    MEGA MAN CLONES ►This is a look at games for the Nintendo Entertainment System that are similar in gameplay or design to Mega Man. Here I'll be discussing what makes Mega Man so iconic, and which NES games share qualities, take inspiration from, or are straight up ripping it off.

    The introduction to the NES Clones series can be found here: • What Games are Clones ...

My current setup is what I love now, but honestly I'd say start out with the cheap stuff and get a feel for everything before throwing down a ton of cash on gear you may or may not need.

    After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
    While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
    Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

    I'm happy to see Shatterhand pick up some love. It's been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. The robot sattelite guy and the system where you decide who you get plus the robot armor you could get....Shatter Hand deserved so much more attention when it was new, so if you're on the fence...GO PLAY IT NOW!!!

    To me Samurai Pizza Cats had that Mega Man vibe. It had a stage select and a stage start. Then a choice of weapons in the form of the helper cats. Boy did it have a lot of cut scenes. Spent just about time reading the game as you did playing it.
    I thought it had good graphics, good sprite expressions, and a good sound track.

      @@Nathan-rb3qp not far at all. Pre production. Because I’m a tiny bit ocd about my artistic output (I make a lot of music and visual art and writing) so I want the story of the first game to interweave in with a lot of future games I want to make, and if you don’t plan that from the beginning it’s a huge mess.

    I would love to see a hack that fixes mega Man 1. It would be awesome to do the following. Give it the tight controls of mega Man 2, get rid of the point system, change the weapons and health power-ups to look like they do in mega Man 2, and add a second chance to get the magnet beam right in the Wiley stage that requires it to progress.

  • @PureLimbic

    Power Blade is actually a localized version of the Famicom game Power Blazer. In that game, the Mega Man influence is even more obvious. The main character is even a blue cartoony robot guy.

    Definitely a good list. As a hardcore Mega Man fan(Mega Man 2 was the first video game I ever saw and immediately loved it), there's so many games like it that I've found.
    But one of my favorites has to be Mitsume Ga Tooru for the Famicom. Shooting the giant coins into smaller coins is so addictive, the gameplay is just fun and satisfying overall. You play as a chibi monk looking guy, shooting lasers out of his 3rd eye. He even has a charge shot that's a harpoon which allows you to use as a weapon and a platform. With the coins, you can visit a shop and buy upgrades.
    You should check out the Japanese version of Power Blade, Power Blazer. The graphics are different and cutesy, the game is insanely difficult, and I'm glad they changed it when they brought it over to the U.S.

    Really enjoyed this video, thanks for putting it together! Krion Conquest is a game I really want to check out now, but those cart prices on it are looking pretty brutal these days.
    It's also worth noting that Mega Man creator/director Akira Kitamura had actually left Capcom at this point and was working at Takeru/Sur de Wave, the developer who created Little Samson. I don't believe he's credited as working on the game, but I think it's safe to assume that there's a good chance he probably at the very least consulted on it, especially since the studio was pretty small.

      If you have the ability to play Famicom games, it might be better to seek out Magical Doropie, the original Japanese version. The way in which Little Samson, Bucky O'Hare, and Widget let you swap between characters and forms reminds me a bit more of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap.
    And Womp 'Em is literally a spin-off of the Wonder Boy series. Its predecessor, Saiyūki World 1, is literally an NES conversion of Wonder Boy in Monster Land from the Sega Master System.

    Okay nailed it more with the metroidvania list of NES games like legacy of wizard Battle of the Olympics Rygar clash at demonhead those who were all very similar type of games in the way that they were set up. But these games here are just a big fat stretch they have about as much in common with mega Man is Britney Spears does with William shatner the only real megaman clone on the list was the first game in that's obvious as heck to anybody that's played mega Man that it was a direct rip-off

    • @BigOleWords
      @BigOleWords  3 месяца назад

      Yeah this series is more about influence and elements than anything. The stage select, enemy types, weapon upgrades of these games are all derived from Mega Man. Totally Rad isn’t a ripoff of it, but for sure it’s emulating aspects of its gameplay and design.

      @@BigOleWords well and you know an aspect of that time of gaming that is not really talked about the blows my mind when I think about it is the NES is win games really started defining the different genres of video gaming. Like super Mario really set up with a platformer was and that was true of so many other games on the system they would define the rules of gaming for years to come. Back then there was no template to draw from they had to come up with all this on their own. It was kind of the wild West days of gaming

  • @ianbraun271
    @ianbraun271 Год назад

    I have to admit, I am a little disappointed with this one. Based on your criteria for what constitutes a "Mega Man Clone", nearly every side-scrolling action game could be included in this video, and with the exception of the Krion Conquest, most of these titles I feel don't fit into the "Mega Man Clone" title.
    In my opinion, what constitutes a "Mega Man Clone" is simple. Getting special weapons from boss battles, and using those weapons against the bosses that are weak to that weapon. Its a tried and true mechanic that worked for the basically Mega Man's entire career, or at least the Mega Man and Mega Man X games.
    One game, that I feel matches this criteria perfectly, that wasn't on this list, was 8-Eyes. The level design was closer to Castlevania, in appearance and traversal, but the bosses each dropped their weapon, and these weapons were super effective against other stage bosses. Oh, and there was a stage select.
