- After fettling my Ebay £4100 Rolls Royce, I thought it deserved a mega trip so back in February '18, we drove it 2000miles from the UK to the Arctic Circle in Norway. Here's what happened..

Harry represents how i would like to get old; rich, testing cars across Europe and owning a lot of supercars
As a young lad of 17yrs old, in 1976, my first full time job was working for a private small printing company in the North Of England, rather eccentric owner, who let me drive his RR Silver Shadow on occasions, it was like driving a land yacht, but, like Harry, I felt there was something very special about this model, the bonnet and the emblem was so far ahead. What a fantastic, memory to go with Harry to the Arctic Circle. Thanks for the memory Harry, I now have lived in in the USA (for 20 years) and there just isn't the same special type of car.
I love all of Harry's videos both farm and cars. He comes over as the sort of guy you could have a beer with. This is one of his best videos.
What a fantastic idea for a road trip. I can't imagine many Shadow owners would have the balls to take their cars on such an epic adventure, especially when faced with such severe weather conditions. It just goes to show, when looked after, what a near half century old Rolls Royce is still capable of, and how well engineered they really are.

If some big business buys them it will in the end be the end of these wonderful videos. With full freedom to do whatever he likes and with his fingertip touch for good carstuff I hope it stays here. Why not just enjoy them here. A cable to your big screen TV is all it takes if you need TV feel. And it doesn't seem to be some financial difficulties for Harry to make these...

Uh, he wasn't solo... he had his wife and a hired photographer with him. Besides, it was just a looooong, on-road journey that he took at his leisure. Nothing challenging about it except the distance, really.

Five years prior, a friend and I also visited Tromso in February. The Northern Lights were absolutely amazing, one night we were out in the barren countryside and came across a local cross-country skiing with his dog at night. Suddenly the shimmering green sky lit up in golds, purples, and yellows. Even the local stared awestruck at it for about ten minutes. The snow was reflecting gold, minus 18 degrees, and being unable to take my eyes off the sky. Just remembering that...
Oh, and you've got a torn spark plug cable boot at 18:30.
I now feel prepared for the particulars of driving a 1969 Rolls Royce Shadow from my home near Seattle (similar to latitude of UK) to the Arctic Circle. Thank you Harry.
Exactly what i like to see. An old car driven properly, what it was designed for. I found it interesting to see the oil consumption improve over time. With a good even compression reading across the cylinders, most wouldn't consider the rings to be part of the cause. I think here, with the years of light use, the engine barely achieving running temp, it is likely the oil control rings below the compression rings were gummed up. An engine can burn quite a quantity of oil without visible blue smoke in daylight, and a long run at full operating temp (at least before the arctic conditions) looks to have corrected the issue to a reasonable level, where valve guide leakage is unlikely to improve without resorting to the spanners.

Reminded me a lot of a couple of trips I made up the E6 to the Arctic Circle in old cars. The first one was in a 1966 Sunbeam Alpine roadster. I did that trip in summer to see the midnight sun and the weather was fabulous. The road not so much though. In summer the E6 is much busier and you often get stuck behind slow convoys of (mostly) German-registered camper vans. They also have long stretches of roadworks where the entire road surface is ripped up and you have to judder along for miles on muddy gravel. The Alpine ran like a dream though and I eventually ended up in Helsinki. I particularly remember the bridge at 27:33 where I inadvertently ran over what must have been the world's unluckiest mouse!
The second time was in a 1965 E-Type Coupe and took me all the way to the North Cape. This time it was in autumn and the E6 was much quieter although the weather wasn't great. The E-Type was cosy and sure-footed though and completely faultless. On both trips I stopped at the Scandic in Mo-I -Rana where on my second trip a small delegation of curious locals came to look at the E-Type.

Fantastic stuff. We did it last year on my FJR1300 motorcycle from the UK to Lofoten. An unforgettable experience.

I cannot believe that I just spent 37 minutes of my life on your adventure. Truth be told, I filled my two-week pill box with my morning and evening apothecary selections of the drugs needed to keep this almost old man alive. Much like putting oil into your Rolls Royce I set up my own lubricant of life in the pillbox. Living near the equator, I longed for the good crisp air you were breathing. The beauty of a country covered in snow isn't that it is cold, it is that it is marvelously quiet. You didn't mention that. And now as I come to your end, I find that it isn't really the end, as there is a part two. I'll watch that happily next time I fill the pill box.

I have done the same stretch of road, its a EPIC journey and Norway is a stunning country (beyond believe). Driving on Norwegian roads where they dont put salt on them is a true achievement. The tranquility and majestic scenery made my trip to Tromsø a life moment. Full summer in Norway is better though for outside camping.
I once drove one of these to Oxwich Beach on the Gower peninsula in Wales. Not quite the artic, but I enjoyed every minute of it! A fab car and it's amazing to see one preserved and looked after so well 🙏
Another of your incredibly magical, motoring videos. This one is a bit more special than usual as there is a sort of esoteric and spiritual nature to it. I found it very uplifting and moving. And of course I now must get my hands on an old Rolls or Bentley. I drive backwards and forwards between the UK and Italy (or I used to before Covid, at any rate) in my 2019 BMW 730D, which is eminently comfortable, economical and a goof tool for the job. But it doesn't give me any of the buzz I need when I drive. I, like probably most of you in this chat, subscribe to driving as a spiritual exercise on every single trip. And I think that is what exudes from your videos on the Rolls, Harry. Brilliant, simply brilliant and a wonderful tonic in these darkest of days.

pal, suv's are threats to everyone on the road. higher impact area means less chances to survive. selfish pos on wheels. set aside all that, since they are higher than regular cars, they have a higher chance to flip over.

it was a thing a decade ago. nowadays they just fuckin lead the sales.
Interestingly, years ago SUV's gave a commanding driving position over cars, now there are so many of the bloody things for a car driver all you can see is towering SUV's. I'd love to do the same with my XF, if I could afford the petrol!

I drove one of this model RR about 20 years ago and there is a magic carpet type of air about the way they glide along. Wonderful.
I’m a 67 year old Brit expat living in Romania for the last 20 years. It can get quite chilly here in the winter, usually the lows these days are around -10 C to -15 C but the coldest I’ve experienced (and driven) here, is -32 C.
I too have an old car by modern standards, a 25 year old Land Cruiser HZJ80 now with 460k km on the clock. Like your RR, no electronics and everything fixable as you go.
I just love old technology.
How much would I have enjoyed doing that trip in convoy with you in my old truck, way too much 😀

Your videos are great in providing viewers like me with your insight and knowledge on such vintage cars. And you’re a departure from other car channels by taking cars out on all types of weather conditions, exemplified by this Arctic road trip in winter. As other viewers have mentioned, these cars are to be enjoyed rather than sitting in a garage.

Pretty cool. Just like driving in Canada from late December through early March. My mom used to have Convertible Ford Galaxies (A '66 and a '70) all that with late 60's tech and snow tires. No problem.
Hi from Norway. 19:45 thats like summer roads! We locals go down those roads at 120km/h++ if we are in a hurry. Need good treaded tyres with studds. Continetal or Nokian tyres are the best for those conditions.
Well-done Harry. More travel videos please. I lived in Alaska for a year in 1969, and it brought back great driving memories.Norway has paved roads. Alaska didn't. And U were always watchful of Moose.
What a neat trip. The key to driving on that kind of ice is to not oversteer or over brake.

Despite its luxurious image, Rolls Royce are tough reliable cars!
Use marvel mystery oil if you can get some it's good in fuel and oil unsticks rings lubricant for valves
And valvoline 10 40 oil we use this in our 68 RR . .oil pan and block heater for cold weather the GM
Hydramatic transmission still works great ..great adventure for older Rolls I would trust it better than a new one we take ours on seven eight hundred plus mile trips all the time.. great video thanks
Thanks for video Harry I own1993 205 stdt restored over a period of ten years i have l lowered to gti spec with all new supension and the said 15 inch Speedlines in Metalic Grey I believe( according to D.V.LA) there are only forty left on the road Brings much joy

Those of us with long memories can remember wrapping our engines in an old blanket in the 60's

Harry has done well ending up with the Blizzaks. Here in Canada, they are considered a top-three winter tire along with Michelin X-ice and Hakkipellittas.

The world's best road trip documentary! Navigationally, to quote the 'other lot' of comedy sometime road trippers, including one of Harry's motoring neighbours, How- Hard-Can-It-Be to get the Arctic Circle in the right place? I found this problem too in extreme NE Iceland, with the coast road apparently varying in being borderline arctic or not, depending on the map.I settled for the arctic version!

We (the locals) spend a lot of money and focus on the tiers up here. That is essential to keep the car on the icy roads.
Nodded tires like Hakkapeliitta are probably the very best for icy roads. But Goodyear winter tires are also very good.
Winter tires without nodd,s should not be more than 3 years old. They are best when they are fresh.
Michelin makes also okay winter tires.

I went through Norway from Oslo to Bergen on the train at the end of May and there was plenty of snow around even then. I also drove a 1962 Lincoln up and down California and across the US when it was pushing 40 years old. It got similar MPG, which was enough of an investment at US prices. I'm wondering if Harry had electronic ignition put in after this - probably gain a little MPG besides reliability.

Loved the video Harry, taking such an old car that distance took balls … hat off to you.One small point … having spent all that money preparing the Roller why on earth didn't you fit electronic ignition & saved yourself faffing with the points in freezing conditions.

Pull out the engine, put it into storage for later when you want to sell the car, and swap in an LS1 engine from a Chevy Corvette, that's the best way to make an old car reliable with the latest of modern engine technology.
That's got to be the farthest north any Rolls has hit 100,000 miles. Nice work!
Often old cars will have more value after such trips, because they will get an thorough inspection and lots of workout - not to mention all the fresh air, pretty scenery and repair bills.

So interesting and wonderful that a 48 year old car could do this sort of journey so well. Maybe the increased oil consumption was purely down to the fact that this ex wedding car simply hadn’t been used to higher speed motorway work?

Did my apprenticeship on these grand old ladies. Arctic was no issues at all. Run forever. To be serious though they don't like being low on oil they scuff up 7 &8 cylinders

I love the idea that that car has been working hard in a boring job for 40 years, travelled no further than a local church and has finally had the opportunity to go for an adventure of a life time. The car wanted to get there & I think If that Roller could talk, it'd thank you.

The sheer audacity of taking a shonky old mk1 shadow to the arctic, no backup , no support vehicles of any kind. It's a testament to old mechanical cars that you can fix with a set of spanners, no laptop, no ecu's to reprogramme. Just an epic adventure and bucketlist stuff , well done sir . !!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏 👍👍👍👍👍

Nope, we definitely weren’t invited on this trip. There was a photographer to get shots for Octane magazine but that was only for a few days. Most of it was just Mum and Dad. I think the real credit goes to Mum for this episode. She did most of the outside shots, not sure if she ever quite recovered brrrr....

Not much money required, although it's good to have a bit on hand for the unexpected. Imagine the "adventure" you could have trying to get a Yugo up to the arctic circle. For a petrol head, that's still a fun trip - and cheap as. :-D
aussiebloke609 i wouldn't be surprises when a Yugo would succeed in doing that. Simple cars have much less to go wrong.
