This was such a BLAST! So hype to see everyone loving it so far and the buzz of the PREMIERE was so humbling to read everyone’s love for the VoicePlay guys! Thanks for letting me join in this Swashbuckling Sea Shanty!!!!
You did so good!!
You were absolutely incredible, Captain Jose!
Haha. I like it Captain Jose! Thanks for the love!
Always a pleasure working with you Jose, thanks for joining us again!
Loved your performance and the way you blend with Voiceplay. Everything about this was astounding!
I'm leaving this comment here in a hope that whenever someone likes it, I'll be reminded of this masterpiece.
I gotchyou
I gotchu
Your lucky day😂
Don't worry, homie. I Gotchu.
I got you too! Time to listen again!
"Lord Beckett, they... they've started to sing, sir."
Beckett: "Finally."
"They are undoubtedly the best pirates I've ever heard of..."
"FINALLY."
@@InstrucTube so it would seem
What is this from, I have seen everything saying it
@@erindelle2732 Pirates of the Caribbean
Just found an Instagram reels with this song and everybody on the comments was very moved by it. It's a reel about nature disasters and Geoff's voice made ir sound like a call from death itself. Beautiful and bone chillinh.
I'm sorry but is no one going to talk about how Geoff slides up TWO octaves? That's incredible.
that's because he didn't... he started the slide, but it was picked up Jose and then Geoff dropped back down to keep the bass line going. It was a masterfuly done hand off.
@@Sadarsa At 3:02-3:04? Jose is singing with Eli and Cesar. At the same time, we can hear the F4 that Geoff is sustaining at the top of the slide. It may be passed off briefly after but the part I was in awe of was just the slide :)
@@Sadarsa OH yes he did!!!
There's a recording somewhere of him sliding from a D5 to like an E1. He's just fucking insane
I believe F2 to F4
"We got a little carried away with this one" I think I speak for everyone when I BEG YOU to keep "getting carried away" because this is indescribable except for the word "perfect"
I cannot help but agree
The only thing I woud point out is the line is "never say we die" and not "never shall we die". The Chinese sailor in Singapore in the movie speaks the line as Emma Swan gets out of the boat, then mentions tht it is a dangerous song to be singing.
Old sailors never die, they merely retire to Fiddlers Green.
Apart from that, the song is the best one Voiceplay has done so far. Keep going guys, we love it, you never fail to go one better every time you do a new song.
@@Tryst46 The official lyrics actually say "never shall we die", though!
@@maeco7 It could be a mistake that the editors of the movie missed then. I would think that using the word "say" sounds more likely, pirates would never have regarded themselves as thieves or beggars.
Also, as I said above, they never die, they simply retire to Fiddlers Green, the sailors idea of heaven. A place where the fiddle never stops, the dancers never tire and the Rum and Tobacco never run out.
Agreed!
"Getting carried away" is the best!
It makes worth watching over and over.
" Getting carried away" gives me the goose bumps everytime!
Geoff: I’m much more comfortable as a baritone.
Also Geoff: Belts a B0 sub harmonic low enough that Davy Jones locker feels it

He confirmed a B0 in the Halo cover/tribute though. So he got there eventually! LOL
It is said that silence after music is still music, and I feel it in that slight echo after the last chord. This version is imbued with the magic of Voiceplay, a fascinating spectacle for the ears and eyes. Thank you for sharing your incredible talent with us.
So Vikings ✅ Zombies ✅ Disney Characters ✅✅ and now Pirates...VoicePlay really are the theater kids of acapella...and as a theater kid I thank you. Now hoist the colors and keep a weathered eye on the horizon lads

Eli is even more terrifying as a pirate than he was as a viking. If anybody's going to be elected Pirate King, it'll be him! There's just a certain look in his eyes that warns you not to cross him . . .
OMG here we go! Can't hardly wait. My husband is laughing at me squeeing over here, I love the costumes already
Kathy’s the Pirate king lol!
I’d take pirate or berserker Vikings Eli over pirate Cèsar - that blind eye gives me nightmares

ABSOLUTELY. Agree.
This song was literally made for Geoff, not to talk about the absoloutly stunning elements the rest of the group added to the magnificent piece. Fantastic.
He also does Misty Mountains from LOTR❤❤

What about Geoff, he is 6 ft deep, he is known for his subharmonic to hit subterranean with that he command the waves.
So true! Love love love it!
YES! I thought the same thing! The close-up of him contorting his face and mouth to make the amazing sounds he makes made him look dangerously demented. So COOL!
he so does, my thoughts too haha
I cannot recall any version better than this. This is Musical History. Half is knowing.
God his voice can go so damn low and then high. Goosebumps
You guys fill space like nothing I've heard since Pentatonix was original. Maybe even better. The voices you guys have are so much more ... I don't know ... full and round? I have had a love for acapella my whole life, especially after I heard the Vocal Majority at my high school live my senior year. Our drama teacher had connections.
About 15 years later, I found out that my Uncle Buddy sang with the Vocal Majority and I couldn't believe it!! I've known him my whole life, my favorite Uncle and Aunt ever, and never knew he could sing. Traveled to Seattle to see him sing just after I moved to Oregon. I think it was 1998 or 99. One of the best evenings of my life ... and the last time I saw my Uncle Buddy before he passed of a heart attack about 5 years later.
I will treasure that evening in Seattle listening to him sing, sitting by my favorite Aunt ever. It was literally one of the most joyous evenings of my life.
1. Geoff WTF WAS THAT
2. Eli was literally born to be a pirate
3. Layne I see you over here singing bass
4. Cesar ok man we get it your good
5. Jose YOU NEED TO JOIN VOICEPLAY RIGHT NOW
I absolutely love your 5th on up your list.
He probably would, if he hadn't just joined Rockapella.
Uh....I have no idea which is which so I need a visual to the name.

1. Geoff - the guy with the the low voice and long blond hair.
2. Eli - the scary bald guy
3. Layne - the guy with the short dark hair sitting in the front next to Geoff
4. Cesar - the cute one with the scar over one eye
5. Jose - the dude in the middle with the impressive beard
Jose
...
Daaaaamn.
Jose : The confident and cocky captain
Eli : The 1st mate standing by his captain but raring to swing over to the other ship and join the fray
Layne : All pirates are off in the head, Layne a bit more so
Cesar : The traumatized captive maybe held for ransom, but more likely never going to see home again
Geoff : The Kraken! Coming up from the depths to take any and all back down with him
Loved this description, so right on.
Underrated comment
Amazing description. I totally agree, but also based on some of his facial expressions; I'd say Cesar is also starting to go slightly crazy, like the rest of the crew. He looks traumatized, but also like he is being "manipulated" into more "pirate manner". If that makes sense.
Totaly.
@@Waterlily6519 the shackle/tamborine is especially poignant. When Layne starts beatboxing and his eyes go wide, he gets this skeletal look that makes you wonder..is this guy beatboxing from the grave? Eli looks straight up treacherous. and Geoff....what can we say...I get dizzy when he hits F1, like my blood pressure dropped. These guys are all Superhuman, aliens amongst us.
Why can't we like more than once?! Brilliant.
When Geoff sings on his own, he sings low, but when others pop in, he just drops!
Can we just talk for a minute about that amazing scene transition with Layne’s cutlass?? It’s that level of attention to detail that blows me away. Other cool details that captivated me:
-the flick of the head with the vocal percussive “HEY”
-everyone subtlety swaying for a few measures
-lighting that looks like lightning
-everyone taking a turn spiking the camera, which was very effective at evoking emotion in me and connection and drawing me in
-VP brands on hands/arms
Now the musical stuff. Eli’s powerhouse gritty vocals literally blow me back in my seat. Just when you think you’ve seen everything Eli has to offer…he offers more. Geoff’s two-octave jump UP rather than down was an incredible surprise (3:02) and although the subharmonics are fantastic and just what the song needs, that C2 on “shall” gives me shivers each and every time (1:00, 2:59). Cesar’s intensity and grit (2:57) show his great versatility (for a great example, contrast his texture and timbre and demeanour in “Butter” compared to this song. WOW.)
Geoff, I think this is one of the most impressive arrangements you have ever done. You have an uncanny ability to take us on amazing emotional journeys with your re-inventions and I will forever be in awe of your arranging talent.
I've spent the last hour trying to add something intelligent to the conversation but you beat me to it! One addition, extra kudos to Eli for his contribution to the lighting design, absolutely amazing! I also deeply enjoy Geoff's arrangements and the sheer volume of talent the whole team brings!
The costumes, the makeup, the special effects etc…… amazing
Never even noticed the brands until you mentioned it. That’s what makes them even better, the little things that only certain people will notice. They don’t any shortcuts.
And the fact that all of them have the brands, even though two don’t show in the video. They commit to their roles.
Very well said!
3:02 Geoff sliding up caught me off guard. Thought that was Jose at first. And then at 3:07 he goes subharmonic. Insane how he can go up and then all the way back down that quickly.
I'm not a musician or well versed in musical talent, but I have to say this group of gentlemen make my skin prickle with goosebumps whether they are Vikings, Pirates, or Disney. What voices, what talented gifts. Thank you for sharing your talents with the world.
Absolutely ❤ them all.
This performance is fantastic!!!! All of that talent! I’ll listen to this over and over! I sure could see ya’ll in a broadway play! Thank you for making me so happy❤
When Eli gets that metal edge to his voice I love it.
Same
I can see Voiceplay doing heavy metal songs cover.
true
Does not get any better.
I was just thinking Eli would make a good metal singer. He seems to be a bit of a dark horse
This could have been a complete bass showcase (and I think a lot of people were expecting that, considering all the bass-heavy covers out there), and I'm sure it still would have been amazing like that, but instead this was an absolutely perfect group piece. Everything came together in a beautiful mix of outstanding vocals, acting and excellent production. I really can't get over this one. You guys are amazing.
and that is the point imho because if let's say this was sung by a small sailor group as a choir in the well known tradition of such groups they would have plenty higher piched lads on it as well and not just the bass and baritones. and arrangement would have made use of them the way this amazingly does
I totally agree! I adore Geoff's bass, but wow! Eli's high notes, hey -= they're just great together. This is a perfect group. Layne, fantastic. But yes, I still keep coming back to Geoff. He blows my mind!
Honestly I was expecting a lower focus, also for them to somewhat stick to the intent/feel of the song and go for the constant motion constant rolling, etc feel to the original... I... honestly I actually didn't even just 'like' this one, it's actually the first one of theirs that isn't good in my opinion. Obviously just an opinion, but I was hoping for more, and less of the soloist stuff, less of the look at my jazzy style!... just meh overall I guess, maybe I'll come back in a few months and give the video a like, for now it's neither good nor bad.
Agreed! We weren't sure what to expect from a VoicePlay shanty cover. They've done a fantastic job.
man, i wana see all the bass dudes get together 🍻😎. geoff, tim, peter, bobby, colm, tomi, efi. and have a bass heavy and more authentic to the vibe of the original colab
Rest of VP: Geoff, what moments are you going to especially focus on in your arrangement?

When Eli breaks out the claw hands you know notes are gonna get hit!
It was so good to hear Eli really able to let go and give it some wellie. He's got such a powerful tenor when the music suits it.
WOW! Cesar TOTALLY held his own here! So great to see that he can match the exceptional strength of the others when he's not able to do it with high spirits, energy and a smile. It's such a high bar: Eli, Layne and Geoff each have such an intense level of crazy here, and each is so different. Yet Cesar matches them - no one is able to steal the stage from the others because their strengths are so evenly matched. Well DONE! (Don't get me wrong, I love Cesar's other performances, but this one was a whole different style).
Of the five, Cesar's character strikes me as the most tragic, as it seems he's aware of the innocence and the beauty he's lost; Jose and Goeff are in full-blown pirate mode; Eli is crazy manic, and Layne is just crazy ("Don't step on my shadow...").
well said! they make such a great crew! such an amazing blend of personal chemistry!
I am utterly speechless. That ain't easy! Bravo!!
damn the bass is really on fire...
Eli is just an absolute BEAST.
Normally I’d point out specific sections of the video with timestamps for the most incredible parts from each individual.
I can’t for this one. The *whole thing* just blew me away! 👏👏👏

I was so excited when I was listening to it that my heart skipped a beat. What I want to say out loud is that everyone's singing voices are amazing and I want to listen to them all the time. I love you all.

*Me listening to the original of this song recently*: man it would be cool if VoicePlay did a cover of this!
*VoicePlay*: hold our rum 🏴☠️
Seriously, this was an amazing cover of Hoist The Colours! Definitely my favourite arrangement of that song and every single one of you nailed it!
Also, I felt like Cesar and Jose were staring into my soul every time they looked into the camera 😅
Now give us back our rum... because rum.

Same!! Last night I told my brother they should do it! And bam they did it! Awesome!
Honestly I was listening to some other recent covers and was kinda wishing Geoff would do a cover of his own. And then Voiceplay drops this bomb, or should I say, cannonball.
Cesar freaking me out with that dead eye, Eli killing me with those vocals, Geoff burying everyone in those low tones, Layne destroying those beats, and Jose slicing the air with his sword and great beard. Love it
The Bald dude is insane
The pirate makeup is great! The song, singing and creativeness is outstanding! I posted to FB! Loved it!
I didn't know Cesar could be so menacing! And Jose, we want more Jose! Geoff's bass and Layne's drum are of course absolutely insane! But can we talk about Eli?! Oh Gosh....
Agreed, completely!
Eli made my heart skip a beat.
What did I just watch. . . . .
The trio singer (Eli, Jose, Cesar) kills the melody, that smooth blend when they sung together was just so mesmerizing.
Ofcourse, who could forget about Geoff doing stuff that are very confusing on how he does it, he sounds very atmospheric which is as a bass because you don't want singing low that the sound will not surrounds the space around you, making it hard to hear.
And lastly, Layne, I still don't know how he manages to keep the flow going because its hard as the percussion to make this compliment without overpowering someone, but still he got it very precise.
This is why I love VoicePlay so much😊😊😊
Usually people like high voices, that's what I'm used to see. I prefer bass voices, I'm just in love with this singer's bass!
I think this quintet is fantastic!
Geoff Castellucci has a solo channel as well, in case you haven't found that yet :)

Cesar’s voice is golden. Perfect blend of high and lower notes. Perfect Baritone! The rest Eli, Layne, Geoff, and Jose are FANTASTIC. Loved the performance!
A true baritone is always perfect. And no, I'm not partial at ALL. 😇
One of the things I love about VoicePlay is they cover songs I've never heard before. And make me love every note. Well done. Very Well Done.
Watching Jonathan Young's version made me want to rewatch this. No other version can compare to this
OMG! This was so MASTERFUL!!! I absolutely lost it in my reaction. This is for sure one of my top 5 from you guys! AMAZING.
Now we wait for those low notes
theres something low 😉
Geoff hitting the F1 isn’t the most impressive thing he does in this video. That just shows how amazing he is
what's more impressive is that he hit a d2 without subharmonics😱
I don't see enough people talking about Geoff SLIDING up TWO octaves effortlessly
cause it doesn't need to be said it is obvious and we all love it
I just stared speechless at the screen when this ended...I'd expected something cool but this hit me right in the gut! @VoicePlay - Seriously, guys, did you steal Jack's 'take me to what I want most' compass and follow it to some 'unearthly vocal talent' chest in a cave, or what? You're all INSANELY talented- but gotta say, jeez, Eli.... I'm not sure you're even human anymore, and Cesar... you've well and truly made your mark! A gazillion pieces of eight to you all.
First of all, I've listened to this about 10 times now and I still hear something new each time. This is such a beautifully complex arrangement, Geoff really out-did himself putting this together. I love how different it is from many other renditions of this song, some of the key shifts are *chef's kiss*.
But secondly, I love how the production came together. Jose gives off the captain vibe standing in the middle, Cesar's outfit/makeup is AWESOME and you can see him being a first mate. Geoff is like the intimidating rower. Layne and Eli look like straight baddies on their last stretch of sanity.
I have to say I really enjoyed Cesar's performance in this one, the camera shots of him were so appropriate, the stoic performance with such a haunting tune is just perfect. Okay, I'm done gushing.
Best version yet!!!!! From a singing perspective as well as a production. It keeps you captivated!!!!! Loved the different parts and keeping up with all the eargasm I was getting!!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I know nothing about the technical side of music. Heck, I know nothing about the layman’s side of music. But I know without question, this ignited an unknown soul fire in me. I’m stirred; for aCapella and specifically Voiceplay. Please never stop creating gents.
I'm gonna say I've replayed this about 5 times now and it's outstanding no better than that it absolutely epic.... Keep this up guys.... Love it.... ❤️❤️❤️

Eli absolutely kills it! There's power in that voice we don't get to see too often, and the expression on his face...it's like an evil grin, serious, even desperate... and smiling with too many teeth while belting out what's effectively a dirge.
I'll probably have 20 different comments to add on all the amazing things in this, but wanted to give a special shout-out to the INCREDIBLE TRANSITIONS/lighting/video editing! What an insane production.
There are two things in this world I can 100% rely on. The first is waking up every morning with crippling anxiety. The second is Voiceplay and their guests creating musical masterpieces every time they post. Well done!
This song really awakens something that has been asleep in me for ages - much like the Ctulhu and my soul, the uncharted waters of the north sea
“Now some men have died and some are alive” is sung so beautifully one of my favorite lines he sings
One week ago i searched this song covered by voice play and i did not find anything but look at that, my prayers come to reality
This is, without a doubt, the most epic, most amazing arrangement of this song I've ever heard. I've been in love with this song since At World's End came out, and your performance of this song blew my mind. I've never had a favorite VoicePlay song...until now. Thank you for this masterpiece! 💗
ok everyone did a great job in this song but like, ELIS VOICE JUST FITS HIS ROLE
....... 😮 JUST SAW THIS!!!!!
it's SO AWESOME, it bled my Mind. When I'm out of this COMA, I'll come back and *try* to put into words what ALL I GOT FROM IT ..... W-O-W!!!!!!!!!
❤😂❤😂❤
Eli absolutely unleashed with an appropriate touch of unhinged thrown in! WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! And Geoff busy causing earthquakes! Fantastic arrangement, excellent performance, all!!
I cannot get over how many times I am in awe of Geoff’s arranging style! It really is telling the story and as you go along, you go through almost all the parts. The beginning, rising action, climax, falling action and the ending. I always am in a state of awe with his talent. Not only does he makes it look fun, but he also keeps to the areas of focus. Keeps the audience interested and makes all the stops. 2:34 always, always gets me. Unexpected yet, incredibly good! And Eli? Fantastic choice for lead. The harmonies? I cannot get enough of. Costumes, makeup, everything! An overall astounding job and makes me appreciate the hard work all of you go through!
Masterpiece!
Geoff singing DIE, GRAVE, YO HO.....MY MY. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I love Jose and VoicePlay working together they always never cease to amaze me!!
Um... is no one going to address the fact that they used a pair of leg irons as a tambourine of sorts?!
Delightfully creative touch; I doff my hat to you gentlemen.
When you play D&D and you're the DM in a pirate campaign, and all the players in the party choose bard class characters.
I am stunned by each Voiceplay member in this one...from the high vocals of Eli, to Geoff reaching to the depths with his bass, to Cesar with the melody and harmonization, to Layne`s beatboxing...but that look that Jose flashes at 2:15 absolutely slays me!! WOW!!
"We may have gotten a little carried away with this one..." A LITTLE?! THIS IS THE BEST COVER Y'ALL HAVE EVER DONE OH MY GOD!
Did they say that somewhere?
@@Justasykoseashell the description!!!
Agreed....
The Harmony starting @2:36 between Geoff and the other guy is pure perfection.
That 'other guy' would be Layne Stein, their phenomenal vocal percussionist. 😁
@@Debs_Badger yeah he's very good
This song is the one that clued me in to Caesar's range and talent. Absolutely amazing addition to the group!
Also this is irrelevant to the song, but I love watching for the little physical quirks. Geoff and Eli use their hands a lot; Geoff seems to raise and lower his right hand as his voice raises or lowers, and Eli's hands curl into claws (that's how I think of 'em, anyway) the higher he belts, like the support for his high notes comes from his hands. I haven't found anything specific to Layne or Caesar yet. Layne's whole body seems to move to whatever beat he's doing, and it's different song to song. I'll have to rewatch to see if I can spot anything consistent.
1:12 can we just appreciate both cesar's voice and looks in this video for a moment please?
Thank you for your time
My wife and I agree that Jose looks completely at home in that outfit, as if it's not a costume, but something he wears on a regular basis! He meshes so well with this group, both musically and personality wise.
The king and his men
Stole the queen from her bed
And bound her in her bones
The seas be ours
And by the powers
Where we will, we'll roam
Yo, ho, all together
Hoist the colours high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die
Some men have died
And some are alive
And others sail on the sea
- With the keys to the cage...
And the Devil to pay
We lay to Fiddler's Green!
The bell has been raised
From it's watery grave...
Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?
We are a call to all
Pay head the squall
And turn your sail toward home!
Thanks for printing out the words. I just wish I was smart enough to get the full meaning.
@@katherinkeegan8601 I would like to know more what substances the author of this text smoked 😅
@@alexking930 I know what you mean, I wonder if the group knows the meaning. I personally would find it difficult to sing a song I didn't understand.
@@katherinkeegan8601 I can't say 😅
It makes more sense if you’ve watched the movie it’s from. Without that context, it’s more than a little hard to grasp.
After the sudden stop at the end, you can still hear the "ring" of their voices continue on!
Beautiful cover. ❤️
I love you all but damn Cesar and Eli are killing it!
The most amazing moment in the piece was when the camera was off the peripheral side of Cesar's bad eye then suddenly he sees the camera with his good eye and focuses on the viewer.. frightening.
I didn’t know I needed this but I did.
i can’t say how many times i re-listened 1:45, it’s such an incredible harmony i can’t
Holy......crap. THAT was incredible. The whole lot of them looked certifiably insane and sounded awesome. I LOVE it. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Who said #FogHorn :D
Also, evil Eli, winning my heart a bit more each time!
The voices are so deep... Davy Jones would shed a tear of joy from it.
Love all sea shanties. Love all nods to the past. Love all things pirate. Love all things alternative. You guys make my heart happy!
Pentatonix has been my fav for years, but now ... it's you guys. Except for Mitch (who is the bomb) ... you have the most pure voices. The bass, damn, I thought Avi was great. He is, but, damn Geoff!!
