I know the running joke about the CX-70 is “Just buy a CX-90 and fold the third row seats down……”. Well, it’s a little more than that. Although the CX-70 and CX-90 share the same engine(s), Tech, and exterior shell, that’s where it ends. The CX-70s Exterior is trimmed out to be more sportier than the luxurious CX-90. The CX-70s suspension is set up tighter with a more sporty approach than the softer CX-90. The CX-70s Interior is designed to be more Sport oriented than the CX-90s luxury interior. The Interior/Exterior color combo on the CX-70 are more inviting than the Softer Interiors of the CX-90. And the list goes on and on……. This in itself shows that both the CX-70 and CX-90 are more than just a “Third row seating” difference!
Although it’s definitely chassis engineering (remember, the Audi TT was a subtly different and much pricier VW Rabbit), there are a number of subtle differences in styling & driving dynamics between a ‘24 CX-90 and ‘25 CX-70. So to save a bit of scratch, get a Preferred Trim 90 & unbolt the whole rear seat
agree... but if you want Melting Copper exterior, your only option is this Red interior or black... and the Melting Copper / Red combo is questionable, to put it kindly. (at least, on the PHEV. Maybe the I6 has that tan interior available)
@@brandononbrandMy Melting Copper CX-70 PHEV Premium is coming to me with a Greige Leather interior, whereas the Red Nappa (or Black Nappa) is a Premium Plus only, I was told. I agree that the Red leather is a far better match for PolyMetal Grey, with which Greige would just be TOO much grey for me.
Nice video. Great review! Looks like a great SUV.. but I feel it’s just too long it would have been a great competitor to the BMW X3 M40i. I never buy a first year model even if it’s made in Japan.. they will iron out any kinks in the next few years just like the Lexus NX. I really liked the CX-50 but I chose to skip it due to the problems I have read about it, as well as not Japanese made. I do not the CX-5 kinda feels floaty.. made me car sick lol 😆
Thanks, I appreciate you watching! 🙂 Good insight! The CX-5 compared to this CX-70 definitely has a shorter wheelbase and less weight holding it down to the road, but still I personally really like the CX-5s. Especially the turbo models, lol.
Haha right?! When I started looking into the 70 to review I was awfully surprised that it’s basically the same vehicle. I wonder why Mazda didn’t just offer it as a 2 or 3 row SUV. 🤷♂️🤪
They just edited their CX-90 advertisement video file name to CX-70.mp4 and saved it as a new copy. (Though its a copy, it is brand new according to Mazda).
After waiting several more months for the CX-70 to see what differences there would be from the 90 (and finding them to be minimal) that's literally what I did at the end of April. I love my CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus! I actually like the more 'formal' look (ie: chrome instead of blackout trim), and like having the option of a 3rd row for the rare occasion when it's needed. AND... I really wanted 'Artisan Red'. From UberEats delivery cyclists and RN's, to CEO's, people do 'double-takes'/walk backwards to take a longer look. The color is stunning. The 70's 'Melting Copper' did make me think, tho...!
I'm getting a PHEV Premium Plus in the CX90 with white interior because the CX70 only comes in Red or black interiors which I don't like. Other than colors and third row and chrome front on cx90 all else the same...plus I like chrome!
Too slow for 340 hp. Idk how Mazda manages to be so far behind any of its European competitors. Even the massive Grand Highlander is quicker, and a base Mdx with only 290 hp is on par with this. Sounds great, but it competes more with the MDX and maybe XC90, not any of the germans.
Accoding to Mazda sales the new 8 speed in CX70/90 does not have a torque converter but a set of dual clutch. The torque converter was replaced by a electric motor, and a set of wet dual clutch on the front and end of the 8 speed transmission
I know this is only personal preference, and maybe it’s that I’m tired of big slow screens just for the purpose of almost every auto maker having a big screen, but I love this infotainment system in my Miata. But also in that car I’m less focused on the infotainment system than in a cruiser like this. 🤷♂️🤪
If it’s rated 6.4 that’s at sea level on a sticky drag strip and without rollout. The fact that this did a true time of 7.3 or 7.0 without rollout at a mile of density altitude is actually impressive. A naturally aspirated car that runs 6.4 in perfect conditions would likely run an 8-8.5 on this same test. Would you mind elaborating what the transmission information correction is? I’d really appreciate it!! Thanks for watching. 🙂
Mazda keeps pushing nearly the same SUV for some reason. CX-30, CX-5.CX-50, CX-70, CX-90. Seriously why? They all look the same except the size of them but even that is hard to tell them apart. Looks very nice tho. Great review - subscribed and liked.
Haha that’s a good question, and I’ve not much thought about that. But yes, Mazdas are very recognizable across their line up these days. Thanks for watching and being supportive!! 🙂
Haha, yeah the minivan comment wasn’t a bad thing. They’re have just about the most efficient use of their space for any vehicle the same length. 🤷♂️🤪
Fyi, Ive been told by a CX-70 owner that the vents in the cargo area are not functional. Mazda was just too lazy to revamp the cargo area to remove them and the rear cup holders.
Oh very interesting lol. Yeah, I didn’t check for that but it’s funny what manufacturers do to save money. I film a lot of Subarus and the new gen 2025+ Foresters use the center console from the Crosstrek, which both lost the CD player in the last few years. Yet they didn’t redesign the center console to get rid of the CD holder lol. 😂
Yeah, I would have expected more. But a lot of other unibody vehicles I’ve tested have been similar to this or 900. Heck, even a 4Runner was also around 850 if I remember correctly, lol. I filmed a CX90 last year, but I don’t remember if I paid attention to actual sticker payload ratings back then. Thanks for watching! 🙂
The cx90 is 1190 but if you look the gvw is 6014 the curb weight is 4963 so that's 1150 difference it seems like all 5 passengers car are 850 the cx50 is 850 I checked I think they do this for safety reasons they put a 300 lb. Buffer because they know people are going to go over 850

Nice vehicle. However, there are two things about this vehicle I do not like: 1. Not having a touch screen for the infotainment system. Mazda is so stubborn even though most of their customers prefer touch screen and they still refused to provide it. 2. Vehicle is too narrow for the American market, before the release they kept saying wide-body over and over. It might be wide-body for the European or Japanese market, but definitely not for the American market...when compared to its competition in the USA, it's just too narrow and that is the reason the vehicle does not look good when viewed from the rear.
Good insight! I honestly love the small screen and using the spiny dial on my Miata, lol. But also I know that vehicle isn’t about convenience and comfort like this SUV is. Thanks for watching and proving your thoughts! 🙂
That is wide body. Narrow is cx-60 and cx-80, whoch are exclusively available outside of NA. You see how spacious this vehicle is? Have you sat in one? Unless ur over 6’6” and/or weigh over 300lbs, you’ll fit.

Good to know. Thanks for posting the differences.
The biggest difference is that a cx70 is a 2025 model year with Alexa the cx90 is a 2024 model year
Oh yes, the Alexa integration! Thanks for mentioning that!!
They left off the fog lights. Even the Subaru Crosstrek has them! Jeez!
why did Mazda skimp on storage for the driver?
it's frustrating when a smaller car like Lexus NX has so much more driver convenience.
Just brought the exact same car last night color combination the poly Grey looks so nice i will be picking it up next week when it comes in
That’s awesome! Thanks for watching and I hope you thoroughly enjoy it.
