    After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
    While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
    Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

      @@BigOleWords The story goes that the license holder flat out refused to allow James to be married or have children in the show, feeling that would hurt his image and the brand as a whole for him to be tied down, he was a male fantasy figure. But that was how it was conceived and written, then painted over with the uncle brush at the last minute. I like it because it's the Hong Kong '97 trick done by people with a budget and the license. "Oh, it's James' relative Jim Bond, he's just as good." Also seen on Boardwalk Empire, a magician claiming to be Houdini's brother Hardeen, who can't escape his own traps.

    Little bit of trivia: this game was originally meant to be John Smith: Special Agent, then they made it a licensed title at the last moment! The prototype's available and it's pretty much exactly the same game with a different protagonist
    I'm actually a little familiar with this game, and the SNES game of the same name! That one, a youtuber I'm a fan of, made a video on over 10 years ago, reviewing + telling the story of how he discovered it: When he was a kid he had a SNES, but the N64 was already out and had 007 GoldenEye, then he found a bootleg SNES cartridge for 007 GoldenEye and bought it, but then he played it and it was actually James Bond Jr. in disguise! That game is awful, I actually have it in a bootleg multi-cart, it also calls it by the wrong name, but I knew what I was getting into because of him.
    Later I discovered this NES version in an emulator and was surprised by the quality, but I could never get past the first level because of and not knowing how to switch items, and the god-awful sliding puzzle with the syrens. I remember it played alright, sounded good, and looked great, so despite the mentioned issues here I might play it again!

  • @jaysanj152
    @jaysanj152 2 месяца назад +4

    A damn shame you didn't go full in-depth with the rest of the item pick ups and power ups because i've stopped using the pistol once i got my hands on the Bombs which is what the game encourages you to use more often and the Shield is super good as you can tank through most of the annoying sections at the cost of not able to do anything i think ?
    And then there are the flares that'll stun everyone on screen while the big bomb just straight up nukes everything.
    I really wouldn't call this the "Worst NES Game" Like it has it's flaws but it really has a sincere charm and it sticks with its identity.
    Also i used to play this in a small tv that's also black and white and i still managed to pull of the puzzles from the first level and i am shocked how i managed to do it as a kid..

    • @BigOleWords
      @BigOleWords  2 месяца назад

      You’re right I didn’t talk about any of them! So yeah while the bomb is better it still take forever. When the flare works it is helpful. The jet pack and werewolf and shield are fine, they just run out too quickly.

    You know that something is not alright when in first level you have mines that lead to very long downfall where you can hurt yourself because you don't land on spring(that you don't know is exist) and suddenly you need to fight giant terminator with big gun. After that you have water that act like electric field which lead with tedious, wacky and time consuming jumps to all the way to ceiling that you fall. Reminding that you are still don't know how to control in this game. And this suddenly lead to water section and puzzles with high pitch sounds.
    Yeah, something is not right here. But I spend some time in this game even I don't know that show is exist(as many other adaptations of this games, expect Jungle Book). We don't have this shows in our regions, but people know this games.

    I've waited for this review for a long time as this was one of my first NES games and one of my favorites (along with Monsters In My Pocket and Mega Man 4), too bad you didn't like it. Even while all the shortcomings listed in the video are true the aesthetic and the atmosphere of the game is fantastic, it was the darkest and most "mature" game I played as a kid, much different from the Mario games on the same system (yeah, I know, I didn't play Metroid or Metal Gear as a kid), and that parallax scrolling in the jungle blew my young mind. I loved the whole soundtrack, from the rocking main theme (the game even has a hidden sound test!) to the terrifying game over theme, I couldn't get enough of this game and it took me a long time to beat it. Come on, the puzzles are not that hard! Well, maybe the one at 5:38, that one always gives me trouble even to this day, but even then I find the totem boss or whatever it is more troublesome than the puzzles. The first stage is my favorite and I'd say there are far worse ways to spend 30-45 minutes.

    This game has all the earmarks of an 80s British home computer game developer: the detailed graphics and animation, the use of big chunky "demoscene fonts", the musical style, even the janky gameplay... all came from the same culture that gave us Manic Miner, James Pond, and Impossible Mission.
    Scumlord/"Scunlord" was the leader of the criminal organization S.C.U.M., widely believed to be Ernst Stavro Blofeld himself though it doesn't look like him. A few Bond villains made it into James Bond Jr., including Dr. Julius No, who along with his fellow Chinese criminal mastermind the Mandarin from the Iron Man series was given a green-skinned makeover for his 90s incarnation. Presumably this was to avoid offending Asians, but I think that just makes the situation worse.

    Hah! I remember mentioning this one long ago on one of your videos. I think this game looks and sounds awesome, but could do with (quite) some refinement.
    You can definitely see the hand of Commodore programmers with those puzzles and some obtuse choices...like how about a Megaman-style weapon selection instead of having to fumble through your items like that, and getting hit in the meantime? And how about the very first enemy you encounter needing like 30 shots for the kill...
    Some of the graphic details are awesome though. I love all the background items animating. The lights in level 3 are dope.
    Yeah the list of flaws is long, but it's still a secret pleasure of mine. Not so secret anymore I suppose.

    The siren noise... make sure not to play that around your girls when they're in the mid single-digits. My 6 year old likes to repeat interesting noises. Like sirens, kitchen timers, etc. Last year, when the oven timer went off he'd walk around the house going "Timer ring", then repeat the alarm noise.
    And that siren noise, it doesn't sound like a siren noise to me. It sounds like a young kid's poor rendition of what a siren might sound like.

    The slider puzzles along with the constant siren is what breaks this game. The odd level design and annoying jump back can be dealt with if you practice the game enough. This game could have been great but instead feels cheap. Usually caused by the dev team not having enough time to iron things out. Same thing happened with Battletoads. The music is really good by NES standards. Unfortunately, the best theme in the games is unused. Some may recognize it on my really old videos. ;)

I think I saw one or two episodes of the cartoon and yeah, wasn't my thing at all. Anyways I certainly wouldn't rank this among the worst NES games. I can think of at least 10 others that are far worse. :O With a few tweaks via a rom hack I think this game could be decent enough.
