos with seki sensei non the less, but that would be the icing on the cake for me ^^

    Using this specific flute as weapon doesn't surprise me one bit, aside from being known with the concept including the basket on the head thing. The flute is a strong piece of bamboo and a very unexpecting weapon.
    Technically you could even turn a spoon into a weapon, which some martial arts masters could perform even against swords. I however doubt the IRL combat in a warzone obviously, it might be a nice one vs drunk opponents.

    I see Sensei is using a Yuu flute - I have one too; it's good for travel. Note that in the Edo period, a shakuhachi was made from a single piece of madake; modern ones are in two-pieces for ease of transport. There were legitimate Fuke-shu monks. Joining was an option for ronin, but a samurai could 'retire' (a rare privilege), and become a komuso. Monks were able to cross the various han borders without 'visas' - wearing the tengai gave monks anonymity in their travels. Some were recruited by the Shogunate as spies, and they gathered intelligence as they traveled playing for alms, especially in the red-light districts where inebriated samurai could let slip sensitive information to impress their female companions. The Fuke-shu was abolished after the Meiji Restorations for having been spies for the Bakufu. Intense lobbying to the government by major shakuhachi sensei resulted in shakuhachi playing continuing in a secular environment, which is where we are today.

    The style of Ju Jutsu I practised many years ago before I fell ill used a Te bo a baton as long as your arm from the elbow to the outstretched finger tip and octagonal in shape. The shape allowed it to bite into a lock or strangle/choke and they were often called "ouch sticks" by students! We even had hollow batons that doubled as a blowpipe. The joint locks etc remind me of it, the strikes were applied by flicking the tip out using the wrist. Thank you for reminding me of some very happy and painful memories!
