    This is one of my favorite speedruns. It's actually a little risky to level up your health, since the health of all the bosses will level up with you, which makes the fights go on a lot longer.

    • @BigOleWords
      @BigOleWords  2 года назад +11

      Huh! I did not realize that, that’s kinda cruel!

    • @HylianFox3
      @HylianFox3 Год назад

      @@BigOleWords Having more health does make the boss fights drag a bit, but you can still do way more damage to them than they can to you. The Fire and Whirlwind attacks actually do pretty decent damage against most bosses.
      And none of the bosses (other than the final boss) will reach maximum health.

    John Carmack (OG Doom) famously said that story in video games is like story in p*rn.... irrelevant. I am inclined to agree. Gameplay is the most important category to judge a game on. More important than story, graphics, realism or any other category you can come up with. Like, ask one of your friends who loved The Last of Us, or some other game with "great story" if they played the game twice. Then ask anyone if they played SMB3 more than once. Super Mario Bros, great game, dogshit story. The question you have to ask yourself is "am I having fun?" Literally the only thing that matters.
    This game looks like fun.
    This channel is fun.
    That's why I keep coming back.

      It’s true. I randomly installed Quake the other day, as I was bored scrolling through Steam.
      Man, once I started it up, I remembered every secret and how to avoid certain traps. Story didn’t matter. It was time to kill demons!

    I think of Whomp Em as being more like Duck Tales than Mega Man because of the pogo stick mechanic. I think it works way better than stabbing your enemies just like Duck Tales. A lot of localisations in this era can come off looking like those rom hacks you get on Chinese handhelds (you know the ones, the kind that file the serial numbers off Mario but it's still clearly Mario, or put Pikachu into Adventure Island), but Whomp 'Em seems visually okay. I mean, aside from the Chinese inspiration in many of the bosses and locations. It does puzzle me, though, why they thought they needed to adapt it. The Japanese TV series Saiyuki had been dubbed in '79 as "Monkey", and, at least in Australia, was a regular staple on the ABC in reruns into the 2000s. Even if the average Australian didn't know what a "Sun Wukong" or a "Saiyuki" was, we'd recognise Monkey and his companions on their westward journey. Did Monkey just never take off in the US or something? Either way, Sun Wukong has made a different kind of journey to the west in so many different forms, surely there's a cultural touchstone for Americans besides Dragon Ball that they'd have recognised Sun Wukong by in 1991.
    Note: As a speaker of both Japanese and Mandarin, it _did_ hurt just a little to say the Chinese "Sun Wukong" and the Japanese "Saiyuki" in the same sentence. Sun Wukong in Japanese is, of course, Son Gokuu, while Saiyuki in Mandarin is Xiyouji.

    • @BigOleWords

      I’ve never heard of Monkey! Dragon Ball was my first vision of the character for sure.

    • @NoobixCube
      @NoobixCube 2 года назад +1

      @@BigOleWords I think most of the value in watching it today is in how naff it is. Dubbing that doesn't match well with the lips, or has awkward phrasing to do so, with broad fake accents to match the overacted motions, fights choreographed such that you can practically see the actors counting the beats. It's a fun watch, but don't go expecting a great deal of literary accuracy beyond the basic story beats.
      The theme song is, as the kids say, an absolute banger, though.

    i got the boss close to death then let him kill me used the item and then killed the boss. i remember coming up with this strategy as a little kid and being very proud of myself for thinking of it... also remember hating this game for that and a few reasons I forget... good reverse psychology... eventually I do hope we can start a conversation with out idoms and over used catch alls.
