A big shout out to Mrs Metcalfe for filming all those drive by shots, great effort!!
Behind every great man…
She has to pay for her keep 🤷♂
It's just about the first thing I think of every time Harry does a road trip - Mrs M, every drive by, every arrival and every departure; the true unsung hero of Harry's Garage 🫡
I'll tell you for sure as soon as wipers became non-functioning my wife would have declared the trip over...
@@richardhale2117 Yup, one of the reasons I hesitate to buy a classic is because even when they've had a massive restoration, you can guarantee something on them is always not going to be working properly - and if I tried to take it anywhere with my wife, she'd indeed pull the pin as soon as there was a strange smell or the blower motor stopped or whatever - so I'd be left with short Sunday morning drives by myself.
That V12 soundtrack is impossible to beat. Love seeing more of this car.
I know as the revs get higher it starts to sing👍
This is what it is made for and more! Fits perfectly into any social occasion.
and manual gb is the thing
@@antonmk1244 wonder is it a 4 spd w/OD?
@@jamesdemestihas9904 As far as I know, this is a 5 speed regular box.
I've seen one very similar jag XJ-C 12 in a french auction, which had a 5 sp gearbox. I do remember the description.
Note I never seen a manual XJ-S 12. I guess they only existed as automatic.
I know I'm old, but a roadtrip without a good paper map is incomplete. Still my favorite car in your garage.
Well I’m not old and I love using paper maps 🗺️
Dare I say it... that green XJC is one of Harry's coolest cars!!!
Of all of your cars, the jaguar stirs my heart the most. As a kid, growing up in former Yugoslavia, a neighbor was working in Italy and purchased one. I spent countless hours sitting next to it and just looking at every inch of it sensual shape. My mom always questioned me where I was the whole day. I couldn't explain myself. No one would ever understand. My love affair with motorcycles and cars continues to this day. My sister says, I haven't changed a bit. Thank you for the beautiful videos. Keep up the great work.
I agree. I'm not a Jag fan on the whole but I've definitely got a soft spot for this car.
Interesting story. Do you know what happened with it?
@@stokovsky8483 That was long time ago. No idea. The car was beautiful. Still etched in my memory.
It's a work of art, stunning car
@@2020_vision We are fortunate to be living in this time period where we have seen the best of all classic motor cars. Kids born today will only be able to see characterless cars everywhere, that will never be a collectible classic. Harry in the Rolls Shadow Road Trip to The Arctic Circle was an outstanding venture.
Harry the petroleum retailers of Northern Ireland say thank you ))))
That certainly stretched the legs of the jag, the country roads in Northern Ireland and County Donegal are very challenging and hard on cars, a credit to the jag's restoration that it survived so well. Going to Northern Ireland and County Donegal without wind screen wipers Harry, that's very Irish.
Things that are very Irish are often very amusing and entertaining :D
Harry, it's not southern Ireland. It's just Ireland to most of us, or the Republic will do.
The XJC has always been one of my dream cars and the investment you've put into yours has made it a very special example.
Calm down country boy ..... news stories I've seen recently, it's looking more and more like Ethiopia!
@@gregtaylor6146No idea which channels you get your news from, but you apparently enjoy and even propagate their racist content.
Southern Ireland is that even a real place?
@@taw6528 Have you not heard of north, south, east and west?
There is always someone crying about racism. He is 100% correct that many once beautiful areas are looking like third world ghettos.
Locals prefer to call Southern Ireland the Republic of Ireland, great vid as usual
Thats because its name is the Republic of Ireland.Malin head the most northerly point in Ireland could hardly be called southern,
Locals call it Ireland, as that’s the name of the state. There Ireland, and there’s Northern Ireland.
I would like to give a special thank you to Mrs. Metcalfe (I assume) for the B-roll, great job on capturing Harry driving away, going up and down the twisties and all the many nature shots. I know how cold and miserable it is standing waiting for a shot.
We've met his mechanics, son, grandson, dog, etc., but can't help but wonder, will she ever make it on-screen?
I think she has... years back during one of his road trips. But, I don't think she wants to be on camera, something I can appreciate.@@andyschneider1502
As a native of Northern Ireland who has been away now for over 13 years in the Middle East, I am delighted to watch this latest upload and it brings back many memories of blasting my TVR Tuscan around the green green grass of home over a summer weekend. Love that bit of road where you climb out of Cushendall around the viaduct then looking down into Cushendun before climbing up onto the top of the moors into Ballycastle and past the 'Vanishing Lake' - that would test the suspension travel. Many a wonderful weekend spend over many years in that part of the country.
I remember going over the bridge or causway at the Vanishing lake & my dad always told me there was a ghost stageoach, we used to go looking for it !!!
@@KaneTerry plenty of ghosts and ghoulies up around that part of the country - its the banshees you gotta watch out for though.
What a wonderful weekedn it must have been ! With a TVR too. My dream ahaha !
The engine sounds and revs so smoothly it’s insane
Modern electronics are the reason. The engine was well ahead of its time and they simpley didnt have the technology to accurately apply fuel and sparks to it back then.
@@timbo19751975 And (to me) the Jag hasn't reached perfection with the fuel and sparks even now. It pops and bangs as the foot comes off the accelerator pedal. I don't hear F1 Racing Cars doing this.
I know, right? 🤤
@@peterduxbury927 He hasn't enabled the over-run fuel cut off- probably because he wants to hear some popping on the over run intentionally
...
@@timbo19751975 Well, I find that hard to believe, because this car isn't naturally aspirated, but Fuel-Injected. The ECU knows everything, the RPM of the engine, and also whether the throttle is open - or closed. When the throttle is closed, and the engine RPM is, say 3000 rpm, the Injectors should be delivering zero fuel. There are other reasons why the popping happens. Could be a slight air leak anywhere between the Exhaust Manifold and the whole Exhaust System. An over-rich mixture. I just cannot see the reason why anyone with such a fine car - would allow the popping and banging. It most certainly wasn't running like that when the XJC l;eft the Jaguar Factory as a new vehicle. Harry has spent a small fortune on the Fuel Intake System, and also brand-new (later-designed) Intake manifolds. I have yet to hear any fuel-injected car pop & bang intentionally. Let's face it, all cars today are fuel-injected. It would be a difficult thing to do - to override the ECU to make it "pop and bang". Greetings from Australia.
Harry is always welcome in Ireland ... lovely seeing you on the road.
A great road trip, very scenic. I always enjoy these long road journeys.
Your road trips are my favorite. Thinks for taking alone. Never been to Europe so it's great seeing it by car (favority way to travel).
Enjoyable watch, good to see an XJ bootlid being closed in the correct manner :-)
Ireland really is an incredibly beautiful place
Great to see the Jag in Northern Ireland! Living here, my grandfather had a V12 Coupe with a vinyl roof. He used to pick me up from school in it every Wednesday and take me for an ice cream in Holywood. As a special treat, I could have a run to Carnlough which you would have passed through.
Loved following the build of this fantastic car. Keep them coming.
I love when Harry breaks out the maps! Cred to Mrs H for unmounting the viper while on the motorway!
Great to see you visit Northern Ireland Harry. You’ve no doubt discovered by now you have quite the following over here. These roads have produced some incredible drivers over the years.
Be sure to look up Porsche Drivers Ireland on your next trip - we’d be most happy to show you a few good roads to play on! Ards Peninsula and Spelga Damn tops areas to explore to name but a couple.
Jag is just amazing. My old man had a similar one when we were younger with the twin fuel tanks being a standout memory. It was British Racing Green. Oh to have that now…
My favourite Jag. So beautiful. Driven as it should be, vigorously, spiritedly. Love that part of the world.
The south of Ireland doesn't bite, and the people are some of the kindest you will ever meet 🤗
except some of the ones from there in here kicking off because he called it Southern Ireland, they don't seem too friendly to me
@@ant2312 I'm sure all Harry's viewers in Ireland are friendly and would give him a warm welcome. The "Southern Ireland" thing is a slight bugbear for many though. There is no such place. There are two jurisdictions. Northern Ireland and Ireland. We all know Harry means no harm and is speaking from a purely geographical perspective but as we've seen in recent years, the island of Ireland is a very political place.
I hope Harry can make a future road trip where he hops across to Rosslare and travels the south coast to Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Clare to take in the Cliffs of Moher. Some very challenging roads.
Great to see Harry visit my home country. It’s an amazing place to do a road trip. Our back roads are challenging and can be narrow. The ring of Kerry is an epic drive. I hope everyone was friendly and gave Harry a nice welcome!
We visited Ireland in 2010 from Australia and the Ring of Kerry was a highlight, it’s images are imbedded in my soul.
I took a photo from the roadside , just before it's drops down into Inch.
No one believes that its in Ireland...Looks like Tuscany....The Ring of Kerry ❤
I loved my dad’s XJSCV12, but I think this Jag is just the most beautiful car
Love the howl of the V12, putting the back end out on a 50 year old car, priceless 🐐
You're a brave man taking a car to Ireland without wipers, Rainex or not.
21.44, opposite lock in the rain, old jag, no wipers… quite epic, not for the faint-hearted.
Hello. I don't usually comment but someone had to stand out in the drizzle to film a lot of that so thanks to the camera-lady. My favourite bit of your lovely Jaguar is the lack of a B-pillar.
Okay, another observation Harry, if I may? (it's the Republic of Ireland, not Southern Ireland btw 😜) My observation is that you found that whole ordeal "testing".....probably your most used word to describe the whole cross country aspect. What I didn't hear, and was surprised not to hear, was the word "fun"!
I know all those roads well, and boy you are right - you need to keep alert if you're moving on, but they are such FUN! Maybe that's why NI and Scotland, have produced their fair share of great drivers, including rally drivers?
Watching this made me wish I was chucking that Jag V12 around those roads - I'd have a HUGE grin ear to ear!
Great video! 😎🙂👍
Great sounding V12 and what a scenery.
Live on the Causeway coast and have enjoyed many great drives in my Caterhams through the years.. Early summer Sunday mornings al are when the superbikes come out to play 😉
Welcome to NI and Ireland Harry! A stunning journey. I know all those roads. Ardara and Ballybofey need pronounced a little differently! I hope you had time for a Guinness in Nancy’s in Ardara. Lovely route and enjoyed the sidewards action on Glengesh pass. A great watch and glad to hear the Jag handled those wild, undulating roads well!
Harry…I did a similar trip in 1991 but starting from Cork and working upwards along the coast….it was in a battered and bruised six week old Fiesta hire car…the previous hirer had backed it through a wall but the Company didn’t mind and told me not to worry ! The roads have not changed…it was like riding on horseback for 1500 miles!! Oddly I came across the photographs just yesterday when looking for something else…old 91 C 6931 is long gone but remembered!😃😃😃😃
Love these kinds of road trips.
Always loved the XJC. This has done nothing but confirm my appreciation. The trip looks like one worthy of a visit. Great Video.
If you have a classic Mk2 Escort rallycar in your collection, you could enter in the Donegal International Rally, Historic section, for you were either on, or very close to roads used in this iconic event, around Letterkenny, and Malin Head, amongst others. A Mk2 is made for Irish roads! Great video, and the car was glorious. That V12 howl was epic. Glad you enjoyed 'oor we island'.
Absolutely ❤️ Northern Ireland so much to do and see and inhabited by a really friendly population, Have done a similar trip recently and would definitely go back again. Jag is fab Harry 👍
It's a like for the soundtrack alone. Everything else is a bonus. Gorgeous car, lovely countries
Harry, great video, as always!! I live in Greencastle, where you got off the ferry. Thank you for the publicity for our area, the tourism, and the money it brings is very much needed in Donegal.
Donegal is the nicest part of Ireland, with the most friendly people, and picturesque landscapes.
Btw, your hotel was in “Donegal Town”. The whole region/province you drove around was Donegal.
Greencastle is a dump. And the international border goes down the middle of that stretch of water between Magilligan and Greencastle that the ferry crosses. Not right next to the Northern Irish shoreline.
@@Mike7O7O alright Mike, thanks for that. Both informative, and bigoted.
Ah! Donegal thanks for the great roadtrip video. Brings back memories of the narrow roads with “SLOW” painted on the road in the dips then over the hump “SLOWER” with a 90 on to a one lane bridge. That Irish sense of humour.
Makes a change to be able to drive a sensible speeds. The 20 mph infection that is in Britain is a disaster.
Hats off again to Mrs M, she’s an ace camera operator!
Your Jaguar XJC with your colour of choice is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. I have always been a big fan of Jaguar XJ line up until model year of 2008, but the XJC is the nicest of them all, and mostly maybe the ever best GT cars there is. Remeber when they came in mid seventies, and I still love them.
That V12 when its climbing up the rev range sounds glorious 🎵👍
Beautiful sceneries! the sound of the V12 never gets boring. What a delight having the big cat spinning, as a reward for all your restoration work and getting the engine rightly tuned and ignited!
Harry it's called the Republic of Ireland, southern Ireland would be Cork and Waterford 😂😂. Glad you enjoyed it here. Donegal one of my favourite places here.
Yes the geographic stupidity gets tiresome.
The sound of your XJC... like a more relaxed Zonda. Fabulous !
As has been mentioned by a few already, the Jag is my favourite car in the garage. The looks and sounds are perfection. Looks a great road trip, I'm doing the NC500 in a few weeks and will be stopping at the Bridge Hotel on my way back south. I will definitely look at Ireland for next year. Thanks again Harry for another great video.
The exhaust note is just wonderful.....now i appreciate the benefits of the manual gearbox over an auto of the day.
I love these V12’s, I can smell the fuel from here😀
The Lakes, old Jag, one wiper…
You’ve gone on holiday by mistake, Withnail!
Even mentioned Penrith 🤣
Came here for this comment 👍🏻
I know most people say it and I hate to be that guy but it's Republic of Ireland or just Ireland not Southern Ireland. It is correct to say Northern Ireland though. Nice road trip though and another great video. The wiper on my MGB GT used to fall off all the time but it was just a push fit with plastic friction grouves inside, crap system I have to say so I know the pain it causes when it rains and you're wipers don't do shit.
Can't but love seeing the car being used, even after a heavy restauration as you've done Harry. Beautiful car and WHAT a sound from the mechanical V12. Brillant video.
I appreciate the effort of bringing us along, it surely isn't easy to worry about filming too! What a car and what a set of roads and scenery.
What a car. What a country. What a trip. Another classic from Harry!
Driving up the M6 to the Lake District in a Jag with one wiper in the pouring rain!
Harry’s homage to Withnail and I 😅
Sir , your driving style and your reflexes with regard to counter steering and drifting are exemplary.
You will put many youngsters with their traction controlled cars to shame
In my humble opinion, this is the coolest car in your exquisite collection.
That road through Portstewart, Portrush and Downhill (where you have to go under the railway to get onto the beach) is one of my favs. I've driven it a few times over the years, twice in my Caterham (in the company of 40+ other kit cars) on a day like you had with perfect blue skies. Beautiful part of the world. In fact, the whole route from Westport, up through Donegal, across the top and down to Newtownards is just wonderful.
It's right and proper that it rains in Ireland because if the weather was predictably beautiful all the time, it'd be swamped by tourists. As it stands, if you can bear the weather, you can enjoy the jewel that it is relatively quietly.
Some of the roads are challenging in a Caterham - for sure. Dry sump essential (for ground clearance).
Hats off for the skids up the hill, the Harrismonkey must be proud! Much respect for your camerawoman, she must have the patience of a Saint! Have you tried the new retro Blaupunkts? Would look ace in the XJC…
Thank you, Mr. & Mrs. Metcalfe! If not for you, my wife and I would have missed the beautiful west side of the Lake District on our way back to Detroit (we drove up the spectacular east side, also) - We circumnavigated Iceland before three weeks of randomly driving many extremely narrow roads in Cornwall, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland - Your visit to the Giant's Causeway was a great precursor for our visit there - Love your road trips, and especially the sound of your V-12 on this trip!
For me, the Jag eclipsed even the beautiful Irish scenery. A truly glorious car and I love how Harry drives it like it’s meant to be driven 👏
An unfortunate colour though.
Stunning part of the world in addition to the truly enviable V12!
We did a similar route in February this year - managed a selfie on the Giant's Causeway with no one else there!! Great video - amazing sound from that V12.
my father had a xj12 in mid 80s what a sound track remember driving down m1 at 120 ish stunning
The Lancia and Jag side-by-side look GORGEOUS!
And the sound of that V12, you just don't hear that any more. And driven by someone who knows how to use it made it a real treat!
The big girl was surprisingly well behaved on those hairpins too.
My goodness, do I love this Jaguar. I watched most of the restoration videos. The sound of the V12 is spectacular as it rows through the gears. The color is beautiful as well. Always loved the look of these. Great road trip video and one I will watch again!
Welcome to Ireland Harry !! ☔😁 . And , as you mentioned the colour green on the Jag ; Origins of British Racing Green ; It takes its name from the green international motor racing colour of the United Kingdom. This originated with the 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup, held in Ireland (then still part of the UK), as motor-racing on public roads was illegal in Great Britain. As a mark of respect, the British cars were painted shamrock green
Great film Harry, hope you enjoyed our beautiful country. We are real petrolheads in Ireland, our roads are more suitable for rallying which is why it's such a big sport here. I wish I could have met you in person and got to see your beautiful car, I am a big fan of the channel. Thank you for showing Ireland in such a nice way. 😊
That glorious cackle of a v12... spot on
Oh man, here's another absolutely wonderful video. Beautiful car with a beautiful engine and incredible sound, driven properly on some really nice roads. I highly appreciate the road trip videos Harry, especially the ones with older cars driven in "matching" countries. It's not just the driving either, I really enjoy seeing the entire journey. The way you travel almost feels like something from a past world, I'd love to be able to do it myself one day.
I was watching this video, and on those occasions the sun came out, found myself just admiring the Jag’s paint job. Just a gorgeous colour, I think the best I’ve seen on a Jag. And it’s from an Aston.
A ev-car will never never never never ever, EVER beat the sound. Its beautifull
I have family in Ireland and some of the roads down the west coast heading towards Limerick are absolutely fantastic.
Great stuff, Harry, reminded me of my own trips up there, happy days. The Jaguar seemed to be in its element. I really enjoy the enthusiasm in your approach to the road trips, a true glass half full traveller. Great video, more of these trips, please.
Love the road trips, Harry and this was a beaut. Your carry-on attitude by not allowing the u/s wipers to ruin your trip - fantastic! Oh and the V12 sounded magnificent as well. 🤩
I very much enjoyed that. The Jag is fabulous, looks terrific and sounds epic. Nice to see you over here in our wee country. I live in Londonderry so right on the border of Northern Ireland and Donegal. I think you lose sight of the beauty when you see it everyday. It’s a nice welcome when someone such as yourself reminds me how lucky I am to have all that on my doorstep.
I’ve travelled them roads in everything from my motor bike to my artic fuel tanker but never been lucky enough to do them in something like an XJC, perhaps some day. Glad you enjoyed your visit.
O’ and Buttermere, I was there at the start of the summer. That is a whole new level of breathtaking.
Finally again a genuine roadtrip-in-a-classic report, love it. No BS on stats, figures and testroads, just enjoying car and roads. Keep ‘m coming!
That V12 sounds splendid! Great trip, thanks for sharing.
The V12 is now my favourite car in your garage. The noise, the noise of that engine is fantastic!
Another great road trip video and some good camera work from Mrs M.
So glad you came to Northern Ireland it’s my part of the world. I would love to have met you. I love your programme.
That Jag sounds simply glorious….
I just love that Jaguar and it sounds so good with that exhaust system.
12:08 "It's a bit Irish that" Wow, Harry. I think you'll find the north and south of our country were just fine the way they were and easy for all to comprehend before our lovely neighbours intervened.
Don't mind the begrudgers, Harry as we say in Ireland.
Wrong arena for that chat. The guys a car enthusiast, not a historian.
@@johncreamer3318 "A bit Irish" is a derogatory term that means "a bit stupid". It's predicated on the belief that many English people have that the Irish are not smart. It's an ethnic slur and should never be used.
@@kjh23gk I've never, in my 41 years on the island met an Irishman that would be offended by this in the context of a 60 yr old farmer/car journalist/enthusiast in passing comment/joking. FFS the guy is over enjoying and even promoting the place! Just no need for complaints IMO.
@@kjh23gk agree, visitors need to respect the people and history of the places they are visiting, and educate themselves beforehand about the do's and dont's of the culture and the use of appropriate language.
I’m from Tennessee and these 70’s XJ’s are some of my favorites vehicles and Harry’s is my absolute favorite. I see them even here in the southern states however, because no one knows how to work on them especially the fuel system people pull the v12 out of them and just put a Chevrolet 350 in them. I would love to have one with the v12s and have it sorted out.
Kudos to Mrs M on the camera detail
Must get separation anxiety from being left behind so often 👏👏
Right on time, everytime.
What a great tour in a great car. The engine sounded really fantastic. I loved the filming. Thanks for sharing the trip with us. Cheers Bob
I'm from Belfast, Harry. Fantastic video! Thanks very much for including us in your content. Loved it.
She is puuuuuring, what a fantastic engine rebuild!
This really makes me want to visit the whole of the UK. Such stunning country.
Fantastic trip !!
Hi Harry, I’m a big fan of both your channels.
Thank you for visiting Ireland.
I take issue with one thing you said. You refer to the most Northerly part of Ireland (Malin Head) as being in “Southern Ireland” and that it’s a “bit Irish”. Nobody in the Republic of Ireland ever uses the term “Southern Ireland”. I have only ever heard it used by people from the U.K.
Again, thank you for visiting the island of Ireland, your green car is beautiful and the quality of your cinematography is superb. Slán.
A fine gentleman in a pristine classic car goes on a big journey. Life could only get better if it was me.
This Jag is a tresure. And manual gearbox . Perfect.
I find polymer sealant (as for painted surfaces) works amazingly on glass (after thorough cleaning of course), without the fogging rain-x tends to cause.
Made the same discovery myself too recently. The big positive I found is that the sealants last months instead of weeks like rain x.
Which brand? And with sealant is there no smearing with wipers at full chat?
@@anonimushbosh Rejex. No smearing whatsoever. Just let it dry for 10 minutes or so and buff off thoroughly. It helps to let it cure overnight. I will add that Rain x probably has slightly better beading properties but the Rejex lasts so much longer that there is really no comparison.
One thing I’ve noticed with Rain-x is how well it lasts/performs according to how warm the glass is when it’s applied. A moderate amount of heat in the glass and it seems a little better on both counts. But the best thing about the stuff is how much easier it is to get frost and ice off the glass
So good to hear you stretching the legs of the Jaaaag through the gears. Sounds absolutely superb, you must just want to keep working that gearbox so you can listen to that glorious engine. Great trip… apart from the rain! 😆
Bravo to your spirit ,bad luck on the wipers but you carried on, that sound …magical
I love the fact that this guy is not afraid to actually drive the car.
Wow Harry, the Jag sounds tremendous, and looks absolutely fantastic. I never realized how good these V12’s can sound. Fantastic motor. Enjoy it.
Of all your cars the Jag is my favorite. Great road trip video. Great way to start a Sunday.
That car, is absolutely World Class!
Kudos to Mrs M for all those out of vehicle shots! Another stellar video Harry👏👏👏
