I totally agree and respect it because he couldn’t let what happened to Sarah happen again. You could see Joel didn’t want a real genuine relationship with Ellie when you first start but after dodging bullets and surviving infected he started to show more affection with her as he did Sarah. I’m a dad with a daughter and I’d do it all over again if I’d have to as Joel said. When Sarah died that shit hurt me even in the show. That’s why Joel when dark as Tommy explained when he had to survive the aftermath of the outbreak.

The line I like the most about what happened in the hospital is when he confesses to Ellie and says “Making a vaccine would’ve killed you… So I stopped them.” And this last phrase while says nothing specific (like I killed the guards, I killed Marlene etc.) but it easily gets the idea across as Ellie quickly realizes that Joel took down every single person who meant harm to his beloved girl

I hate that Joel never apologized for lying to her the whole time, he even made her feel bad for asking about it. If Ellie wasn’t that stubborn she would never know what really happened.
Marlene’s mistake was to not kill Joel on the spot right there. She knew they went through hell to get to them. She knows what he is capable of doing for his own selfish goals (and yes Joel is selfish here he truly cares about Ellie and that’s not up for debate, but also his protectivness of her is rooted in the fact that he failed Sarah he failed her as a father bc he wasn’t able to protect her and he hates himself for that, saving Ellie will not get his daughter back, but in a way he thinks that by doing this he can “atone for his sins” to some extent.. at least that is how I always interpeted his character). This is one of the few critiques that I have here. Marlene was shown to be a very empathetic person but she is also pragmatic and ruthless. She knew that Joel was a very real threat and her not killing him here kinda makes it less realistic for me, like you seriously let a person that wants you to prevent making a cure for humanity locked in a room in your own facility? Just kill him, don’t risk it especially with a beast like Joel
