Two big reasons why modern Disney movies are failing:
1: Most of their properties rely on audience nostalgia, but you can't get nostalgic about something that refuses to go away.
2: The lack of original stories, replaced with remakes and spinoffs, is because coming up with new and original movies requires creativity, and investing in them requires taking a financial risk.
Disney is a corporate bureaucracy, and is thus capable of neither.

People have seem to forgotten that the Pixar company was formed by former Disney animators who formed their own company. To say that Disney “acquired” Pixar basically confirmed Disney’s strategy of buying out any creative competition. This is the basic model of Disney.

    • @franknbeans8904
      @franknbeans8904 Год назад +16

Acquiring instead of creating seems to be slowly doing them in now. Their best eras and movies were when they were smaller and had much more competition, because they had to hire the best and to take creative risks. Now they're just doing rote films and shows with no creativity, their movies are overproduced and dull, and they are destroying most franchises they touch.

It's honestly very simple. Competition breeds innovation. Disney itself saw that back when Don Bluth left the company, proceeded to hand Disney its *entire* ass at the box office, and then Disney made better products in response.
But now that they own everything, there IS no competition. They have no reason to try and do better. Until they stop owning everything, we will get nothing but stale crap no one wants to see.

The company I am talking about is Nintendo. They realized that the strategy of crapping out as many low-quality games as possible for the sake of profits was what destroyed Atari. Note that a third-party game maker is only allowed to make up to 5 games per year for a Nintendo console. This mindset helped Nintendo a lot. The new Zelda game (Tears of the Kingdom) was released five years after the last one (Breath of the Wild). The buildup of hype and the advances in the game engine has led to elevated sales. On the other hand, Capcom released a new Megaman game every year, with little improvement in each subsequent title. This destroyed what was once a promising franchise.
Disney could learn something from Nintendo.

Disney went from getting everyone excited to the next movie to a point where whenever people hear that a movie is being produced by Disney, fans fears that something might go wrong. If people fears your product instead of being excited for it, that's a bad sign. Not to mention that went a movie or series flops they now blame the audience instead of keeping their mouths and fingers shut and rethink what they did wrong. Either they learn from their failures and clean the brand's image or continue to insist on getting politically involved and collapse like a tower being demolished.

I don't think over saturation is really contributing to the downfall of disney. If they were pumping out good movie after good movie, I'd be out there with my kids all the time watching them. The issue is that even ignoring the social issue they feel the need to spam, the writing of these movies is just hot garbage and they actively hate the people who the movie is supposed to be written for. Disney has been down this road before though. They just need to have the guts to clean house and get some people in whose focus is on writing a good story, not using a kids movie as their personal soap box.

In regards to the large push of diversity/social justice themes in a lot of recent Disney properties, I think it’s important to remember how political opinions, social issues, messaging about diversity, etc., has always been incorporated into filmmaking, or any sort of media. I think the difference between then and now is the capacity in which they do it. I consider myself a film lover, and I love seeing subliminal messaging, or the thoughts/opinions of writers/filmmakers put forward in an artistic way. Even if I don’t agree with the point they’re making, I can still appreciate the level of thought that goes into those messages being put forward in a meaningful and interesting way. Nowadays, it feels like every Disney property does this big song and dance about diversity and inclusion, and it repeatedly slaps you in the face as you watch anything they make. It’s like I’m being talked down to for an hour and a half during each movie I watch. I have no problem with race or even gender swapping of characters if the actor/actress is the best person for the role and genuinely fits a character really well. You brought up Zoë Kravitz and Jeremy Wright in another video as their roles in the Batman. They were both outstanding, and genuinely fit their roles extremely well. But often it feels Disney casts minorities just so they can get articles written about them and garner social points, even if that actor/actress doesn’t fit the character at all. Its like they have a checklist for every movie they make to include minority x or gender y and it’s not only lazy, but outright putting pandering before putting out a great and passionately made film.

    • @bodybuild5975
      @bodybuild5975 Год назад +5

Hit the nail on the head.
When hiring for diversity becomes your main priority and the constant in-your-face political discourse, you vilify the audience. When you vilify your audience, you end up driving a wedge between your audience and your product.
Political commentary in film isn’t necessarily a bad thing, like you said. If it flows with the story and doesn’t overbear the story beats, it can actually open up room for discussion, in some cases it can expand, challenge, or change a person’s own beliefs.
However, Disney’s messaging just feels too overbearing. It doesn’t make me think or open up possibilities to challenge my beliefs. It reads like their own messages were adapted from Twitter and I can’t help but eye roll at the obvious messaging.

It's like Star Trek. People always say "Star Trek has always been woke". I know. _That's one of the reasons I liked it._ Star Trek: Discovery introduced a trans character just to have a trans character. It was obvious because they wrote him off the show as soon as they could. What's the point? If you want to tell stories about trans people you need to *tell stories* about them. Don't just have them exist and act like you've done something amazing. When Star Trek: The Next Generation did a story about gender identity I liked it because it actually said something. Now they want applause just for doing the bare minimum.
All right I have to stop because I could talk for hours about how much NuTrek shits on all the work done by people for decades to create a franchise that was a cultural juggernaut and is still loved to this day.

It's the only NuTrek show that gets the spirit of Star Trek right. Hell, I had the day off today and rewatched the entire third season.
At this point they need to do a Next Next Generation and move on, especially from Spock. For people my age (I was born I 1981) "Star Trek" means TNG, DS9 and VOY. That indicates that the franchise doesn't have to keep going back to the well of old characters to be successful. Ever since the 2009 movie it seems like producers think "Star Trek" is only the Enterprise, Kirk, Spock, Klingons, Khan and Tribbles. It is and can be so much more than that.

The oldest emotional movie experience I can remember of is when one of my aunts took me and my cousin to a theater in our local town to watch the Jungle Book, then the lastest Disney movie. My own children, now in their 30's and 20's, were brought up on videos of the Disney classics, the firs song my 30-year old daughter was able to learn was the Snow White "house cleaning song". We've visited Disneyland Paris four times, and when I was younger I visited Disneyland in Anaheim while on a vacation in the US. This long explanation just to say that my family and I were Disney fans... we WERE Disney fans... nowadays, none of us won't even consider spending one penny on a new Disney movie or the three-hour drive to Disneyland Paris. Edit: What family of 4 can afford a 2 day hotel stay for $4,000??? Most families save money for years just to be able to go to Disney. It's insane that Disney thought that would be successful.

You may be giving them too much credit by calling what they’re doing “re-imaginings.” Makes it sound like they’re actually doing something creative.

I honestly love Disney. Though I hope they continue to fail...hard. It's so wild to me that they believe like they can pump out the same garbage and think that people will eat it gladly. There is absolutely no originality, creativity, or anything worthwhile. I hope that this is a turning point for them to wake up, and go back to producing movies that we love.

I honestly think that allot of us did love " Disney", when they were creating stories that had heart and made sense.
Your statement says what I probably would have said. were I to have hired a good copy editor years ago, with tact!
I knew Bob Brunner (original orchestrator of Bambi) and he used to invite me to come to the set of productions, probably because he knew I had a great love horses, dogs, animals, in general, and was always concerned about how they were being treated. A childhood friend of mine that I used to ride ponies with back in Illinois, had introduced me to Bob , as a man of integrity and lover of children and animals...ha nature. Karen Jean Olsen. (We wrote the song "I Need a Miracle" as a wedding song for LDS Members, as she and I thought the old standard didn't include enough spirituality in it, and wasn't specific to Christianity.) I gave my children's musical stories to Bob, and he referred me to several of friends in the 'animation production" area but they all knew (I guess one might term it "contempt?") contempt for some stupid mouse as a toy for children!
My little character, "Honey" was depicted as a conservative little eight year old cello player, who was raised in the values of the Midwest...who didn't like amusement parks, loved real animals and creating useful items of her own...Bob said, "Honey might have her time-but it's not now...because fantasy and escape is so popular.!" Of course his terminology was much more exquisite and descriptive than mine.
"Honey" (I suppose like the creator/author/composer) doesn't desire to visit Disneyland...her opening line in " Beauty is as Beauty Does" was...
"Man Will Go Where He's Never Gone Before--- Hopefully, HOME!" (Since the character, herself is the victim of a "broken home" Ha) Her father works out of town for Big World Airlines...(Everythng else appears to be "big" to Honey, because she feels so "small.) When the children make fun of her and her "broken " home", her reply is " Our home isn't broken...we FIX EVERYTHING!" (And, she does!) When "Honey Visits With the Famous First Four", in her "Presidents' Story" and jumps on stage to try to add a bit of humor to Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison's evening string quartet scene, she claims that their music is "Just too Old!" Jefferson reminds "her" that music doesn't get old, PEOPLE do... I had it edited as a story but went on to musicals three and four, instead of pursuing it. Honey's is the star of "Honey and the Hayburners" and a Christian Christmas musical, " Honey Visits With Christmas Eve."
Why am I sharing this with you? Well, Ironically, when I called the copyright office ask about copyrighting the character , the songs and the stories,
the clerk came back to say, "Lynda, we think you can copyright on several FORMS...as we haven't had a copyright of a "character " who's drawings and stories, stage shows and musicals this complicated, since Walt Disney copyrighted his Mickey Mouse. The irony being, of course. HONEY would never be interested in being "entertained by" A MOUSE. Surely she could have a pet hamster though?
I used to call my brother (who was an accomplished saxophonist and cellist btw)and he'd say "I think your on to something, especially since allot of PARENTS think Mickey Mouse is STUPID!" Well, I'd disagree with him; Mickey Mouse was extremely well produced..and I, myself have such difficulty finding collaborators, as I hate writing script FORM, as much as I hate filling out COPYRIGHT FORMS! As "Honey" would say, " it takes a whole community of helpful people to make a SHOW." She would say, "I can't do this all by myself!"
When I found an extremely competent and creative classical guitarist, on Soundcloud, and he was willing to understand both my country, folk and gospel songs, AND coped with my sense of humor...I sent to him , several of Honey's theme songs from all five of her musicals. He turned her song "Time Goes By" and "One Enchanted Evening, I Found an OLD friend" into string quartets for me. All I could do was sing the different parts, so I was only able put it on You Tube "as a song." In reading YOUR comment, I'm inspired to again find writers out there who could understand "Honey" and her plights; She's not Pippi Silkstockings... (as Bob had suggested btw) She's a little girl from the Midwest who LIKES her environment, isn't worried about finding FANTACIES to "jump in to." But is just a little "spark" of a child who doesn't NEED "Hollywood" in order to enjoy her own little life!
Do you know writers who might "enjoy" reading about/hearing songs from..."Honey Unlimited!?" Copyrighted again with twenty more recent songs, in 2016.
"Lost in a Song About You"
"One Enchanted Evening, I Found an OLD Friend"
"Time Goes By" from " Honey Visits With the Famous First Four"
"Beauty is as Beauty Does" from the musical by the same title.

Same. As someone who loves old Disney to 90’s, early 2000’s to early 2010’s pre-2013-2016-2020 aka NOW, I just want the company to keep failing till they go bankrupt…
Every last few long lived passionate Disney people aren’t safe from the bigger evil corporate higher ups who are constantly breathing down their necks to produce garbage.

People were bashing Pokémon S/V for similar reasons to newer disney products: having bad performance and bad graphics, or bad writing and actors for Disney, but DIsney deserves this hate MUCH more. Yes, that is indeed REALLY bad, but everything else about the game is absolutely amazing: Best story since Black and White, fun gameplay that encourages the player to Catch Em' All, and it even nerfed some of the biggest threats ever (Like Zacian for example). While both Pokémon and Disney are multi-billion franchises, the people that create products for Pokémon are still allowed to put passion onto the prooyect by the corporate, and if Minecraft has taught gamers something, it is not to judge a game by its graphics. If it wasn't clear from my way of talking about the game, I LOVE the newer Pokéon titles, (except Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, of course) and I don't see the ''decline'' fans are talking about, games have been getting better since Ultra Sun and Moon.

Star Wars was just slaughtered... the franchise is DEAD. Which anyone could of predicted when they had J.J. Abrams for the first movie, the man is known for destroying every franchise he touches. People don't talk about star trek or star wars like they used to before Abrams touched those franchises.

@@hobogardenerbeneoliberal Capitalism wasn't created at Bretton Woods. John Maynard Keynes was intimately involved in the creation of Bretton Woods system so it was based on Keynesian economics. Neoliberalism was formulated in the 1970s as a rejection of Keynesian thinking and was supposedly a throwback to the liberal capitalism that allegedly existed before the ideas of Keynes (and Karl Marx) took hold. Basically neoliberals said free markets are everything, the profit motive is everything and the government shouldn't be involved in the economy at all. Pretty much every prediction made by neoliberal economists has proven to be wrong and no one (not even the right-wingers who absolutely adored them less than a decade ago) takes them very seriously today.
I also disagree that JJ Abrams is a symptom not a cause of the problem. No one hires JJ Abrams for political reasons. They hire him because he's a hack who makes big dumb movies that dumb people enjoy.
