I loved playing this growing up. It's crazy how I've never talked about this game to anyone outside of my family and I've never heard any else talk about it until now. So many Thrillville enjoyers here that we can make our own Thrillville.
Always had fun playing this growing up too. None of my friends ever brought up playing this though, so i kept it to myself. But sitting down for hours and making a theme park EXACTLY the way i wanted was great.
this game was so undeservedly unpopular and it had better graphics and a lot more going on than roller coaster tycoon and other amusement park games. not even star wars fanatics have heard of this game despite being made by Lucasarts too
Maaaaaaan I remember playing Off the Rails as a kid. Let's be real, most kids probably never even understood the "Park Management" part of the game. We just wanted to play Bandito Chinchilla for the 50th time in a row. But that's what I loved about it. You could still have a ridiculous amount of fun with the game, even if your park wasn't 100% perfect.
During my second or third playthrough of the game I discovered combos for each character in Bandito Chinchilla. The minigame rewarded discovery with unique animations for most playable characters
Played Off The Rails on the Wii, it was such a charming and rather specific kind of game, almost as it was specifically made for me. The variety was all over the place and yeah, the minigames were stuff you played before but they were still super addictive.
Playing on Wii was such a strange and fun experience. I remember going into the coaster builder and making the craziest looking coasters due to the nature of the wii remote 🤣
Thrillville was literally my childhood... it was **everything** to me, the minigames esp. and the mad scientist vs. GloboCorp are such vivid happy memories.
For me it was Off The Rails that took up all my time. One of my deepest memories is a weird moment when I heard music from another game that was my childhood, Secret Weapons over Normandy, in the plane mini games. It was surreal to say the least.
omg i LOVED Off the Rails as a kid. when i was really young, i wrote Thrillville fan fiction (which is hilarious) and that shows how immersed i was in this silly little game. it’s been 17 years and i still get the Bandito Chinchilla theme stuck in my head randomly sometimes. now i want to fire up Thrillville again after watching this video
I worked on the QA team on Thrillville: Off the rails. I suppressed that memory long ago. And you just had to dig it back up. Damn you Buns! DAMN YOU TO HEEEEEEELL!!!!! glad your back though, love your videos.
@@tmnt_and1445 As QA work goes it was pretty good. They rotated us on a few games, so got to see some games that were never released, or that were way better before release. The whole Lucas Arts campus was gorgeous with an amazing cafeteria. Though EAs was better in my opinion. Gave a nice discount on merch so I bought some of those beast ass lightsabers for a good price. And a few ghost stories on overtime hours. It was built over an old war hospital so it was basically obligatory.
I'm 27 years old and I STILL play Off the Rails damn near every week. It was always my fun/chill comfort game that I could never go wrong with. And the fresh coat of paint that it had over the first really made it pop. Playing it on next gen right now is incredibly cool too. Also...THE SOUNDTRACK ON BOTH GAMES, THOOO
I remember playing this game religiously when I was a kid. Just the fact that I ran my own theme parks and was able to ride and play the games was amazing. I always loved playing all the shootzones
One of the things I remember most about the OG Thrillville besides the mini-games, is they had that Honky Tonk Badonkadonk song in it on the soundtrack, a song about a guy talking about a woman's big butt, that was somehow approved to be put in a game aimed mostly for kids.
In Smackdown vs Raw 2007, a pro wrestling video game, there is a song on the soundtrack titled "Forgive Me" by the band "Versus the World" If you listen to the lyrics, you quickly realize the song is about a man preparing to hang himself and end his own life, begging those he'll leave behind to forgive him. Not just does a song like that not fit a sports game, but a pro wrestler by the name of Chris Benoit, who would make his final video game appearance here, would murder his wife and son only to than hang himself afterward just after the game released.....
I'm pretty sure Badonkadonk was also featured in Ms. Splosion Man, the game used it to make fun of you for skipping ahead to the next checkpoint, along with making the player character's butt super big and taking away all your points at the end and calling you a cheater. Man, writing this now reminded me how brutal that game is.
You just unlocked core memories for me. I almost exclusively just made coasters as deranged as possible and then would ride them in POV mode and then spend hours customizing the look and color. I remember playing a few of the mini games on Off the Rails, but I spent most of the time in the character creation menu or riding the rides I made. The music also slapped so hard, so I remember jamming to it a lot. I almost never left the “testing” mode.
Wow that unlocked a core memory. I loved Thrillville as a kid and making the coasters and playing the micro games was awesome. It is kind of sad that we never really got other games that had it so you could see things from the guest level with playing as the park manager. It helped give the player a personal connection to the guests with the social system, and also gave a valid way to have a story mode unlike most other theme park games where you either feel disconnected from it (Jurassic World) or they don't even bother (insert most theme park games). Hopefully someone catches on to this idea becuase I think under the right management it could do very well in this day and age.
I spent hours every day as a kid playing the cheerleader minigame on the original thrillville. I was obsessed, and it sparked a love of rhythm games for years to come. Oh and there were coasters. That was neat I guess.
There’s a song from Off the Rails called My Gurlz and I, being absolutely deranged and disturbed, learned and memorized the entire song. I used to make my friends listen to me do it over and over again. This game will never die, I won’t allow it to.
The bun has graced us on this holy day with a brand new vid at last, buckle up you all Also Merry Christmas everyone! I hope your day is filled with jingles and bliss (unless you have sensitive hearing, then just a peaceful one) 🎉🎉🎉
It is surreal to me how many of these do you remember videos I watch where I can say yes I do. Or in this game's case, I remember one song that would always play that went, "Suddenly I see(I see) This where I want to be." Happy Holidays everyone.
This song came on at my old job one day and I was losing my mind knowing I recognized it, and I finally found it on the soundtrack of the game! Brought so many memories back
That thumbnail brought back some good memories. I owned the PSP version when I was a kid, and after playing the console versions later in life, I'm shocked how...close it is to those versions. Aside from the obviously downgraded graphics and lack of voice acting, it's pretty feature-complete. Thanks for the fun vid, Buns. Also, quick correction: Frontier only worked on RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and the original Xbox port of the first RCT. The first two games were made by Chris Sawyer.
the other day i was walking my dog and my mind wandered into thinking about Thrillville. i still remember the money cheat (square circle triangle, square circle triangle, x!) and the sounds the menu would make when inputting them. i thought about how weird the game's romance system was, and how it probably ruined my perception of how dating worked (though not as much as club penguin). but it really made me think how a game like that could never exist nowadays the way it had then with its ridiculous marketing and absolutely crammed to the top amount of different things you could do. it's been a while since i've seen an ad for something that genuinely tried to be fun
I still sometimes think back to this game. I played the heck out of it as a kid and my favorite minigames would have to be the first-person shooting games. What was cool is each type of shooting location changed your guns and enemies, which felt really cool.
My best friend and I LOVED the hell out of Thrillville, we would create these insane roller coaster rides and when we were done making them, we would turn on the first person camera and pretend like we were on them. I might have to get this game again just for the nostalgia alone. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone!
I do remember that theme song that I could never get out of my head as a kid. Plus the Whoa Coasters. Those were definitely pieces that would never be allowed in any coaster design.
I spent hours my ps2 with this. Loved how you could just make out w random guests lmao i also loved making the most nausea inducing coasters. I LOVED the theming of the lands! The music from each was so much fun!
i never heard that line before! i believe i had this game for the PSP? i cant remember. but i believe they didnt have any voice acting..... edit. Thrillville Off The Rails is what i had. thx
That robot shooting arcade game was the game me and my brother's played the most. So much fun. Also that platformer where you collect animals and when you get them all the round ends and like an invincible thing comes in and makes you go to the exit
I loved playing the shooting games and the one where you have to play medieval/olympian themed soldiers fighting monsters. The UFO and RC demo derby games were fun too. Definitely a classic.
I'M UP! 🤩 I know nothing about thrillville and sims aren't my kind of game, but your delivery of well everything had me smiling throughout the whole video. Thank you for the long in depth videos this year. Analysis combined with your humor immaculate. Also for everything else you make from several long streams to the occasional sparky comment on social media. You make my life so much brighter with everything you make.
I think I remember the Mitchel Musso commercial you mentioned. It either had Mitchel Musso interviewing other teens, or several Disney stars being interviewed, about what they like about the game. I distinctly remember one person talking about the dating system.
I thought I was the only one who remembered these games but no one I knew heard of them, so for the longest time I thought I was hallucinating them as some sort of fever dream. XD Playing these with cousins was some of the most fun I've had since I absolutely loved playing the OG Rollercoaster Tycoon.
I had Thrillville: Off the Rails for my Wii back in the day and I remember loving it, but watching this video made me realize that I’m pretty sure I barely paid attention to the happiness of the guests and instead just built a couple minigame areas and played those.
Something I so vividly remember about these two games were the very creative maps and all the stuff going on in the background. Made it so cool to unlock new parks!
Oh yeah, I vividly remember trying to make sure my coasters went near or highlighted the giant animatronics in the area, which was... admittedly a lot harder in the original than the second lol
Gosh, Off The Rails really ate up most of my childhood and I agree, that fast food mini game with the Madagascar soundtrack playing in the background was addictive.
I remember the Mitchell Muso commerical too. I don't know if it was for the original or Off the Rails, but I remember they made him into an avatar that ran around the park and talked about the game. It was weird. Couldn't find it though.
The only amusement park sim of my childhood was the 1994 OG Theme Park, but this looks like a very charming game for a younger generation with a very fun addition in walking around it yourself. Though hearing the franchise is now in the hands of Disney makes me wonder if they'd ever ressurrect it without turning it into a Disney-themed theme park game, and I wonder if it'd be the same then...
Thanks for this nostalgic and hilarious trip down memory lane Buns. I used to play the shit out of Thrillvile Off the Rails as a young lad. It definitely holds a special place in my heart. And thanks for reminding me about it kickass soundtrack, I'm going to go listen to it right now. Also I'm with ya on hoping this series can come back or get a legit spiritual successor, I'm so down for that and would playit in an instant.
Heck yeah I still remember this. My first LucasArts and Frontier game. Had a lot of fun with these games. I even scoured the internet to find an old commercial for the game and upload it here because it wasn't on RUclips. Also, most mid 2000s soundtrack I've ever heard that wasn't a Tony Hawk game. Just... perfection.
Replayed Thrillville 1 and 2 this year. Loved throughly and even got to show some friends it for the first time. Always enjoyed how everything was a mini game instead of pure simulator.
Wow, Buns, Thrillville used to be one of the games that me, my sister and cousins just loved playing through and experimenting on PS2. Honestly hope Disney might actually revive this game someday. Merry Christmas!
I never really liked Thrillville as a kid despite having Off the rails for my PS2. But I was absolutely obsessed with Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, and why is it only now that I recognise the artstyle and graphics for the game to be nearly identical.
OMG BUNS! You Unlocked Core Childhood MEM for ME!! I very much remembered the mini game shown at 4:53 but could never find it again later because I lost my PSP. I would have never found it if not for this VIDEO. I put so many hours into Trojan Quest and the other mini games and am so happy I know where to find them again! THANKS YOUUU
I played Off the Rails on the Wii many years back. Honestly, I dont know how I managed to get to Park 5, but I did. Also, Sparkle Island and Quest...fascinated me as a kid. Like "Ooh, shoot the blobs and collect the birdies and make it to the exit, this is nice and charmi-OH GREAT GOD WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING?! WHY IS IT MAKING THESE NOISES?! WHY IS IT KILLING THE BIRDIES?! DID IT JUST SPAWN ON TOP OF ME AND KILL ME INSTANTLY THATS NOT FAIR!" and other such expletives.
I had the PC one. Whenever I googled it I just got rollercoaster tycoon, I genuinely just gave up and thought I must've confused the two. So this makes me very happy and seen.
I also feel like that Mitchel Musso commercial must have been real because for some reason I see him walking through a very obvious green-screen park in my mind's eye trying to remember anything about it. If Defunctland has taught me nothing else; it's oddly the most important thing that we record Ads because otherwise we lose so much important history of culture.
Literally thought I was the only one who knew this game. This video was SO WELL DONE. I was laughing and crying at the nostalgia the whole time. Thank you !!!!!
I’m so glad you mentioned the soundtrack having a Lily Allen song in it. This game actually introduced younger me to her music, and now she’s my most listened to artist on Spotify.
As a Thrillville fan, I definitely noticed you were using off the rails footage. It actually irritated me at first because I didn't realize you were going to eventually cover off the rails and thought you used the footage by mistake!
I remember playing this game when I was only 3. I was too young to understand the coaster building mechanic, so I asked my mom for help. The end result was a completely flat coaster with no ups or downs, just a plain oval. I thought it was really funny how the ride ended up being super popular.
It's hilarious that I was JUST looking up videos of this game just recently! I miss this series dearly. It's one of those games that if it would have came out today with some modern functionality like online, it would have been even more successful.
I'm pretty sure I played a rented a copy of Thrillville from the video store and made coasters that threw the guests across the park at high speed, and I can't say of it was intentional or if I was just bad at making coasters.
I think I just had the normal ThrillVille for PS2. It was still fun though. Loved making random roller coasters and all the rides and all the stalls and everything. It was fun.
I found the first game in a thrift store while looking for games to get for my, at the time, newly acquired PS2. Genuinely thought it was one of those "shovelware" type games because I never grew up with PlayStation and was never in the loop about news; surprised to know it was actually quite popular.
Everytime Buns comes out with a 'Do you remember X' vid it hits me like a slice of cheese being tossed at a cat. Its a weird feeling but I did miss it, love ya work buns
Oh the memories with this game. Playing this on my dad's xbox 360. God it was fun making rollercoasters that clearly made people sick but i fucking loved it
This game was awesome, I used to rent it out from the local library to play when I was younger! I remember my brother was also obsessed with this game, and we rarely liked the same type of games! So this game holds a fond place in my memory because of that 🙂
Me definitely remember that Or if playing as a girl flirting with other girls boyfriends them saying "Will you please stop flirting with my boyfriend before I do something I'll regret later" 😂 @@Mexicangunner123
4:27 reminds me when I went to my home park six flags st louis and someone was screaming on the ninja before it even left the station. He probably knew what was ahead of him on that ride. Probably got a headache for the rest of the day.
Literally a childhood game for me--funnily enough the PS2 release of Off the Rails recycled all the old assets from Thrillville 1 so I was so confused looking at the 360 footage because my game DEFINITELY didn't look like that. Straight banger of a soundtrack though.
This game was my life from like kindergarten to second grade. I would spend most of my time playing the western bot shooter game and the biker one. In the first grade i had a crush on the student teacher, so I pulled out a line from the thrillville flirt feature “girl you couldn’t go to Antarctica, you’re so hot you’d melt all the ice!”😂
i remember being so excited for thrillville as a kid, mainly cause i wanted to play a theme park management game like rollercoaster tycoon but didn't have a computer, so getting to play it and it's sequel was a blast! looking at other games of the genre, it may not be the deepest of it's genre as far as management sims goes, but i think it makes up for it with variety and even charm imo. you don't just manage your park, you experience it by also riding rides, playing games, and talking to guests (with sometimes sharp comebacks haha) hell, most if not all of the minigames have a multiplayer mode so you can also count the game as a decent party game and the soundtracks on both games were quite good, both licensed and in-house music. they even have a rhythm minigame to prove it yeah, may have gushed about this game too much, but i guess it was the realization that i actually really love these games. even played them both 100% a few years back and may do it again! tl;dr - both games are really good, kinda underrated, and we need a sequel, preferably with less heteronormativity in matchmaking 😆
Off the Rails was the first game I bought for the PS2 as a kid. My brother and I spent hours playing the minigames - specifically Stunt Rider and Event Horizon! I had 3 save files that I completed 100%, I was obsessed!
This was back when game devs actually cared about their games Nowadays, it's all about money Release a half functioning game, update it a few times, abandon ship
I loved this game as a kid and I always enjoyed playing the entertaining game just to play the rhythm game. They really did amp up the music in off the rails and because of this game I went through a Miley Cyrus phase.
some of the thrillville and off the rails minigames could be stand alone games of their own. i loved the ww2 fighter plane game Luftwaffe 109 & Luftwaffe 2 so much. seriously the devs knew how fun Luftwaffe 109 was that they hid the extra hard version in party play behind the 100% completion unlock.
this was incredible thank you so much for this gift buns i loved thrillville off the rails and having you do this vid was awesome as always your vids are hilarious and had incredible editing bless up and merry christmas/happy holidays to you and yours
OKAY BUT BOTH THE FIRST AND SECOND GAME WAS MY CHILDHOOD I’M SO GLAD SOMEONE ELSE FINALLY REMEMBERS THRILLVILLE Also cancel Jake Martinez man’s into naked babies
Well this is one hell of a Christmas gift, Thanks Buns 🙏. I was going to make a joke about you being Santa Claus but now that I think about it I don't think I've ever seen you and Santa Claus in the same room 🤔
Back in the days I annoyed the everliving shit out of my mother to buy me this game because you could talk to visitors. Then i finally got it, played it for 20min and grew bored of it and never touched it again. Good times
Thrillville Off the Rails was my all time favorite game as a kid! Me and my sister would sit and play the cheerleading, platforming, and motorbike minigames for hours on end! Plus the Whoa coasters were my everything!
I adore Off the Rails on the DS, it was something me and my late grandmother bonded over and she ended up gifting her copy to me for my birthday once. I'll always have a lot of fondness for it, as it reminds me of her.
I think I was only vaguely aware of the name Thrillville until now, but this looks like it could be fun even today for someone like me who never knew about it. Reminds me of my time playing Sim Theme Park and running around in first-person, checking out the parks I had slapped together. You could ride the rides in that one too, but it sadly never has the amazing abundance of minigames that Thrillville has.

XD
Playing these with cousins was some of the most fun I've had since I absolutely loved playing the OG Rollercoaster Tycoon.
I had Thrillville: Off the Rails for my Wii back in the day and I remember loving it, but watching this video made me realize that I’m pretty sure I barely paid attention to the happiness of the guests and instead just built a couple minigame areas and played those.
The soundtrack to the original Thrillville still lives rent-free in my head. It's powerful stuff. Sorta.
@@sleepythemis my favorite was the area with a huge cliff, I don't remember much else about it tho. I think there was a waterfall
@@HighTechCinnamon The first thing I always remember is the giant spider from the first game 😭
Merry Christmas!
buns' journey to becoming an army is truly hidden lore
No other theme park game has ever been like Thrillville and I whole heartedly miss the stupid silly fun of it
I never really liked Thrillville as a kid despite having Off the rails for my PS2.
I absolutely love the narration, energy and pure chaos you inject into these videos 😂❤️
I had the PC one. Whenever I googled it I just got rollercoaster tycoon, I genuinely just gave up and thought I must've confused the two. So this makes me very happy and seen.
I LOVED this game as a kid. I swear we grew up during the best era of gaming!
For me, I fondly remember playing thrillville on the PSP and just recently got back into it on ppsspp.
Being such a roller coaster tycoon fan as a kid but having no knowledge of PC I can say. This. Was. My. GAME
So this game holds a fond place in my memory because of that 🙂
The vendor tendor minigame is actually a cheap Puzzle Bobble clone. There! Glad I got it out of my system.
ok but who else remembers running their park and then flirting with the guy guests while they were literally holding hands with their gf 😭
Vice versa but yeah💀😭
Me definitely remember that
Or if playing as a girl flirting with other girls boyfriends them saying "Will you please stop flirting with my boyfriend before I do something I'll regret later" 😂 @@Mexicangunner123
4:27 reminds me when I went to my home park six flags st louis and someone was screaming on the ninja before it even left the station. He probably knew what was ahead of him on that ride. Probably got a headache for the rest of the day.
Both games are now available on the Playstaion Store. She did it again. Truly amazing 👏
Christ this brought back some memories of playing this on the wii as a kid.
This is a wonderful thing to wake up to on Christmas! Nice video as always Buns and I hope that you have a Merry Christmas!
Chad
i remember being so excited for thrillville as a kid, mainly cause i wanted to play a theme park management game like rollercoaster tycoon but didn't have a computer, so getting to play it and it's sequel was a blast!
looking at other games of the genre, it may not be the deepest of it's genre as far as management sims goes, but i think it makes up for it with variety and even charm imo. you don't just manage your park, you experience it by also riding rides, playing games, and talking to guests (with sometimes sharp comebacks haha)
hell, most if not all of the minigames have a multiplayer mode so you can also count the game as a decent party game
and the soundtracks on both games were quite good, both licensed and in-house music. they even have a rhythm minigame to prove it
yeah, may have gushed about this game too much, but i guess it was the realization that i actually really love these games. even played them both 100% a few years back and may do it again!
tl;dr - both games are really good, kinda underrated, and we need a sequel, preferably with less heteronormativity in matchmaking 😆
OMG Yes I loved thrillville growwing up, this game has not been on my mind in years so glad to see it again!
Never heard of these games, but they just came to PS+! I really enjoyed the demos, so it’s awesome to see them get some kind of a comeback!
This game looks amazing. Why am I hearing about it only now?!?
Off the Rails was the first game I bought for the PS2 as a kid. My brother and I spent hours playing the minigames - specifically Stunt Rider and Event Horizon! I had 3 save files that I completed 100%, I was obsessed!
Your jokes are super on point on this video. I hope you have a great holiday! My wife and I cracked up.
This was back when game devs actually cared about their games
Nowadays, it's all about money
Release a half functioning game, update it a few times, abandon ship
What a pleasant Christmas surprise!
Happy Holidays everyone!
Me and my little brothers would play the arcade game where it was like a 1v1 shooter inside of this game ! So much fun
I loved this game as a kid and I always enjoyed playing the entertaining game just to play the rhythm game. They really did amp up the music in off the rails and because of this game I went through a Miley Cyrus phase.
nice
some of the thrillville and off the rails minigames could be stand alone games of their own. i loved the ww2 fighter plane game Luftwaffe 109 & Luftwaffe 2 so much. seriously the devs knew how fun Luftwaffe 109 was that they hid the extra hard version in party play behind the 100% completion unlock.
this was incredible thank you so much for this gift buns i loved thrillville off the rails and having you do this vid was awesome as always your vids are hilarious and had incredible editing bless up and merry christmas/happy holidays to you and yours
Always nice hearing the smooth and funny deliveries of your content, Buns. Have a Merry Christmas, and a great new year!
OKAY BUT BOTH THE FIRST AND SECOND GAME WAS MY CHILDHOOD I’M SO GLAD SOMEONE ELSE FINALLY REMEMBERS THRILLVILLE
Also cancel Jake Martinez man’s into naked babies
I only ever had off the rails, and I did nothing but play the damn moto bike game non stop. Didn't even know there where multiple parks.
HOLY SHIT I HAD THAT ON THE PSP
so happy you made a video on this
For some reason, my dad has Joe Rogan on our tv on Christmas morning so this is helping me get thru it. Thanks Buns 🎄
Rogan is funny/interesting asf. Your dad knows what's what
Oh my god i remember spending an entire summer just playing luftwaffe 109 minigame and the shootzones with my dad
Well this is one hell of a Christmas gift, Thanks Buns 🙏. I was going to make a joke about you being Santa Claus but now that I think about it I don't think I've ever seen you and Santa Claus in the same room 🤔
Commenting to add that I actually vaguely remember that commercial you're talking about, even though it has apparently disappeared into the ether.
Had both games on the PS2, they were so fun and I loved the mini-games and running around listening to the radio.
