  • A report about a bid to save the Manxman ferry in 2008, which unfortunately was unsuccessful. It is understood that the Manxman remains in dry dock but the owners will probably scrap the vessel if a buyer is not found.

Sailed many times om this and other wonderful Manx ferries. I saw the Ro Ro berth being brought in, sad, very sad day. The Ben the Orry the Lady all wonderful ships in a wonderful exploring time. The Saint Ceriol ( is that how it is spelt) going to Ireland.
One thing.....Douglas Crebbin Faragher, the teacher of Manx Gaelic always said the legs of Mann should always be....."When looking North. The toes always point to the setting sun" This is the case of the Manxman, but not seen in too many places.
I wish you good fortune with the project. I am an aged Manxman and totally skint but appreciate your work

Did many a June trip on this ship, Manxman, to the'TT in the 1960s.
Bikes and a car, a Morris Mini Cooper, girlfriends and mates.
Usually the bikes lashed together on deck.
Very many memories of another happier + better time.
Last saw it laid up in Glasson Dock, Fylde coast near Lancaster, no idea what year, 70s ?.🧐🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Such a shame they had to break her up she was a great ship last of her kind R.I.P SS MANXMAN it saddens me to think they just left her to rot in some grubby dry dock when they could have saved her & made the money back they could have spent to restore her to her former glory by doing day trips to the Isle of man, or just have her for pleasure cruises around the UK from port to port or they could've restored her as a floating museum. Yet another part of history lost thank's to government ;-(

That's the King Orry at 3.12. And the Lady of Man quayside. She was considered pride of the fleet being at that time the biggest steamer built for the fleet and still the fastest at 23 knots. One year I was on the Mona's Isle Belfast bound when a dot in our wake quickly grew to be the Lady catching us up. She sped past us turning north and disappearing towards Ardrossan or Stranraer. She cut the water like a destroyer.

Memory only live in the ones who knew her, after that they are lost for the rest of time. Keep a heritage going and pass on ones memory's to the next generations.

With our heritage steam railways being so successful, it's sad that we can't do the same for steam ships as well ! :-(

What a huge loss for maritime history. 😔 Almost the same thing happened to the ocean liner SS America which was being towed to become a floating hotel in Thailand, but things didn’t go according to plan and she was tragically wrecked off the Canary Islands. It’s a shame that all this history has been neglected only to be destroyed without any second thoughts.

I sailed on her in the late 60's from Ardrossan to IOM in a hell of a gale in a journey I'll never forget. I think I must have been one of the few who weren't seasick, I may have felt better if I had been. The ship was awash with the stuff 🤢🤢
Sad to see her in such a state. I did hear a story that she had been used in a movie about the Titanic, where she played the part of the Carpathia, I don't know if it's true 👍👍

Same here went to the isle of many times with the isle of man steampacket company from Liverpool and qued up in the chained loading lines on the pier .been with my parents .grandparents and later in the 70s with my mates all great holidays, I never looked forward to the crossings I just got my head down untill we got there .,but I loved to stand on deck and see the wonderful view of the isle of man as we left it.
I loved all my holidays in the isle of man and I'm afraid to go back .because like everything else it has changed .and with all the happy memories that I had of it , I don't want my happy memories of it lost to change .I can remember so much of them happy times .I don't want to lose them

Well done the lottery commision ....... spend thousands on a bed made from stale bread (humourously called art!) and let a true work of art go under the cutters torch. ................ A maritime nation ????? you'd be better off trying to preserve a sea going ship in landlocked switzerland than here !!!!!!!!!!!

According to Wikipedia, and other sources, The TSS Manxman is no more. Pallion Ship yard started dismantling her in Jan, and she will be no more by now.
What a sad end to what was a fine ship.

Wasn't the Manxman a ship serving the Royal Navy as a minelayer in ww2? I served on a ship HMS Icarus that escorted Manxman on several occasions .Anyone else remember her on such journeys Ernie

HMS Manxman was a dedicated mine layer and one of the fastest ships in the navy. 40 knots plus!! I last saw her in the late sixties in Singapore where she was minesweeper support ship. 4 of her boilers were removed to make room for workshops. On leaving the navy, I joined the Merchant navy and spent a couple of seasons on the SS Manxman. She was a lovely ship and had a great crew.

The IoM steam racket company could have saved this ship . But they are only interested in MAKING money especially in TTWEEK when they charge us a FORTUNE to sail compared to the rest of the year .
