The simplest way to define "shooting" in this game is probably from the "Shots total" counter at the end of the missions. That counter doesn't count non-bullet weapons such as Remote Mines or the Watch Laser, so that's all cool.
Funnily enough, I just played Archives, and decided to let the guards finish their dialogue, and when the 3rd guard, who carries an KF7, came into the room, as soon as they started to attack, he pulled a grenade. Yes, use a hand grenade in a small crowded room. Genius.
I remember Cradle 00 Slappers-Only from a bingo me and the boys did years ago. We used the trevelyan grenade strat and just "hugged" the console while crouched, hoping to have the guards blow it up by shooting and somehow not die. I think we also did Frigate, Archives, Egypt, and some other thing. If you want to use as less explosives as possible, you can also just hug the window on archives until guards shoot it for you, as well as luring a guard to throw a grenade at the locked hatch on Surface 1 (the latter is of course super boring).
I'm glad that you made a video about finishing without shooting, because I did and I personally liked finishing with slappers only, although you did much better than I did, since I had to shoot some few times. While I was playing it, I was trying to think of a cool name for this playing mode, and the best I came up with is "Not Licensed To Kill" (NLTK), which is technically true, since you don't "kill" anyone in your way through the levels, just making then unconscious. By the way, if you change the rule "you can't shoot" to "you can't kill with a gun" ,it becomes possible to finish the game at the same time that it makes it less tedious to finish.r Just like you, I didn't finish in higher difficulties, just in agent, and I have no idea if it's possible to finish the game without using guns to kill, but it would be awesome to see this happening. Also, have a good day.
It's incredibly crazy how GoldenEye is just so damn solid as a game. Most other 3D Games of that era, be it N64 or other consoles, even Gamecube have an abundance of clips and ways to get out of bounds. But GoldenEye doesn't. Can you explain why that is the case goose? It's an interesting topic to dive into...maybe even taking a look into how the game is coded. What also would be interesting would be an indepth video about how the RNG in GoldenEye works and tricks to manipulate it, if there are any.
It was mentioned in other videos but there are ways of going out of bounds but only the room you're in is loaded and you usually can't get back in so it hasn't had much use.
I think the videos you make where it's not entirely ABOUT the techniques and strategies, but overcoming challenges with them are always a treat and fun to watch.
Just a month or 2 ago, someone found a strategy for Dam. It involves standing at the gate, shooting at the door near modem, then run and hide behind the modem boxes. With luck, the guards will come out, run to the gate and open it. I'm told it is not easy.
I don't think Secret or 00 Are possible. You can't kill drone guns by slapping, and in Control, Natalya won't leave the lift until you destroy all the drones too. I don't know if the guards that early on can pull grenades, either. I know they do in the NEXT room, but that requires getting Natalya to open the door first.
You are so passionate about the stuff that you make videos about that it doesn’t even matter if the content is slightly ridiculous, it’s still fun and compelling to watch. Truly talented youtuber right here.
You definitely can. Agent difficulty is quite easy, the AI has garbage aim, and you have much easier objectives. You could beat it on agent no problem.
WRT the watch laser on Train, does it add to the shots fired counter on the end screen of the level? If I remember correctly it doesn't, so therefore by the games own logic, it's not shooting.
No, As far as I can see it says "Weapon of Choice - Unarmed", you have to use the all weapons cheat and use the taser to get "weapon of choice - taser"
Pretty great video. I knew the answer for Dam having done an uncountable amount of runs on it at this point. Also thanks for pushing me to set up the 'ol n64, I've had a ton of fun running goldeneye so far. Hoping I can snag me some points soon though, my Dam A 54 is just sitting there taunting me.

Love your content. Grew up playing goldeneye, but didnt know about speed running until I found your videos. Thanks for putting these videos and the speed lore out.
This reminds me of the achievement in Half Life 2: Episode 1 where you’re supposed to beat the game only firing one bullet, which is on a lock at a gate that you can’t get open any other way other than shooting it. Basically what I’m saying is, Valve stole from Rare.
this was an excellent idea and i would very much love to see more videos of this nature also youre the only person whose videos i will thumbs up before watching and wish i could thumbs up again after finishing
I really enjoyed this video Goose! The fact you got through the rest of the game without even shooting is extremely impressive! I used the Trevelyan trick myself. Ironic that 006 actually helps 007 save the world from the Goldeneye satellite. I think MI6 should give the late Alec a pardon for all his crimes for this brave act of sacrifice!
My strategy for the escape hatch on Train was to stand right outside of that room and destroy as many of the locks as possible from there - you can actually destroy a surprising number of them from that spot, like about 75% of them or so - and then run in and finish the remaining locks, then run to the end, and leave Natalya on the train. This works, because the game defines "Rescue Natalya" as "make sure that Natalya is alive when you get to the end of the stage".
hmm maybe on train you can only slapper the guards and laser anything that's not a guard? even if you do use the laser gun on the guards.. Idk if I would count that as shooting. nice work!
From a Game Design standpoint, it is cool to put a tutorial/check at the beginning of your game to make sure the player's controller is working. The Lock in Dam seems to verify that the N64 controller's Z button and R-Trigger work, and that the Player is capable of using them to effect. I wonder if there's a place early in the game where you can't progress without the B button.
And this is why GoldenEye is a classic. There's so many modern shooters that act like they have more freedom of gameplay choice than ever before yet would utter fail a test like this.
does the "speed strat" for surface incluude blowing up the locks with either a nade....or nade launcher? what im thinking about is using that SUPER FAR mine toss deal (but with a nade)..... to blow the locks ya just climb the ladder, and jump in a hole...... no shooting locks i cant remember if in the episode on surface..... the current strat does that or not

Can you use that bunker 2 R button escape glitch to get passed the locked fence in damn? I am assuming not, since the jail cell has a slight and obvious space, but the locked fence in dam doesn't seem to have a space between.
I actually wanted to do a no gun run of the game, and I came to the conclusion that, if the weapon does not increase the bullet counter at the end of the mission, it doesn't count as a gun. Obvious ones include the knives, both melee and throwing, fists, and the taser, but interesting ones include the rocket launcher and grenade launcher. I didn't use those, but the watch laser and mines/grenades don't count.
Can you do the weapons cheat to get a grenade to blow up the padlock in Dam, or doesn't that work? If it does work would that void run due to using cheats?
0:30 "And beating it would mean starting on the first level, damn!" Ok but what's the name of the level? Edit: 14:17 "But wait, let's go back to, damn!"
I actually watch Gamechamp3000's videos sometimes because he does these challenges and makes them really entertaining, and I couldn't help but notice how often he'll pull strategies from speedrunners in order to sequence break, skip sections of levels, or simply avoid breaking the challenge, so it would seem that this kind of thing is right up your alley if you choose to do more.
