As a theatre artist, one of my main motivators to visit Japan next spring is to watch Noh, Kabuki, and other forms of theatrical performances in Japan. I admire you, Shogo, for devoting yourself to the service of your country's arts and history. This is very moving to watch and thank you for sharing this priceless moment with us!

There are tears running down my face. I am proud of you, Shogo-San! I saw no flaws with this performance.
It must be very difficult to follow the timing of this style of music, which to me, is hard to predict. I know nothing of how this music is meant to be played, and to me, it seems well suited to entry into meditation, but it would be challenging for me to dance to.
Thank you for all that you share with us!

Great perfomance Shogo. You did really well. The timing uncertaintys will disapear with further practising and performing I‘m sure. I admire your dedication and effort to learn and preserve the traditional arts. I‘m sure some day you will experience how it feels to be the sensei and attend your students at their first performance.

Wow, what a great performance Shogo it was impressive to watch. It was my first time seeing noh and I don't think one could have asked for a better introduction. Shogo never looked nervous or uncertain and you could see the focus or fire so to speak in his eyes. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful part of Japanese traditional culture. Your dedication is inspirational. Here's to many more performances!

  • @suburbanbanshee

Maybe ten years ago, I went to a special performance at a local US university, by one of the famous actors who play women's parts in kabuki. I got the feeling that he wasn't super-happy to be there, especially since some people were interpreting his work as being "drag", but also because I think he was just a prickly person and was uncomfortable with pretty much everyone in the audience, gaijin or not (except the little old Japanese ladies who knew all about kabuki - you could feel him relax with them). But sometimes travel isn't pleasant, and I'm sure it was lonely to make a tour without a whole troupe along.
I think you and your fellow students, and your teacher, all put across a feeling of love for the art form of noh, and of making all the audience welcome. Of course you are at home -- but performance for strangers can be scary, and we are all beginners at being your audience. So I appreciate the fact that you were all so open and courageous.
And I wish my computer speakers could do justice to how you all were making the floor vibrate with your singing!

At 13:00 Shogo turns his head in multiple directions. What does this mean? It seems important. Also, I can't believe what a chunk of sweetness Zen has grown into so fast! He's so big now, so we can see he's well-fed and much loved. ❤ Here in the USA, some people don't take their babies anywhere for the first three months of the baby's life. Zen must be about that age now.

Shogo! You did so well! I didnt realize with your earlier vids that you're supposed to dance AND sing. I hear thats sooo hard to do with other modern singers.
I do have a question though about plain singing. Does traditional singing mention ranges like other singing, like alto, tenor, or bass? I know your voice already has some nice low tones but are those who are cursed with higher voices supposed to be trained to go lower?

Thank you for your comment! There is no difference in pitch. We learn to sing in a way that makes the ground vibrate.☺️
