I replaced mine without pulling the engine or manifold, not fun but did it… it took about 10 hours on a R8 2014 V10

V8 can be done without removing engine on the older ones. A bit finicky to unhook the ac pump driveshaft but doable. But book time is book time

I've read about that A/C compressor failing multiple (4+ times) even in R8's w/ low miles. Which is insane, given the car's cost and near-hand-built construction. Does Audi sell a better-manufactured version of the compressor that doesn't consistently fail? Have they updated that part? Can you permanently remove the compressor and just run the car without the A/C? And what does it cost to put in that new compressor? $5000+?

A bit late now, but this video I found shows how to change it without removing the engine...

Unless you can't do that on the V10 ?
