  • Fire lighting is an essential bushcraft and survival skill. In this video I collect birch bark from a dead birch tree and show you how to use birch bark to light a fire using both a lighter or matches and a fire steel. The birch tree has many many uses and in Bushcraft is very well known for its use in fire lighting.
How to light a fire using a ferrocerium rod
    1. Collect birch bark from a dead birch tree
    2. Use a knife or the striker part of your fire steel (ferrocerium rod) to scrape the outside of the bark into small shavings and dust
    3. Scrape a small amount of ferrocerium into that pile and light with the fire steel
    4. Add strips of birch bark to extend the flame
    5. Transfer to fire place and add kindling and fuel
    * never take bark from living trees as this will damage the tree.
*protect your shavings from the wind
*always clean up and leave no trace
