I really thought the effects of Covid on filmmaking would be more disease / isolation horror but it seems that the thing it really brought to the forefront was class divide and inequality. Especially on vacation, something a lot of us weren’t able to do during it and even since (except the very wealthy.) Love it! I’m eating it all up haha.
I didn’t even think about this, so true! Going to keep my eye out for more. Thanks 👍
I'm late to the conversation but I finally watched this and you are so spot on about the class divide and covid lockdown symbolism. For example - guests were not allowed to leave the compound but these ultra rich weirdos kept getting out and doing their mischief. Reminds me of certain politicians having big dinner parties at restaurants, going to Mexico for massive weddings, taking their boats out after "closing" the beaches/lakes etc while telling everyone else to stay inside. Ugh. Great movie though. Very unsettling.
I've been dying to see this! This was actually Brandon Cronenberg's third movie and Possessor was his second. His first movie was Antiviral. It's a mash up of sci-fi, body horror and medical horror. It's about a company that patents celebrity diseases and injects them into people who want to feel closer to their favorite celebrities. Has some crazy imagery in it. I loved Possessor more, but Antiviral was nearly as good to me. I don't think most people have even heard about because it came out in 2014 i think.
Yes I’ve seen it! But I don’t think it holds a candle to either of these!
@@spookyastronauts Never noticed before but you look like Peter Dinklage when talking to the camera
Thanks dude very nice of you. Hope you have a good day.
@@ragnarsrevenge3248 LOL wtf
It is so fun to have you say “Eww!” and then “I liked it a lot” 😂😂😂 Sounds like my kind of film 👏 As always, love your video❤
Haha thanks
I loved this movie, I went in pretty blind only reading a very short synopsis and knowing Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgard were in it and those two strong actors was enough for me to watch. A lot of the time I did feel like an observer but I felt like it could have been intentional especially during the scenes where James meets with the other guests when it's a wider shot and it almost feels like you're watch through the doorway.
this is by far the most compelling come chill with me video you’ve done, emma! a spoiler review/analysis would be great! btw, this film triggered some existential shit in me. the existential/moral horror was beyoooooond.
Haha thank you, just for some feedback can you let me know what you felt was compelling about this one?
Also sad story I recorded a spoiler chat for my patreon, but my battery cut out and I didn’t even realise… I was chatting to the camera with it dead 🥲🤡. Didn’t have time to redo it unfortunately, hopefully I’ll still have it fresh in my mind if I’m able to do one later
@@spookyastronauts i mean, you’ve always been compelling with your sit-down reviews, emma. the way you articulated your thoughts on this film was just so satisfying for me. probably because some of the reviews i’ve seen were a little bit lackluster for what this film really offers. it just shows your love for disturbing media, accompanied by your technical knowledge of film. you’re just simply the best 😅
also, no worries about that spoiler review. don’t wanna be greedy lol. you already ate!
I love you and your greyhound. So awesome. You and Possessedbyhorror are my fave, I listen to you all day at work. Thank you for being so awesome!
If I’m not mistaken David’s daughter / Brandon’s sister is also releasing a movie this year. Not sure if it’s horror - but I would love for them all to kick our asses 😅
Hell yeah!
I watched this movie twice in theaters to wrap my head around it! I absolutely loved it and so glad you still did a review on it! I’m a weird elevated horror movie fan so I was on board!
It’s so hard to find places showing good movies around here especially now that they closed the only indie movie theatres close to where I am.
I agree with this review. You pointed out what was lacking. It was the characters backstory. I wanted to be a bit more invested in the characters before things went to hell.
White lotus meets black mirror is a great description. I wish I was more into the movies that the Cronenbergs made. I agree with you in that it felt like some thoughts weren't fleshed out. Like it needed another draft of the script. I did get to see in it theaters, and honestly don't know if that made it better. A little old later sat 2 seats from me. We were the only ones there. When it was was over, she turned to me and said, "What was that about? That was the worst movie I've ever seen." I didn't agree with. But I thought that was funny. Toodles!
I loved Infinity Pool, Emma. I know people are gonna say "it's just another one of those eat the rich vacation things like White Lotus or Triangle of Sadness". I can see their point, but it's Cronenbergian, & Brandon Cronenberg's third feature is vastly superior to all those projects.
Nepo babies became all the talk recently in Hollywood, well Brandon has got to be considered one of the most exciting. He's making great provocative cinema right now. He's different than his da though. Infinity Pool is more concerned with idolatry and morality than body horror.
We're in the Mia Goth era right now. She's now the modern scream queen undoubtably. Her portrayal here in Infinity Pool is as good as her work in Pearl and X, no one expresses madness and ferocity like her at the moment. She's gonna be getting some A-list scripts pretty soon.
And then there's Alexander Skarsgård. He's always been an interesting screen presence, and he was the lead of my favourite film of last year. He's determined to go feral onscreen. His casting here is perfect. He's an incredible fine specimen of a man who lets his soul be defiled.
There's a possibility this is my favourite film of 2023... already.
It's so nice to find someone else as obsessed with this film as I am.
I loved it as well. I've heard people say they were disappointed at how "disturbing" it was, but I think they were looking for disturbing in the wrong place (violence). Psychologically, it's terrifying, especially if you're a male as it is really upsetting from the POV of male insecurity. I did feel that at the end, the plot just kept evolving too many times, and it made the pacing drag a bit, but other than that, I really loved it.
Thanks for the vid.
Love your doggo joining you on the couch, too.
What a film!
It's trippy, visceral, thought-provoking, and head-spinning in equal measure.
Also, it's segmented and unpredictable which makes it really rewatchable.
We finally saw this last night and while the twists and turns were interesting, I found myself getting a bit bored by the end of the movie. Mia was great as the antagonist and there were some great scenes between the dream/high sequences versus the madness going on but all the shock value felt almost farcical when the story itself was lacking. There were a lot of plot holes and questions left and possibly Cronenberg wanted it that way, but by the last 20 minutes, I was getting antsy and twiddling my thumbs for the ending to happen. Brandon Cronenberg is a great director and still growing. Possessor is still my favourite. I'd love to see you do a comparison of his work and his father's earlier pieces, like the Fly, Existenz, and Crash. All amazing works.
Loved it! Just saw the uncut version in the cinema. What an exciting and thought provoking movie!
This was in theaters for about two weeks in my area and I am still kicking myself for not going while I could. I am DYING to see this and this doesn’t help the desire, Emma! Haha
I watched the uncut version a couple of nights ago at a podcast screening (evolution of horror, its a great podcast) and I loved it so much.
Dan Martin the guy who did the special effects was at a Q&A afterwards and talked a lot about the prosthetics and stuff which will be on the podcast episode I’m sure.
I loved all the class stuff, especially the way it highlights how A LOT of crimes are essentially legal if you’re rich and can pay the fines.
I’m a writer though so James’ angst about his work really stood out to me. This movie felt *really* personal to Brandon Cronenberg, like he was exploring how he felt being a nepo baby. Like James only having his book published because of his father in law was totally BC working through some shit.
Oh and someone fainted in our viewing. Right after that first gory scene, which I thought was the worst and it even made my steel stomach queasy.
i have such a bad headache from watching it....but i NEED to watch it at least 2 more times!! ughhhh like I'm kinda traumatized too how they treated him
I am from Melbourne and just saw Infinity Pool in a cinema last week. I knew basically nothing going in and liked it quite a bit, thankfully got to see Pearl in cinemas a few months back as well. Mia Goth may be my favourite actress.
The concept is so cool! I bought it the first day it came out. And love seeing Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgard. What a role after playing a viking.
I really loved "Infinity Pool" and agree that Brandon has definitely surpassed his Dad as a brilliant filmmaker. I can't wait to see what he does next! This film was so unique, creative, multi-layered, harrowing, mesmerizing, thought provoking, and funny (in a twisted way). Mia Goth delivered an absolutely unhinged and unforgettable performance. I look forward to seeing this multiple times and uncovering things that I didn't catch in my first viewing. There is definitely a lot to digest in the movie and I feel it requires multiple views just to take it all in. I saw an interesting take from another reviewer who theorized that the Alexander Skarsgard character may actually represent Brandon Cronenberg's artistic struggle (son of a famous filmmaker) whose cinematic debut happened 6 years prior with "Antiviral" and was critiqued as having characters with no depth to them. In "Infinity Pool" Alexander Skarsgard's character was a failed writer whose book was written 6 years prior and published thanks to his Father-in-Law. An interesting theory, but with the absolutely brilliant "Possessor" and now "Infinity Pool," Brandon has proved himself as an artistic force to be reckoned with. I'm excited to see the next adventure he decides to take us on as I am confident it will be a wild and unique ride!
Just like his father, his films are interesting in concept, but poorly excecuted.....
I loved this film. We need a spoilers video & discussion STAT ;)
Saw this last Friday (Melbourne cinemas at least are showing the uncut version). Have really enjoyed all three of B. Cronenberg's features and this one is his smoothest as far as the weave of bizarre and realistic sides goes. Someone else pointed out that a surprising trend since the post pandemic hasn't been explicitly disease related but class based as this one is; lots of eat the rich movies coming out. +1 on Mia Goth (also with her own accent) in a ranging and scary performance. I saw James as being an intentionally directionless character who was being carried by his partner and her wealth, perfect for the gang to manipulate. Hot take: with all its bullying and impulsivity, Infinity Pool is the Ferris Buller's Day Off for the 2020s ;)
I’m so glad you liked this. I loved it too. Can’t wait to watch again
Yess, you got to see it! I had a feeling you'd like it. Great review! It was amazing to see in the theater. That haunting magnificent score. Such a fucked up ride through hell that constantly had my jaw drop over and over again and was disturbing, but sooooo entertaining, almost satirical. Mia Goth is demented and incredible here. "Jamessssss, James-y boy come out Jamessss" She's iconic. Aye, I loved it!
The meaning I got out of this movie was......when you don't value yourself, you end up killing yourself over, and over and over again. His wife said some degrading things about him. He even talked bad about himself. It fed into his self hate. So of course he smiled watching himself die! He had low self esteem. This film made total sense to me. He had no value in himself. He had 3 urns of his own life, and decided to stay at the island alone in the rain. Because he hates himself. Classic. Perfect example of creating your own hell.
My expectations were really high but I still liked it. Now I need to see that NC-17 cut.
So excited to hear your thoughts on this!! Love the spoiler free nature of your videos as we have not watched this one yet. I wonder if they will release the festival cut or if thats the one you saw. Here's hoping you get a physical disk release of Outwaters a some point!
Loved this movie so much! Mia Goth is the new Queen of Horror! So far my favorite film of the year!
I missed the chill “Dang It”
Now I have to see this!! Thank you, Emma!!!!
Happy Tuesday 💜👼🏻💋
yes! ive been so anxious to hear your thoughts on this!!
I dont know why I kept putting this movie off but I'm kicking myself in the ass for it. Loved the craziness and psychedelic scenes. Now I gotta watch Possessor.
Can’t wait to see this one. _Possessor_ has become one those go-to movies for me, that I watch again and again. This is an admission I would not make in any other forum! 😊
So happy I went to the theatre and watched this instead of doing a VOD viewing.
I live in Australia too (Melbourne) and I’m really hoping they decide to release it here, even if it’s just for MIFF 😵💫 I regret watching Pearl on VOD (even though I’ll still see it in theatres), so I don’t wanna make the same mistake with this!!
I enjoyed watching the movie, it was engaging trying to figure out where it was headed - the customs of the land, and what happens when an option is presented to the protag. I just think that it was a bit of a let down once that point happened, nothing particularly interesting (imo anyway) happened after that outside of 'rich assholes are assholes, who knew'. If this was harder sci-fi and another avenue / direction was taken once the main plot point hits then i'd have been all for it - though I guess we're getting close to just what was done in Possessor (which i loved). It was an engaging watch, but not a film I really care for in the end. Then again, i loved crimes of the future - so what do i know :P (edit oh, i should also say - some of the early camera movements were bloody brilliant, my stomach was shifting like a boat at sea at points lol.)
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m trying to hold out for an unrated Blu-ray of this but I don’t know if I can wait! Lol possessor is one of my recent favorites. thanks Emma!
Your house look so cozy!!! the perfect chill space 🙌
Thank you!
I waited months to watch this review, as I wanted to see this knowing as little as possible. Finally saw it tonight and gloriously uncut. Gabi kinda makes Pearl look stable by comparison. Gorgeous settings, great twists and satisfying hedonism, granted it does feel a bit overboard at times. The "dog" scene is a thing of beauty. Worth the wait.
I found the movie really intense and fear from that full on tension that grips you right from the start … that could be described as scary imo.
It’s not a traditionally ‘scary movie’ but omg it has you wincing almost the entire time.
Even the tension between the women at the Chinese restaurant was really unnerving for me.
Like you, I loved this movie, though, I would find it hard to recommend to most people.
I also loved that the Aussie accent was “allowed”. XD
Great take btw. I pretty much agree with everything you said and will be watching it again to get a better grip on some of the themes.
Loved it. Didn't know where it was going and it just went! Original and fun and weird
Hey, no fair. You got a lovely dog to protect you while you watch this.
Hahaa my dog can’t even protect itself
I am soooo excited to go see this in the cinemas in the next week or so. Loved your review and so happy you loved the film!
Your dog is cute lol 😆
sounds like my kinda of movie. Good cause I was waiting for it for so long. Thanks Emma!!!
So right...Man, that film was a hit-home disturber. No spoilers indeed, wouldn't want to. Thank you for the heads up on this... It might be a film that just stays with me for longer than I want.
i LOVED infinity pool! i know little about it going in and the reactions from the audience in the theater was priceless. i think i counted 8 people who walked out (especially during the leash scene... iykyk). so much fun!
Thanks for the review! I’m now very excited to watch this! Also, the haircut is cute!
Wow, this sounds amazing! It's coming to Swedish cinema in march. Thanks for the review, Emma!
yay I've been waiting to hear your thoughts! :) mia goth's character was one of the most bizarre characters I've seen from her yet
Love the Tusk mug!
Thank it’s my own merch
Another day, another slay.
💅🏼
I loved the tension! I saw it in the movie theater and really enjoyed the cinematography as well.
I liked it so much I knew you would too! Thanks for picking my comment :)
Loved it, not quite as much as Possessor but it was great! In my mind this is the new rebooted I Know What You Did Last Summer!
We are so lucky to have such awesome talent as B.Cronenberg, Lanthimos, Noé & Cosmatos making films.
Personally I’ll wait for the R-Rated cut for the rewatch (because it wasn’t fooked up enough!)
Dunno why but I'm always surprised by your movie and behind the scenes knowledge, you really know your stuff Emma. Can't wait to see Infinity Pool in a few days, long reign Scream Queen Mia Goth.
Hii
Your channel is one of the best and amazing to hear a female voice regarding the horror genre. You should definitely do some collaboration with the guy from Horrible Reviews!
I swear, your reviews are always so on point. I agree 100%.
Infinity Pool is such a dream-like trance until it rips you out of slumber every time shit hits the fan. I agree that there were many “forks in the road” this movie could have taken at any point, and at first I was slightly disappointed that it didn’t do what I was expecting.
That said, I think it’s a masterpiece. Brandon Cronenberg is my Jordan Peele. While I think Possessor is the stronger film, they have such compatible themes: rebirth through disassociation and malice… both sound pretty privileged don’t they? 10/10.
So happy you liked it as well! Thanks so much!
yes! I ASKED you to speak on this.
I went to Croatia and it was awesome, this film was very accurate.
I'm not surprised that you enjoyed this one Emma as these are the type of films that you really like. As for me, the film had too many twist and turns that didn't land anywhere and the characters, especially James, didn't have enough depth for me to care what happening to him.
my fav from him till now, defiantly keeping up the cronenberg brilliance and family tradition
I cannot WAIT!!! Alexander and Mia?!?! Yes please!!!!
I saw it in the cinema in Canada last week, and I'm glad I did too :) 4/5 loved it need to see it again
I absolutely loved it. It's my favorite film so far this year.
I haven't seen it yet 😊
@@mikesilva3868 did you see Possessor?
Me too so good!
I think mine too! Although I only saw the whale this year and that’s front runner for me
@@spookyastronauts I loved The Whale.... as far as films released this year, it's Infinity Pool.
I want to see it.
Gromit!!! Puppy time on the couch is the best.
He left 5 minutes in… such a quitter haha
The whole 'my double pays for my sins' scenario kinda reminded me of 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' if it went balls to the wall
I loved this film. Cronenberg definitely had amazing access to the influence of his father.
That's not to say his films are just like his father's, but they do carry a heritage of originality and of course body horror. I really look forward to what he does next.
I thought the concept was great and Mia Goth's performance was exceptional as always. I just didn't like how passive Alexander was. He agreed to everything.
I've just seen it and came here to see your opinion about it and Yes! It was Unbelievable, Beautiful, Shocking! Than Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgard...what an acting! I'm fascinated!
Amazing movie! Some people HAVE to watch this, especially those who party hard... that movie represents how a tourist is different then a regular
I rented the uncut version yesterday and I wasn’t as disturbed by anything I saw on screen like I expected to be, but just thinking about the possibilities of this being a reality somewhere for people of means… it’s just scary what money, technology and low self esteem get you 😅
I loved this movie. Brandon Cronenberg has gone from strength to strength across his releases.
I can't wait to see it!
Funny enough, this movie was filmed in my hometown in Croatia. The hotel chain where the majority of the movie takes place is precisely how the resort in the film turns out - exclusive. It's not really friendly to people from town, in the sense that everything is so expensive and part for part caters Triangle of Sadness types of tourists. It is most definitely NOT authentic to the people from town.
I absolutely adore Possessor, so I'm beyond hyped for Infinity Pool!!!
I watched the original version and I can't image what was changed for an uncut version. So many Bo bees , P holes and V holes in this movie lol.
A very interesting movie and I have so many questions like why go after James and not the both of them ? So many questions.
I think the main theme was about the privileges of wealth. A life without repercussions and the apathy that comes from that.
Great movie. Great review 👍
It is available on Netflix in Turkey u just have to switch your vpn to Turkey to watch the movie👌👌👌😁😁💞💞💞
I really liked this film. Trippy!
It is rare, in even the best horror/thrillers today, to find a true & unique "scare" . . . . Experienced fans have seen so much & can sense so much as it comes, unavoidably jaded I suppose . . . . BUT towards the end as James is resting in the home of the locals, hoping he's hidden from the "vacationers-crew" . . . . that kid's smiling face as he's creeping towards the bed, SO INTENSELY SCARY & INSANELY DEMENTED! I was smiling with stupid glee, like a dissected brain boiling in a frying pan of LSD! Give Brandon Cronenberg whatever the fuck he wants to continue creating his scripts. I believe around the press tour for Possessor he mentioned having a script that was his version of a "haunted space ship/space station" ie. Alien or Event Horizon etc. I'd love to see him do his take on that as it's very rare to see that setting in a unique and fresh way.
I'm very excited to see this - I really liked Possessor when it came out, and I'm keen for anything with Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgård tbh. I like the fact that even though I've watched this review, I still have no idea what to expect so that's always a cool thing!
So excited for Pearl!
I loved it.
I was lucky enough to watch this the movie theater. Mia Goth is amazing!! Shes always great ! I already have Pearl on DVD . This movie is a trip !! The movie theater sound was amazing. You have great taste in movies!! Im amazed Utah is getting these types of movies . Shout to my local Regal cinemas!! I Winnie the Pooh' horror movie . Keep scaring up reviews!!
Goth was incredible throughout, especially while doing a loud/leery English lass and I loved most of the movie. Would have preferred a little more world building because at times it’s was clear this was somehow out-of-time and our world. …but then it blimmin went on a bit and got a little bored to the end.
With all the movies coming out about society and moral dilemmas like this one, The Menu, Parasite, Triangle etc. You should do a video on your favorites of this style.
You have good taste it is a crime that you had to wait that long.
Oh Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmeeeeeessssssssssss! Where are you going James!?
