    Well I've been educated! You could certainly see the wood saturated with the resin! Lovely footage of the heathlands as well. Very enjoyable and informative! All the best - Martin

    Actually you did a good job explaining fatwood however every time you're saw bent when you were cutting I cringed waiting for it to break. 😄. 🇺🇲🤠

      Hey Billy! Haven't heard from you for a while. I was thinking about you the other day and hoping you were alright done there! 😁
      I really enjoyed going out looking for fatwood. I've used it loads of times but only stuff I've bought so it was fun going hunting for my own locally. I had no idea if I'd even find any so this vid could have been an epic fail but found some really good stuff. Also an area close to home I've never really explored. So all good!

    I’ll have to come down and have a meet up, I’m over in Pompey, spent many a year camping around Aldridge Hill outside Brokenhurst

    • @hikingwithrosy

      When I was in the scouts years ago we camped at Ferny Crofts. It’s a site owned by the Scouts near Brockenhurst.
      I think the New Forest is ideal for scouts really coz there’s such a lot of open land to hike over.
      When we’re allowed out again we’ll arrange something if you want to come over for a hike.
      Just watched your intro vid. I know exactly what you mean about using the stuff you learnt in the Scouts all the time. Feels the same to me.

  • @wendingourway

    I have a question...does fatwood have a best-before date, does it expire? Why I ask is that I have cut many branches off a pine tree from the front yard and I have all the thicker branches standing outside against a corner of the house...so I guess it is more concentrated the closer the cut is to the trunk...hmmm...you learn something new every day...thanks so much!

    • @hikingwithrosy
      @hikingwithrosy  3 года назад +1

      I don’t know for sure but I imagine it would slowly disappear as it dries out.
      I think the process for fatwood being created in the first place is that a branch dies or breaks off, but the tree is still pumping sap up the main trunk and so that sap goes out into the broken branch and then instead of going on out into thinner branches and leaves it hits a dead end, and so builds up.
      That’s my theory anyway! I have no idea reallly! 😄

      @@hikingwithrosy Nice one. Yeah theres lots of pine along that coast from us down to Bournemouth isn't there.. I want to get a few camps in when lock down ends. Plenty of little tracks off into the forest between us and Lyndhurst.
      Hopefully we'll be allowed out again very soon 🤞..
      Keep up the great vids. They are very good 👍

    Wow the smaller branches have so much more! I suppose maybe they’ve been dead longer? I didn’t know about fat wood before watching this video, so do you just chop it up small to use to get a fire going? Or does it have to be really thin like you said with a flint and steel. Also, if this was filmed today I was probably a few minutes away from you on a walk!

    • @hikingwithrosy
      @hikingwithrosy  3 года назад

      Hi Beth, not sure why the smaller branches have more. Might be like you say due to time or might be something more subtle than that.
      When you buy fatwood it comes in short fairly thick pieces, then you can easily split it or shave it to the size you want. You can just use it as kindling, so split to thinner bits and light with a match or lighter, or you can shave it and light with a spark if you want to go full on bushcrafty! 😄. It burns slowly so more like an ordinary firelighter you would buy than a random twig.
      I actually filmed this last Sunday. I’ve noticed a lot more people out in the Forest at the moment, especially at weekends. Have you noticed that? Where abouts roughly were you walking?

      @@hikingwithrosy i see i see, thanks for the advice I reckon I might go out and forage some soon!
      Since the first lockdown I saw a huge increase of people but I think with the third it’s gone down a little bit. But I haven’t been getting out there as much as I use to so hard to say!
