    Marvelous. Ive just retired from the auction industry and indidna valuation on a RR 1970 model. Done 60,000miles. It was the oldest car in his collection. Inasked him about its history. He said he grew up in poverty in Greece and they escaped to Australia. He saw a RR in William st Sydney and as a kid said “im going to work hard and buy one”.. well he became a developer and bought it. He said he cannot part with it as it symbolises everything he worked to achieve.

Well, he got pulled by the police and being an Irishman in a Rolls in the 70s was not a good mix. I believe they suspected him of being some kind of IRA bigwig and put him in a cell overnight until his identity could be confirmed. His mate's never let him live it down and presented him with a corgi diecast mounted on a plinth which I still have to this day. 🙂

      That really is, must be, an iconic car. What coach builder was it from? As you call it "Rolls" and leave "Royce" out, I would turn this around. Rolls died in 1910 in a plane crash. Harry, when you talk about the suspension and ride quality I have to mention something which is relevant from my teenage years. My Father worked for AP Lockheed in Liverpool which specialised in hydraulics. The company were working with Rolls Royce to develop suspension for the Shadow replacement, the Silver Spirit. The test car was a maroon Shadow, the boot being full of tanks and pumps etc for the new suspension- test mule spec. The ride was unbelievable but the car once parked would sit down which Rolls were not keen on. But the funny thing I remember was a solid oak boot stay to prop the boot lid up. It had been machined and sanded before being stained and varnished. It was almost as good as the interior wood! One last thing, the test car was without the radiator grill and Spirit of Ecstasy….. why? Because it was a mule was the official response! 😂 I enjoy your channel very much 🥂

      No, it is the engine. Why waste hydrogen by burning it in a engine with low efficiency and some bad emissions (burning never will be completely clean) when we can further develop a fuelcell for mass production.
      A combination engine will never have the efficiency of a battery or a fuelcell type technology.

    So happy you are championing narrow cars. Manufacturers should be forced to reduce car width to keep traffic flowing and stop selfish drivers parking on pavements. If you reduce width you then force a reduction in height (to manage centre of gravity / handling issues) which leads to reduced kerb weights, better economy, reduced tyre wear etc.
    Narrow cars - it's the future! 😇

      I think Harry said that the purchase price was actually £4,100 (on e-bay). I totally agree with you that the car suits the old London streets. Although in the 1970s I always thought a RR was an enormous car, it goes to show how big 'average' cars today have become. I passed a brand new Audi A6 estate earlier today and God, they're wide. Reminds me of my parents shadow bought back in 1980.
    It was a 1967 (TYK 22F) with air conditioning and a metal sliding sunroof (apparently a very rare and expensive option when new).
    It had picnic tables on the back of the front seats and a 4 speed auto (later changed to a 3 speed with the larger 6.75 engine) from builds after1970ish.
    I can confirm (because I had to do it) if you lock the boot lid, then ace the car key in the boot gutter rails d slam the boot closed,you have just locked yourself out of your car 😂
    However,if you remove the spare wheel,you will find a hole in the boot floor (so your mechanic can check your spare tyre pressure without lowering the spare,assuming you lined up the valve with the hole) and it's big enough for a teenagers arm .
    So
    Laying on my back, with a socket set and spanners,I found (after 3 hours) you can undo the boot catch from inside the boot, completely blindly and open the boot to retrieve the key 👍

I am a consulting engineer and apart from a few defence things in the last two decades most of what I have been working on has been net zero related. We will get there but we really need to be focussed and working down a list of subjects driven by a true impact curve. We need to mobilise our efforts on the things that really need addressing not virtue signalling nonsense or tokenism. Coal fired energy, Heavy oil ships, haulage and air travel all need sorting before going vegan or avoiding leather or destroying perfectly good petrol cars for new electric ones.

    The Shadow is one of my bucket list cars and I hope I can get one before the prices climb away. I think they have been underrated/underappreciated cars, and slightly looked down by some who seem to think it was Rolls Royce selling out. As I watch this video, I cant help thinking there aren't many cars over 50 years old that would be happy tackling a rutted lane in the Cotswolds followed by a cruise down the motorway and then doing battle with London's traffic - all with zero fuss and keeping the driver relaxed and comfortable. So it seems Rolls didnt sell out, they modernised their construction and produced a very capable car that can still more than hold its own against modern traffic over half a century after it was launched. Thats amazing. Great video of an epic car, thank you Harry.

I also lovingly restored her, maybe a misguided adventure I took at the time however it was something I felt I "needed" to do. Well, 1 1/2 years and $50,000 USD latter, she was complete & better than new, and I was off my rocker and on to my next Rolls! It's an addiction.

      A friend of mine has a 68 Silver Shadow, I have borrowed it a number of times, and it truly is a spectacular car to drive. No vibration at all from the engine, and you can’t hear it idle when you’re inside. The driving experience can best be described as «wafting» rather than driving, and in 1968-70 it must have been stupendously superior to all other cars of that time, except maybe the Citroën DS, which another friend of mine has, incidentally. I love driving the Shadow! It does equal most modern cars, in my opinion.

    Twenty-two years ago I owned a 69 Silver Shadow 1 and watching Harry's video brought back the memories of the joys of motoring. My recollection of the suspension set-up was that Rolls Royce incorporated air suspension from Citroen in the design and manufacture of the Shadow 1, but in practice the front air component was usually disabled as it made little difference to the ride-handling. Also as a throw-back to the horse and carriage days, body dampers which looked and felt like high density Steelo steel wool scrubbing pads were used - but the end result was superb. The 6.25 litre motor with Air-Con had oodles of torque. A great vehicle - it was difficult not to smile when driving!

    • @harrysgarage
      @harrysgarage  2 года назад

      Interesting comments. I'm enjoying the Shadow more and more, there really is no other driving experience like it. I'm interested in your comments regarding the 6.25, which continues to surprise me with the amount of go it has! I'm afraid it's using a bit of oil and I should do a rebuild on it but it's expensive. An alternative is to fit a secondhand 6.75, which would be a third of the cost but I'd really like to keep it 6.25. Maybe I'll just buy some more oil and keep a reserve supply in the boot!

    • @JohnLee-tf2tw
      @JohnLee-tf2tw 2 года назад

      @@harrysgarage The only times when my Shadow 1 exhibited signs of excess oil consumption was after a long downhill valley run at 110kph on zero throttle, when I floored the accelerator pedal to glide up the other side of the valley. There would be a cloud of blue smoke in the transition from zero throttle to full throttle, but I reckoned that was sociably acceptable - so no problem!

    Great stuff Harry, as ever. Particularly chuffed that you gave Mr Tyson a nod - my beloved Granddad (a well-known joiner in the area), was a site foreman for Mr Tyson in the 50's/60's. It was a 'feather in the cap' to work for Tyson's. A man, my granddad used to say, who would check sites most days to see that nails were't thrown away, but counted! Counting nails...but the quality of his building work was exquisite. Better than today's breeze-block/weetabix construction.
