As Barbra Streisand said: “There are good singers, there are great singers, and then there is Johnny Mathis.” Enough said.
FYI - Mr. Mathis held the last note for 8 full measures. For those unfamiliar with the intricacies of music, that equals 32 beats. What makes it impressive is the tempo (speed) of the song is about 70 beats per minute. That is a slow Andante tempo which one can characterize as a slow walking speed. It can only be pulled of by a superbly trained musician, with a voice in tip top shape, with a highly refined sense of style.
This is 2024 and I would love it if JM WOULD record a new set of duets or do so in live concerts . I truly believe JM CAN sing with anyone❤
And he STILL has not received a Kennedy Center honor. But LL Cool J has. SHAMEFUL! I will not watch another Honors show until Johnny is recognized.
Johnny Mathis is the best singer in the world, don't you agree?
The bible says your gift makes room for you. Johnny has that gift. His musical legacy will long be remembered throughout eternity!
The problem with Johnny is: once you listen to him, no other singer will ever do, all I ever want is to listen to him - over and over and over!
The Kennedy Center Committee should include Johnny Mathis as an honoree. He is a great talent and a great American!
This is probably the greatest live performance on a tv show in this lifetime. Incredible!!!
JM held it for 28 seconds. Try it. JC said "I thought you were going to hold it until the next earthquake".
Years later, JC stated that he thought that was the greatest vocal performance on his stage...of all time. Who can deny that??
First heard this song and the superb album it comes from when I was 20 and very much in love.I am 84 now and still think Mathis is magic.
He has no peer. Never has. Superior musician with a painfully beautiful voice like no other.
His voice is like a heavenly musical instrument. He is incomparable!
The last note was the Longest note ever recorded on a live show.
Love that "nailed it" look on his face after that killer last note!
Nobody sings like Johnny ❤ I’ve loved his voice and songs since I was a teenager (I’m 76 now)
I WAS ON THAT SHOW, OVER 20 YRS. AGO IN THE REHEARSAL OF PIECES OF DREAMS, ON THE JOHNNY CARSON SHOW!! MR. MATHIS SANG THIS SONG, SO MEZMERIZINGLY, AND EFFORTLESSLY, BEAUTIFUL, I WAS SPEECHLESS THEN!! AND STILL SPEECHLESS, ALL THESE YRS. LATER!! NOT ONLY IS HE UNMATCHED, AS THE GREATEST SINGER, OF ALL TIME!!, HE ALSO IS SIMPLY, GORGEOUS TO LOOK AT!!
This is one of the greatest live performances in the history of popular music. The close is without peer, anywhere, by any performer.
I attended a "Valentine's Day" concert by Johnny Mathis at Alice Tully Hall in Manhattan's Lincoln Center on Thursday, 24 Jan 74.
I'm only 28 but I grew up on Johnny Mathis. I used to dance around the house to all his records. My mom took me to my first concert when I was 11. There is absolutely no one that can touch him. There's not a singer out there today could even come close to his voice. It's pure magic.
