This was one of the hardest games I had growing up. Years later I realized my brothers and I never learned how to trigger the power ups. But we still played it so much, so clearly it was still fun.
the boat being boaty is what made it different and good. i don't think it would work if the player sprite went like a planted car or tank or directional walking kind of a thing.
This was a regular rental for me when I was a kid, I always thought the graphics and movement mechanics were impressive. It was difficult though, I don't think I ever beat it.
the 'movement mechanics' weren't anything new. It was typical top down racing game controls we'd had in many, many games before and since. This game is pretty great though. The sprite work making the boats almost feel 3D with all that smooth rotation was a big plus for me.
Rented this game as a kid many times from my local video store. Really nostalgic game for me and still great fun. Definitely not an easy game though. :)
This was one of those games that I remembered renting all the time... but couldn't remember the name to search it up. Finally I found it on Rare Replay and figured out what game it was after all these years.
Ah, Cobra Triangle. Thank you to my cousins showing me this back in the day and it only took 30 years to beat. Still a really fun game but it has that Nintendo hard factor in it.
I have a lot of nostalgia for this one. I remember getting the Power Glove for Christmas, and it was so awful that we returned it to Best Buy and exchanged it for Ninja Gaiden and Cobra Triangle. Much better value!

I rented this game from the video store as a kid back in the day and totally forgot about it until just now. Thanks for sparking this memory! It was an awesome game from what I remember!
As soon as I saw this game I thought it was immediately similar to another Rare game, Snake Rattle 'n' Roll! Not surprised they made this one looks cool.
My exposure to this game was through the minigame in the Donkey Kong Country 3 GBA port. It's basically this game with a Kong coat of paint, and I liked it
in 1989-1990 i was at my friend house on the same road as me during hot summer days. We were playing soccer, swimming in the pool, and after that we took Mr Freezes and popsicles. After that we were going in his cold and fresh basement to play this. Great memories and i still play every summer on my NES today.
I've been a fan of your channel ever since I stumbled upon your channel, TWICE! First time was when I saw your "review of Top Gear-series", about 10 years ago or so, which is a dear and special series to me and my neighbor, but I actually never got around to subscribe to your channel back then. But then, I stumbled upon your channel again when youtube brought me to your "Best SNES music"-video. THEN I just had to subscribe as I was sold! Awesome tracks from many of my favorite games. :) And since then, you've have kept making awesome retro-content while you have kept things simple and straight to the point. That I both respect and salute you for. Now, I am watching this video, and even though I am a big retrofan, it's slipped past me that Cobra Triangle and Killer Instinct were made by a lot of the same people! What a cool fact that was to hear. 2 very special games to both me and my neighbor. Thanks once again for another great video! PS: A neat difficulty curve was what we always cherished for back in the days and even today. Gotta love them challenges. :)
Man the hours I spent playing this as a kid. This is also a prime example of why having the booklet was crazy important during the NES era. I went several months not knowing about the power up system until I just stumbled on it. While this game isn't nearly as unplayable as some other games without instructions, knowing you had a spread shot at your disposal would have been nice to know. Also, amazing soundtrack. I still hum the boss music to this day.
This was one of the first videogames I ever played and I distinctly remember it as being both fascinating AND frustrating. I remember thinking the visuals and concept of the game were super cool but looking back it was definitely too hard for four-year-old-me and I never beat it lol. Fun, nostalgic video as always! I still own the cartridge from when I was a kid and this video has motivated me to pick it up again and finally try and beat it!
I always love seeing you go REALLY old school and review an old NES game. There were so many games on there that really deserve to be remembered, some of which weren't even that well known at the time, like this one.
I had this game as a kid. I still don't know how I did it, but I somehow got to the iceberg stage without the use of power ups, though that was where I ultimately hit a Game Over. U Can Beat Video games did a run-through of this title some months back -- check it out when you get the chance.

loved this game when it came out. ... i remember playing non-stop for hours listening to Metallica's 'Kill 'Em All' on cassette over and over again (i must have gotten both around the same time).

That's all to say, this is one of the first games where I clearly remember enjoying the challenge the game gave me, and I looked forward to getting better at it! I also remember looking at the game again many many years later when I found it as a ROM on an emulator. I played it for like, three or five minutes and couldn't even get past the first level. I was flabbergasted and wondered if I was even playing the same game.
I was vaguely aware of this game, but never saw much of it. The graphics are much better than I thought. I think "ambitious" seems like a good adjective as well, lots of level variety.
This was one of the few games I had to use a Game Genie and the NES Max to finish. It pissed me off so much I got rid of it which I regret now. I'll pick up a copy somewhere eventually.
Nice! It is amazing how Rareware always made some creative and technically impressive titles on whatever platform they were working on! I've heard this game can get incredibly challenging (like many classic Rare games).

Nintendo published Slalom for NES more than two years before Cobra Triangle and it was one of the few 3rd party developed black box titles and I wouldn't be surprised if they were the first Western developer to develop a NES game. They had a strong relationship pretty early on.
I've always liked Cobra Triangle, even if I never put in the effort to get all that far. Still, it's the kind of game that makes you *want* to play it more, so I know I'll be back again and again to try progressing just a little further each time.
The way the boat handles *looks* really rad! I haven't played it though so I don't know exactly how the controls feel...honestly I get vibes that it handles just a bit similar to the ship in Asteroids.

I never completed it, but young me used to be able to get pretty far on a rental weekend. Doubt I have the dexterity to make it as far these days. AHHH I can't believe I missed this one until now. This was one of my fav games because of the catchy BGMs and the extreme difficulty. In case someone decides to try it out, SNESdrunk is **wildly** understating how difficult this game is btw. 2:04 True but there is only truly 'winnable' path because any variation from it is next to impossible. I forget the order but if you go a certain way it helps quite a bit with the difficulty.

The GBA version of Donkey Kong Country 3 added some Funky Kong minigames that are basically new missions of this game, because they are just exactly like what you see it this video, isometric and all
One of my favourite NES games. I only beat it years later, I could never get past that last shark. I always found it funny / annoying that boat would sprout a helicopter rotor and fly away at the end of each level, but not use that to fly over the waterfalls in the waterfall levels.
Another great video- I didnt think it was worth playing back then but I didnt get many games I was poor. After watching though I was probably wrong, it looks fun.

2:04 True but there is only truly 'winnable' path because any variation from it is next to impossible. I forget the order but if you go a certain way it helps quite a bit with the difficulty.
Bro, I've been trying to remember the name of this game for freaking years! Was one of my favorites as a kid
Honestly, this was my second favorite NES game ever!! I think it's the most underrated NES game.
That little tune is going to be stuck with me all day!
Ah, Nostalgia.... My Grandmother had this game, I used to play it at her house when I was a kid...
Oh, so that one surfing level in Battletoads was a not so subtle reference to Cobra Triangle. Neat.
This was the best NES game I didn’t own - rented it countless times!
THE hardest NES game I played as a kid. I hated it yet couldn’t stop playing.
David Wise also did the Battletoads ost. I actually did a cover of Stage 2 from Battlemaniacs, that soundtrack rocks.
The hits keep coming
You da man
Wow! I never heard of that game before... Even though I had an NES and RC Pro Am and I loved RC Pro Am, so yeah it's something I should know before but sadly I didn't. xwx
But I'm happy to know now, I should try it! Thank you for sharing that!
Seems to be a hidden gem in the NES library, I’ve never heard about it before but it looks really fun and unique!
It doesn't come at you as fast and hard as Battletoads but it's hard, very hard.
I loved this game so much. I would play it at my cousins house all the time.
Without seeing this game before, my initial thought was "RC Pro Am but with boats... and guns", so its nice snes drunk called me out there :P
BIG YES, it's a top 10 NES game in my opinion. Rare is an amazing company.
Eh, maybe they were. Not so much these days.
i only had a handful of nes games growing up. this was one of them and i feel tense just watching this video.
Another great video- I didnt think it was worth playing back then but I didnt get many games I was poor. After watching though I was probably wrong, it looks fun.
