Anyone still watching this in 2023, you can get a rebuilt 128GB refurbed iPod 5.5 for $130 or a 6 for $170. They still sound incredible! And with CDs now being sold for $1 at thrift stores you can load your iPod up with a month’s worth of near loss-less tracks for a penny a track (or less). So much better sounding that streaming music!
I've owned both and currently own a 5.5 and a newer "nano" but I'd recommend the gen 6/7. People say the sound is warmer on the 5.5 and while it is, slightly, the sound is more accurate on the 6/7 and the amplification is cleaner. With the 5.5 and low sensitivity IEMs there is a little bit of background hiss where the 6/7 is silent. And because headphones now have more accurate/better bass than they did in 2005, the gen 5.5 actually ends up sounding a bit sloppier. However, the 5.5 staging sounds slightly better in my opinion, while the sound in the 7 is slighly better. I'd also recommend the 7 because it's straight up faster, has a higher song limit than the expensive 80gb 5.5's, and it has cover-flow and looks prettier. A nice 7 does cost a bit more though, but for good reason.
@@escapetherace1943 I really can’t detect any real difference when using my mid- level head phones, but I’m sure you’re right. I prefer the 5.5 because it is easier to open up to change the battery, but all of my iPods (Nano 5, Nano 6, Mini, 5.5) sound really good to my uneducated (and much abused) ears
Just a quick response although I realize I’m about 3 years late coming across your little comparison video here. First off, I totally agree with everything (almost) you mention here. My one slight disagreement (admittedly rather pedantic) doesn’t even pertain to the iPod Classic. Rather, it is your opinion on EQ. Now this applies much more to records (I hate calling records “vinyls”). As you may or may not know, about 50 years ago the RIAA specified a standard EQ curve that became the de facto standard for mastering LPs. This was done for 3 main reasons. (1) the higher frequency rolloff created a very “bassy” sound. (2) to try to standardize the sound. And (3), making the groove more uniform made mastering records more resistant to skipping. The problem was that the result was an extremely flat frequency response. You would be fairly accurate in comparing it with compression. The bass and treble were set to null; the mids were a tad above null. So, in order to hear the record the way it was meant, you had to bring up the bass to around 2 o’clock, mids to null (12 o’clock) and treble to around 3 o’clock. Interestingly, many old receivers of that time like Fisher actually had a switch that automatically converted the RIAA EQ to match the proper sound as it was meant to be. Now keep in mind, this only pertains to records, not tape. I just wanted to get that out there because it’s just a common myth that you shouldn’t have to adjust the EQ.
I bought an iPod 5.5 enhanced for 30 pounds with a slightly dodgy hard dive etc. But what did I do :) ripped it out, bought an iflash! And it now has an SD card for storage, longer battery life included :) love it
honestly the cost of big data plans coupled with the adsorption of data by streaming music as much as i listen to music on the go means that isn't an option, so i picked up a 60gb 5th gen as my LG G2 has no SD Slot. considering i only paid £20 for it with a broken screen, bringing the total cost to £32 after fitting a new screen, i think i got a pretty good deal
As a student I also need music what I do is got me a 8 gig 6 generation I pod nano because it has a fm radio built in so I am able to listen to the local channel for free without data and for podcast I just connect the iPod nano 6 generation into my computer before leaving and update the latest podcast and listen to it offline
I also got this problem. Since my old ipod died I was trying to listen with various phones and always put a side my headphones after a first listen. One of the phones even mismach album track order, that ruins all the mood. Now I just bought Blackberry passport and also an ipod classic. I would give Blackberry a shot. But it probably would be pretty quick comparison when I sync an ipod.
I enjoyed your voice and thought the consumer porn was very funny, I just wish everyone would stop calling the iPod Classic 6G a 7G Apples last iPod produced was the iPod Classic 6G it had three major releases that ran from 2007- 2009
I got a 160gb 7th gen this week for a reasonable price (90$) I'm please with the sound quality. For my taste, a precise sound is best. I know, a touch of harmonic distortion can be pleasing. This is why maybe I will give the 5.5 gen a go. But I think the two of them is a great buy.
MrVitalic85 how did you get it that cheap? I got mine off ebay in January in like new condition, with 3 cases and the box. It costed me $330, and It was the best deal I could find!!!???
O Khan Its a guy at my workplace that had installed rockbox on it. The ipod was having issue with syncing. I just reinstalled the os with itunes, and voila. The player is in almost brand new condition. At the time they were selling for 600$ on ebay… :) I'm planning to get an 5.5 too ahah…
O Khan yes, and its nice to have a dedicated player. I dont like to put tunes on my iphone… and the battery life is huge. And I'm the kind of guy that still use his 10 years old mobiblu cube at the gym.. ;)
Modding the iPod Wolfson Gen 5.5 to 512 CF or SDX and 3000mha battery can be done for well under $300!! The 7th gen sound quality is not that good. And at 160gb is still too small.
Saw your comment on every video about iPod differences, what makes me think that you are the only one who say that it's a myth also taking into account that there are no proof that you are"sound engineer"
Ca Reem And just how would someone go about proving they’re an audio engineer, aside from scanning my degree and showing you my name on the internet? To think that an older iPod “sounds better” or is more “realistic and 3D” just because it has a “special DAC” that reads 1s and 0s more accurately is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. It’s laughable. I won’t have any trouble sleeping at night if an audiofool thinks differently. It’s like believing in Global Warming. Some people just believe stuff based on heresy without ever having done the research.
@@omgwtfpwnd ok I'll explain you, just to be sure that you will not spread this shit all over other videos. Wolfson dac has built in stereo enhancer and 40mW per channel output power into 16om/3.3v, while Cirrus logic has 20mW per channel output power 16/32om /1.8v. If you're "engineer" than this data will be enough for you to understand why people say things that they say about differences between iPods. All data is free you can check datasheets in Google
Then don’t fucking watch!! I hate seeing these comments complaining about oh this video is too long, well get the fuck off of the internet them!!!! If you don’t like it stop watching it!!! Jeez!! Sorry PTH, but even some gaming RUclipsrs get this comment a lot from the same idiots who still click on the video and they don’t even like the content creators!!! 😒🙄
I can fit all my iTunes songs and videos in my 256GB iPhone X, and if I want uninterrupted playback, I just click the do not disturb button or put it on airplane mode. Problem solved.

Yep I lost my 7th gen classic when I moved. I’m gonna buy another off eBay. I’m always gonna keep an iPod on me 👍🏽
This is what im currently doing, I hate streaming and love owning music. People around my age look at me weirdly for it haha

IPOD 5.5 80GB IS SIMPLY THE BEST SOUNDING IPOD! I LOVE IT.. POWERFUL BASE WITH AWESOME CLARITY. IMHO
I still like my 160GB iPod classic 7. The sound quality is fine
O Khan There is NO 7th G!
@@user4086the “7th gen” is really just a 6th gen with a bigger hard drive. It should be more of a 6.5 gen.
You EQ based on personal preference and the headphones you’re listening on.

yea i saw the beatles...I want a 5.5 so bad. I have a 6GB ipod photo
So, who’s better in sound quality? Which has more bass?
I got my Ipod 160gd 7thG with box, headphone ,cable, everything plus my Ipod looks like its never been used like at for only 150.00 bucks

THE IPOD 5 or 5.5 DOES NOT SOUND “BETTER” THAN THE 7TH. THAT’S JUST A MYTH STARTED BY A BUNCH OF LOONY AUDIOFOOLS.
