Never miss a Rig Rundown: bit.ly/PG-RRnew...
Jonny Lang did a quick post-soundcheck hang with Premier Guitar at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. The Grammy winner has upgraded a few things in his rig since we last saw him, but his Fender Custom Shop Tele is never out of arm’s reach.
Lang travels light with just three guitars, switching whenever the song calls for a new, distinct voice. A longtime Tele man, Jonny has put some serious miles on this 2003 Fender Custom Shop Thinline Tele. This one-of-a-kind Tele is loaded with two Bill Lawrence humbuckers and a Duncan P-90 in the middle position. He uses D’Addario EXL 110+ (.0105-.048) strings.
On his new album, Signs, Lang spent a good deal of time on his 2000-ish Gibson 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue.

Jonny Lang is one of those rare artists who changes into something else entirely when he performs.
Yes the best. I can literally say he is a friend
I still cherish the memory of opening for him on his German tour. Super generous and total class, just a great guy and musician
This video is over three years old but I just wanna say Jonny Lang is the man and John Bohlinger is an absolute gem. Pay this man whatever he asks for.
Jonny is going through a tough time right now. Having issues with his voice, IIRC. Had to take all of 2021 off and doesn't know if he will even be back after that or something. I can't even imagine what hes going through right now.
"board lights up, that's pretty pimp. I like that" I love this host he's got just the right amount of knowledge, little star struck, personality and cool at the same time
Such a distinctive guitar player..underrated..I dig it. Keep jamming Jonny!
Unfortunately probably won't.
Nice guy and great player. Bohlinger is perfect for guys like this. Helping him a long a little without getting in the way at all. Very relaxed interview and a pleasure to watch.
Ace Bohlinger is the man!
Totally agree!
Yea.....yea.....that's cool!.....yea cool.....yea ok...........cool! Yea that's great
Lang is such a cool dude, an amazing guitarist and a hell of a singer!!!
Just love him.
I saw this cat on the Hendrix Tour a few years back. He came out and started playing with a freakin amazing tone....then he stepped to the mike and started signing and the place went nuts (well the ladies anyway). Awesome blues voice!
I agree. His singing tone compared to his regular talking tone is crazy. Its great.
Kid knows he melts the muff bro!!! Imagine being a hit artist at 16.. IN fuken 99 bro!!! What a time to be climbing the charts an rocking shows
He plays mostly with his fingers, but he palms a pick as well. He gets so many tones out of his guitars, he doesn't seem to need too many pedals. There's no delay, verb or modulation, just Johnny. Impressive.
Happy to finally come across this video - I remember a young 16 year old kid out of Fargo, about 2 hours from me, called Kid Jonny Lang and the Big Bang, or something like that. Went to his show and then, of course, I got the record, loved it. Fan ever since. Love the "it's just the way it came" guitar vibe.
When it comes to Johnny, his “rig rundown” doesn’t really matter and that’s simply because of the fact that he is one of those rare individuals that could make anything sound absolutely killer
Jonny seems like a really nice laid back guy! Fabulous player! Great interview job JB!
you know...blues lovers!!.....if yall really want to see what mountains...johnny has climbed...you need to see his show...in 1999...at montreau.....he was about 21 or 22...back then....and that show waz just incredible!!...now we move foward 20 years..LATER......and HES BREAKIN ALL THE RULES NOW...SUCH A...such...a blues... BAD ASS!!!.
Jonny Lang is a nice, humble, talented guy. Great interview by Mr. Bohlinger--I always like his interviews. My cousin worked at a golf course in Litchfield Park Arizona. He was playing one day and got paired with Jonny. Of course my cousin had no idea who he was and asked Jonny what he did. Jonny told him he was a musician and was in town for a gig. My cousin said he was the nicest kid and had a lot of fun playing golf with him. My cousin asked me a few days later if I knew who Jonny Lang was and told me the story. Wish I had been there that day.
That’s a great story! Very cool.
thats pretty cool, i got some old track wanna play today before i split.
He had me with “Lie to Me!!!
lol "it lights up, that's pimp" Johnny super underrated
From very young this old soul, Lang has had the deepest blue feel, no matter his topic, he plays it deep, wide and real. My favorites are the songs on the trail. Don't stop... Wander this world, many many more... have a big stack of his CDs got 'em as they came out. Thankful to relate, gives me confirmation, these deepest blues we rise above. Be well all. ~RaVen~
The complete opposite of Joe Bonamassa who's a guitar nerd. Not Jonny. He plugs in and knows if it sounds like he wants it to even though he doesn't give a crap how he's getting that tone.
Russell Moker yea Jonny's a cool guy. And has been playing longer or around the same time as Joe. Jonny's just a naturally cool guy. Joe's well not. Somehow joe made it bigger where Jonny seems to be playing smaller gigs. Less known. Should be way more famous but I like when they haven't made it so big that they become self absorbed and obnoxious.
Wait, it's bad to really really care about guitars and amps? You're using that as a negative?
i wouldn't buy into that cool guy act
why does joe bonamassa get brought up so much. you know im as rock n roll as it gets. started off playing in johnny thunders punk bands 10 years ago now im a bonified guitar slinger. and i can honestly say that i think joe bonamassa is a cool guy and i wish he would get a show on history channel
@@marcstanford5857 Joe's smart and isn't trying to be "cool". He hooked up with a good manager who is responsible for most of his success. Check out the documentary on it: ruclips.net/video/8sPti6uhTCs/видео.html
I have him a ride with Lyft. Super humble, no ego. Such a nice guy and totally put up with my fan boyness.
Bohlinger is hands down the best guy on the internet at this.
Amazing talent and humble. Doing a great job representing North Dakota
good to see this, he sounds like a truly genuine, humble kinda of guy.
Bohlinger is great at interviews. Very likable but never fake. Just seems like a nice dude. He makes the interview e relax and open up.
Jonny + his lp is an exceptionally awesome combination , how cool is that!
The guy doing the interview is so cool because he really respects and lets the guest express themselves unlike so many others.
Mr Lang....still a blues kid....Love it....
Great video... reminded me how important that Octave sound is for blues. Thanks!
Humble dude. I've been a fan for quite some years.
I love that blues board.
Good ol' Johnny Lang, quietly going about his business being stone cold awesome for like 20 years now. Gonna be a weird day when he and KWS are in their 40s and they've been at it for more like 30 years! lol
Anywho, great little rundown, everybody keep up the good work!
[The password is "taste test."]
yobhsiFehT don't forget Derek Trucks :-)
Yeah, now, don't get me wrong, I think Trucks is the best player (and my personal favorite of my generation), but I don't think he hit as big as soon as the other "young guns," did he.?.
yobhsiFehT dunno, but I think in terms of recognition, he's as well known as those two. If he didn't join the Allmans and concentrated on solo, he'd be more well known than he currently is. But it would be a damn shame if he never joined the Allmans!
I think he's probably (hopefully?) MORE well-known than them now, I just mean 15-20 years ago, ya know.?. All good, tho :)
yobhsiFehT as long as they don't get on a helichopper or a small aeroplane , they should be fine , hell they might even merge into one being, mmmm
Absolutely no questions you need to do a rig rundown with Mike McCready!
Patrick Kowalchuk please please would be amazing
two John's. both dressed pretty much the exact same. both have pretty much the exact same "cool man!" disposition. very cool RR.
Just in case you were wondering. There were two COB pedals for sale on Reverb, one for $1,500, the other for $1,200!
Same rig from 3 years ago🤘🏻
Please--and I mean this with total sincerity--make a t-shirt with John's face on it and a word bubble saying, "That's pretty pimp." I promise I would wear it every day. EVERY. DAY.
What about "Drum Machine!!"???
Yeah, yeah. Cool. That's great, man. Awesome, cool, cool. Yeah.
Ha! I could settle for that--this might have to become an entire clothing line of classic Bohlinger-isms.
The back has to say "Lets have a taste test" haha, I'd rock that shirt for sure
I think it should just say "That sounds Killer!" because he says it on every single rig rundown ever.
gotta love John interviewing chill guys.
johnny lang was also the guy who made me want a thinline telecaster more than anything after i seen him on the blues brothers 2 film
I love Jonny Lang, If John could jam with him it would be even better. When John jams it's always good as well.
Great to see him play a Les paul!Sounds a lot less like SRV which is always a good thing.SRV was amazing but theres to many clones out there.
Johnny's still great! In addition to be a killer player/singer, he's also got the best guitar faces!
Damn that Jonny Lang has a heavy attack. Nice normal guy who hasn't lost his head too. Ace Bolhlinger is the man!
Yeah, noticed he's chopping and slicing with the pick (when he uses one), way back by the bridge, too.
Jonny seems like a nice guy
He is really nice guy and his voice is amazing keep it coming
He just made that thing seeing it was screaming the words out that guy is got so much talent
"Please don't touch my guitar 😦"
"Please don't drop my guitar 😦"
Nice to see someone without tons of unnecessary gear.
Other than that pedal board full of stuff...
That's just some boost pedals and a wah. Very basic.
He doesn't really need delays, chorus, or envelope pedals for his style of music. he's mostly about " tone ".
Man your vocal tones is a whole bunch of something else to your talking voice 🔥🔥👊🏽☮️
This is a musician, that takes care of his instruments. Having a R9 on stage for >> 10 years and she is still in (at least) mint condition, speaks for the man, aside from his playing abilities...
Gotta love JL been a fan since Lie to me....Just saw a couple months ago in a smaller venue ,what a treat
always loved the sound Jonny gets out of his guitar and now i know why. The COB Pedal Octave Boost and the Fulltone Ultimate Octave are in fact cool sounding Pedals to boost a clean guitar.Thanx for this guitar rigdown !
my les paul gold top is really heavy especially when u play it for 3/4 hours
i kinda like like the action almost like my martin d-28
good bars when the action works well
my ovation hard hard action and the round bottom slips off when u sit down. it's same ovation natalie's guitarist had on tiger lily c d
What a nice guy!
What a great guy!
love these Rig Rundowns
Bohlinger, love your shirt !! Back in America I always used to say: you aint much if you aint Dutch 😜
All of them should be demos like this of everything.
Damn! Just the amp playing clean sounded amazing.
My oh my he's growin up!
the return of the Von Dutch t-shirt
Size Xtra Small
wolfey41 yeah yeah cool cool man !
Got me TONE DRUNK again John! Taste da Wine! nice rundown again.
is it just me or does jonny lang not know hes jonny lang!...seems like he is so grounded...ps dont touch the mans guitar!!!!!
Wow,I rarely see Jonny on a Gibson, mostly playing on his Telecaster, but sounds great on ANYTHING. My buddy had a 57 les Paul he got a steal on from an old guy in Wyoming for $100! Unbelievable. Unfortunately someone broke in his home and ripped it off!. Jonny is so casual about his equipment but who cares, the sound is great and his playing is great.
Hendrix was famous for using the out-of-phase position. But he did it with a modified 3way switch he could set between the neck and middle pickup. Oh and you're going to need a fuzz face with special gallium oxide transistors.
lol i Love this dude interviewing lol..pure as hell lol
great interview and I want that gear, too. I'm a huge JL fan - can't wait to see him again in September to celebrate my birthday!
Super nice guy
We’re from the same town!
LOVE YOU💖
NEW ALBUM TOMORROW!!!!!! Booyah!!!!!!!
.
.
JL
doin' the work over days, week and years
play on...
.
.
JL is a really nice guy. ❤
Wait! That guy is 36? He still looks and sounds like a teenager =P
Lukas K mr.Bolinger is 68
gus dupree bolinger isn't 68
+gus dupree John Bohlinger (born c. 1967) Same age as my father. 50.
Lukas K your dad and Bolinger are both far, far older son , fake news , did you know he played the main riff on satisfaction, he wrote most of the white album, and invented the printing press with which he produced the first issue of playboy that he then loaned to Ben Franklin, who promptly discovered electricity, humph, kids
Lukas K lang had a 67 year old voice at 13.
Needed a mic on the amp. Jonny's great, and deserved a better sounding rig rundown.
It is so weird being here early
Heard about this guy on Disney channel many years ago.
Nathan Brown me too, barefoot & all
Not a tele guy
But holy shite that's a beautiful tele
This dude proves reincarnation... he was playing and singing like an old blues dude when he was 12
In flames rig rundown
Cool cat
Gotta get a Dynamic Wah now. Too lazy to use my foot!
Awesome fingers! ;)
Very cool - thanks for this vid. I wish you could get the mics on the amps from FOH so we could hear the tones more in situ.
Oh Jonny, I've loved you since you were a pip-squeak! I need to fly out to Nashville and give you a different hair style though...
Babette LeBlanc his hair is cool Babette ;)
Stop, I love his hair!
QTIP SOY BOY HAIR...LIKE A LIBTARD FREAK!..HE NEEEDS IT FIXED
Aww thanks Mom 😊
@@runnningonempty - As much as I love Jonny (he's truly one of a kind unique for guitar players of today. His vocals ain't bad either!), he really could use a better style. He's tried it long, then short, then long, etc.. Looks much better with a good cut.
You nailed it with the Libtard look comparison. Because he is a pretty liberal fella by the looks of things. He's, of course, all about the lib social justice semi-bs and everybody being equal, blah blah blah, etc. racial equality going along with the fake "racism is widespread in America" lies and propaganda. I have a hard time overlooking this type farce bs crap with most musicians and fake ass Hollywood "elite" celebs but can cut Jonny a break because he really is so very genuine.
" Yeah....Yeah !! "
Yeah man....
Guitar players love their pots and switches, don't they? He seems normal. What's wrong with him? ;-)
Flavors of Hendrix and Voodoo Child Slight Return...nice.
Him and every other clone of that lineage, going back to Robin Trower..
excellent rig rundown I'm a big fan!! how about a Tracii Guns Rig rundown!!
that stuff he was playing at the start sounded like a really funky chicken
Never once did he bring up the reverb
Waka! Waka!
Should do one with Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Joe Bonamassa
Hah! I was at this show! Unfortunately they were pushing the mains a little to hard to hear nuances very well but good show regardless.
Do you remember if the reverb was too much?
@@LikeigiveAFaboutU Well, Schermerhorn has a bit of an odd natural reverb and I was wondering if it is causing some kind of comb filtering effect. But it is one of those rare times where I say something actually can be too loud.
During quieter bits it was very clear, so there's that.
But... maybe they were adding reverb out of habit or something.
@@DJEshelman-personal sounds right to me. Yeah the verb in the video sounds like alot for that room
its kind of like the Mckalley Calken....home alone...with the blues hour...
This video was brought to you by the phrase, "Taste Test" ...
the Macaulay Culkin of blues
Whoa there Jonny don't piss in the Kool-Aid by suggesting that your 59 re-issue Les Paul sounds so good because it's Light weight. You'll trigger the corksniffers that believe a Paul has to be 9 pound plus to even sustain or sound awesome. You dodged a bullet there. They would have said all your experience means nothing...lmao
So, he's taken the exact opposite position. Sounds like someone else is cork sniffing. Guitars are made of wood, it's organic, and no two are exactly the same. Some frequencies will be dampened, others will resonate. What matters is that the construction be solid.
niceeeee Premier guitar!!
I guess you heard this a lot...
but i think everybody agrees hahahaha...
New John mayer rundown?? :) :) :)
Rebecca Dirks was the best interviewer
jairo salmeron omg move on she does tone report.
'Tried and true.'
Hey Premier Guitar, ever approached Radiohead for a rundown? I would say it would be a long episode but an interesting one..
Radiohead is the worst shit ever. There is zero reason to talk to them.
nice handshake, lol. good to know.
can you do one on chris duarte or ian moore? thank you
Jason Moore nice. I love both of them. Plus this guy here Jonny. 🎸👍Ian and Chris and Jonny completely underrated. Check out Mato Nanji from indigenous. I have a feeling u know him already.
Ian moore who be super cool!
Who?
