When we travel to Kingston from home Port above the Waterford flight on Mohawk we usually stop overnight at the troy docks and hit the bars and restaurants
The lock is after Troy, so we didn't go through on this trip. I have a whole series of vids on going through the locks. Check it out on my channels playlist.
The Troy dock is a short walk from Monument Square, which has quite a few restaurants, and was the filming set for parts of The Gilded Age, HBO's new series. The Bloomingdale Brothers store was set on Monument Square. Just off the square, you will see other homes that were featured in the series, standing in for NYC and Brooklyn. Washington Square, further south of downtown, was also used for the filming. Up the hill from the downtown nieighborhood is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. There is a model train layout on campus that was built by the engineering students, and is open to the public on occasion. There are music performances at EMPAC on the RPI campus, as well.
