    I think the main reason that new runners find wild skips and interesting new ways to play is that they don't have the muscle memory that more experienced players have. This means they are more of a wildcard when it comes to game input while the experienced players will typically only see advances made along the narrow corridor of optimized input they've honed over the years.
    Stay true, Vince Vaughn, stay true.

    • @CoopersCrazy
      @CoopersCrazy 7 лет назад +46

      I was thinking the same thing, the newer players haven't developed the advanced muscle memory yet, so they do things a little differently than the seasoned runners would.

    • @Seriona1
      @Seriona1 7 лет назад +5

      That may be true but as I am currently speed running this game AND I have played the game when it was first released, an issue is just getting restarted with the controller. Muscle memory doesn't play a role for me, I can easily dupe a speedrun by memory, it's the controller that sucks. And I am only using 1.1 which is ill-advise for speed running. I think a lot of new guys have this issue more than the others. I don't know a single speed runner who just picked this game up new.

    When I hear about really hard to reproduce glitches in games, it makes me think of the bug "Stairs Create Unknown Sector Types" in the original Doom engine (look it up on the Doom wiki). Basically, once in a blue moon, a single stair would get loaded incorrectly, and the game would crash if you tried to walk over it. The source of the bug was discovered by the developers of the Boom source port of the game. It turned out that the reason it was happening was due to a programming error - specifically, certain memory was uninitialized.
    This wouldn't be a problem most of the time, since those memory addresses weren't ever actually needed, unless one of them happened to end up as a specific value - the chance of which was 1 in 65,536, since it was a 16-bit memory location. Thus, the reason people almost never saw the bug is because the chance of that memory location having that specific value in it was so low - if it was random, the chance would be 1 in 1 in 65536, but in practice, it could be even rarer.
    So, what this makes me think is that some bugs might be this random, and thus virtually impossible to recreate, let alone track down the cause and figure out how to reproduce it. To find the cause of the problem without having the source code would be nearly impossible as well. This doesn't mean that I don't think people should try to find out how to reproduce these rare glitches, of course. But it's good to have perspective that it might not be possible to ever reproduce certain glitches. Just imagine if it was a 32-bit variable instead of a 16-bit variable that had to be a specific value - you would only get the correct value less than 1 in 4 billion times, assuming it was truly random.

      Old comment but you don't need source code to be able to know what the game is doing. You can RE anything, including N64 games. Even without RE you still have all kinds of tools at your disposal (especially in emulators).

      @R2Bl3nd 3 года назад +1

    I remember having an OOB when I was a kid, playing multiplayer with two friends in Facility. We were playing with the "+10" health setting, with grenade launchers and decided to shoot at each other in the tiny square room between the toilets and the main hall at the beginning of the level.
    After shooting at each other for a little while, one of my friends got knocked back really far out the room, out of bounds. We didn't really know what to do then, so my friend just decided to come back right into the fight, instead of exploring the outer world.
    We tried to replicate it later on, but never succeeded.

    • @TheFEARSlayer01
      @TheFEARSlayer01 5 лет назад +7

      From what I've been told about this the reason this happens in Surface 1 is because Surface 1 goes over it's memory limit when you trigger the alarm. Reminder that Sueface 1 is huge and has tons of unused crap and Jerry cans, crates, etc laying around so when more guards are loaded into the level the game can start to have issues loading guard's faces properly, in my experience guards have had the following: their facs only having their belt over it and the rest of the head being white, the camoflauge pattern from their clothing being their face and like the OP mentioned a guard having multiple faces. I'm sure their are more strange phenomenons with this but that's all I've been able to find as of now

    I love how mysteries can even exist within manmade objects such as video games. I guess it just goes to show you, in any somewhat complex thing with rules and emergent properties, there is always going to be those few edge cases brought on by some weirdness of all the interactions, that is completely unintended from what the creators wanted and which can be then hard to explain and thus "mysterious".

      what you're referring to is a collision box (or bounding box)
      i dont play goldeneye and i dont know why im even watching this video, but on many games, when an npc runs through a player it gently nudges the player back, this is usually clamped to prevent the player leaving the world but who knows.
      its possible a developer thought it wouldnt matter since unstucking a player would push a player out of the wall, the side they come out is dependant on which side of the wall the player is closer to.

I feel like many of these mysteries could be easily (or at least more accurately) explained by those in the know. Using an enemy, positioned a certain distance from a corner, and warping through it (the same way you'd warp through an opening door). Makes perfect sense to me, and it happened the same way both times. The only levels I see it being useful for would be archives and POSSIBLY streets if it de-loads some of the map.

    Theory on #5. It almost looks like 006 starts to head back into the control room where he just blew up the panel. Could it possibly be that he ran straight into the aftermath and managed to take damage that way? Highly unlikely but seems like the only other source of damage that could be dealt since there was no grenade (from the lack of lag evidence).

      this seems like its exactly what happened. trevelyan turned fully around and started running back into the room. there were two explosions happening. one from the turret, one from the console. trevelyan had enough time to run into an explosion before it died out. the question is why does he run into the room? my only guess is that axel is going through the level too fast and the game decides that Trevelyan needs to activate the console again? no idea.

    Well, considering this is a 'special' episode on Golden Eye aka not a speedlore, I've decided to upgrade from wine to scotch, so glad I did.
    I can't really say I'm big on speedrunning in the sense that I do it or that I watch it consistently. I do however watch speedruns of games I grew up playing, so basically the main ones on 64, Zelda OoT, Golden Eye, Mario 64 and Perfect Dark. There are a few more that I'd like to see but I'm really not familiar enough with world class speedrunners to be able to look them up (not do I really want to, I'm pretty specific in my taste of style of videos/editing/commentary). I'm more than satisfied with watching your content and your content alone, you're really the first I've watched, which I think was a huge mistake because for that reason, I've set the bar to be too high for anyone else to live up to my expectations, so my neverending thanks to you, Goose for the content you continue to bring into this world, I know I get excited as shit when I see you've uploaded and if I feel like that, I'm sure there are tonnes more!!
    Err, booze makes me digress, please bare with me for a few moments lol.
    With the growth of new consoles I kinda gave up on the older ones and paid all my attention to the newer ones. It's so good to see that the spirit of these world classic games still lives on!!
    Like I said before, I'm not into speedrunning as much as most of the viewers here, as in, I don't do it and I don't plan on doing it. But, I can however greatly appreciate the time, effort, determination and skill that is required to become a good speedrunner let alone a world class speedrunner. Skill and talent is slowly dying off because it can never be appreciated, even in the alternative ways of speedrunning. You've all worked it down to a very fine art and it's disgusting amazing!!
    Fuck me, I'm doing it again.
    Look, before I get sidetracked again. You're amazing at what you do, I absolutely love your content!! Relaxing after a fucked day at work with a drink and watching you is the best way to end a day.
    Sending love from Australia.

    I can kind of explain the Trevelyan cradle glitch. I have two theories, and I know one of them is right because I had a guide in 2004 that told me how to complete cradle in 39 seconds doing this same thing. It doesn't always work, but it's fairly consistent. Either: Getting to the final room triggers a check to see if Trevelyan is alive. If he's not rendered in, he's not alive for all intents and purposes. He can't be rendered in if you're not in the same room as him, so the game counts him as dead. Or: Running into the computer room and destroying the computer very quickly will cause Trevelyan to walk through the console explosion, killing him. I can't figure out which one it is because if you stay in the room with Trevelyan, he acts differently than if you keep running at full tilt ahead of him.
    Getting out of bounds is reproducible in a few spots, but it's not useful because the game only loads the room you're in, and I could never find a way to get back in bounds. The way to get out of bounds is to find a world seam and rapidly pause/unpause while moving forward. This is done on corners that are slightly too far apart or in spots where the wall seam can be seen clearly. I accidentally did the silo and train clips when I was a kid. That being said, it only happened to me by accident 3 times in 15 years of playing the game. Perhaps if you could find a streets clip, then you'd be cooking with gas. Some spots on streets load in large areas, so theoretically you could clip out on one side and clip back in on the other. Like I said, though- there doesn't appear to be a way to clip back into levels once you're out of bounds.

    • @Sypaka
      @Sypaka 6 лет назад

      I think, that was solved already. Trevelyan sometimes throws a grenade. He just blows himself up.
      So instead of shooting the console, you would try to trigger that and rush by, hoping he woul kill himself and the console with him..

    Could it be that the Baron only starts moving once a hitbox that detects the player is activated in the hallway? Could it be that due to lag the player just skipped the hitbox?
    This could be easily tested: just use flying cheats or go through the walls with cheats, and if the Baron does not react (then he is "frozen"), that means that there was a hitbox triggering the Barons' fight

  • @y4wnd3r3
    @y4wnd3r3 7 лет назад +3

    As someone who has never played goldeneye, allow me to place my theory. The game appears to load and unload things very frequently to prevent lag. What I believe to be happening is one of two things. The more likely one is that when the game loads a new area, there is a brief moment when enemies can push Bond's hitbox far enough past where the walls SHOULD be to clip him out of bounds. The less likely one is that the game fully despawns Bond's hitboxes in places like new screens and when pausing. Due to the likelihood of it being the first choice and the fact that enemies up close and personal in such a way lead me to believe that OoB will be inconsistent and have very little place in speedrunning levels like streets due to inconsistency

    • @Sypaka
      @Sypaka 6 лет назад

      You mean, they push bond between the seams between a room loading and unloading?
      wow, that makes it actually a frame perfect glitch.

    According to the Goldeneye 64 Wiki, it is possible for any enemy who dual wield lasers to become frozen, like the Baron. The page states that it's caused when an enemy tries to dodge roll, and then open fire. It happens to the Moonraker guards sometimes. So, it's just a chance glitch that doesn't appear to be exploitable.

    • @RetroArcadeGuy
      @RetroArcadeGuy 7 лет назад +3

      It could be that. The guy goes so fast doors barely get to close themselves. In one of those, probably from ALL THAT RANDOM SHOOTING WAKING UP ALL THE GUARDS made the guard behind the door to open it and chase Jamie down.

    • @svampebob007
      @svampebob007 7 лет назад +4

      my theory is that he did actually shoot the guard, through a tinny gap in the map (textures are separate to bullet "physics") , and the AI got alerted because dead body = sound, sound = enemy, so go look thus open door, yet the code for rendering any actual body was not there neither the "enemy" (player) nor the guard(s) so it skipped a few lines of codes where the programmer never though of checking if the player was actually at a spot where he could shoot the guard, but a variable for "is this door open did get flipped to true" because it's less demanding to keep track of it.
      Logically it's quite simple: keeping track of what needed objective has been activated is easier to keep track off then what's actually needed to activate it is.

    At 3:22, right before he reaches the top of the stairs, look at the top of the screen. You can see the border shaking, right after which Trevelyan's message plays, which indicates that either a guard or Trevelyan had in fact thrown a grenade. In fact, it was probably when he got close to Trevelyan at 3:16 that he made him drop the grenade and stay in that spot until it exploded.

    Well after watching these, I think a lot could be explained by the RAM. The N64 used RAMbus DRAM that was not ECC. The RAM is naturally decaying and is processed and shipping with an acceptable tolerance (so many faults per million). So with so many speedruns, you will often see the moments where the decayed ram (prior to refresh), would affect a clip check, etc.

    I wish you made some Perfect Dark videos. That may be the only game I have ever legitimately attempted speedrunning. Never used Elite though, I just played around on the Xbox arcade leaderboards. I had quite a few top 5-10 scores and for a few months I was #2 for overall score. It mostly just involved clever exploits that I found due to my knowledge of the game. For instance you get points for headshots so on the villa level you can get past the final door by opening running thru and closing the door quickly. Carrington is sitting there and you can unload all of your ammo into his head for points etc. It was a good time. If I had an N64 I would join the Elite and start submitting runs because I absolutely love that game

      Just Another RUclips Channel I remember a way to do a little clipping in a very limited fashion is to use the tiny bond cheat, crouch in front of stairs in tiny mode, and try to go down stairs...the player floats above the stairs and can clip through the roof above stairs in a few locations. The only clipping I remember exploring in the game, not too useful as it only works above stairs, but there may be a further glitch method that can be applied on top of that one although I’m not sure.

  • @MisterNohbdy

    Yeah, I clipped OoB once when I played GoldenEye as a kid. Had to look up a bunch of level videos just now to figure out which one it was, since I don't remember level names anymore. It was Bunker II. You reach the final room by turning left; the exit door will then be in front of you, and a bunch of consoles hang from the ceiling in the middle of the room. Standing here, before actually entering said room, the wall to the left and in front of you will be mostly obscuring the big screen in the next room. I clipped through the corner of that wall while shooting at (and blowing up) the hanging consoles, all while a bunch of guards were firing at me.
    It's been two decades, so my memory of the incident may be faulty, but those are the facts of which I'm quite certain. I'm less certain of other factors, like which weapon(s) I was using, or whether or not one of the guards actually hit me to push me OoB.
    Given that (just like my experience) both of the examples in your video involve a lot of guards shooting at the time, and they're each immediately preceded by the game getting frame-y, it wouldn't surprise me if this glitch just involves a collision check being delayed due to too much stuff going on at once. If that's the case, this spot in Bunker II might be a good place to test, due to the near-simultaneous explosion of all those hanging consoles being a semi-reliable way to make the game hang.

  • @justanotheryoutubechannel

    I would assume that the ghost door has something to do with a guard opening it. Perhaps, on the video where there was no guard a guard had opened the door and then left the area or clipped out of the map?

    I have not played golden eye in ages but remember my friend and I were able to clip through the barriers (Walls) by doing an action while rapidly pausing and unpausing against a wall.
    We theorized that when pausing objects lose their collision barrier and if done correctly you clip through.
    We were not able to get it to 100% of the time but it was interesting when it first happened, and me being curious would start playing it over and over to replicate it and finally got it to work from time to time when pausing and hitting an action button like aim and then unpause while still trying to push in the wall.
    But the collision turning off during a pause makes since due to:
    - the cells are on floor level (interior mostly)
    - Enemy attacks seem to not continue damaging you as they relentlessly assault you when you pause (meaning the collision barrier that detects the hit is not active)

    Back when I was a kid, I used to play a lot of Goldeneye with the kid I lived with. About 50% of the time that we played Bunker2, there was a figure that would run around just out of frame, so you'd see a flash of a black textureless model going past the far side of a door, or going around the corner at the end of a hallway. We never got a close up look and never heard of it from anyone else, but I don't think we were imagining it. We used to call it "the ghost".
    Sounds like creepy pasta, I know, but I swear it happened.

    I'm not sure if this has been said before, but I can tell the Baron Samedi freezing glitch doesn't only occur to him. The dual-wielding Laser armed Drax Soldiers in the Aztec level can also be frozen in the same fashion. To reproduce it more easily, enable the Fast Animation mode so they move faster. Make sure to set the difficulty on 007 settings with 0% accuracy so you won't be bothered by keeping yourself alive.
    After you beat Jaws, there are infinite spawning of Drax soldiers wielding the Laser. Some of them are using two of that weapon at once. These dual-wielding enemies are the ones we're interested in, as they are the only other enemies where the freezing animation glitch can occur. If these Drax soldiers roll around and fire away right afterwards, it is possible for them to freeze in place. It might take some time to get them in this position, but I clearly remember freezing them in place many times.
    I don't think I've tried to replicate this glitch with other dual-weaponry enemies, such as the D5K or ZMG. In fact, I first assumed the freezing glitch occured because the Fast Animation cheat made these enemies skip something in their script. But apparently it isn't the case. If, at this time of writing, there's more information on this glitch, do tell me about them.

    Could the Trevelyan one be a single-event upset? An ionizing particle passing through the system's RAM stick in just the correct place could "flip a bit". If that bit corresponded to Trevelyan's health , it could perhaps cause something like that to happen. Some time ago RUclips was suggesting the video I got the idea from to everyone, so you may already know what I'm talking about. Ionizing particles fly around all the time, and single-event upsets are a real thing, albeit rare.

    It's weird how, for some reason, with goldeneye the attitude toward what causes glitches like this is like "it's a mystery that can't be solved and whether it happens to you or not is up to the gods", meanwhile other games like Super Mario World have been 100% reverse engineered and exploited to the point where arbitrary code can be written to ram and executed using just in-game actions. I guess my point is, if you want to know why weird shit in this game happens, stop playing the game and start looking at the game's code.

    When I was a kid, I pushed a guard OOB. He simply vanished through the wall and never came back. I spent over 10 minutes trying to look for him in different parts of the level but he was nowhere to be found. He wasn't dead either because I didn't pick up ammo around the last place where he was last seen.

    he's a theory for travelion in the cradle, he's not immune to the death floor because he's not so much an NPC but an adapted "2nd player" ie. he's an automated version of the state another player would have in the multiplayer (or the planned 2 player mode)

    Insight into Archives ghost door #4: It may have something to do with Mishkin and the secret passage to the left at 12:08. I have a hypothesis that he's alerted through a wall glitch (I saw a thing that says Goldeneye 'copies' alerted guards) and then he or a copy open the door from seeing the player in the secret passage. The copy may despawn when his plot AI kicks in. Alternately, the door might glitch open if the secret passage doorway gets stuck in an opening state (like if a guard spawns inside of it while opening it). Last thought is a possible glitched guard from the courtyard that despawns.
    To give some context: Archives was one of my favorite levels. I didn't speedrun or play competitively, and I haven't played this in well over a decade, but I had this anomaly happen a lot. I get the feeling it was something with that secret passage, and something about Mishkin opening the ghost door. I found him out of place in the hallway behind the safe room more than a couple times, and at least once he wasn't in the level at all. I've never seen two copies of him.
    More help that might be useful: I would shoot both guards, didn't use the magnet watch, ran through the storage room & typically blew up the boxes, up the far 'B' staircase, went left down the hall, then crossed to the 'A' staircase hallway through the secret passage, went through that door to the larger open area, stopped off at the window to the courtyard before rescuing Natalya. I'd usually get 3 stationary guards (the extra guard is not patrolling) in the courtyard. Looking down on the courtyard, the guards were bottom-left, top-right (opposite the courtyard door), and mid-right.
    After that, rescue Natalya, go down to meet Mishkin, and the door is open. I played for completion a lot - kill all the guards, blow up all the boxes, break all the glass, take all the body armor. I did try not to alert the guards. Cheats on a lot. I think Mishkin shot me more than a few times for no reason. Not sure how much that bit helps, but if there's people analyzing the memory, then it might help. I've been jogging mine the best I can, don't think I have any more help than this.

    the most important speedrun of Goldeneye was when I got it for Christmas as a kid, and spent the next 8 hours playing it, beating it on agent, then immediately starting in secret agent and going again. great Christmas.

    8 months later lol.
    on #5: it seems like trevelyan actually ran back into the room as axel ran past him. there were explosions going on in the room...
    #4: apparently baron freezes because there is a glitch that happens whenever enemy's use dual moonraker lazers. in aztec there are guards that are dual wielding the weapon that also freeze up as well. and you can induce this glitch by being in a certain position when an enemy is firing the lazers.
    #3: most obvious answer to me is that the guard that opened the door is not spawned properly. my theory on this is that if you wake up the guards by shooting in a specific spot that wakes up a guard that is supposed to be there before he is actually spawned makes him despawn or just not get renedered or something. so the game opens the door because the guard is chasing you. but he doesnt actually exist in the level because he wasnt spawned in or despawned. it may have something to do with the way the game spawns guards. but i have no real evidence other than my observations from playing this game.
    #1: he definitely clipped through the doorway as the door was moving. if you watch carefully he goes through the door as it disappears into the doorway slot. it must be that when he opens the door while the guard is in front of him blocking him that the collision pushes him through the door while its moving and that carry's him out of bounds. however, it must be that you need to be exactly frame perfect for it to work. which would, unfortunately, mean that this is basically impossible to do on most other levels. since levels like street, dont have doorways that are this wide that have doors that recede into the doorway like the ones on the train level.
    if you look at the silo example this appears to somewhat confirm my theory. you can use a guard and a very specific angle to clip through a wall. but still. it must be that you have to move at a timing that is frame perfect for it to work. it must be a flaw with how the game handles collision in the event that you are running into guard and a wall/doorway at the same time. i think the train example must be easier to replicate because the moving door sort of helps out. i have no real idea of how to do that though. my guess is that the game simply pushes you out of bounds because it doesnt want you and the guard to be in the same spot at once. this is similar to how halo works. in halo the game doesnt want two characters in the same spot at once because the collision prevents it. and because the flood enemy's have a chance to respawn after being killed. that is they get back up you can do a trick known as a "flood bump" where you position yourself and a flood combat form against a door. and when it jumps back up after dying the game pushes you through the door to prevent having two objects in one space. this can be used to skip large portions of the library mission. this must be at least similar to goldeneye. maybe it happens when the enemy's do their kneel and shoot animation. this is a very facinating occurance to me obviously since i just wrote a whole mini essay on it lol. but id bet you that's exactly what's happening. the game handles collision by forcing bond out of bounds which it sees as prefereable than having bond and the guard be in the same spot at once. then the game doesnt know what to do since you arent supposed to be out of the map.

    When he ran past Alec going down the ramp outside of the room I think Alec glitched out and ran back in the room just long enough to get damage from the explosion happening from the machine blowing up. Oh Alec always glitching about.

    Regarding the out of bounds thing. Maybe the textures of the map weren't loaded but things like despawning zones were? What I mean to say is that while out of bounds maybe it's possible to finish the stage by finding the goal. Not that you can see it since it doesn't have any textures, what I am saying is that maybe it's there but not visible to save memory and space. I guess the only way to find out is by trial and error. I hope they do find a consistent way to go out of bounds.

    Great vid! These sorts of video are fun and entertaining. Have to mention on #4 with Baron freezing; that happened a number of times back when I was playing the N64 in the late 90s. I thought this was a typical glitch. IIRC, it seemed it happened when wielding the golden gun?

    Seeing that frozen Barron triggered a strange memory for me. I can't remember if it actually happened to me, as it would have been almost 20 years ago, but I have a sense of familiarity there and I know it's not from seeing it on some other RUclips video.
