My favorite Hitchcock film. Based on the play by Patrick Hamilton, which I'd love to see staged. And keep in mind that the Hays Code also required queer-coded characters to be either villains or to die (or both) because consequences for that lifestyle needed to be shown.
Yikes. Crazy comment from lary. Great review of the film and some fun insights on Hitchcock and his persona. Good conversation on the gay characters. That was a big issue for Hollywood. They were always trying to appease the mid-West audience. We could tell who was gay but didn't care. Not such a problem in New York (the first Hollywood) when these movies were made.
I saw this at a film fest in 1975. I really appreciated the staging and the acting. Never cared for the concept of the story, but it's a well-crafted movie. Probably used in film schools everywhere.
