Would I need any protection mat to protect my composite deck from heat?

Not at all, the bottom never gets warm. They have heat shields under to keep the heat from hitting the propane tank directly under the fire so the heat will never make it to hurt your deck! I have this fire pit on one of my wood decks right now at the new house.
