    Just like with anything new, there is a learning process...I too was amazed at how fast it went up in flame...sure is a good show starter...good to see these options being tried in "real" life!

      Yeah, I’ve never seen anything light so easily! 😊
      I wanted to give it a good try out. I’ve still got a load left so might have another go at some point using a different approach.
      Thanks for watching! 👍

    Hello Mark, the kapok works a lot like dryer lint, I add a cotton pad with petroleum jelly on it to slow down the burn, just like the birch bark. Both useful and entertaining thanks for sharing All the Best ~John

      Thanks John! I knew you guys would have experience of stuff like this!
      Glad you enjoyed 😄

    I suppose were you adrift at sea and happened across an Island you could shred your vintage life vest, pull out the Kapok and use a lighter to get a fine fire ablaze. I hope all this made your tea taste better! Thanks for the video.

    Good stuff Mark, reminds me of bull rush fluff, never used it as a tinder tho. Interesting stuff though. Rob

      Yeah Rob, someone else said bulrush. I prob should look into how people typically use that. 👍

    Birch Bark for the win every time! LOL. At least the KAPOK is good for catching a spark. Used in conjunction with the Birch Bark, it was a pretty smooth system!

    Hey Mark I was gonna say you need more brittle kindling. What I call tinderling then the kindling. 1-2 up and away. There was suspense in that. All the best. Mark

    • @hikingwithrosy
      @hikingwithrosy  3 года назад +1

      I know Mark. When I was editing I did think that stuff was too big. Should be tinder to match sticks to pencils then you’re away. But TBH, that kapok is so crap it still wouldn’t have worked.
      Fire lighting is not as easy as it looks. It’s something you’ve got to learn. There are a lot of things in life you could put a lot of time in to learn. Lighting a fire is one of the very few I’m happy to spend as much time on as it takes.
      Thanks for coming back with some more stuff Mark! I’m always up for hearing your thoughts! Peace brother 👊

    🔥🔥🔥🤠, Aussie 'paperbark' - Melaleuca tree bark- it goes up like a frenchmans hands at the first sight of a German uniform! 😜👍.
    Birch bark & bullrush head if I was firelighting in Europe👍. Kapok, grass, dead nettle or raspberry stems then your twigs🤠🔥👍

      HaHa! So politically incorrect! I love it! We can prob even get away with that here now we've finally left the dreaded! I need to get out and play with more stuff for sure. So much nature, so little time! 😀

      Know what you mean about the tyranny mate. Pretty sick of European politicians constantly slagging off the yanks when if it wasn’t for them and the rest of the Allies there wouldn’t be any European politicians! We’re best out of it I think.

    Looks an acts like Cattail.. You can use can use it in a bird's nest or you can take Vaseline or petroleum jelly whatever name you'd like to use and put a little bit on it.. the petroleum jelly will make it burn longer..🇺🇲🤠

    • @hikingwithrosy
      @hikingwithrosy  3 года назад +1

      That’s a good idea adding Vaseline. I’ll try that. I’ve seen people use cattail but not tried it yet. We have bulrushes here which I think is the same as cattail or at least very similar.
      Thanks man! Great comment 👍

  • @StansOutdoorAdventures

    If you get chunks of it and dip it in melted candle wax or melted vaseline then it will stay lit for a long time

    • @hikingwithrosy
      @hikingwithrosy  3 года назад +1

      @@hikingwithrosy Great.. I've not done the candle wax one yet but I'd probably leave a bit of it clean to catch the spark to start to melt the wax. The vaseline one just takes a spark 👍 Good luck.
